Charlie Wilson's War  (2007)

It is quite difficult to say what this film hopes to achieve. Is it to entertain? To inform? To criticise American policy, or endorse it? It is not hard to maintain, however, that whatever the aims were in the thoughts of director Mike Nichols, Charlie Wilson's War is a resounding failure. The film - like Nichols' previous feature, Closer - lacks any meaningful character development. Before the release of the film, Tom Hanks told his prospective audience not to see his character as a morally upright man. No, he said, Wilson is supposed to an ignorant womaniser and drug abuser: a man (as he is told by the President of Pakistan) with 'substantial character flaws'. One wonders how an audience can possibly hope to reach such a conclusion when they are handed the trademark Hanks 'awkward nice guy' taken straight from his roles in Forrest Gump or Castaway. When we are ever shown what is supposedly WIlson's dark side, his dalliances are merely there for light relief. Yet calling it ‘relief’ is too generous, however. Phillip Seymour Hoffman - proven to be an outstanding actor in recent years - is grossly misused, playing the role of the amusingly angry short guy. There is no purpose for him other than as a (poor) comedic foil to the whimpering Hanks, and one feels that with a character who is as explosively introduced as Gust Avrokotos, Hoffman could have gone to town had the script allowed for it. Instead, we are shown a stale 'romance' between Hanks and Roberts that is about as exciting as a night in watching Countdown, despite Roberts’ competence in a demanding role that requires her to smile occasionally and even deliver the odd line or two. The whole feel of the film is wrong. Nichols clearly attempts to make some sort of commentary on the failure of American foreign policy to aid the post-war reconstruction of foreign films, yet seems petrified to do so. Instead we have a feature that entirely tows the middle ground: it appeals to conservatives who get to see the Commies get their comeuppance, while liberals can snicker at the meekly implied arrogance of the American involvement. One feels that if the film wants to make a point about something, it should go ahead and make it, rather than leaving us to infer the entire meaning of the film from Hanks’ blank expression in the closing sequence and a quote from Wilson himself (which, funnily enough, says more in 3 lines than the enitre screenplay does in 97 minutes). No heart, a meagre script, poor performances from the leads, and a lack of engagement with any of the real issues at hand. An embarrassment: thank God for Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

This movie was absolutely dire, I was expecting better things from the star studded cast but this was so boring I switched it off after 30 minutes. A good movie to watch if you are having trouble sleeping at night!

Having been disappointed this week with I am Legend, I was hoping that Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts could deliver what Will Smith could not. I was not disappointed. This is an interesting and entertaining film, all the moreso because it is based on a true story. Tom Hanks is superb as a Texan Congressman who tries to help Afghanistan expel the Russians from their country. It is not a war film and if you are looking for full blown action this is not for you. The film focusses more on the man (Charlie Wilson) and on American policies and the 1980s culture. A friend who watched the film with me felt it was a little Americanised and didn't reflect events that have since happened in Afghanistan, but I don't feel this took anything away from a good film.

What is it they say?Ah yes:Behind every good congressman in the US there's a glamourously rich Christian woman? I think this sums it up for me. This film does NOT disappoint! The acting from Seymour Hoffman, Hanks and Roberts is as expected: excellent. The film really hit the mark for me because of the humour that was carefully injected into this A Class script. It wasn't so much a film about war and politics but more about what one man will do when he sets his mind to it (of course will the help of others! And goaded by a very rich influential woman in Washington). An interesting and rivetting film to watch, although the contents are perhaps questionable in certain places throughout the film. However if what you're after is a film with solidly well acted characters that keep you glued to the screen then Charlie Wilson's War is a sure bet!

written by aaron sorkin (The West Wing) the film has moments of comedy genius. i am disappointed with some of the negativity this film has received. many have been quick to jump on the bandwagon of tom hanks hating: either for the his 'inability' to play the role or for a poorly constructed character by the writers. i think that personally, this is nothing short of nonsense. indeed, Mr hanks, adds a certain level of charm to a character that is a politician first, a womaniser second, and an alcoholic third. i can see why so many people have misunderstood this film, a lot of you are simply reading to much into it. its not a critique of American Foreign policy, (though i think we can agree that the ending certainly leaves no doubt about F**king up at the last hurdle), nor is it a resounding comedy with laughs every few minutes. it crosses the genres, combining documentary, biography, fact, fiction and comedy. this is why so many have labelled this as a 'film that tries to do too much'. if you can simply sit back and enjoy a film without feeling the urge to over analyse or critique the film for its stage direction then this movie is well worth the watch. it is entertaining, is a good story and above all else it has both comedy and portrays some of the hardship afghani's had to endure well. p.s. @ the reviewers which call this film unpatriotic, i almost feel compelled to laugh.

A man who would not let ambition colour his conscience Charlie Wilson was an extraordinary U.S. Congressman, urged on by an extraordinary rich female sponsor. He cuts through the political do's and don'ts in Afghanistan during the Russian invasion, all the Afghanis required was the means to protect themselves and fight back, the US standing back from supplying arms for fear of accelerating the cold war into an altogether more insidious real war, but Wilson could not let the Afghanis suffer this unwarranted inequal fight, and by whatever means available to him, he saught to provide whatever the y needed to protect themselves. When a film entertains as well as informs like this does it just make the whole thing worthwhile for the viewer, and this pulls it off in spades. We seem to expect fine performances of Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, and this is no exception but in addition you get the very best performance I've seen yet from Philip Seymore Hoffmann. A definate reccomended watch.

Began to watch this but could only cope with about 5 minutes of it. The hype and the cast list had led us to believe that it would be good. However, we couldn't make head or tail of the dialogue and what we could get seemed to be unnecessarily coarse. Decided we had better things to do with our time!

I did not know an awful lot about this film, however based on reviews by TV movie buffs (!), I thought we'd give it a go. I wish we hadn't! My partner fell asleep at around 37 minutes in to the film and then I must have nodded off at about 58 minutes gone. When i awoke, there was about 10 minutes left to go, but I just could not be bothered to rewind the last 20 minutes. Do I need to say anything about the story? I don't think so. Watch if you're having trouble sleeping maybe?!

I watch everything with Tom Hanks in and was very disappointed with this slow and boring film. It was so bad I can't even remember what happened.

Sorry to say that i could not even tell you what happened in this film, it was a load of talking in the first 20 mins, then my mate walked out and went home. I fell asleep it was soooooo boring bout 10 mins later and my boyfriend drunk loads of stella throughout watching the film to kill time so he couldnt even tell me what happened in the film, all he said was it was rubbish (well thts putting it nicely) Honestly,, i wouldnt recommend getting this film to anyone!! (sorry to all you ppl who actually enjoyed the film)

If you are looking for a film with no action or drama, but an interesting history angle and a good dialogue then this is for you. There was not enough going on to keep me entertained. On the plus side HOFFMANN gave an absolutely first class, amusing performance. 2 stars is for the excellent acting, unfortunately the whole storyline was dull.

This is a really bad film. It amazes me how Hollywood gets money to make things like this. Dreadful plot, no story, and some really bad acting, especially from Roberts. Hanks is really bad too- he has been coming out with some howlers recently and this is as bad as The Terminal. PLEASE don't bother with this one- it's just had alot of hype which is what made me watch it.

With such a fantastic cast this film should at least be given a chance, and they don't disappoint. Hanks is of course fantastic, even though he'll never quite shake off the good-guy image from his most famous roles. So seeing him naked in a pool with strippers doing lines is slightly unconvincing... but his character really is a loveable rogue and Hanks plays it well. Roberts does the strong woman role flawlessly but still retains a warmth that the character needs. It's a shame Hoffman wasn't given more scenes since he pretty much steals the show, and adds much needed light relief. I'm not always a fan of Hollywood's take on politics, but the fact that this is based on real events and used the real Charlie Wilson's anecdotes in the scriptwriting process should suggest it's not completely unrealistic. It isn't a story of how America saves the day, but really just how one man can make such a difference, so the title is really fitting. And the end few scenes are quite poignant in light of more recent political events, revealing the flaws of American policy that could otherwise have been hidden with a 'happy ever after' ending. So it's a bit slow at times, but Charlie Wilson's War is definitely entertaining, and well worth a watch. DVD extras are also interesting, especially a documentary on the real Charlie Wilson, who has just as much humour and charisma as you'd hope.

george clooney said that he wanted hanks to die when he found out that cpt tom had the rights to charlie wilsons war as it was an project he wanted to undertake himself .i couldnt help thinking when watching how much better suited to the role clooney would have been, hanks playing the role of a player sexual and political wont wash with me but phillip seymour hoffman was a joy as always so i dont know what my problem is i realy enjoyed the film just coulnt stop thinking about hanks and that he just didnt fit.

We thought it was extremely well acted and the actors were appropriately selected for their roles. My goodness, Tom Hanks can act! But they were all great within their own roles - a stellar cast. A surprisingly interesting story, all the more interesting because it is all based on truth. We loved the sharp, witty dialogue and the repartee pinging off each other. Fantastic film to watch as a one-off, but wouldn't buy it and watch again, its not that kind of film.

I was not quite sure how to take this film. Was it a comedy? Was it a tragedy? Was it a documentary or worse a mockumentary? Nevertheless it had a very talented cast who acted their socks off; all they needed was the band of the Grenadier Guards playing as the ship sank. Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts may have grabbed the two lead characters but it was really Philip Seymour Hoffman's film. He was quite rightly nominated for an Oscar for his performance as Gust Avrakotos the CIA consultant with attitude. The story was all about how a few influential politicos and dedicated CIA crew helped the Mujahideen or 'Strugglers' to kick the USSR out of Afghanistan. Yes, whilst the boys of the 9th Company were dodging the bullets and RPGs it was Tom and his chums on the hill voting the money to keep President Zia and his chums supplied with AK47s etc. I think that the quotation from Charlie Wilson himself at the end of the film said it all. You need to watch this film to decide what it means to you and do not just condemn it out of hand as another example of America getting it wrong. Well worth the money, I may rent it again in a year or two!

I really could not get into this film. It started with an annoying long advert which could not be skipped (did I miss my video casette player!). There is just no excuse when you purchase or rent a product at full price for it to have adverts. For this reason alone I cannot recommend this film. If the makers of the film want to highlight a particular cause, then donate their many millions of dollars to that cause, but do not force me to watch their propoganda. The film was about 90 minutes, and in my opinion it just never got started. I kept hoping that in the next scene things would get better, but they didn't. If you are expecting lots of fighting and guns and bombs in Afghanistan, then this film is not for you. In fact if you are expecting anything other than good acting, then I cannot recommend this film. Rent this film and see how bad it really is. Can I be honest and say that on many occasions I watched sections at 2x speed (with subtitles). I found it dull and boring, and I usually love Tom Hanks films.

This an excellent move. Loads of dry humour.
Fantastic insight into accountablity of congressmen - not.
It is a compelling movie, not loads of action, no car chases.
Loads of pollitical incorrectness (eg calling your staff 'jail bait' cos they cos you like them that way!)
It show what happens when someone gives a damn about the Afghan people and how the russian where just kulling them for sport - this is the transition from Gravy Train pollitian to one with a passion. How it all changes when a politian gets his hands dirty with the truth.
How the West just sat of the fence and what you had to do to save lives. Killing Commies was cool in congress, it was cold war sport. But was with all american sagas not very good at cleaning up the mess they left behind. Congress would fund a war but not reconstruction. It is sad how easy it is to get into any war - but actucally charity or reconstruction is dull with no votes in it.
It is sad that the movie shows the decision that the usa made that created the taliban, how it could have been so different. If only one could learn from history.

As for the production, excellent 5.1 (soundstage and music) upscales to 1080p well even in the fast action scenes. Time will fly by watching this movie.

This man would not be in congress today - fantastic about his decadant life style.
Not a movie to watch if you are giving up booze.
If you are a fan of movies such as 'Spooks' this is just up your street.

Although the performances from a strong cast are solid and the story may be based on true events, I found this movie disappointing as it's message is one we are all well aware of - America is great at destroying countries, but useless on rebuilding.

Too much American politics but the covert operations shown in the story plot give some insight to the world situation and the terror we all experience today. With the star line up, including Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Om Puri, Ned Beatty and Amy Adams, they only manage an ok film, with no particular scenes standing out.

In 1981, American interests in the Middle East, being threatened by Russia's military invasion of Afghanistan, results in a pile of money being utilized to provide the Afghan Stone Age warriors with the weaponry to defeat Russia's superior military might. Shows how dull it is, they took only 95 minutes to cover about 10 years. For a fraction of what it must have cost to pay the stars they could have employed the History Channel to make a far more interesting tv documentary. Awful dialogue and a pointless effort. They must have been hard up for something to put on screen when they decided to film this boring lot. I don't even know why I awarded it one star. Terrible!!! Another Hanks turkey.

On the whole I do like films that are based on fact - and although I did not actually dislike this film it won't go down as one of my favourites. I like Tom Hanks and Julie Roberts but I don't think this is one of their best pictures either. The best you can say about it is it shows the manipulating that goes on in American politics..

No matter what Tom does I'm happy. There is always a moral theme to his films. His choice of script I'm sure.

Very entertaining film. Gives an interesting and topical insight into how Afghanistan's Mujahideen received funding from US covert operations. IF this doesn't sound like entertainment, then rest assured, Tom Hanks, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Julia Roberts make it a great story.

Upon meeting Charlie Wilson, I very quickly formed the impression that I wasn't going to like him. When he first appears, he's in a hot tub, with 3 naked strippers, while around him, people are snorting coke. The initial impression is one that changed throughout the movie, with the character developing more and the 'likable rogue' figure coming out more. Without a doubt the man achieved something almost beyond belief, and the movie shows this clearly. The performances are solid, Hanks is his usual self, and Philip Seymour Hoffman is great as he plays off Hanks. Julia Roberts puts in a good performance too as the Texan who started the whole affair off. A very enjoyable movie, and thought provoking when you consider the legacy of what Wilson did in Afghanistan... Recommended viewing

This movie is both entertaining, funny, disturbing and thought provoking. It shows how foreign policy works when run by a bunch of 'good 'ole boys' in Washington. Watch it, learn about it, stop it. As responsible voters, we all need to end this kind of war mongering for the good of our planet and society.

This doesn't quite live up to what I ad hoped but it is still excellent and Tom Hanks is very good - more interestingly is that it gives an insight into what politicians were like back in the day - bad, funny, underhand, rule-breaking, brilliant. The only sour thing it will leave you with is that Charlie Wilson created the platform in Afghanistan that then led to the Taleban regime and the consequent war that Prince Harry's helping out with. I think maybe Charlie Wilsons War 2: Rise of the Taleban may cover this.

The good bits first: Impressive cast, well shot and now I'm struggling t o see why it got touted as a potential Oscar movie. Based on true events, it's a bit like Titanic; you know the ship sinks in the end. Uncompromising in its delivery of a political message, I think this is just a clumsy movie. Might be worth a rental when it comes out, if you can't think of anything better.

Having read a great review of the movie, I put it down as a priority choice - I wish I hadn't wasted my time. It wasn't a bad film, and Tom Hanks wasn't as annoying as he has been in other films - but I seem to have missed the point of it. It was short (98 mins) and seemed to finish before it had actually accomplished anything. Only watch it if you don't have anything else to do.

Entertaining film, if you ignore the possibilty that the 'Truth' will be otherwise

A GREAT CAST & BEAUTIFULLY ACTED BUT A BIT SLOW IN PLACES.

Don't know what the rest of the film was like but the first 30mins were so dull it forced me to turn it off. I rented this film because Tom Hanks has never done a bad film. Unfortunately, in my opinion, he has now.

Really enjoyed this - not a big Tom Hanks fan (or Julia Roberts fan come to that!), but they both excelled in this understated film. I would recommend it.

the Observer reviewer who for some bizarre reason said that this movie was ' brilliantly funny ' was obviously smoking something herbal while he was watching it. Very disappointing is all I can say and this movie just reminds me of how much I dislike watching Julia Roberts.

This film should have been a winner, but it never got off the ground. Tom Hanks did not convince as the philandering superficial senator, Julie Roberts performance had to be wooden and boring as the part demanded and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, by number one actor of all time was unable to make any more of this part than he could. This Aaron Sorkin production (West Wing) should have been brilliant, so disappointed, only stayed the course out of loyalty to Phillip Seymour Offman.

Tom Hanks playing a typical 'Tom Hanks' but he does it very well. CWW is a nice movie about a man who wants to do some good despite the potential repecusions.

For those who don't know much about the Afghan war(s) this is a good film to watch!!

Good film although nothing to rave about, funny in parts

I went into this film without any expectations and am very delighted to say that its the best thing i've seen this year, but it definitely requires you to like things such as West Wing i.e. speech based comedy as apposed to physical comedy. Aaron Sorkin's script in my opinion is fantastic and really demands a certain of concentration. I watched it a second time and it got better.

It seems that everything the mighty PSH turns his hand to is great on the eye. What a character 'Gus' is here. Stealing the show whenever he is in shot. Sorry Tom, take a seat this man is the real deal. Some lovely dialogue leads to a great role for the Hoff! Unfortnately though it is not enough to save the film. Even if there is some very sad elements of it involving Afghanistan and Israel and how we got where we are now.

Yawn................... What a boring film, I stuck with it hoping it was going to get better but alas it didnt .

This must rank as one of the most tedious films Ive seen in years. If the film is going to rely on talk to propel the plot,it would have been a good idea to make the talk interesting and stimulating,which it certainly was not. Perhaps it improved in the last half hour,but I didnt stay with it to find out.

I tried to stay awake for it but couldn't it put it on twice on two different days but couldn't get in to and just fell asleep. It wasn't very gripping and I usually adore Tom Hanks not one of his best films.

This is one of those stories that you couldn't make up if it wasn't true because no -one would believe it. Based around the true story of a sleazy Texan congressman (Hanks) who became interested in the Russian invasiuon of Afghanistan and how he managed to raise the funds that helped them fight back. It's a fascinating insight into the corruption of politics throughout the world and a damning one too. Philip Seymour Hoffman is excellent as the maverick CIA agent assigned to help - in fact both he and Hanks pitch it perfectly between humour and the seriousness of the issues. You do have to follow what's being said to understand the machinations of the plot, but don't let that put you off. Not sure what to make of Julia Roberts. Her character was central to the story, but I can't help but feel that anyone could have played the part just as well

SYMOR PHILLIP HOFFMAN STOLE THE SHOW.

Good film, fantastic script and well acted. It's not an action blockbuster so I'm guessing those who fell asleep were expecting one. Instead it's a humourous whilst sad and thought provoking (true) story on how one man tried to make a positive difference in the world and, no, he wasn't a saint. Unfortunately, these things tend to get overlooked in this day and age with people more interested in what people do in their personal lives rather than what they try to do to help.

Hanks and Hoffman deliver fantastic performances! Good film to see.

quite a cheesy light hearted first 20 mins gives way to a great and amusing insight into poltics, the man, the conflict and the time. not a heavyweight film but well worth it for teh giggles and the understanding

This is a good film, Ive only put 3 stars because a lot of the dialogue was difficult to understand, spoken quickly & mumbled so the story was somtimes hard to follow, but watch it anyway cos tom, julia & philip (worst mumbler) are worth it.

Never heard of Charlie Wilson until I saw this film and his involvement with Afghanistan. Real bit of history really and Tom Hanks is good as Charlie Wilson, and the extras were great as you could get to see the real Charlie.

You really do have to concentrate when watching this film as it covers a heavy topic. I found it interesting and am glad I watched it but in my opinion it is not one on Tom Hank's best movies to-date.

Biopic, with a licence to be entertaining (and therefore not too accurate) and stretch credulity. Love Hanks and you will enjoy. Supporting cast acceptable, but as always overshadowed by Hanks. Nothing to write home about, but mildly entertaining.

Only good for insommiacs. The most boring film we have ever had the misfortune to see. Drop off to sleep factor 95% We would give it zero stars if it were possible. We usually love to watch Julia Roberts but you can go off people and shame on you Hanks

This was my first rental from LoveFilm.com and I think I made a surprisingly good choice. I initially chose the film due to the leading casts, Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, being actors whose other fims I had previously enjoyed. 'Charlie Wilson's War' proved to be very informative, being based on fact and not a subject of which I was very familiar. The writer added personal interest to what could have been a boring documentary type film. Tom Hanks was superb in the leading role taking on the persona of Charlie Wilson with feeling. Julia Roberts provided a strong glamorous foil for Tom Hanks departing from the more usual 'frilly' roles for which she is famous. All in all a most enjoyable film suitable for most members of the family (youngsters would probably find the film boring).

Despite the big Hollywood names in this film I found it to be boring! It had no point to it. Don't watch it, you're wasting your time.

I thought this was a great wee movie. The story was interesting and not that well known. The acting was very good; the wit was quick and sharp. Not a dramatic film but they don't all have to be do they.

Hanks just gets better with age. Starring as the titular Charlie Wilson, Hanks is a US elected official who decides to stick his nose into the Afgan war against Russia in the 1980s. When I say he decides, actually Julia Roberts (in her best role for years) decides and this is what adds so much to the film. Rather than being a gung-ho, two fingers to the Ruskkies sort of film, Hanks is as much a victim in that circumstances seem to conspire to keep him running to stay one step ahead of his own troubles. Not that he seems particularly put out by this. With an office of eager young female staff ('you can teach me to type but you can't teach me to grow tits') who are far from just being eye candy and a grizzled, chain smoking, drinking buddy of a CIA Agent (excellently potrayed by Philip Seymour Hoffman), this is a non-pc, laugh out loud, great 1.5 hours of entertainment. The fact that this is based on a true story makes it so much more remarkable and if the financial figures are to be believed, every bean-counters worst nightmare!

Dear oh dear oh dear! So, Hollywood decides that hey, maybe America kind of, like, might have, y'know, had a hand in the worlds' ills with it's policies in Middle-East & Afghanistan???? Really??? y'don't say!!!! I was hugely disappointed with this movie. Though with Hanks & Roberts at it's lead perhaps i expected faaaaaar too much. Roberts reprises her 'Pretty Woman' persona (yet again) as Hanks' facial expressions barely change from 'stunned Forrest'. The problem is that, as ever, Hollywood glosses over reality & panders to the 'Hey, we knew all along' brigade & serves up a woolly, superficial, 'aren't Americans great!' piece of banality that SHOULD have been vital viewing. Only the very last scene in the movie - seemingly completely detached from the rest of the film, manages to raise it's point - though takes under 30seconds and is washed over in a sort of 'Yeah, um, ok..' kind of way. I should have guessed i suppose. Philip Seymour Hoffman is nothing short of superb, so my 2 stars go to him, but if you're looking for a balanced disection of U.S foreign policies as served up by a coke-snorting, womanising bore created by the Wall Street generation? .... expect nothing more than the usual Hollywood baloney: 'Charlie did it! Yeeeaaaaahhhhh!!!!' ......... *sigh* Good grief. :-(

I could really have done without seeing this film. It really didn't engage me at all, except for the few (quite dryly amusing) scenes in which the supporting actor co-stars (sorry - can't recall his name). I normally love Tom Hanks, and have enjoyed many of Julia Roberts' movies, but in this neither character is interesting. A slightly abrupt ending too, though it made it's point well. Maybe that's the point of this flm - not to entertain, just to make a point? Having said this my husband quite liked it and would have rated it more highly.

For a true story about political machinations, very entertaining. Roberts exceeds herself, Hoffman has great comical charisma, and the West Wing-style script works a treat.

This movie made me do something i *never* do.. i was so bored out of my mind i actually turned it off.

A distinctly average political satire. Hanks plays against type as the eponymous 'anti-hero' : an 80s Congressman-come-playboy who seizes on a political opportunity to arm the Mujahadin in their war against the Communist Russian invaders. Sadly, his character failed to convince - I didn't believe in a change in character from start to finish - leaving you feeling distinctly underwhelmed by what has gone on before. The opening/closing sequences are cringe-makingly awful too! Julie Roberts is woefully underused as a socialite Texan - the 'sixth wealthiest Texan' - and does little other than occasionally smile throughout the film's duration. In fact, in the acting stakes, the film's one saving grace is a barnstorming performance by Phillip Seymour Hoffman as an angry CIA operative. As a political satire it's moderately successful. Occasionally the dialogue is sharp and offers some wit, and it's hard to disagree with Nichols' critique of US foreign aid policy (despite the overtly liberal and 'right on' way in which it's handled). I just felt that the satire should have had more bite to be truly effective. I wouldn't rush out to see this but there are some crumbs of wit and perception amid the dross.

Despite a literate script by Aaron Sorkin, this movie tries your patience. The characters are supposed to be lovable rogues. Rather they are very dull rogues. And only in its last five minutes does it acknowledge that the events it depicts are less than heroic. It's an apologia for US foreign interventionism and concludes that only in the endgame were the participants found wanting.

I rented this film because I’ve enjoyed everything that I’ve seen written by Aaron Sorkin for the screen, both big and small. Studio 60, West Wing, The American President and A Few Good Men all had intelligent scripts that made for watchable and compelling viewing, even if the nuances of the subject matter occasionally went over my head. It was surprising, therefore, to find Charlie Wilson’s War a mish mash of a film that bored and disappointed me. The subject of a playboy congressman who uses his seat in power to spend billions of dollars on a covert war against the Soviets in Afghanistan sounds fascinating. However, when the end result tried to come across as a comedy drama, it succeeded in neither. Even the trailer for the movie brought out a wit in the script that never became fulfilled in the film. The scene where CIA man, Gust, is explaining the current Afghan plan to Charlie is suddenly interrupted by the congressman’s female admin staff skipping into the room, dressed in short skirts and low-cut tops. It came across as pure Benny Hill. Another scene, which should have been tense and exciting, had the newly armed Afghans shooting down Soviet helicopters for the first time. Instead, it combined pointless shots of the Russian chopper pilot talking about his wife, some obvious old news footage that didn’t sit well cut against modern visual effects, and a couple of Afghans running out of the bushes with a rocket launcher then jumping for joy and hugging each other when the chopper was hit. In all, it could have been straight out of a Monty Python film, but without the humour. I found that I simply carried on watching the film in the hope that it would get better, but in the end I was glad when it finished. That’s not to say that it’s all bad - the main performances are good, and there’s an interesting scene towards the end where Charlie comments on US foreign policy that few would outside the Bush administration would disagree with. However, I’d put it no higher than a medium priority disc if you’re adding it to your list.

Charlie Wilson (Tom Hanks) was the prototypical Texas Congressman: more interested in enjoying the perks of his office and keeping his constituents pacified than actually doing anything constructive. (When asked why Congress argues endlessly without ever taking a stand he says: 'Tradition, mostly.') But somehow he wound up on the subcommittee in charge of funding CIA covert ops. When he sees Dan Rather reporting on the Afghan mujahadin trying to shoot down Soviet helicopters with 'Davy Crockett rifles', he decides to help. More to prove his clout on Capitol Hill than anything else, he gets funding for the CIA's support of the 'freedom fighters' doubled --- from $5 to $10 million. It's a meaningless gesture, but it leads to some unexpected consequences: an agonizing visit to an Afghan refugee camp and an uneasy alliance with a disgruntled CIA operative (Phillip Seymour Hoffman, who deserves a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance). Throw in a former Miss Cotton Bowl (Julia Roberts) and an Israeli arms dealer and together they defeat the mighty Russian Army. It's the ultimate feel-good ending.

More 'interesting' than compelling viewing. An insight into the machinations of the US against Russia in Afghanistan and a simplified window into political deal-making in the US Congress. You do feel that the characteristics of the central figure have been totally overblown in some cases and totally ignored in others. Easy watch, though.

I feel that I have to comment here on the poor reviews that have been already written. This isn't a work of fiction - it is based on the true account of Charles Wilson, US congressman and driving force behind arming the Afghans during their war with the USSR. It seems that the negative reviewers believed that they were watching a fictional drama. The issue of Charlie and his female staffers is covered in George Crile's book on the man - take a look at it.

Great actors great story .... some outstanding dialogue .... but just doesnt seem to satisfy!

I love tom hanks films and this included, wonderfully done. I normally enjoy watching films with lots of movements than dialogue, this is an exception, this has got lots of dialogue but still interesting.

Charlie Wilson's War is a perfectly fine film and a nice way to spend an evening. It has some great moments, with Phillip Seymour Hoffmann in fine form.

Tom Hanks is excellent as the senator who subsidises the Afghan Russia war. I liked the ironic theme running through the film against the current US invasion of Afghanistan. Interesting as it is topical and a true story. Really enjoyable film.

This isnt your usual Tom Hanks film in the sense it doesnt go on for 3+ hours yet it is a better movie for that fact. There is no messing about because it just gets straight into the action with no side plots to get in the way. Its a very interesting piece of modern history made into a very good film, definatly worth watching...and the acting and script is fantastic.

I tried to watch this highly recommended load of old drivel twice and twice came to the same conclusion: If they could stop talking a load of old nonsense at each other and get a plot it might be entertaining to watch! On my first watch I lasted about half and hour and fell asleep. At the second watch I lasted a further ten minutes before I decided not to waste any more of my life. Worst film I have seen for quite some time. Boring, boring, BORING!!!!!!!!!!! And I hate Tom Hanks! This just utterly confirmed it.

Tom Hanks and Seymour-Hoffmann are very well pitted against each other in this film but Seymour-hoffmann manages to upstage Hanks inspite of having a supporting role. Well worth renting.

This is an interesting take on US involvement in Afghanistan in the 1980s. It shows why the west has subsequently got itself in such a mess. The film lacks tension and so it gives the apearance of being a documentary.

outstanding. not sure about the emphasis on how brilliant america is, but at least it had the sense to put in a quote of Wilson's at the end stating that they started with the right intentions, but never finished, so ended up making things worse. good stuff though. I also watched the kite runner recently, so it has an interesting different point of view. highly recommended.

At the beginning of the film we have Charlie sharing a hot tub with a group of naked prostitutes. As the scene shifts to Washington we have Charlie at the seat of power having rapid 'conversations' with people whose mid-american accents were so strong they needed subtitles. As he spoke, the words f*** and f***ing were fired out like bullets from a gatling gun. Charlie as he really was? Maybe. Necessary to the plot? No. Entertainment? I don't think so, not for me. However good the rest of the film might have been, I was not willing to subject myself to more of this, and switched off. I was disappointed because I had wanted to like this film.

A proper representation if a bit far fetched as to how American politics work. Money is the key.

Somewhat engaging but the performances weren't good enough for it to be great. The moral at the end was not emphasized enough, that the consequences of our actions as important as our actions themselves.

Found this very boring, turned it off after half hour

This film is very good fun too watch about a serious subject now and back in the 80's. I like political films and this delivers with the story and the funny lines and it always makes it feel more real knowing that its based on a true story. I know these films can be more glamourous than it actually might have been but i feel this doesnt go too far. Great acting and good all round film and definatly worth the watch and i will be buying this one!

It makes a refreshing change for the 'hero' of a film not to be 100% perfect, and of great moral values. The acting was - needless to say - absolutely top drawer. The story is interesting, and certainly provides some background information about the current situation in Afghanistan...or is that Pakistan?! ;-) Makes me want find out a bit more about the Soviet occupation, too.

I'm not usually interested in 'based on real events' movies, I'm looking for escapism in films not reality, but I thought I'd give this one a go anyway. Tom Hanks, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Julia Roberts, all well worth watching. . . usually. Hoffman's character was the only engaging character I thought, Hanks seemed to just want to get through the whole thing as quick as possible with as little talent used as he could get away with and Roberts was on auto pilot. The story was quite intriguing and makes you think about the current state of affairs with terrorism. Interesting at best I would say, I watched the whole thing because I felt I needed to more than I was compelled to. So why three stars as a rating? I guess it's one of those films that's more interesting after it's finished than when it's being watched. If you don't watch this one you're not really missing much, in my opinion.

this movie handles a serious subject matter in a light-hearted manner yet still manages to get home the point without zealous preaching. It is a balancing act which was well executed as it appeals to a wider audience than most films in its genre. Tom hanks is good as usual and the dialogue between him and Seymour Hoffmans character is dry, witty and sarcastic.

What a likeable guy a small fish in a big pond but achieved something good and a story worth telling. I like this film however I like anything Tom Hanks is in.

Breathtakingly executed, Charlie Wilson's War marks a return to form for Aaron Sorkin, a writer with that rare ability to tell a story and place it correctly in its historical setting. Tom Hanks is absolutely perfect as the character of the title, a high-living Congressman just this side of sleazy who becomes galvanised by the suffering of the Afghan people during the Soviet occupation. Using all the tricks at his disposal, he manages to get Washington to turn a trickle of assitance into an ocean, which in turn enables the mujahideen to bog their foe down in a war that eventually bankrupted the superpower and led to the end of the Cold War. Julia Roberts is Hanks' acting equal, as the Neocon fundraiser, while Philip Seymour Hoffman acts them both off the screen as the old school, out-of-favour spook that gets all the guns to the Afghans. There is beautiful chemistry between all of them. But what gives this film its deserved five stars is that Sorkin understands where this leads. It concludes with a beautiful, beautiful scene in which Wilson warns of the consequences of not winning the peace, to the sound of a jet passing ominously close overhead. We all know that the current schism between the Western and Islamic worlds had its genesis in Afghanistan, where two sides both thought (with some justification) that they had beaten the Soviets. Where it all led has been a tragedy for the whole world, and this film manages to convey that wonderfully.

Brilliant. Aaron Sorkin at his best, as genius as he is in the West Wing he is here. There are Sorkin esq traits, lots of conversations whilst walking down corridors for example. Brilliantly acted, Tom Hanks and Philip Seymour Hoffman as flawless as ever. Really fantastic film telling the remarkable achievements of three people and one man in particular. I can't recommend it enough.

Much better than I had hoped for from a Hollywood take on US politics. It's very well thought out and the story works even without the history lesson. A good night in!

Another film, I would give 3.5 to if I could. The acting is great (Phillip Hoffman excellent and Tom Hanks watchable), the dialogue is sharp and the direction assured. Not worth a 4 as there is a lack of punch in the ending in terms of the operation of American foreign policy. That is a minor grumble really as I don't really expect that kind of critical punch from a Hollywood movie. Very educational as to how American policy operated in Afghanistan and what a grubby world we live in. The conclusions was vaguely worrying but all in all, Charlie Wilson's war is a good entertaining film that is worth seeing.

Who is Charlie Wilson? was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the title of this DVD. Then I saw that Tom Hanks was the lead and thought well it must be worth a look as I think Tom Hanks is amongst the best actors of his generation playing so many different rolls so well. This film is brilliant on all levels. Great acting and a real piece of modern history explained in a most entertaining way. It certainly explains why we are now fighting (another) war in Afganistan.

Really not sure what to make of this film. It is hard to decide what the purpose of the film is. With a strong cast this should have been able to make a bigger impact, but it fails to find its feet with no clear angle. A rather average film which fails to make any statement.

I loved this film. Very relevent story for the present day. Brilliantly sharp and witty dialogue. I normally go out of my way to avoid Tom Hanks as he annoys me as an actor but he was superb in this.

A good watch with fabulous acting as you would expect from Tom and Julia! Not one to settle down with if you fancy an easy and light hearted film though, you do have to concentrate otherwise you will loose the plot and get lost in the steps of history. An educational film in addition to the good acting, especially considering the current problems in Afganistan. Rent or buy if you want something more than light entertainment.

I really enojyed this movie, it was a very good political drama. The acting was tops and the story due to being based on a true story was catching.

this film was a great soulution for people who cant sleep ,because thats what it did for me it sent me of to sleep . a mish mash of american jargon fast speaking nonsense , perfect cast ,but for me was a waste of acting talent in the highest degree . i have only given it one star just because of the cast , apart from that it was a very drull film ,sorry not my cup of tea.

Average film, very slow in parts. There is a real message to the film at the end that is thought provoking shame that the 1st hour of the film never takes off.

Perhaps if one didn't have to listen to Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts speak in Texas drawl, I could be more positive about the film but the fake accents obscured my ability to be very objective. While interesting to know about the involvement of an obscure (to me) Texas congressman in helping defeat the Russians in Afghanistan, the film itself is rather a yawn - doesn't even really qualify as good mindless entertainment. Phillip Seymour Hoffman is always a joy to watch- he can morph physically and intellectually into almost anything. Thank goodness for his presence in the movie.

An interesting insight in to the Americans involvement in the Soviet Union invasion of Afghanistan, Charlie Wilsons War begins somewhat pointlessly with Charlie Wilson (Hanks) receiving an award from the Clandestine Services for his part in helping Afghan rebels overcome their oppressors. From there on we are introduced to the real Mr Wilson, a bit of a cad who likes to be in the company of gorgeous women as much as he likes his liquor. Inspired in to action by one said gorgeous woman (Roberts) for not entirely the right reasons, Wilson visits the Afghans himself and is galvanized into action in what he sees. Based on a true story, Wilson is portrayed as a flawed man, a little reckless in his personal life, but deep down a man of his word. Having gone into this move blind it was not hard to spot quite early on that this had the hallmarks of an Aaron Sorkin script as any fan of The West Wing or Studio 60 could instantly spot his quick witted, well written style. When it comes to the murky world of American politics there’s not a hell of a lot that Sorkin doesn’t know which to a Brit can be a little perplexing as the dialogue banters along at such a speed that you find your self hitting the skip back button in order to get what the hell just happened. One character that encapsulates the Sorkin style is Gus played rather brilliantly by Philip Seymour Hoffman (looking somewhat quirky with his large glasses and almost Elvis-esque bonnet). The CIA agent who becomes Wilsons go to man is a vastly intelligent and dry humoured, not afraid to say what he thinks and delivers his lines with such a verve that you can imagine he absolutely loved playing this guy. He’s was the best person in it by miles although the appearance of Ken Stott was a nice touch. Now if I asked you to name one bad Tom Hanks film recently you’d probably be hard pushed to do so (although I would have to say The Da Vinci Code. Oooo controversial…..). And while this is by no means a bad film from Hanks, he is quite simply mis-cast. It is tough to imagine the clean living, straight up Hanks as a womanising chauvinist and he just doesn’t pull it off. This is a problem with actors who produce their own films in that they are able to position themselves in the lead role because they want it, rather then think out of the box and look for a suitable lead. George Clooney or indeed long time Sorkin collaborator Bradley Whitfield would have been far better choices. Obviously the fact that deep down Wilson is a good guy compelled Hanks to play him but he just doesn’t pull it off as well as should have. Another waste of time is Julia Roberts, who is also badly miscast. She doesn’t suit the role of the wealthy socialite Joanne Herring, who is something of a smarmy posh bint (something Roberts certainly is not) and unfortunately has never looked as bad in any other movie as she does in this one. Considering this woman is a central focus in the world of Wilson, it is therefore perplexing that it is strangely overlooked, with her screen time small at best and somewhat haphazardly thrown in at certain points making it hard to understand the development of her character. Another unfortunate point of this film is its transition from political bio-pic to documentary montage three quarters of the way in which was to be honest unnecessary, and probably one of the worst montages seen since the Karate Kid. Something that started so promisingly soon descends into politicking (which is probably to be expected) finishing on a quote from Wilson himself about the nature of the US not finishing what they started. This form of soap-boxing was something that ruined Sorkin’s Studio 60 (a programme about a Saturday Night Live style show that turned into a commentary on the Iraq war???) and although in a better arena here still isn’t really necessary when telling the story of one of the US’s so called unsung heroes. Charlie Wilsons War is a decent watch to those interested in political films of The West Wing Ilk, and definitely watch it for Hoffman. Just try to take Hanks and Roberts with a pinch of salt though….

Even if you don't like Tom Hanks, it's hard not to like this smart, funny, fast moving political drama. Written by Aaron Sorkin of West Wing fame - the dialogue is exceptionally quick, witty and spell binding. Seymour-Hoffman steals the show in a movie that George Bush should watch over and over. It contains some of the greatest clever lines you will see on a screen - 'It must be great to be me'.

I quite enjoyed this film and thought the acting was really good. For someone who isn't a political or historical expert it was interesting as well.

As a huge Aaron Sorkin fan this was a must see for me. How historically acurte this is, I cannot say, but its very good entertainment. Aaron Sorkin continues to deliver with wit, charm and intelligence and never talks down to his viewers. The dialogue lived up to expectations and caught the attention. As always Tom Hanks delivers. A shady but good intentioned character, I suspect that the original was more seedy. Not sure about Julia Robets with wig and makeup became a strange looking woman. Its based on fact and the resulting reality we see on our screens every day. Makes you think while entertaining.

Exellent gripping film that has you intreged by the way American politics is conducted, although its a film you cannot seem to think that it's true to life actions of the congressman.

I must admit this is not my usual genre of movies but I found this fascinating. I'm unsure as to whether the story is totally true but very beliveable. Slow to start but once the plot line was revealed hard to turn away. It brings home how the big nations can effect the outcome of war via the back door. Some of the scenes were disturbing and brought home the vicious and unnecessary suffering that war creates. It also highlights that major nations should not be too complacent about the under dog. Great movie.

the review from York is spot on - this was a very disappointing film which managed to be so poorly scripted that the superb cast were completely uninteresting and bland - quite an achievement. The film peters out just when the story gets interesting - there is no mention of US support for Osama bin Laden or the Taliban - surely the point of the film was lost by not following some of the consequences of this support ........ some people say 9/11 was a result of not supporting the Russians in their fight against fundamentalism - the cold war blinding the US to what turned out to be greater dangers - what a shame I have to bore you with this - the film could have done it so much better!

I see a good many reviewers didnt like this film. Well I did. I thought the cast was spot on ( julia roberts mayne not), I thought the dialogue was witty and clever. Philip Seymore Hoffman was great. And its interesting that its pretty close to what happened in true events. Rent it, was good.

An interesting film with a glimpse of humour. I never knew who Charlie Wilson was until I watched this true story. What an interesting guy with a real sense of purpose. The film tells the story of how America armed the Afghans so they could defend themselves from slaughter by the Russians.Believable characters ( well Charlie Wilson would have to be believable , he exists!) I really enjoyed this film.

It was a very open,honest, celebratory account of how one senator managed to fund with US Govt's cash the Mujahadeen's fight against the Russians. But overall it made me sad because ultimately this is going to come back and bite everyone in the backside. It's a very watchable film. Tom Hanks is very convincing as Charlie Wilson and the feel of the era is accurately depicted through the clothes, cars and material icons of the time.

I wish I had never even placed this film on my DVD list and wasted the chance to receive a better one. Yes, Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts are both good actors (although Julia is unfortunately looking a little more haggered these days) but could the makers have not at least given us a story with a decent plot that's about something film viewers are actually interested in! If you want to waste a couple of hours doing something only slightly more interesting than watching paint dry, watch this film. If not, don't. At this point, I haven't read any of the other reviews on this site, however I assume they will read much the same as this one. I truly feel sorry for the idiot (or idiots should there be more than one - if that is possible) who recommends that you rent this film.

Huge disappointment - the script was corny, the acting mediocre except for the Greek CIA man, and a potentially important story spoilt by weak plot. Total lack of sensitivity and highly patronising.

If you're not into American politics don't even bother with this film, unless you've lost your sleeping tablets and need a substitute! Like many other reviewers here, I expected better from Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, but I guess they are not to blame for the impenetrable plot and poor direction. I was lost in a matter of minutes and we both fell asleep several times. True story it maybe, but it's mighty dull. Don't waste your money.

A difficult one to write a review about because I genuinly enjoyed the film but I can't really say why. The story was great but then the truth usually is. The acting was polished and slick as you would expect from Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts. I did find most of the charactors forgettable however, but mostly, the plot revolved around 3 people who held the film together well and gave me a little history lesson to boot !

I didn't enjoy this film at all. It's all about how big business gets involved in war and politics, which may be true, but there is another world outside of the u.s.

I love Tom Hanks and had great expectations, however this movie failed to keep me awake... never a good sign!

Interesting & watchable even if implausible

What? I don't drink tea or coffee, ok? I also don't like this film. And I'm a big fan of Tom Hanks too. To be honest, I know nothing about the Cold War or american history or politics. I'd seen the trailer and thought it was gonna be a funny, witty political drama like The West Wing, which I really like. Unfortunately, I didn't find it at all amusing and the whole thing bored me half to sleep. I gave it a fair go before I decided I had better things to do. From what I've read it seems to be an aquired taste - some people hate it, others love it. Personally, it wasn't for me and even a great cast that I'm fond of couldn't save it from being turned off and replaced with The Emperor's New Groove (hey don't mock! that's a great movie!) I'm sure if you have more of a knowledge of political stuff and you like to read the dictionary or something, then you'll like it. But for those of us, like me, who prefer childish Disney films then it's a real bore. It's a bit of a sleazy film too at times. Just thought I'd throw that in there. Oh and lastly, I have got to say how bloody annoying the DVD is. When you put it in the machine, the first thing to play is a 10-15 minute long trailer about HIV in Africa. If you've already seen it, it's a big pain in the butt. Pressing skip, fastforward etc. does nothing. You can press any button on the remote, even STOP and it won't stop playing. You can either take the disc out and sling it or quit bashing the remote about and watch it. Highly irritating if you wanted to repeat view the disc. Personally, I just left it and got myself a nice cup of milk.

We were all set to watch Charlie Wilson's War, which seemed like it might be a decent flick. Instead of the titled movie, we were treated to a UNICIF promo narrated by Gwyneth Paltrow. It was one of those things that were locked in, like a 'don't copy this disc' announcement. Here's my beef - 1. I rent movies to watch movies. If I want to see Gwyneth Paltrow, then I will select a movie in which she is acting. 2. I don't need a lecture by some hollywood starlet, telling me about the problem of AIDS in Africa. Maybe she could take less of a paycheck in her next film and donate the proceeds to her cause. 3. I don't appreciate not being able to skip the commercial in question. 4. To add injustice to misery, the film itself would not play. Whenever I tried starting it, it just looped back to Gwyneth trying to educate me for my own good. Maybe I'll get around to seeing Charlie Wilson's War, but I'm not going to risk it as a selection from Love Film.

Fantasticly pertinent to the current political stage. Hanks is not remotely sacharine.

Hanks is good but Philip Seymour Hoffman steals the show as a downbeat CIA operative. Thoroughly enjoyed this film.

an excellent film worth viewing

I've read thick books and watched educational films but I couldn't get into this at all. American politics, although I'm sure it effects us profoundly in real life, left me unmoved on the screen. I didn't care one bit if Tom Hanks lived or died and I'm not sure if he did because I didn't catch the end.

I know its based on a true story but was lacking something. If i were American i'm sure i would have thought more of it.

I wonder what the Afghanis would say about this 'true' story? It really skimmed over the real storyline, focussing more on Charlie Wilson's party-animal lifestyle. Didn't like the characters, therefore, found it hard to see beyond that and enjoy the film.

I expected so much more from this film. I don't quite know what the actors were thinking when taking on roles in this film. I mean come on Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, you can do better than this. Supposed to be a political comedy/drama. But it's really like a fascist beurocrat sex fest. Aimed at the lowest common denominater, male pubescents, this film does little to impress, on any level. If you have half a brain cell, you would be wise to give this one a miss. Does not teach you anything worth knowing about war or the poilitical system and as for the acting well its just the worst i've seen. Newcomer Amy Adams actually did a better job than some of the bigger names. All in all and totally horrendous film.

One of the mnost enjoyable films I've watched in ages. Struggled with those mumbled american accents at times, but Tom Hanks and Philip Seymore Hoffman are both excellent, and do justice to an intelligent script. Made mne laugh out loud, and kept me enthralled. Don't miss the extras on the disc - the astonishing thing is how close to the truth the film turns out to be.

Not a bad film but quite mediocre in places. All good actors with Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks but the film just seems a little pointless as the story wasn't that interesting.

I realise that some people, mostly thoughs with no interest in American politics may find this film uninteresting, but if the viewer has even a slimmer of interest in the workings of the US Congress then this film is great. It doesnt take itself far to seriously and plays on the Charlie Wilsons extravert chracter. Tom Hanks gives a very good performance of a Congressmen from an area of Texas where they dont want to much, thus allowing him to do alot of favours for people. However the performance of Philip Seymour Hoffman is what makes the film, he is as per usual outstanding and completely steals the whole film as a disgruntled CIA agent who happens to know absolutely everything but is not that diplomatic... It does have a serious point that is touched on at the end and portrays American foreign policy in its usual bad light and makes you think a bit. All in all its a really enjoyabel film that boys will most likely enjoy more than girls (please dont get offended by that one and all, I realise it is a bit of a genaralisation!)

Great Cast - Film not as good as the trailer !

Didn't whether I would like this fil or not as it had mixed reviews for cinema release but i thoroughly enjoyed it. All the the major stars played good parts, it had a good plot and it had plenty of pace. If it is true it is amazing how this war was funded and fought and why we are in the mess that we are, in Afganistan. It's not about war really though it's about the way the American political system works. How pressure groups subvert the system to further their own causes. Recommended

Overall, somewhat disappointing. I felt that the treatment of the subject matter - how the US got involved in Afghanistan - was too 'Hollywood'. There was also some really schmalzy stuff about (sanitised) refugees that did not ring at all true. Having said that, both Tom Hanks and (especially) Julia Roberts put in terrific performances. The film was absorbing, at times amusing and above all mildly thought provoking. I just wanted something sharper, more gutsy and more believable.

Tom Hanks again at his best as an American Congressman who pleges to help defeat the Russians during the Cold War. A formidable performance from Philip Seymore Hoffman who is brilliant and quickly becoming one of my favourite actors.

Going on the ads for this dvd I was expecting it to be well more than what it actually was, I was rather disappointed. It's not a bad movie, just not a great movie and the story is just lacking something.

For the most part a sharp and savvy critique of American misadventures in Pakistan and Afghanistan, the casting of Tom Hanks slightly gives the game away that this is going to be 'diplomacy for dummies'. Nevertheless in the multiplexes of the mid West if even a flicker of foreign policy imagination catches light it will surely be a good thing. There is cynicism aplenty and a dollop of shoot'em up Team America action but its heart is ultimately in the right place, even if it cops out at the end and there is no explicit 21st century epilogue showing how, in arming the Mujaheddin in the 80s, America has reaped the whirlwind of the Taliban in the Noughties

My goodness - quite how this film has acheived such high Lovefilm rankings is anyones guess. Watching this was about as much fun as a walk through the park on a wet January day. WIth a strong cast I had expected more, not only was I lost most for most of the time but bored. I decided to go to bed halfway through. My partner fell asleep woke up and re-wound it then prompty fell asleep. This happened about 3x - he then gave up. Don't bother - do some housework instead - you'll feel more satisfied!

Stellar performances from Tom Hanks and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Ending is a bit of a damp squib but overall quite an entertaining film.

Good film Some great lines from Tom Hanks

Once you got your ear tuned to their fast paced southern American accents it was quite a good film. Pretty deep and obviously political, providing you're up with current affairs and know your global war history it's alright. Julia Roberts wasn't great, which was a shame as she's usually outstanding. Tom Hanks was only ok too, but quite dissapointing.

From the off i knew i would like this film, Tom Hanks sitting in a hot tub in the middle of a Vegas Hotel room with 3 naked women doing cocaine and drinking expensive whiskey, knowing full well the story is about America funding Afghanistan to ensure they can fight back towards the invading Russian army that will cease any talks of a cold war progressing into a real war. I realised this film would be for people who was unaware of the current affairs during the 80's without all the complicated blink and you will lose plot story telling of other films. Tom Hanks plays senator Charlie Wilson going well out of his way to help fund Afghanistan towards this Guerilla war they cant yet win, to win they need $40 million, the current budget is $10 million. In order to get the funding Charlie meets some real characters and pulls some below the belt strings and this makes it all the more fun. Philip Seymour Hoffman plays a CIA agent Gus Avrakotos who is excellent at his job but cant help piss others off and provides the necessary intelligence to ensure the money is spent accordingly, Julia Roberts play the 7th richest woman in Texas who seems to be like a muse for all the dealings and also Charlie Wilson bit on the side. I found the film to be in 2 halves, the first is a very slapstick kind of look into the life of Charlie Wilson and the way he operates his business, it all seems a little bit unreal but the film does start with the infamous line of 'this is based on true events' The 2nd half gets a little bit more serious and gritty which involves Charlie and Gus meeting up with leaders from oposing sides to get them involved with a war which they really want to avoid, but lets not piss America off hey? and also visits to refugee camps in northern Afghanistan to see what horrific injuries children have sustained and camp fire horror stories about Russian torture. This pulls at the heart strings of Charlie but to the viewer you just need to look at the bigger picture of whats happening now. The problem with this film is it does come across a little to simplified, i realise that was an asset to begin with but looking back everything doesn't actually seem that much of a struggle, 'i need anti tank missile guns and guns that will blow up Russian helicopters' 'speak to this bloke'? next scene we have all the required weapons what now? This may have somthing to do with the 97 minute running time which is unheard of when political dramas are involved. And of course is this not just a big message to the current government holed up in the White House to say, the war we are fighting now has been caused by America itself??? This film is well worth a look but don't expect a JFK, in depth analysis of the goings on during Charlie Wilsons War.

A very watchable docu-drama (sort of...) which is essentially about moving huge amounts of American dollars, to another, poorer, and less able to defend itself, country. It's the conniving, grovelling, and seriously political motives behind the high movers which makes makes this such an engrossing film, and to this end, the actors played their roles superbly well... If you can stand the politics then it's worth a watch.

Enjoyable flim with some really good one liners from Phil Hoffman as the CIA agent. Tom Hanks is as good as he always is. Worth watching.

I was expecting more from this star studded cast. However the film failed to stand up to expectations with me just watching the film to see if it got any better. A disappointing film which I was expecting better things from.

What a great story! I loved Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts together as well as some great scenes with Philip Seymour Hoffman. Everyone should watch this film with it being a true story and it's so nice to see a politician actually do something good (for a change).

I have to admit to not really getting to grips with the political nuances in this film but the performances were excellent and must be watched if only for the scene where Julia Roberts use a pin to unclog her freshly added mascara ( ouch!)

This really is a must see if you remember the Russian Invasion of Afghanistan. Hanks plays Charlie Wilson the sole voice to support the Afghans against the Russians. How the plot unravels demonstrates the 'not what you know, but who you know' side of politics. Well worth renting

I struggled to stay awake.

This is a very enjoyable film. Informative, funny and (dare I say it) heart warming. Tom Hanks and Phillip Seymour Hoffman are, as always, fantastic and I'd recommend this film to everyone. Watch it!

In my opinion it's an okay movie. Not gonna win movie of the year or join anyone's classics collection but a reasonable watch. For me the problem is the casting of Charlie. Tom hanks still looks like the kid in ' Big ' , just older. I kept thinking how different the film would be with let's say.. Jack Nicholson as Charlie Wilson. How differently he would deliver those ironic or comedic one liners. His scenes with the ladies and their love of Charlie. How he would deliver the lines about drinking with the Afghans or dealing with the press exposes. In short, it would be a whole different movie. I also thought the music score of upbeat classical whilst people were being killed and planes shot at, was a bit strange. Despite being a fan of Philip seymour hoffman, he was also dull in this movie.

Much has been written about the vapid script and feeble character development, all of which this reviewer agrees with. However the most insulting flaw in this film is its glamorisation of a shameful side of American politics. The film's setting is full of narrative potential - for example, the 'cowboy' politics of the Reagan years and the subsequent undermining of US democracy, or even possible parallels between Soviet-occupied Afghanistan and contemporary Allied-occupied Afghanistan. Instead, the story weaves a Good vs. Evil scenario where, like in '24', we are urged to suspend our critical thinking in favour of the hero. The US are presented as ultimately 'good' despite engaging in unconstitutional behaviour and starting an illegal war. The Soviets are simply 'bad', while the film completely ignores the circumstances that led the Soviets to occupy Afghanistan - a violent civil war. This is not, in any way, a defence of Soviet strategy in Afghanistan - which was heinous and cruel - nor simply another rant against America - for they have done positive things as well negative. The thrust of my criticisms is that a film about such a sensitive and multi-faceted subject should never be boiled down into such a black and white 'Us vs. Them' movie.

Good sharp film about Afghanistan

This film sees both Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Philip Hoffman on top form, a fast paced intelligent movie which depicts a simple theme, whilst it may appear a little slow in places this only adds to the story. It takes you benind the doors of the american government in what was an important era of history one that could have changed how we are today and yes they messed up, brings events in the world today in sharp focus. Beautifully acted by the leading characters, it is surprising thought provoking. This one is a must watch.

Much better than I thought it would be, although the end leaves you with unanswered questions. Julia Roberts is slightly unconvincing, the other characters are well played. Very pro-Amercian/anti-Russian, although if based on a true story it will of course be telling the tale from the US angle. Lots of funny moments and witty one-liners. Overall well worth watching.

An amazing story that would be seen as far-fetched if it weren't based on factual events and people. Well acted with a good cast - this is a thought provoking movie. What would have happened if Charlie had not intervened - and more pertinent to recent events - what would have happened if his post-war reconstruction recommendations had been implemented?

This is very much like an American version of a British period drama. Good character development and script, shot in authentic looking settings. Keeps you interested, and has a point to make.

I recommend Tom Hanks most recent film, Charlie Wilson’s War. Based on a true story, this is a shrewd film that tells the story of one influential person to rid Afghanistan from Soviet occupation. In this context, I had a lunch discussion with Lee Hamilton who verified most of the details. The script and the acting in this film are superb.

Couldn't make head nor tail of this - the broad American accents make it difficult to understand. Gave up after about 40 minutes. Shame, cos normally you can't go wrong with a Tom Hanks movie

I started to watch this film and turned it off after 10 minutes because I thought it was boring but then realised that I had not really given it a chance. I watched it from start to finish and it was better than I thought. It says it was based on a true story and therefore is quite bizarre what the Americans did for Afganistan helping them fight the Russians and now the Americans are fighting in Afganistan.

Well i've just read some of the reviews, as i always do before writting my own (just to see if i can get a different insght into the films i 've watch bah blah blah blah.) and i'm a bit miffed!! i really enjoyed this film, i thought the acting was tops, the story was very informative; taking into consideration the reputation of Hollywood and 'true story' based films :0) and i'm thinking of U571 here!. The Storyline in a nutshell - basically it's the story of how and why (or some of the how and why) America got involved with the confict between the Russians and the Afgans and maybe where some of the current ill feeling comes from! Hanks plays a womanising, drinking senator that is touched by a visit to a Afgan refugee camp in Pakistan, Roberts who plays a, well basially an infuentual religous nutter (Ameican stylely you know the ones) and Hoffman plays whats seems to be an agent who's apart of a very select group of CIA agents who actually know what is going on and maybe how to sort things. All three performances were amazing especially Hoffman (but this is something i've come to expect from him). I'm sure the film wasn't trying to be anything inparticular - it's just a film about the American involvement in Afganistan from an or view point of view or a very clever propaganda film ;0) as they dont come of in it to bad..... really. get this film on your list if like me and you never really understood why so many Afgans ( or thats the way it seems) hate America - when once upon a time the Americans helped them to rid Afganistan of the Russians, something they might not of been able to do without their help. Well this film can shed a bit of light on th whole subject. But i dont think it did feel likr that it felt more like a funny dependant on your sense of humor) over view of the whole situation. Give this one a go it's a lot, a lot better than other recent American Political films i.e Lions for Lambs. Nice one

Although slow to unfold this storyline is heart warming and captivating. It was an intelligent, thought provoking film based on a true story. Tom Hanks performance was both amusing and believable as he portrayed Charlie Wilson. Really enjoyed this movie, one of the best in a long time.

Charlie Wilson's War was an entertaining, if not exciting story, which is all the more interesting because it is based on a true series of events. I like Tom Hanks and he plays the lead role nicely. However, I felt that Julia Roberts' performance was less than convincing.

The first 20mins were not good for me - had trouble concentrating on what actually was being said. Im not someone who takes an interest in politics but to the credit of the film it did keep my interest long enough to get to the more viewable rest of the film.

DOn't judge a person by their cover. The US think they are the Sheriffs of the World but then it comes back and hit them in the face. That's probably the moral of the story behind this film. I liked it though, it had even some humorous moments. Worse a shot.

Tom Hanks is great and I was surprised at the humour in the script. The political situation portrayed in the film makes you think and some of the characters are not very likeable at times, but we enjoyed the film and would recommend it.

I'm a bit biased here, as I have never yet been disappointed with Tom Hanks. Once again he gives us an utterly believable character and a story that really draws you in.

This film is about shady American politics and eighties history but it's more fun than it sounds. It's fairly low-key and there are no explosions or shocks, just a really interesting story with a compelling main character (Tom Hanks as a hedonistic congressman). Although hugely over- simplified, it gives an eye-opening insight into America's involvement in Afghanistan in the eighties and how political ineptitude led to present day terrorism and occupation.

OK, so the USA stick their nose in abroad, in a country and culture they don't understand, and it costs them millions of dollars and the lives of 1,000's of people. Sound familiar? I just hope Obama watches this....

We took a long time to get round to watching the film bt when we did we enjoyed it. It's entertaining, holds our attention quite well, thin plot, but very watchable - inoffensive, innocous, un memorable middle of the road entertainment which makes a good alternative to watching a drama on Alibi

I watched this film on the strength of a recommendation from a family member. Although the subject matter sounded like my type of thing, one major reservation troubled me: it has Tom Hanks in it. My fears were seemingly confirmed in the first few minutes as, with melancholic trumpet solo, Tom stood there looking like he was about to start blubbing. Fortunately what followed proved my fears for the most part to be misplaced. The story is adeptly told - there are a number of differing strands that need to be brought together in order to give a sense of the activities of the Congressman in respect of covertly providing weapons to the Afghans in order for them to resist the Russian invaders. The quick pace and sharp dialogue certainly work in this regard however in terms of our appreciation of Wilson, who he was and the reasons why this hard-partying, womaninsing and seemingly rather liberal public representative should suddenly find a cause in the plight of the Afghans suffers. It appears as though he enjoys the wheeler-dealing in Congress than any sincere feelings for the refugees he sees on a visit to Pakistan. The impact that the personal scandal that threatens to engulf him has also isn't adequately explored for my liking. Hanks does a good job in his portrayal of the Congressman although I preferred Philip Seymour Hoffman's character purely because PSH is a genius and Hanks isn't. The film itself does have some insight as well that moves it up to 3 stars - the postcript indicates the problems Wilson thought may happen if infrastructure in Afghanistan is not improved following the end of aggression. Plan for the the war, but neglect the period afterwards, where have I heard that before...

Brilliant Watched it twice back to back. One of those films that you enjoy even more 2nd time round. Lots of bits you miss 1st time. really recommend this film. Tom Hanks & Julia Roberts you cant go wrong.

xellent thought provocing movie

I Really enjoyed this film. Although i cannot pretend to fully understand all the goings on within the washington walls- i found this truly facinating! This film cleverly balances moments of humour and sadness , which is so hard to do when combating such a serious topic. Loved the performances from Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts. Was very suprised by how convincing the leads were as the characters they were playing. Definately worth watching!

Shows the cynical side of why certain countries go to war and why they don't care about the after effects. Godd but could be a bit too dry in certain places.

This is a well acted, powerful film clearly displaying the ineptitude shown by the americans over afghanistan after helping them so much during the soviet-afghan conflict ,of which the ramifications are all too apparent to this very day. Well worth a watch, will make you ponder and analyse the decisions made and is sure to make you question 'what if'!!!!

It can be used as motivational patriotic movie- all beautifull powerfull USA helping and saving the rest of the world. That's about it about the plot. Greast cast though,that's where the 3 stars coming from.

Tome Hanks directed this film and seemed to like his own acting best despite it being very difficult to understand his dialogue. I went to bed half way through and my husband stuck it out. He wished he had gone to bed early too.

My limited knowledge of Afgahnistan's battles with the Russians meant I took exception to this Hollywood version of events. The facts are probably true, and perhaps Charlie Wilson deserves hero status for supplying a billion dollars worth of covert weapons to the conflict. I'm far from sure. And I'm not sure that an unquestioning 'romp' starring nice guy Tom Hanks is anything other than a disastrous error of judgement for all concerned..

After half an hour got fed up waiting for something to happen, Julia Roberts is so wrong for this film, I agree George Clooney would have made a better Charlie Wilson, but too bored to bother. Films have to engage an audience a lot sooner, don't waste your time renting this one.

An absolutely tear jerker; very well directed, I was totally absorbed in the film, not a single boring moment, highly recommend.

This film is somewhat interesting but not outstandingly so, mostly due to its inability to stick to a particular genre. The subject matter of the film is designed to explore a part of history that many will not know much about and succeeds in displaying the conflict and balance of power that exists in the middle east. Rather than portray this in a serious attitude the producers chose a lighthearted approach, but the comedy displayed is hardly laugh out loud and at times feels tacky and undermines the message the film is trying to get across. Despite this, the story is well structured and makes an enjoyable watch, if not a feature film. I would not hurry to watch this film again.

brilliant very witty

I didnt enjoy this. I think this was because I was disappointed. The trailer and advertising for this movie made it over rated for me. Tom Hanks is great as always and Julia Roberts well I was a little disappointed by her performance, especially her accent and normally I lover her. Id recommend it if you want to have a better understanding of what happened back then but thats about it.

Great acting, highly improbable characters! Despite being based on a true story, Charlie Wilson is played as supremely charismatic Lothario, which put me in mind of a portly retired James Bond! This rose tinted reflection is the least of this film's crimes when it comes to the tale of how the US ultimately armed the Taliban! Dealing with the CIA's response to the Russian war in Afghanistan, by spending ultimately billions on arming the Mudjahadeen. The audience are supposed to whoop and cheer as the eponymous hero persuades Congress to spend more and more on arms. Ignoring the fact that Bin Laden was one of these freedom fighters and side stepping the awkward issue that these same weapons are, and continue to kill British and US troops today, the film avoids telling a complex story with a context that is relevant today, by merely concentrating on an implausible portrayal of good ol' Charlie Wilson. Wonderfully acted, but I found the way the context was treated actually pretty offensive!

Oh dear! A film that promises so much but panders to the stars. The script is banal which is covered by the speed of delivery by Tom Hanks. Julia Roberts plays an unbelievable sympathetic support of the Aghans whilst holding a 'slave auction'. At best, this is an insult to the actions of the long suffering people and the soldiers drafted into this action. Tom Hanks should apologise for prostituting his acting skills in a mediocre story which whilst based on reality has been strongly rescripted for one reason - an oscar for its poor undeserving stars.

I have rated this film as zero stars not because the film was bad, I actually enjoyed watching the film, but because of the trailer at the beginning of the disk. This was a 4:30min trailer for UNESCO (I think) about AIDS. The problem with the trailer was not the length or the subject, but by the fact that the disk did not allow you to skip to the menu or fast forward through it. I had to sit through 4:30 min of rubbish - I actuall muted it and waited until the menu appeared. A waste of my time which has made me far more likely never to give money to UNESCO. The odd thing about this advert and disc is that after the UNESCO rubbish there was an anti piracy trailer which you could fast forward through. So what is this saying to the viewer - that the movie company does not care about piracy. I do not rent DVDs to watch trailers. I rent them to watch the movie!

This was a super story with a witty script--somehow though the 'Charlie Parker' swe saw in the docymentary seemed more exciting than the actor! But fun -and thought provoking all the same--Super performance from Julia Roberts

A really good movie to watch, would have liked more info as it was based on a true story

I picked this film because of Tom Hanks but the story line wasn't really for me so I lost interest half way through. It doesn't mean that it was a bad film but just not for me.

I could not even finish watching this film. Julia Roberts must have needed the money to co- star in this. I found the dialogue difficult to follow and the story line was poor. definitely not my cup of tea.

Describes a time when the USA and Afghanistan were best friends. How times have changed. The film keeps hold of your attention and gives you some insight into what goes on behind the scenes in World politics.

Very poor entertainment value

I didn't know what to expect from this film, and always had a feeling it was going to be a resounding failure, or a unexpected treat. Fortunately, it turned out to be the latter, with a very interesting subject being brought to life by a very well made production. Excellent performances by some of the best Hollywood has to offer, a fantastic script by the brilliant Aaron Sorkin, a beautiful score, and a fascinating fact based story. What more could you want? More explosions? Gunfights? Car chases? Oh, well...if this kind of movie doesn't inspire you, then there's always Vin Diesel. But, unlike this movie, Vin I'm afraid won't teach you much about a significant historical event. Shame that.

Top class performances as you would expect, good story, entertaining.

This film was good and really well acted but it is extremely political! I knew that before we rented it but I didn't realise just how much politics would be in it! My hubby loved it but for me, I'm just not that into this kind of thing. It's still a good film and isn't on that long for those who are like me, it's worth a look to see the amazing cast in action.

It may be a 'true' story but this was a poor film with a script full of gratituous swear words and a rather facile portrayal of political life (US) and the Afghan war. Anyone watching this would get a very skew-wiff and gungho view of America. A film without integrity.

Of course, the author and director ' did not let truth get in the way of a good story' and the film does grossly exagerate the real role iof the main character in the US Afgan politics. Good film.

Charlie Wilson's War is the best film I've seen in ages. Great story with a great funny script kept me gripped from start to finish. Tom Hanks is awesome.

A nice film actually that makes politics interesting! Tom Hanks is one of my favourite actors and he really portrayed the congressman role so well. Julia Roberts was also good but more from a supporting function. It was also good to see the female side of politics for a change. I would recommend this film for those that are looking at an intellectual, intelligent drama with a fantastic script, showing what politics is all about and how politicians live their lives and why, where the pressure points are and why? This is a film for those that want to have full understanding of how wars/ conflicts in the Middle East are created, where the influencing factors lie etc. From this point of view, I really liked the film. I am not normally one for politics but this was a good one!

I had heard dissapointing things about this film. Despite this I watched it recently and was plesently suprised. Hanks portrayal of Charlie Wilson is spot on. The supporting cast of Hoffman and Roberts are also put in decent turns. This move is enjoyable but never really steps up to higher level. My main criticism of the film was the awful SFX of the Afgan war an the unbelievable portrayal of the prime minister of Pakistan. It is worth a watch but leaves one with the feeling that it could have been so much better.

Reaganomics rule. Charlie Wilson goes to Pakistan and comes up with the solution to life, the universe and everything - fill Afghanistan full of high tech weaponry so the Mujahedin can shoot down Soviet helicopters. Yes. That'll save the world, alright. Hanks is unbearable and Hoffman is nearly as bad and the Julia Roberts character, an insane right wing extremist with pots of cash turns out to the the heroine. You will choke when the chorus of approval rises at the end. How did this ever get made? The answer lies in the last 6 words of the fianl caption befor the credits role. Hollywood being critical and searching for topicality. Hideous, horrible. Nasty.

I struggled to keep engaged with this movie - Julia Roberts hair was very distracting and Tom Hanks accent was hard to understand. The story was really good but i found it a little unbelievable.

Rather boring, not much of a plot or storyline and found the bad texan accents offputting.

Very enjoyable and a surprising tale that I hadn't heard told. Pretty right wing republican stuff though although in truth it was probably a fair portrayal of how the USA viewed the USSR in the early eighties. Enjoyable viewing and Hanks is again excellent in his role of Charlie Wilson, portraying a womanising senator with a soft spot for Afghans being oppressed by 'Russians'. Funny how the world's changed since then.

A sharp, entertaining piece of work. Tom Hanks is fine in the leading role is, but Julia Roberts and Philip Seymour Hoffman really steal it. If you like the TV series West Wing, you'll enjoy Charlie Wilson's War. Aaron Sorkin, who wrote the screen play, is the master of quick fire dialogue. Of course the timing and indeed the subject matter seem intended as a not-so-sublte dig the America's now ousted republican adminstration, but it's slick enough to not make the viewer feel they aren't being bludgeoned to death by ideology. If you want a film that both entertains and edifies, this one will do.

strange film, what i thought would be a engrossing watch turned out to be quite a political swipe at the us political mainframe. Just about watchable.

A true story very fast paced and thought provoking. It certainly gives the viewer an iunexpected understanding of how the troubles in Afghanistan developed when the Russions were in. I liked the way Charlie's passion for the Afghan people and thier country developed and grew over the course of the film. I enjoyed Charlie's sharp wit.

The more this film is based on factual history, the scarier the ramifications. It's no wonder that America finds herself in two intractable wars and is wedded to a `friend` in the middle east, the friendship of which is an everlasting millstone. It is noticeable that at no point in the film does the concept of `what's the right thing to do?` ever arise. If you are at all interested in the current geopolitics, you will find this film entertaining and educational.

Following the true-ish story of senitor Charlie wilson who during the Russain invasion of Afghanistan managed to get the CIA to send alot of firepower over to the Afghan people. Makes for a intresting film with all the back room deals and blatent lying going on in America at the time and does make you laugh at the fact they set themslevs up abit. I'd say the film is fairly entertaining with a few genuine laughs.

You'd have to be in the mood for this one, but it's very clever, very relevant if you think about the situation the US are in today, and reminded me a bit of the West Wing. You have to concentrate to keep up and understand what's going on, but very enjoyable. I've gotta say that I did enjoy this film, it was different to what I expected it to be, and that turned out to be a good thing. The story is a bit sketchy in parts so what really moved the film along is the fantastic cast! Especially Phillip Seymour Hoffman who I dont usually like...but he was a bloody riot in this, laugh a minute. Tom Hanks was charming as ever, and Julia Roberts looked very mature, but in a pretty way. Overall, bit of a loose plot but a fab cast that make up for it.

I enjoyed this film. Not immensely I might add , but enough to mention it to people the following day . The characters were strong and beautifully played . The Story kept to its agenda despite to my mind a week ending it kept me glued . All in all I like it.

I found this had a really gripping storyline - fascinating! However, the whole experience was spoiled by a VERY poor soundtrack - the sound level was so low that even with the volume up full I missed a lot of the dialogue...real shame!

Charlie Wilson was a US senator who really knew how to enjoy the perks of his job. He then heard about the plight of the Afghan population under the Soviet invasion in 1979, and decided to do something about it. This isn't really a war film, more about individuals, like Wilson, but it is still lacking as a character study. If I'm honest, the most enjoyable aspect to the film were Wilson's staff of hotties on tow, including the awesome Amy Adams, underused of course, just like everyone else in this film. The best bits were old newsreels, and a good scene with Phillip Seymour Hoffmann in Wilson's office; but this is largely an unaffecting film. The Making Of.. had much more heart, particularly where all the stars explained they didn't have a clue that the US were involved in funding the Mujaahideen, really reassuring, seeing that everyone else in the world has known since the 80s! Still, it's a strong cast, and if you do feel you need to learn about this subject area, don't be dissuaded from watching, it's still worth watching.

I enjoyed this film - it was about a subject I knew nothing of, so it was 'informative' as far as Hollywood films can inform. By far the outstanding feature was Philip Seymour Hoffman's performance. Tom Hanks is good, Julia Roberts not so good and Ken Stott pretty abysmal at putting on an Israeli accent. However the roots of the whole film are based in a true story, a piece of modern history - the war in Afghanistan and the expulsion of the Russian army from that country - and for that alone, it is worth seeing.

Although based on true story somehow does not seem quite right about it. Certainly watchable but prefer Terminal.

Poorly constructed film of a true story regarding a congressmans attempts to increasingly fund the mujahadeens war against the invading russians . Not only was it crass and ill informed , the actual point of the film which seems to be about how america doesnt 'follow through' and continue to aid afghanistan after the war , hence leading to al-quadia and the 'war on terror ' is reduced to one line at the films climax . Elsewhere nichols seems happier filming young interns in tight skirts and tops . Hanks is incredibly bad , roberts hams it up shamelessly and only the brilliant seymour-hoffman supplies any character development . Its really not a sucess at all and i found it hard watching this over simplistic, jingoistic, tripe . Avoid .

I tried to watch this film three times and fell asleep half way through each sitting. Julia Roberts was completely average. Tom Hanks pretty good but not enough to carry the film. Plot also not particularly easy to follow. No thumbs up here, sorry.

If you can get through the first 15 minutes of an appeal then the anti-piracy adverts (what a nerve) you are greeted by a movie of sorts. I rented the film on Tom Hank's previous efforts but was disappointed by this performance and the rubbish way the story has been adapted to screen. Why is it that American actors feel they need to speak fast and incomprehensibly to give the effect of power and importance cos it doesn't work!

Charlie Wilson's War is an interesting film with flashes of humour and stark reality. I profess prior to watching this film that I did not know a lot about Charlie Wilson and his links to the Mujahadeen, but Tom Hanks is enigmatic and his character does not play by the rules, but in the most charming way so in spite of yourself you find him endearing. Julia Roberts and Amy Adams are also very good (although Julia's character's novel way of separating her eyelashes is not for the squeamish). The real stand-out is Phillip Seymour Hoffman who is FANTASTIC! I would be happy to watch him in every film as he is truly great (give the man more Oscars). He is brilliant in this, watch this film just for him.

I thought it would be a great film with the list of the cast but I found it confusing and boring. I fell asleep 1/2 way through and didn't bother rewinding to watch the rest.

.. how disappointing. I have never been one of those viewers that switches off if a film fails to grab me from the start, I am more one of those that sticks it out to the bitter end even when there appears to be no hope of recovery. So for me to actually fall asleep during a film (which I did, reportedly about 45 minutes in) is testament indeed to how dull this film is! This was limp, lack-lustre and non committal.

A clever film starting out by making us want to dislike all the central characters and then gently re-habilitating each of them in turn in a subtle and effective manner. The plot regarding Afghanistan and the diplomatic (and undercover) workings of the US is as enlightening as it is educative but the sting in the tail is just as powerful as anything that goes before. Well worth seeing for an insight into the best and worst of the good ole US of A.

Found this hard to get into, very American, and somewhat unsatisfying on a lot of levels - too superficial and nothing much came of it all. Maybe an allegory - but just a bit sad to me to see how much the US sees commies as 'evil' and them as the good guys. Like Tom Hanks, but this was not him at his best.

This is worth watching for Phillip Seymore Hoffman's performance in the opening scenes. Don't expect any great political insights (it's aimed at americans) but there are some good performances and Tom Hanks is quite good as a sleazy congressman.

Wheeling and dealing of one US congressman, chairman of a committee to do with the Afghan war, to promote this war as his emotions take him, based on his encounters of the issues in the US and limited exposure in Afghanistan. Most decisions he takes have an lackadaisically emotional basis. Good cast, quick moving, interesting characters. Not quite sure whether the point is that our wars are run by god knows who.

Just rent it! Excellent funny movie where the last senator in congress you'd ever expect to actually do anything for anybody ... actually does! And then some. Basically cuts throught the cr*p to get Afganistan sorted out (with the help of a very scary high socirty lady .. Julia Roberts). Definite watchable movie.

I was really looking forward to this film, and I wasn't at all disappointed. It was a thoroughly enjoyable film from start to finish, the subject matter was thought provoking and Tom Hanks's comic timing was a real treat. If you like Tom Hanks you will love this film

Enjoyable film worth watching

Hollywood stalwarts troop out to tell this modern fable with competence and humour.

As slick as you would expect with actors of this bankability, it is nevertheless an entertaining and engaging account of a critical piece of modern history. The film clips along at a jaunty pace, though Tom Hanks barely breaks sweat in his portrayal of the central character.

Julia Roberts clearly relishes her role opposite Hanks and the two produce moments of unexpected chemistry, that offset the slightly distracting wrongness of Roberts as a short-haired blonde. Seymour Hoffman however has the best scenes, the best lines and as you'd expect, makes the most of both.

The DVD bonus features include detailed modern and archive footage of the real Charlie Wilson, which suggest that the film is a pretty accurate account of what really happened.

A must see for anyone trying to make sense of modern relations between the US and the Arab world.

Screenplay by Aaron Sorkin telling the story of an almost unknown congressman from Texas in the 80's. So we get an entertaining and not always pc story about this Democrat politician who did a great deal to get US help to the Afghans' fight against the Soviet occupation of their country - clandestine of course. You do wonder if a person like Charlie Wilson would have a chance of being elected these days! Nevertheless it's entertaining with its dialogues although it may not pass the test for a broadcast on the History Channel!

good movie, good casting, worth it watching it.

It was watchable but i found i was missing the important bits trying to make out the accents, not as impressed as i thought i would be having watched the trailers but all the same it was ok

It started of a bit slow and oh god this is going to be hard work, but you get into it as it moves along. IT A FILM its not a moral, or a new religon it a bit of entertainment and i liked it.

I didnt like it at all. I watched about an hour and turned it off. Love Mr Hanks, but not in this...I thought he had taste when it came to selecting roles, he should have let this one go.

Fantastic film that captures the typical attitude of most of the western world when it comes to Afghanistan. Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts sparkle in the roles of congressman and socialite crusader as does Seymour Hoffman as a maveric CIA operative. Great casting and a moving portrayal of Amarica's massive financing of a covert war followed by the typical dropping of that war raviged country when the fighting is over.

We enjoyed this film. We rented it after seeing the trailers, and we were concerned that we had already seen the best bits, but far from it. It was quite funny in places and Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts played their parts really well. It was nice to see Julia acting outside of her normal character roles.

First off this has both a nice tracking shot of Amy Adams' rear and Emily Blunt in lingerie. A star for each. A more rational review of the film follows... Tom Hanks uses his good guy persona to make a womanising, whisky loving congressman try to seem sympathetic when he steps in to help fund the Afghans fight against invading Russians. Despite being scripted by West Wing writer Sorkin, it was lost on me exactly how Wilson had the power to pull such strings and what his motives were exactly. The tone of the film is also very uncertain, a surprise coming from Mike Nichols who is usually strong at juggling satire and drama. If this is to be taken as satire the point that these very same Afghan rebels would turn against the US with the very same weapons sold to them isn't really hammered home. The simple minded view of the evil Russians isn't particularly humorous either and you can't help but feel that a proper review of the complex facts would reveal a far more sinister and dubious story. Apart from the initial cut of Charlie Wilson's formal honourary award presentation to him in a hot tub with strippers and his uber-cute Charlies Angels secretarial team the film seems to be taking things seriously rather than for laughs - perhaps for once the true story is just too odd to translate into fiction?!

Disappointing - expected more from this film given the original hype. OK if your'e interested in the American political system and the antics of politicians.

This film is definitely one to watch as it's based on a true story and gives you a real insight into how America helped the Afghans back in the 80's. It can be a bit political at times, but once you get passed the jargon, the story is unbelievable - all the work one man put in. The ending definitely gives you something to think about.

A very revealing story of political life in America, partly spoiled by Tom Hanks trying to talk without opening his mouth. This seems to be the trend nowadays with Americans. It makes one feel that there should a Brit on set to see if the dialogue can be understood and correct it when it reaches this unintelligible standard. It can only be helped by using subtitles. Philip Seymour Hoffman is magnificent. I would rate the film four star.

Charlie Wilson's War is a tom hanks classic with the added bonus of philip seymour hoffman being on his best. this story is about the a texen congressman who is set on getting rid of the russian communist run army covertly out of afghanistan. this film puts a real human face on the afgan people which most film tend to over look. tom hanks trys to raise funding for the covert black op's that are going on around the world he raise the money from 5 million dollars a year to what is now billions of dollars. this film was a all time classic and would be the highlight of any one collection. 9/10 very close to a 10.

Excellent film, a lot of food for thought!! Not Tom Hanks usual stuff but he should do more roles like this. Life has a funny way of coming back to bite you if you treat it badly!!! What goes around, comes around eventually!

I love tom hanks, but was v disappointed in this film just everytihng about it was boring and the actors just couldnt save it!

Yes that's what I think we had here. Clothed in politics. I don't think he was truly very interested in the sleazy side, he was a bit bored with how well he could play the congressman game, then he found something he could do, and slid it all past US government machine, a bit like Iran contra. How he did it was interesting, why he did it the same, what subsequently happened has fulfilled all the unforseen consequences predictions. It shows you life is difficult, politics is difficult, you do what you can, when you can. The idea that if he hadn't the Afghans would have been fine is weird, but clearly they haven't been fine despite his actions. War begets war, but he didn't start it. As for whether Tom Hanks was good, I would have liked a little more bling in his performance, to underline the ambiguity. Plus his attempts at a Texan drawl meant he could not OPEN HIS MOUTH, which made him hard to hear. So concentrate. The script is fabulous. And funny sometimes. Julia Roberts was sublimely mannish, loved her, she's got range and strength. Make-up was hilarious.

This was our first film club film and instantly divided us. 4 of us though it was clever, witty and really quite unique, the other 2 fidigeted and sighed throughout - yes another film Iain hated.

Thought provoking movie delivering its message well. Good performances all round and whilst quite a long one, feels enjoyable and necessary through the course. This never drags, has its moments of comedy and drama and when it ended, I wanted to watch it again. Watch it!!!

... and I won't pretend to try. But I found Tom Hanks charming and slick and Philip Seymour Hoffman obnoxious and very self assured. Together they were brilliant and I wish there was more of them together, but then, more might have detracted from the film. This isn't about stuffy or underhand politics, Tom Hanks as Charlie Wilson seems to be doing it for fun, with all that perks can provide, but his human sincerity is genuine. Hanks is slick, but Hoffman's character, although obnoxious, is confident and very enjoyable to watch, most especially when he takes a swipe at his boss. If you like the actors, get the movie. If you like the plot of the movie, get it. I doubt you'll be disappointed.

This could have been more interesting given the subject matter but ended up being full of cliche and 'larger than life' Hollwood type characters.

Based on a true story, not sure how much was what actually happened buy it was certainly acted believably.

An interesting story well portrayed, although when current events are taken into consideration it gives a different picture to the story.

Considering the cast I thought it would be a better film, but it was a disappointment. I didn't find the protagonist to be that likeable and then the whole plot was pretty ridiculous, even if it is based on a true story. The relationship between Hanks and Roberts' characters is not believeable and then when the story picks up momentum it is rushed and then dates are raced through with just headlines. It is just really dull and also confusing as to the point of the film. Is it about American policy? is it about the end of the cold war? what?? still unsure. In a nutshell just don't bother watching this film!

I watched this film when it was first released and though it was ok. However in the light of more recent events its importance as a film has escalated. Definitely one to watch! Pity it wasn't taken notice of before!

Charlie Wilsons War is an important story about the turning point of the Cold War and the biggest covert war in Americas history (or anyone else’s for that matter). This film follows Charlie Wilson a US congressman who secured finical backing from congress for the Afghani people against the mighty Soviet army. This films greatest strength is its undeniably likable cast Hanks, Roberts and Hoffman all shine as always. Hanks is particularly strong in the complex role of a womanising but highly caring politician. However this may be Charlie Wilsons War biggest problem, the compelling performances of the leads means that subject matter was possibly neglected a little in a case of lazy film making. Although this film was highly enjoyable I felt it would have benefited from a more serious tone and greater attention to the truly historic events this film portrays. This however is a small gripe and does not detract from this being a fun and enjoyable movie, however with a little bit of polish this could have been a great movie.

A first class movie well worth viewing but bound to leave a deep suspicion about politicans of all denominations throughout the world. It is very obvious the Americans are now suffering from their attempts to 'clear up' Afghanistan and how they manipulated the UK to join them in a futile war.

Tom Hanks excels in the title role as Charlie Wilson, big time womaniser, small time senator, until he happens on an Afghan refugee camp full of disabled people, and is particularly moved by the children. This slippery, rather seedy but ultimately charming man, starts the ball rolling to raise millions of dollars for the Afghan cause, against the Russians. And Philip Seymour Hoffman again brings his genius to the screen - he is never worth ignoring, whatever the part. This time, as a part-Greek CIA man working for the wrong boss (the scene with his boss when he gets told he's not going to Finland is worth a re-wind any time), he gets to liaise with Charlie Wilson. Whilst based on the truth, there may be some embroidery here, but then that's probably true of all films based on fact. Nevertheless, this was an enjoyable romp which when finished, found us asking the serious question 'So why are U.S. troups (and UK troups also) now fighting the very people they aided against the Russians in the 1980s?'

As people have said, it's worth a watch for Hoffman...Roberts barely made an impression on me...Hanks does his standard fare...neither bad nor particulalry good. It's not a bad watching experience I just really didn't know what point it was trying to make. It rankles because it seems to want to give the impression that the Americans who got involved with covertly financing this war were doing it for wholly moral reasons...which blatantly wasn't the case. Basically as a film it was fine to watch but politcally it was a joke.

Charlie Wilsons War is something of a Curio. It's neither serious biopic nor political Drama. It is ,however, an entertaining film about a slightly over the top politician. The cast is headed by Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts with great support from Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams (Who is a underused), with all doing good jobs in the roles they have. The only drawback is that (even with the subject matter) the film is a bit slight. For fans of Tom hanks this is a great little film and a nice way to kill a few hours.

Didn't expect this one to turn out to be such a gem! I found it very entertaining with some nice touches of humour. A nice fast paced yarn that wasn't too demanding. Well worth the effort of watching. not sure about the historic accuracy but why split hairs over a good story!

I love all the actors in the movie, but I found this film terrible and could only manage 30 minutes. I hope their next films are better.

Hanks is miscast in my view, as the character he played did not have that certain sang froid. He was playing his familiar jocular slightly awkward persona, there was even a bit of Gump in there! The hidden gem was undoubtedly Seymour Hoffman, who plays patsy to Hanks. An OK US political drama but not incisive enough to have any real credibility

This is one of those films that fulfils all the expectations of the articles written about this man. Enjoyment and concentration is total and one can get to understand the true nature of a continuing tragedy. Recommended

A bit of light fun, well acted but with no real heart, and not value for money. Certainly would not recommend unless a glass of wine interspliced with something you do not need to concentrate on is your intention for the vening.

It was a disappointment that Julia Roberts was in this film. Did not feel that it was the most suitable role for her.

This film is very engrossing despite being implausible. The witty dialogue and strong central performances save it from its lack of backbone. Thank goodness for Philip Seymour Hoffman's character who steals every scene he is in - unlike Julia Roberts who is lamentably mis-cast though looks fabulous despite an unfortunate wig. Loved what she did with her eyelashes using a safety pin!

This is a very good film about Charlie Wilson. But that's only because of the true story line. Very eye opening in places and funny in other places. And like a big fat 'i told you so' at the end
