P.S., I Love You  (2007)

If you've read the book and loved it, like i did, you'll be very disappointed with this film. Although i'm sure it happens all the time with Hollywood films, its only very loosely based on the book. Everything has been 'americanised'. In the book everything is set in Dublin with a lot of lovable and humourous characters which obviously the americans couldn't relate to so instead they've taken out a lot of characters which keep the book alive, added new ones which dont really fit into the story and completely changed the personalities of anyone else left in the film. There are some amusing parts of the film which keeps it moving at a steady pace, its not all bad. My friends recommended i read the book before seeing the film as they loved the book so much, but i strongly advise not to read it first if you're planning on watching the film because you'll be as annoyed as I am. If you've never heard of the book but just want to watch because you like chick flicks then you will probably enjoy it, i probably would have. A lighthearted chick flick to watch that you won't have to concentrate too much on.

This is one of those truly sadly, happy, feely good films that just make you glad to be alive, both myself and my partner absolutely loved every single minute of this. If you get chance to rent this and cuddle up with a nice bottle of whatever, just do it, not a typical Hilary Swank outing, and lets hope this propels Gerard Butler onto our screens even more he is a new George Clooney. It is a definately highly recommended rom-com par excellance. 10/10.

I haven't read the book, and won't be reading the book: the movie will do for me. I doubt I would've watched the film if hunky Butler wasn't in it, seeing as I am not a Hilary Swank fan. I liked the film and I am glad that I haven't read the book because one will always compare. But as a stand alone the film was ace for me. Of course a tad 'too fairytale' for me. Wouldn't all woman kind want a man like Gerard Butler to come home to? And a man that thinks out 10 letters before he dies to ease his wife into starting a new life is just simply quite uncharacteristic of the male species, but nevertheless very touching, A good weepie, with some good humour.Highly recommended.

as this film isnt being released until january i just thought i would let you all know there is still time to read the book by celia ahern...its well worth reading, i started the book quite aprehensive about what i was about to read but it is an amazing discovery on how men can think ahead and help a woman rebuild her life without them. its fantastic, i couldnt put it down!!

What a shame, they could have made so much of this story. Opening, before the credits, is present time, after the credits - Husband has died, without any reason or build up, and we have the ‘wake’ - therefore lacked immediate cohesion and essential link to the whole story. The true nature of the couple’s love is missing, as there was nothing to show the depth of that (save for a 5 minute ‘fight’ and a 5 second making -up sequence), or the heart rendering time of the Husband’s death - both essential, but missing - you have to assume all that the Producer/Director was too lazy to shoot/include. The remained of the film is too long, meandering, and the use of constant flashbacks rather defeats the otherwise sentimental nature of the film. Improbable, and without a definite beginning, middle and end. To watch this you need endurance and plenty of time!! Not one for the boys, and from the girls that watched, not for most of them either - the dog may enjoy it, as there is nothing to tax the mind - and he can go out for a walk, lie down, then come back without missing anything at all.

The two stars are for Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler both of whom coped adequately with a lack lustre script with way too much exposition at the beginning. It's like romantic comedy for the bored. It's got all the right ingrediants: a beautiful female lead, a funny husband [with a dodgy accent], Phoebe from Friends, a tragic death which in any other film would have been perfection but there's something missing and that's heart. The script is awful. The characters wooden. The dialogue unreal. It's okay for an afternoon when you've got nothing on but if you're expecting anything more you will be disappointed.

to anyone out there bad mouthing this movie,i have and read the book four times, the book is one of my favourate books,it is a beautiful story that makes you laugh and cry and wish you had someone that loves you that much and it gives you a glimmer of hope that maybe just maybe there is true love out there and lets face it us ladies need something to give us hope because nearly all the men out there are lazy, selfish and wouldnt know romance if it hit them in the face and the closest we get is the books and movies.i love the book and i look forwards to the dvd because i need some thing i have lost all faith in men,romance and true love because so far the books and dvds are the closest ive got to a good romantic man and true love,it does'nt exist .

Read the book and couldn't wait to see the film.Was not disappointed, loved every minute of it.Would happily watch this over and over again.Be warned though you will need the tissues, excellent girlie film!

What could have been a bittersweet take on the modern love story, instead tasted like a bad Guiness, with the runs to boot. Swank, not learning anything from Freedom Writers, moves from Hollywood heavy weight to Paddywood anorexic. Butler, trying his best to briefly milk those post 300 abs, roles out the worst accent since Arthur Anderson lost his wheat based cereals. All in, disappointing, unadventurous and unengaging. Try to get to your grave before you see this. P.S. I still love you, despite sending me this DVD.

Absolute guff!! My girlfriend loved the book, but couldn't believe how bad the film was! Important scenes were changed and the style and tone of the film were changed from the book too. She had been looking forward to it. What a let down it was for her. Most of the characters were annoying. Harry Connick Jr looked as if he was doing a poor impression of Mike Myers in So I Married An Axe Murderer. Phoebe from Friends was basically annoying slapper Phoebe. Kathy Bates was a horrible, annoying pain. At least her hangdog expression was perfectly suited to this miserable excuse of a film. Under no circumstances should you rent/buy this garbage. One of the films i have ever had to endure!

I have been looking forward to seeing this movie for a long time and I wasn't dissipointed. I loved this film and thought this was one of the best movies I've have seen in a long time. It was sad and gave me a good cry. I would recomend this film to everone.

typical boring chick flick, clever bits but otherwise predictable. Random acts of attempted tear jerkers that seem more comical than emotional. Even wife wasn't interested

This is one for the girls! I started crying 10 minutes into the film and did not finish until the end. Very romantic, very worth watching.

You to can be popular with the 'er in doors if you rent this. The film is at best mind numbing and at worst tearingly femanine however it kept her quite for a couple of hours which is why i have given it two stars instead of two fingers.

I have never cried and laughed similtaneously (sp) at another film in my life. One of the best rom coms ever! Well balanced, took you very smoothly from full out tears to full out laughter. Watch this film!

A quite excellent & engaging film. The main male character is introduced to get a measure of the man. Then we fast forward, but not too far to a point where he has suffered an untimly death through a brain tumour. He leaves a series of letters to be sent to his young wife to help her get over his death. Really excellent high grade stuff.

OMG I dont believe I just sat through 2 hours of this utter garbage. If this is a chick flick god help all you chicks coz it was boring, obvious, drawn out and quite frankly a waste of time.There were 1 or 2 humorous moments from Lisa Kudrow aka Phoebe from Friends, but otherwise I have to say this was a rather large crock ! Guys avoid at all costs.. Girls avoid unless you're watching on your own otherwise he will be asleep !!!

The first 10 minutes of this film is possibly the most annoying, pointless and frustrating start to any film in the history of film. It's a 10 minute argument where the 2 leads are unconvincing as a couple, the script is poor and certainly in Gerard Butlers case is badly acted. I couldn't work out if he was meant to be Irish, American or something else...turns out he was irish. I don't know much about him but if he is really Irish then he should probably go back 'home' and pick up the lingo again but if he isn't then I would have expected someone to say 'hey Gerard, you can't speak Irish so stop trying so hard mate' because his mouth was all contorted when he tried to talk. Luckily by minute 11 he'd died, just as I had lost the will to live coincidentally. I managed to watch through my fingers for another 15 minutes or so and had to leave the room. I know its a girls film but come on, there was nothing in here for blokes who sometimes feel they should watch the odd chick flick with their partners. Are women really this dumb that this is what they want from a film ?

depressing and too long

We've read the book before renting this, my wife keep screaming 'it never happened' or 'it's not supposed to be like this' during the viewing... Now you've been warned. The storyline diverted from the book so much that it is not recognisable... from where it sets, the dynamics of the main characters (where are the bros?), her letters, how they met, Holly's parents etc... It is a massive disappointment, the sparks between the two leads looks forced and Gerrard Bulter spent half of the movie with his top off (well that might be attractions to some ladies) and the other half on voice-over... as a romantic comedy (that's how I viewed it), it missed the romantic bits and it's nowhere near funny... P.S. This is a huge yawn.

p.s dont bother is what it should be called . I was having a good day before i watched this two words GUT DEPRESSING !

Luckily this film was so bad it didn' t upset. Being a young widow I felt it didn't even go near touching on any true emmotions.

I watched P.S.,I love you on a flight last night and it's one of the most amazing films I have ever seen!! You could really believe the love the characters had for each other and you could really sympathise with Holly's pain when she was at her low points. This film had me laughing one minute and crying the next! The storyline was so original and heart touching! I think Gerard Butler and Hilary Swank have done an amazing job with this film and are great actors. This is definitely one film I will be buying and recommending to a lot of people.

P.S i love you is a moving story of love found and lost with a great cast. Lisa Kudrow is very funny, watch with a box of tissues!

I was crying from start to finish - hardly my idea of a rom-com. Throroughly dissapointing!

I truly can't understand the bad reviews as this was such a good film, I like some romantic comedy type films but am mainly into horrors and thrillers usually but decided to give this film a go. I have watched so many lame rom coms lately that I didn't hold out much hope for this as I sat down to watch it, how wrong could I be? it was a wonderful film, so funny in parts and at other times extremely moving, I was crying my eyes out during certain scenes, sometimes with laughter sometimes out of sadness. I found the actors to be brilliant, certainly on top form and as a woman very much enjoyed seeing Gerard Butler and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (dad in Supernatural series) on screen, the film is so genuinely moving at times that I felt I was watching a real life couple being seperated by death and forgot it was just a film and the funny moments well are just classic and I just know will make me laugh time and time again. To me this movie went deeper than I thought it would, it made me think about my life, its ideal if you want a good chick flick! I am going to buy this dvd as its one of the best films I have seen in yrs.

I don't want to talk about the plot as it would be unfair to give anything away but all I do say is give it a go, you may really enjoy it like I did. Emma

I expected more from this film,not bad though.

thought I would like this chick flick, but it was awful. I'm Scottish biased but even that didn't do it for me with that terrible Irish accent. I know there was a theme of Ireland running through the film, but it was sledgehammer stuff from mobile phone ring tones to the only songs sung during the karaoke. Just appaling, I love good bad films, if that makes sense but this didn't even make it into this category.

i thought this was a sugary,corney,silly,not for men,but,if you have a girlfriend and want to impress her rent it it had my wife in tears at the end.

i wanted to watch this film as i enjoyed the book. The film was good, but for anyone whos actually lost someone the film didnt tap into the emotions of what it is actually like and for someone who has cried at neighbours im surprised i didnt cry at this film. I thought Lisa Kudrow and James Marsters were funny. The irish accents were terrible it made me cringe. Despite this the film was still good and for girls worth watching, can imagine boys not enjoying this film.

What more do you need!!!!! Any man who wants a quiet night in and wants to lie on the settee with his girlfriend and watch a movie that you both enjoy will only need this film.It has everything, great acting , great story and puts a tear in your eye. It makes you look at your own life and think do i want to be with this person for the rest of your life. Prehaps you take that person for granted coz they might not always be there............

This film was obviously a girly flick and when i started to watch it i almost pressed stop because the film script and acting is so cringingly ropey at the beginning. The film picked up and became more morose when Gerard Butler pegs it and the whole concept of the film begins to kick in - which i thought was excellent. Unfortunately the last 20 minutes of the film ruined the entire experience and made me want to rubbish the whole film. Oh and why the hell is there an Irish indoctrination theme all the way through it? I mean these people lived in the US and obviously had some Irish strings BUT didn't they do anything American? This must have forced on the film by the book writer or something because this helps break the film for me. Overall it's not a bad film but it's lucky it got 2 stars! Definitely a chick flick

I've got the book, read it many times, cried many times so I was excited there was a film coming out. My advice is if you've read the book don't bother with the film!

It might have been quite a sad/emotional film if I hadn't been laughing my head off at that sorry excuse for an irish accent!! :-)

I was so disappointed when I watched the film as I absolutely loved the book. It;s such a shame as everybody I know that has read it have nothing but praise for it though sadly the same cant be said for the film. I would steer clear of this at all costs the plot is nothing like i remember from the book and the acting is so stiff you would not believe these are proffesional actors!

This film was absolutely amazing, i dont think i stopped crying throughout the whole film. It was probably one of the best films i have seen in a long time and even though it is a cryer it still has some humerous parts in it. If you like this film i would definately recommend 'The Notebook' it is very good and also a cryer. Hope you enjoy

This DVD is ok, but I found it boring and it did not 'light my fire' Its watchable, but will not rent it again.

I read the book a few months back and was captivated. It was funny, poignent and touching. Watching the film was nothing like this. Infact I was irritated the whole way through. The story had been changed and certainally not for the better. The the casting was terrible and none of the characters were believeable. The main character Gerry was smarmy and irritating and I wasn't really bothered about the fact he'd died, Holly was supposed to be sweet and a bit dippy but this just didn't seem to work with Hilary Swank in the role. Read the book, don't bother with the film because you will be disappointed. Even if I had not read the book first I would have still marked this film as average at best.

I agree with alot of the other people that haven't enjoyed this film! I don't normally bother to do this kinda thing but it was so bad i had to! if you hadn't read the book you may think it's ok but if you've read the book u'll be highly disappointed as the story has been completely twisted! i expected an edited version but not this! the drama and emotion of the book does not come through at all - the acting is awful and the characters are totally totally wrong for their parts! most of the story is missing and replaced with awful alternatives and the whole things been totally americanised which it really didn't need! if you enjoyed the book don't bother with the film! if you liked the film u'll absolutely love the book and realise the film just didn't do it justice!!!

I really enjoyed this. It was very loosely based on the book by Cecilia Aherne, but it stuck to the general idea, even though it was extremely americanised. You'll laugh and cry the whole way through it. Brilliant film - I would highly recommend it.

This is the best film I have seen in ages and I go to the cinema once a week. I was laughing, crying and everything in between all the way through the film it was great. There are also lots of nice body's in it and sexy irish men. xxx

Absolutely brilliant. Have read the book now watched the film I can highly recommend this film if you love a chick flick and feel like a good cry! Me and my sister cried almost all the way through I am not going to tell you anything about the as this will spoil it for you. I can hinestly say this is well worth watching.

Loved the book! Couldn't put it down. Unfortunately the film was disappointing. Watch it if you haven't read the book but don't bother if you have because it is a let down. It is too Americanised and athough I knew what happened already in the end my sister who hasn't said the film was very predictable.

I read the book two years ago and loved it but this film is nothing like the book. it is not set in the same place, the main characters meet in a different way. she does not go to Ireland on a holiday because she lives there anyway! and the irish characters are a joke. If I was irish I would be offended, as for the way Daniel is portrayed what can I say. Half the Characters from the book are missing. Even the ending is flaming different and so chessy I almost puked. Ceila Ahern clearly sold the rights without checking they would follow the story. The only thing the same is the letters. If you have read the book DONOT watch this you will hate it. If you have not read the book, watch it, enjoy it if you can then read the book and realise how much better the book is.

should have known better really to expect this to be any different from the rest. but yet again it lets itself down, as it's very predictable. thats all well and good if you like that kind of thing, but if you like more of a story best avoid this.

Well worked film,great story line with plenty of laughs on the way.....A film for a weekend in with the better half....This film makes you think about what you would do if you lost the love of your life....Well worth a look.....

Don't waste you precious `sofa time' watching this awful adaptation of a wonderful book. The acting is wooden throughout, even from the normally fantastic Swank. Really terrible film!!

if you have read the book you will defin be disappointed its only the brief outline..but then again if you haven't watch the film ..then read the book..its ab fab the acting was good...esp harry connick jnr but you have to laugh at the fake irish accents...why didn't they just chosen an irish actor!!!

I watched this film recently and I was really excitedd, bought bottle wine and cuddled up. It started off great, but i was really dissapointed that you didn't really see them as a couple, only 5 minuites of the film , then he was dead. I think I remember her saying at the end it had being 1 year. I thought it had being longer judging by her mates and mum telling her to snap out of it and setting her up with blokes. The story line was really good. But when she recieved the notes, if I had just lost the love of my life ,weather or not he wrote them I couldn't just go party if he told me too. I couldn't have it in me. So i thought that was a bit silly. Hillary didn't show that much emotion either, most of the time I couldn't feel her pain. But over all it was a good film. Had a few tears.

all i can say its a great movie for a girls night in and you will need tissues because i was in tears all the way through.

I read the book last year and was expecting so much more from this film - but unfortunatley the film did not do it for me. If you havnt read the book then you have nothing to compare the film with and so would probably enjoy it!! Shame really!!!

Best love story i have seen in years,had a lump in my throat all through the fillm. Sad but good at the same time,the music in the film was also well picked to add to the essence of the story. The only thing i can pick on is the dubious irish accents.

I'm not sure about this film. I read the book and although it was an ok read, like the film it was slightly bad. It was a really good idea but just didnt come across as sincere. Anyway the Irish blokes are nice which makes up for it lacking in other areas.

I almost switched off in the first half hour in the twee little scene where the couple argue about their tiny apartment, lack of money etc etc and a lot of shoes thrown around a la Sex and the City! Gerard Butler's Irish accent was awful and the whole film was a mish mash of characters fairly far removed from the book. Midway through the film I was ready to scream if another letter of clip of Gerry popped up again!!! And then William the new love interest in Ireland also has a fake Irish accent - though slightly better than Gerry's!!

Read the book first and it was one of those books that have you reaching for the kleenex.... So I added the film to my rental list expecting a tear jerker at the very least. QWhat I actually got was a forgottable, cheesy, unrealistic film that didn't in anyway do justice to Ms Ahern's best selling book. I've given 3 stars here though because I guess if yuou've never read the book and like this sort of thing, then maybe you'd enjoy renting it for a quite night in.

Hilary Swank is amazing,...she just gets this whole acting thing down pat! Slow at times, but moving all of the time ....even the not entirely unexpected ending.. well worth the watching.

I had previousely read bad reviews about this film claiming that is was 'fluffy. I therefore did not watch it at the the cinema or buy it on dvd when it was recently released. But I was surprised when I found numerous people buying the dvd and liking it. After watching it I found it very moving and often funny. I emphasised with the characters and the plot line was excellent. I am considering buying it on dvd now and definately recommend it for a good cry. I will also be reading the book.

If you like a good soppy cry film, then this in some parts is the film for you. Gerard Butler was great in it and his chemistry with Hilary Swank was believable. Even though his Irish accent on times was dodgy. But overall a good film and quite enjoyable. Get it if you want a night in with the misses and a bottle of wine.

Not only is this extremely badly written and acted (the most shocking attempt at an irish accent you have ever heard) but the cheese that is pulled from every possible line just becomes embarrassing to watch. In chick flicks there are supposed to be a few cheesy moments but these scenes go on and on and on until you can no longer watch and yes even the girls will feel pretty queasy. The film, like The Devil Wears Prada, is absolutely nothing like the book and to be honest you just want it all to end. Don't watch it - it will be the waste of an evening!

Didn't like this movie at all, from the very first scene I just didn't feel a connection with the lead characters. THen it just falls apart from there.. I ended up fast forwarding towards the end....

Great chick flick (although my husband also enjoyed it). Well worth a watch.

How to describe it? This movie can bring you from laughing to tears in a snap of a second. It is joy to the purest level and then sadness to a point you never wish to feel again in real life. It all makes sense: it is life lived to the fullest, it is life in the great ups and the deep downs, it is life in the sparkling light of love and the darkness of death. It is simply and beautifully life.

A different kind of chick flick. Not many laughs but good acting. Hilary Swanks boyfriend dies before their wedding & before he died he sent her these letters to help her get on after he's died which is quite thoughtful of him. Sweet but a bit soppy!

This had me in tears nearly the whole way through! Perfect film if you are looking for a love story but make sure you have the tissues ready!

When you rent a title like this, you more or less know what to expect. Sad to say I did not even finish watching it. I found the acting unconvincing and the film very slow. I normally love rom coms, but this one did not do it for me. And I am a Hilary fan!

I rented this film for my mum. she said ' it was a delightful story, funny and sad through out the film'. My sister thought ' it was good, it was very sad but also very funny. The story was also very good'.

The film didn't live up to the book, in expectation or content - in fact the book was completely different. Enjoyed the book though....

Starring a few of my favourites including, Gerard Butler, Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe from Friends), Harry Connick Jr. and Kathy Bates, I watched this “chick flick”, (as some agreed) a movie full of sentimentality, based on a book I had never read by the Irish author Cecelia Ahern. The wonderful scenery of the green country, Ireland, added to an easy viewing and entertaining movie offering. The story, a bereaved woman working through the loss of a loving husband, who though dead, has managed to support her after he is gone, while she finds herself by experiences around the dynamics in her relationship with her mother, other family and friends, who are also going through various changes.

Loved this film but hubby was not as keen,said its to much of a chick flick,so sad & wanted to cry in some parts.

I love this movie it is funny, sad and in some parts very true to life. A truly great story

I've read the book already and have to say the film is loosely based on the book, but all said and done the film is still excellent - it's a weepy but you're not left sad, there's testimony to real love in there which always give you that warm fluffy feeling.

Why bother making a film so loosely based on the book that anyone who sees it will be disapointed? They turned a brilliantly written, emotional, touching and funny book into a dull, boring film where you can't even understand the 'Irish' accent from Mr Butler. Hilary Swank and Lisa Kudrow hold their own to a certain extent but the script sucks and focuses on the fights Holly and Gerry had rather than the special close relationship they had which was the whole reason for him leaving the notes and being so on tune with her in the first place. Thanks Hollywood for stinking up what could have been a brilliant movie. Bravo!

This was a seriously good film that had me on a rollercoaster of emotions. One minute I sat with tears in my eyes, the next I was howling with laughter! It is obviously a very 'girlie' film, my husband thought it was pants, but my teenage daughter agrees with me on the emotions bit! I wasn't sure about this film at first though, as I had previously tried to read the book when it first came out and trashed it as a brainless bit of chick lit. How wrong I was!

The liberties taken with the original book are a shame as the book was good but the film is a bit gloomy and sad. Not worth an evening in in my opinion.

i dunno wot to write about this film except that i loved every minute of it! [well the intro was a bit lame! & so was gerard's fake irish accent!] & girls who like me that gerard butler just doesn't do it 4 will love billy. oh yes! hehe it was sad but didn't make me cry =S i always cry too!

I can see why it did so well at the box office however I read the book on holiday a couple of years ago and the film doesnt do it justice.

Honestly one of the worst films that I have ever seen. Waste of an evening. Kept watching to see if it was really that bad and why all those actors agreed to be in it. Having said that Kathy Bates was good for about 5 minutes.

I loved this novel, so was slightly disappointed by the film. I felt that it was weaker, although the adaptations worked well. As with the book though, each 'note' had me welling up! Gerard Butler plays a good Gerry, but Hilary Swank is too glam for Holly. All in all, not an awful film, just not mind-blowing......don't let it put you off the novel.

Not much of a story... Although I did miss my mom...

We absolutely loved this film. it's got a fab cast with Kathy Bates playing her typical mumsy role, Hilary Swank and Lisa Kudrow. this is a real tear-jerker with some really brilliant acting, but there's also some comedy - we were glued to the set from start to finish. There's no fairy-tale ending but you dont feel let down either - I am actually gonna buy this movie now i've seen it on rental because could happily watch it over and over again - a bit like Love actually and the holiday. I've not read the book, so perhaps that's why i enjoyed it so much, but dont think i'd be disappointed anyway.

As often happens, the book is better than the film, eg the Da Vinci Code. Why this is the case is perhaps because it takes hours to read a book but this ahs to be captured into less than 2hours of film.

I found this film slow and no where near as heart touching as the book.

I loved the book and couldn't wait for the film but having just watched it I was sooo disappointed. The book was MUCH better.

Im writing this review literally as the credits are rolling at the end of the film, in fact, ive had my laptop on for the last 1/2 hour of the film. The idea/concept behind the film is excellent and could have made way for a really great feel good film. Its a shame that the producers didnt take a better look at the film 'Holiday' to see how to turn a good idea into a simple, but flawless film. I just seemed to drift in and out of this film, at times it seemed repetitive, the letters from the dead husband also repetitive and boring. I love a feel good film and this had the potential to be one, but i watched it in 3 sections, it was the only way id get to the end! If you want to rent an easy going film that makes you smile then you cant go wrong with Holiday, or even The Perfect Score, i thought that was very well done too.

Considering that the author was only 21 when she wrote the book I thought that this was a wonderfully mature look at love and death. The acting, the plot and humour were all top notch as was the directing and photography.

This film is quite sad, and just depressed me the whole way through. It was nice that he thought about the fact that she would need help in rebuilding her life by sending her letters every so often, but she became reliant on the letters which is just sad! I didn't really enjoy it that much, I was expecting a ROM-Com which it wasn't! There was no romance, other than the letters, and although it was funny inplaces, the depression seemed to run tthrough it a lot stronger!

Entertaining in places. But 'Ghost' did it better. sort of. And the ending is too twee.

Having read and thoroughly enjoyed the book, I was looking forward to watching a good old fashioned chick flick with some of my friends - but what a dissapointment this film was..it could have been great if they had followed the original storyline, important characters were ignored, cheesy american/irish accents were cringe worthy and we knew it was a flop when we had chatted through most of the middle - Avoid at all costs and buy the book!

I rented this after reading the book a few years ago and I found it got the story across very well. I watched it twice over 24hrs and was not dissapointed,I even got other half to sit and watch it with me and he found it a very moving film.

I knew this film would make me cry but tears of sadness were soon tears of joy - great film for a night in with a box of chocolates and tissues

I was really looking forward to this film as the book is fabulous but the film was a complete let down. It really lets the novel down, half the characters are missing so you lose alot of the story they are all suppossed to be irish and in dublin but its in america so you lose alot of the comedy and irish gags....... i was really dissapointed, they changed alot of the story and its been americanised... plus hilary swank just didn't do holly justice... bad casting in my opinion and gerard butler ... that is the worst irish accent ever known to man lol :O)

This was a wonderful film, Gerard Butler was funny, sexy and he can sing! I thought Hilary Swank was right for the role, and all the cast helped pull off a wonderful story. It was nice to see James Marsters, we've missed him since the Buffy days! This film is for the girls, kick your men out for the night and enjoy!

I found this film really good i cried, laughed and sometimes felt i was spying into someones personal times when no one should be watching.Brillant cast best film i've seen in a while.

Having read the paperback, I was not expecting the film to be as good, but I was pleasantly suprised. A good film to watch with the girls. I cried through most of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This had me laughig and crying and oooing and ahhhing all the way through. I had read the book so came to the film thinking 'it'll never be as good as the book!'. But although different - it caught the spirit of the romance of the book. A must see for all romantics out there.

Quite sad but upbeat towards the end!

i found this film to have a fast paced, interesting and original storyline and is not too predictable. Without revealing too much, it is about a young widow who had a very close loving relationship with her husband,. He finds a way of helping her come to terms with his passing.by sending her letters he wrote before he died. It is very good and definitely worth a look.

THE BAD NEWS: After I finished reading Cecilia Ahern's novel 'P.S. I Love You', I was disappointed. The story was a great idea, the perfect chick-lit topic. Unfortunately, Ahern didn't manage to pull off the charming, touching and very human story she intended. The main character, Holly Kennedy, ended up a pathetic whiner and by the end of the book I was thinking 'just get over it already!!!'. THE GOOD NEWS: I can count on one hand the similarities between the novel and the film. The screenwriters (Ahern was, thankfully, not one of them) took the fresh, interesting idea and ran with it. Other than names and basic plot points, the film is totally different than the book. The characters are sympathetic, Holly is charming and funny - someone us girls would hang out with. Even the setting is different (book: Ireland, film: New York City.) When a friend dragged me to the movie (yes, she had to drag me - after that awful book, I had no desire to waste 2 hours on the movie), I was not hopeful. Five minutes into the movie I was hooked. I loved it. Cheers to author Cecilia Ahern for her great idea... and for not participating as a screenwriter - she did us all a favor there. Only one thing - have never runned into any irish hunks that look like Jeffrey Dean Morgan & Gerard Butler here on Ireland ... lived here for 10 years now. Wonder where they are hidding ????!!!!

After reading the book and thoroughly enjoying it I had high hopes for this film but was very disappointed! It is slow moving and far too long, it may have been better if it had been kept to and hour and a half. The acting is wooden and although it did make me cry in parts it was generally a very poor effort at reproducing what was a spellbinding and moving storyline.

Its no secret I'm a total weepy when watching emotional films. This one had all the promise of a 2 pack of tissues grading. But, disappointed on that level. Yes, I had a tear, but nowhere near as weepy as this really should have prompted. Boy friend enjoyed it tho.

I was really looking foward to watching this film however, after the first 30mins or so, I was not impressed. I did read the book (which is far superior to the film) and did of course compare the two. The film is nothing like the book (set in America - what is all that about??) and I was extremely disappointed. However, as other reviewers have commented, if you watch the film and have not read the book you will love it!!

This was a superb thoughtful well written book. Unfortunately the film didn't live up to expectations and did not follow the plot. The lead actor was appalling as he tried to emulate an Irish accent! Overall very disappointing and not nearly as moving or affective as the original book.

Yes, I did enjoy this film, however, having read the book only a week previously I found myself comparing and the book I enjoyed so much more. I waiting all through the film for things to happen that happened in the book, BUT it did not always happen. When you read the book you build up an impression of someone and when the movie comes out it does not live up to your expectations but if you have not read the book it's a good movie you will enjoy. But I would recommend reading the book ! sorry

I got this film more for my other half as it 'the best book she has ever read' It was ok but not my sort of film and my wife said it was not as good as the book so overall a bit of a let down.

This film looked like another dumb chick flick. I was presently surprised that it was not simply the case. Hilary Swank is certainly a great actress and she helped to carry the story off well. I felt both challenged and uplifted from watching this film. For very human being, we have to got to learn how to get over personal tragedy and get on with our lives properly. A thoroughly great film I would recommend watching it!

This is not the best cinematic experience you will ever have, but it is one of the best romantic films I've watched in ages. Be prepared though. I cried the whole way through. Really, from start to finish! I've read the book, which I also enjoyed and I think the film is just as good (possibly better?) but it is different, so if you absolutely loved the book you might be a little disappointed with some of the changes.

If you're thinking of hiring 'PS I Love You' on the basis of the fact that you've read and loved the book, then please don't. Rid your house of flatmates, partners, children etc, Sit down in your favourite chair with a nice big cup of tea and a packet of jaffa cakes and read the book again. This film has (as sadly so many hollywood bockbusters do) taken a moving, beatiful, heart wrenching tear jerker of a book and surgically removed its soul, replacing it with a moderately attractive capable cast acting out a waterdown sugar coated version of a wonderfully original story. The book moved me to real tears, the film left me feeling cheated. Hilary Swank as the lead was a mistake in itself. While a very competent actress, she seems out of her depth with the emotion of her character as as a result she never seems to really let go and give it her all - she goes through the motions of the film but you never really loose the feeling that she is just a uptight women who is truely uncomfortable with the part she has to play. P.S I love you? - Not this time, sorry.

After reading the book about 5 times a friend recommended the film..... I really wish I hadn't bothered - its not a patch on the book.

I loved thisfilm I cried from start to finish but still replayed my fave scenes after as i wasnt ready for it to end. I will definatley be reading the book now and cant wait to watch Gerard Butler in another film, maybe 300!!

Love this film, I might actually buy it. A man dies of brain tumour leaving his wife grief strichen, but he has organised a series of letters to be delivered to her in different ways helping her get on with her life and with a little help from her friends........well you'll just have to watch it and see. Amazing acting by both Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler (but his irish accent is not up to much). Totally recommend this to everyone, get your tissue's at the ready.

This film is loosely based on the book by the talented young author Celia Aherne and in my opinion every bit as enjoyabel. I laughed and cried in so many places and the music was brilliant. The casting of Gerard Butler as Gerry was inspired as he was exactly as I had imagined when I read the book, I defy any woman not to fall in love with him and with the beauty of Ireland.

i have read the book so i so much wanted to see the film. i was a bit disappointed as it wasn't what i thought it was going to be, don't get me wrong it was a great film but if i had to choose what was the best out of the book and the film, i would have to choose the book, it is worth watching though if you like girly films like me

I was so shocked when I watch this movie. It was my girlfriends choice of film and I thought it would be a sloppy chick flick. However, I found it very funny in places and also quite moving. But if you tell anyone that I enjoyed this chick flick I will have to kill you, lol

What can I say... I wasn't expecting this film to be anything great, I'd not read the book and just happened to catch the trailer for this it and thought it looked a little different, so I gave it a shot! And boy am I glad I did... this film has really touched my emotions in so many ways, one minute I was laughing & the next; sweeping a tear off my cheek. I would really reccomend this film to anyone! Everything I expected & more... I cried with happiness

OK I do like romantic comedy's and this one was fantastic, it had me laughing and crying. Jeffery Dean Morgan was amazing in it (love those eyes).

I didn't particularly enjoy this film. It had an okay storyline but found it a bit weird really. Plus Gerald Butler with a Irish accent was wierd.

It does what it says on the tin. Not a huge fan of Butler, the movie was quite predictable, but who cares. Having a 'Beaches' day? Add this to your watch list.

This film was a great romantic comedy with a good heart warming story. I loved every bit of this film especially the friendship between Holly and her firends. it had me laughing when you were ment to and it had you feeling loved up and sad in the right places. Thumbs up to a brilliant cast!

when my girlfriend suggested she wanted to see this, my first reaction was 'oh dear, a soppy love film, how great!' but i was wrong, i loved the film and i would recommend it to others. It has its funny moments, its sad moments and moments that make you go 'awww' with a smile on your face! The way the film is done just makes it even better! Now i never thought, i'd be sat here writing a review about a romantic film and saying its good, but it was!

Oh my god. Awful! Couldn't even finish it! I hate chicklit so am not sure why I rented this film. Lesson learned. Not my cup of tea!

I watched it over and over again and every time I cried just as much as the 1st! I love it and WILL be buying it asap!

This film is magical! It is as though someone reached into my head, withdrew all my essential elements for a great story and bundled them together in a wonderful, tearful, funny and utterly gorgeous film! I have never, and I mean never, cried so much, but they were tears of pure emotion - sometimes happy, sometimes heartbroken. The lovely Gerard Butler was a treat to watch, and you feel genuinely sorry that Hilary Swank has to go it alone. A chocolate box of a movie, and I can't wait to buy it and watch it all over again!

After reading the book i was really looking forward to watching this film, noticed from the deleted scenes that the best bits were not included in the film. To me this was a poor adaptation of the book written by cecelia ahern. This film was watchable but not on my top 10 list personally! I thought it was going to be alot better.

What a proper girlie film for a change. Thought it was funny and touching all the way through. Obviously not trying to be some great art-house movie, but for the tragic rom-com genre it was fantastic. Hilary Swank won't be getting her Oscar hat-trick with this, but I'm glad she did it. And Kathy Bates, genius as ever. Well worth settling down with a box of tissues and a box of Maltesers.

The male lead was mis cast and it was hard to empathise with the other characters. Entertaining, but could have been much sharper.

I actually bought this dvd to watch with hubby on valentines day and forgot to take itoff my list!! This is the best rom-com I have ever seen and hubby loved it too, it's believable and heartwarming, a must watch for any girlie and most guys.

Bridget Jones type romantic romp. Ok but ....

This is a bit of a chick flick but a nice little film nevertheless. The characters are engaging although the general theme of a dead husband leaving lots of instructions to his wife for how she can carry on with her life is a little bit far fetched and disconcerting. My advice, grab a box of tissues and a glass of wine and settle down with some girlfriends to watch this for what it is... a nice little film!

All i need to say is the Mrs liked it. Typical rom/com/drama. think i fell asleep before finding out if the girl got a new man by the end of the film. Not to bothered if i dont find out

I thought this was brilliant, clearly a chick flick but funny and heartbreaking at the same time. I sobbed throughout the entire book and sobbed through the film too, even my boyfriend had a lump in his throat. Although I felt drained at the end, anyone who has read the book will know this is going to be the case. Overall excellent and well recommended.

Gorgeous lead guy. How on earth did he put up with her behaviour. Really daft story. Get the tissues out. A real chick flick. Is it me or is the guy she ends up liking really creepy?

This film is both funny and sad, was an emotional rollercoster which you can easily relate to if you imagine losing your loved one...was so good i had to buy it n arrange a girle night in for a good old cry!!!

A decent enough twist on the old lost love weepie chick flick. Good acting performances from the cast with not too much schmaltz.

This film had all the makings of greatness, a great cast and a great book but (a large sigh here) twas not to be. The cast were what saved this film from being destroyed and not sent back to Love Film in peices with a snotty letter. If you have read the book then really steer clear. Important characters have been missed out like all the brothers and the father... no happy home for Holly and Harry Co. Jnr has been poorly cast as Declan (or poorly scripted). Why did the film have to be set in New York? What was wrong with Ireland? There were some nice bits in the film that would have been nice to see in the book but generally the film jumped about all over the place with parts not really being explained fully. The only reason I followed was because I had read the book.... obviously the jist the film is clear but the detail is just plain wrong and confusing - you will find yourself going '..er what was that all about' or 'what happened there' or ' where did that come from' The film is really just plain annoying and I am saddened because I was soooooo looking forward to watching it.

films are never as good as the book and this one is no different. Pay attention because it jumps around a little. However, despite the fact that it was not the huge weepsy I expected, it was still ok.

I rented this because I had read and really enjoyed the book. However, the film can only be described as 'loosely based' on the book as a lot of the story has been changed to fit in with an American audience. The book was set in Dublin where all the characters had grown up together. However the film was set in America and there was only one remaining Irish character, which was Gerry. It was a shame they chose to do this because it meant that huge chunks of the story had to be either changed or left out and I felt that this was a great loss to the story. However, having said that, it was still an enjoyable film with a good line-up of actors. It just could have been so much better - it would have made a refreshing change to have watched a film set in Dublin rather than having the usual American city back-drop.

This was an OK film, not as great as I had thought it would be based on the stars. The fake Irish accents got on by nerves a bit, and it was simplistic - was OK though.

I was not impressed with this film at all. As someone who has read and loved the book, this film completely re-wrote parts of the story. I was very disappointed, and not what I expected to see. The Character of Daniel was not at all who he was in the book, and Holly had a mum and dad, and they did not own a bar!!! If you love the book steer clear of this film as it will tarnish it completely.

Thought this would be a typical chick flick and I was only half right. The characters are so good that it turns out to be a really good drama with just the right ammount of laughs to go a long with it. I had planned this for a night in when my husband was away on business but we ended up watching it together and he loved it too. The guy who plays the dead husband was fab as was Hilary Swank who I am not normally a big fan of. Kathy Bates was great as the mum.

I read the book last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. I felt that the film didn't do the book justice; there weren't that many funny moments which I was expecting. A good love story with a lot of feeling but I just felt that it dragged on a bit and didn't keep be hooked.

We thought this film was very good a good girls film and a bit weepy, in fact very weepy. Although saying all that it's about living life and not regretting.

What a wonderful film . More of a girlie film. Thoroughly enjoyed it would recommend it to anyone.

I thought this film was a fab watch. Nearly cried all the way through it!! It picks up the main points from the book really well. I would highly recommend this movie to all my girlfriends!!

it was ok - hilary swank looks good - it was a bit schmaltzy but easy viewing - a great saturday afternoon film! watch out for hilary swank's clothes when she meets him - she hsa the colours of the rainbow about her!

A briliant book but a complete turkey of a film. I couldn't listen to the male lead's whiningly awful fake Irish/American accent without wanting to rip off my own arm just so I could have something to throw at him.

First of all I never write reviews here, but this film is so so bad that I have warn people. Do not waste your time on this trash. Poor acting comes top of the list. It is so cheesy it is the moon! No way can you empathise with the two dimensional main character. What could we have done with all the money that was wasted, totally wasted, on the making of this bilge.

Such a feel good film. Making you want to make more of your own life. And how some who loves you so much and continue to love you forever. Really great!

Read the book which was brilliant and felt a tad let down by the film, but it was still good. Definately not for those whose are depressed, but worth a watch with a big bowl of icecream, glass of wine and a tissue or two. One for the girls!

I had read the book prior to the seeing film at the cinema and yes, I was slightly disappointed by the film adaptation. Although I thoroughly enjoyed it and have watched the DVD several times since. Having read the book I also cried from the moment the film started, but also laughed a lot too. I would reccommend it to anyone.

P.S. I love you is a lovely piece but girly, so if you not girly its not worth watching.

I am glad i read the book first as the film would have ruined it for me. The film did not do justice to the book and was a little disappointing. if you don't do books then watch the film. if books are your thing give it a miss.

Apparently based on a good well written book the direct opposite of the film. It seemed to have no heart either as a film or any spark generated by the actors. It struck me that the actors knew that this was poorly directed and just went through the motions of being before the camera.

This is a good film but it's not as good as the book. They have changed the story and the two main characters relationship isn't as strong as it was in the book

... And if you're about to watch the film, READ THE BOOK! I loved the book, and couldn't put it down. The upseting parts REALLY made you cry, and the funny wit of the Irish made you LAUGH. But this was just cringeworthy at best. They changed the story almost completely, whilst trying to shove it into an hour and a half. Because of this, they removed all soul from the best characters, got rid of others, and added some pointless ones that didnt work!! Also the best scenes were cut... What happened to the club night when they were being chased? Where was the whole love story with the ex? And Where was her brother that filmed them all and got an award? (Which ironically I doubt this ever had) All in all a chick flick without any soul. Extremely disappointing and not what I was expecting. If you have seen this film and hated it, please pick up the book as it is amazing. Dont let a cruddy-should-have-gone-straight-to-TV Film ruin it for you. If you have read the book and still want to watch the film, you will be disappointed. Dont say I didnt warn you...

I rented this film, as, some others did, based on reading the book, and I'm afraid I was disappointed. The film has been Americanised, some parts were skipped over, and the basic premise of the film was totally shifted. If you haven't read the book, the focus is on Gerry's letters each month, but it just seemed like a minor plotline. Some parts were unbelievable (the Billy storyline for example), and some just felt like they were added for the 'Hollywood' factor. As a standalone movie, it would probably score a three, as some parts were good, but as a 'based on a book' movie, it's only a 2 from me, I'm afraid.

this film was way to predictable and the irish accents were appalling, this put me off the film right from the start.

What a wonderful film - went out and brought it so that I can watch it whenever I want. Jeffrey Dean Morgan is a peach. Loved the comedy mixed in with the emotive feelings of despair from Hilary Swank. Good film for a rainy afternoon with a bed picnic

I've never cried so much watching a film, I felt awful....certainly made me appreciate my lovely boyfrind more though.

On the whole i did enjoy this film mainly because i thought the leading man was 'a bit of a dish' and Hilary Swank's performance was good enough to make me sympathise with her character so i was moved in parts but it lost my attention in other parts. On the whole would recommend this as light-hearted entertainment.

Now this is a must for all you girls! I loved this film, probably helped with the scrummy leading male, but seriously though this was a real feel good movie. It was so good I had to watch it twice!! So don't delay, add this to your rental list it's a must!

I did really enjoy this film. I made the mistake of reading the book before watching this film. Don't do it!! There have been some changes from the book and I always find myself a little dissapointed in films when I do read the book first.

This film thoroughly deserves a solid 4/5 star rating. For those of us who have read the original book it is nothing alike. The lead character Holly has no father and as for brothers_ these do not exist. Also the setting has been Americanised rather than kept Irish (although this does feature in the screenplay). It is hard for any director to convert 500 + pages of any book into a few enjoyable hours, but I feel this is pulled off. The story is compelling and believable and tugs at all of the hearts strings. You can feel tha pain and emotion Holly goes through throughout her journey in life. The missing components however does not hinder the perforamces of either Gerard or Hilary and for the romantics out their, this surely makes for a good girly night in. From Blue. xx

This film wasnt as good as I expected it to be. The irish accents were awful and the comedy moments were pretty lame. It started off quite slow but did improve about half way through. Good idea for a storlyine and did make me cry - twice ! Very much a chick flick

Watched this with my other half and made me realise that you need to make the most of the ones you love before it is too late. Very funny and heart warming film

Well, what can I say? The film had some good scenery, when shot in Ireland. Er... That waqs about it. Even by chick-flick standards this was sickly, badly acted (Hilary Swank was the best of a bad bunch, Gerard Butler was painful). Butler's faux-Irish American twang was the most irritating thing of the film - apart from a paper-thin plot and shallow acting, of course. Difficult to find good points, even the girlfriend (who cries at adverts) was dry throughout, even SHE said it was poor. My advice - try elsewhere.

after the obvious hesitance at a title that suggested light chick flick romanic comedy - doubtless a good one given the stella cast - I was completely enchanted by this superbly crafted love story and pro man film. Anyone, no matter what sexual preference, who has ever been in love - will totally get this story - laugh, cry, and remember all the crazy emotions and moods that this utterly instinctive human passion can liberate. Excellent Acting right across the cast - from the singing telegram lepricorn to the central characters - Lisa Kudrow, as always is worth the ticket price alone - Kathy Bates showing yet another creation from her gallery of charming women - what a craft she has. Swank and Butler gave us a real couple with all the flaws and truth of loving someone. And essentially a great script. Lovethisfilm.

I was dissappointed with this. Very predictable and bordering on annoying!

Swank is excellent in this movie she proves she can do comedy and serious at the same time. its heartwarming. and you really feel for her charector in this movie. you always hope the best for her and things do come her way in all odd places, making it a fun movie. featuring plenty of flashbacks.

Having read the book i was expecting good things from this film. I was also looking forward to seeing Lisa Kudrow in a film role. However, this film was disappointing. The main characters are perhaps not introduced in the best way and so you don't really get to build up the empathy with them that you do in the book. It seems to drift along, without a focused script and it doesn't really hold the attention until the final 3rd. One for the girls definitely. Men will be as bored as my other half was when watching it i'm afraid.

If you want a girlie film to watch with a glass of wine and chocolate then this is for you. It entertained and did what it set out to do

I read the book about a year ago and thoroughly enjoyed it and was not disappointed with the film! I thought it was great. It is a real chick flick and you will definitely need the tissues at hand. I would highly recommend it.

Having read the book I was a little disappointed as it does miss out a very big chunk at the beginning which kind of sets the context but a very good film, made me cry like a baby lol. Although think a lot of that was becuase I knew the story and the ending. Recommend it for anyone to watch but if you have read the book be warned it isn't anywhere near as good !

Well, I am not a slushy film girl, but this did have me tears a couple of times. Moreso thinking of how I would feel in this situation. But the journey that follows for this widow, is both funny, wistful and touching. Some very funny moments, and def worth watching. Soundtrack is fantastic!

I read the book first before watching the film and I am glad i did, the book is very emotional and detailed. When watching the film i was slightly disappointed as the book was more touching. I am still giving this a 4 star rating because if i was to have watched the film first i wouldn't have anything to compare it with.

Well, I hate to admit it...but I really liked this film! It was extremely funny, however the humour was overshadowed at times by the shear depressing nature of the plot...dead husband writes to widow from beyond the grave etc. Good acting all round but for me Kathy Bates steals the show.

This is not a charming love film at all but a rather annoying, over sentimental story that is just boring. This film had me pressing fast forward far too often. Hilary swank will only harm her career with these kind of films.

Even though when I sat down to watch this film I realised I had read the book and therefore pretty much new how it went I still cried through out. Good weepy.

If you haven't read the book, and you like a good romantic tear jerker, you'll probably like this. However, I'd already read the book and absolutely loved it, and was hugely disappointed by the film. They change far too many details and the result leaves you wondering why they bothered! They should've stuck with the original details and they would've had a wonderful film. Still enjoyable and worth watching, but don't expect anything like the book.

I was expecting a comedy, but i cried nearly the whole way through this film! It was very touching, and managed a couple of laughs in between the tears. A must see for the ladies - get rid of your men though as it is so hard to look sexy when crying!

having read the book a true chick lit was so looking forward to the film got settled down with anticipation and what a true disappointment.It follows a faint thread of the book then sets to its own idea.Does not work at all.Acting was very poor and not a great cast.What with a bad irish accent running throughout and generally lame links to the book they truley tried to cash this one in for the cash but left the audience empty.If you read the book dont bother if you havent then you may truly enjoy it.On the plus side it does show some beautiful contryside!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

p.s i love you is a girls film and if your in the mood for crying this is the film for u. it starts of great but towards the end the film kind of goes crazy and is very unpredictable. i also think it was trying to hard to make some of the jokes funny. i marked it 3 out of five because it wasn't my cuppa tea

excellent a really girlie film

Definately a what is known as a 'chickflick', but in saying that it was a thoughtful one . Had some very good moments in it , Hilary Swank is supported by a good cast. the movie is not a wishy washy one but makes for great watching on an afternoon when you have nothing to do do except relax and watch a movie.

After so much hype over this film and the number of stars it has received I was very disappointed with it. I found the story line a bit slow to be honest, and the acting wasn't convincing at all. It's not a film I would recommend!

Quite an easy watch, humorous in parts but not too exciting! Ok to sit down with a bag of popcorn if you've nothing better to do.

Loved it - gorgeous guys and one of them could also act!! Gerard Butler - very sexy, where have you been hiding?!! And what a voice! Jeffrey Dean Morgan could sing and had a lovely smile but that Irish accent - ouch... and acting not convincing (sorry). Story was touching and Hilary Swank believable. They could have left out Harry Conick Junior's part and I'd have still loved the film - quirky but forgettable.

I originally read the book when it first came out and loved it. It's even better on film, a real tear-jerker and Hilary Swank plays the part of the young widow brilliantly.

Lovely film, but no good if your too emotional. You need shares in a tissue company. Some lovely light spots and really quite funny in places.

A proper chick flick- I laughed and cried. Loved it.

An amazing soppy, goey love story in which Hilary swank acts in a very mature role. It has a few comical scenes to keep it lighthearted and best of all an unpredicatble ending which you have to wait for with baited breath!

Good solid film, with a smart turn from Gerald Butler as the deceased boyfriend, an enjoyable comedy which will remain with you once you have seen it.

Did not like this film at all the story was good to think that after he had died he was leaving notes for his wife to help her find a new lover but jumped around to much from the past to the present , Not my cup of tea but you might like it !!!

I loved the book and high hopes for the film...I wasn't disapointed! Even though the two vary slightly, the basic story is obviously still there but the film, the actors and the fabulous soundtrack made for me....oh, and a jumbo box of tissues and a bar of chocolate helped!

I had read the book and was very sceptical about seeing the movie. The book captured the emotion, sadness, the intense desire to have her husband back to be able to capture all those stolen moments we sometimes forget. I am delighted to say that I felt all of these things in the movie! This is totally one for the girls, I was crying at various points throughout this entire movie which I am sure is something your husband/boyfriend/partner will not want to be subjected to! This is a must see Sunday afternoon, tissue and chocolates movie

I haven't read the book and so didn't realise the film plot wasn't very close to that of the book. If I had I probably would not have enjoyed it as much as I did. It's a weepy, emotional film with lots of funny moments and quite n uncliched ending. Liked it a lot.

Great film. I have seen this twice now, once at the pictures where i came out with red eyes and once at home. It is such a gripping film and very emotional so have the hankies ready....... could do with a follow up.

Awful, awful, awful. The Irish accents are terrible, the acting is terrible, the script is terrible and I'd bet my bottom dollar Hillary Swank doesn't put this film on her resume!

If ever there was a film to watch with the girls or on a rainy sunday afternoon tucked up with popcorn and chocolate this was it. Be prepared to shed some tears. You don't need to think, just lay back and enjoy!

P.S - Don't bother. Even my wife who loves the book thought this was a poor effort. According to her the film and book had very little in common. For me the plot was thin, predictable, the characters under developed and the Irish accent of Gerry was the worst I have ever heard.

This film is a real must for those who love a good love story! Wasn't dissapointed by the film itself, only by the quality of the copy of the film which decided to freeze half way through!

Me and my boyfriend both thought this film was BRILLIANT! I was a bit unsure if it would be morbid (after reading the book). But it wasnt. If you dont cry you have a heart of stone and it will leave you feeling a little pensive. But brilliantly deals with the issue of losing a partner. Made me laugh and is the first film i have seen with Lisa Kudrow in it, where i enjoyed her performance and didnt just think pheobe every time she comes on screen!

Definitely one for the girls.....I really liked it but get out the tissue box.

as i had already read the book i found the film a bit disappointing to be honest, as a lot of it was completely different, however the film in itself was not bad and was quite sad at times!

I absolutely fell in love with this film, its funny, sad, dramatic its got it all and the story was superb. Gerard Butler was fantastic and so was Hilary Swank!!! I loved that it was part shot in Ireland too as i like to see films set closer to home. I will now be purchasing this film!!!! Heehehehehehe You must see it its great!!!!! xxxxxxxxxxx

I really enjoyed this film. Its a really sweet storyline where its easy to put yourself in her shoes. It's one of the saddest films iv seen, i rarely cry in films but this one bad me sob! ha. I would deffinately recommend this film to everyone who likes a good chick flick. It's an ideal film to watch with your friends or your mum.

Great Film, tearjerker but brill, my daughter and i loved it but not my husbands taste he is into more butch films more the pity, we would watch this film again.

When I looked at some of the other reviews I was really expecting this film to be no good. I was pleasantly surprised and found it a perfect film to watch with a good box of chocs. It's not one for the men though I don't think. I have not read the book though so maybe that's why I liked it. I may get the book now and see how they compare. So, if you fancy an easy to watch film that makes you laugh and cry then rent this one.

I'm not ususally a fan of soppy films but I did love this one. Only irritation was the dodgy irish accents! Feel good movie.

This film was truly awful, the Irish accents laughable and the entire plot an unbelievable overdose of sentimental schmaltz of the worst kind. I can watch GOOD schmaltzy movies but this was BAAAD! Only Harry Connick Jnr provided a bit of light relief, but that's because I fancy him. I can't believe the male lead was the same guy out of '300' - he was crap in this, and so was Hilary Swank.

If you love someone, this film will defiently make you cry. Slow to begin with, then gets into the story line. I was an emotional wreck all night, although im sure everyone is different. Very funny towards the end. If you like the film I would advise reading the book. It is a bit better than the film, which is why i maybe expected to much from it. The book makes you laugh and cry the whole way through without cutting out the important bits!

definatley a chick flick

I once read that on an average day, more than 40 films are in the process of being made in New York. Well, this was one of them. I have a theory too that almost every film made in New York includes Central Park at some stage. I was not disappointed. It must keep the budget low for the film studio! As for the film itself, the concept behind it - letters from a dead man to his widow – was very clever. It did however take a long time to get going, and this was almost enough to make me abandon watching it, though I kept going in the hope that it would take off eventually, which it did. I love countryside more than inner-cities, and was rewarded when the plot took us to some beautiful Irish landscapes. The film will be a tear-jerker for anyone who has been bereaved from one whom they love dearly. There is also quite a bit of comic relief to lighten the story.

I didn't watch it.........but my Mum found it really enjoyable..........even shed a few tears apparently........

Despite the new twist this film was for the most part something we've all seen many times before. Still made me smile, if not laugh out loud.

It starts really badly and the acting is pretty bad. Plus Jerry's Irish accent is terrible. However, I persevered and got more into it as it went along. It's cheesy and very predictable but mildly entertaining I suppose. Don't go out of your way to watch it!

This is an excellent film with Kevin Costner at his best and Ashton Kutcher plays a good part. Very well filmed with some excellent scenes and a good story to it, with an unfortunate sad ending. l liked it so much I watched it twice!

I found this film infuriatingly dull. Gerald Butler was slimy and creepy and Harry Connick Jnr drippy. The only saving grace are the main character's two friends, though i'm beginning to wonder if Lisa Kudrow can play anything other than Phoebe!

Sometimes cheesey and poor acted but on the whole not bad, a kind of happy tear jerker if there's such as thing!!

I don't know where this film went wrong. I absolutely love a good chick flick, and this promised to be a great one! We had the hunky Gerard Butler, the funny/sad storyline, some great actresses, but for some reason, while this should have been a humorous weepy, it just lacked something. The comedy bits weren't delivered with the right amount of finesse, the parts where you should have been reaching for the Kleenex didn't tug your heart strings quite as powerful as it could have, and it just kept falling short of the mark. However, I have heard that the book on which this film was based, is a lot better than the film, and because I do like the overall storyline of this film, I think I shall go read that instead.

I saw this film in the cinema with a good friend of mine, but I really wanted to go with my fiance' but he thought, 'chick flick? no way!' So when it came out on DVD I almost forced him to see it! And his reaction? 'That was pretty good, I liked it!' He even got teary-eyed at one point! To say I love this film would be an understatment! It is a funny, heartwarming simple story of how a young woman tries to get over losing her husband. You're thinking, how could that be funny? Well somehow it is. I love the first 5 minutes of the film which shows Gerry and Holly arguing before making up. I felt it was a genius way of letting us understand their relatonship before he died. I cried many times each time I watched it. There is lots of handsome men to look at, but also, Hilary Swank looks great! Totally recommend this...enjoy it!

Feeling good movie.

I haven't read the book, so I thought I might like this one. And I have to admit I wanted to see it because Gerard Butler is in it. Well, that wasn't enough ... Butler is his charming, sexy self - as usual. Hilary Swank is so so. I am not sure if it is her or her character but I could never warm to her/her character. Her best moment is when she is the grieving widow singing along to Judy Garland. The film is never really dramatic or really romantic. There are funny moments but only here and there. All in all it is very slow moving. We had a girlie night in with wine and chocolates. It entertained but never really gripped us.

Great film, even my hubby cried.

Straight forward storyline although it flicks back and forth in time. Light hearted but close to the inevitable....loosing a loved one and trying to find a way of living with it.

I watched this film on a sunny day with the curtains drawn and cried my eyes out - sounds miserable but its actually a great film. I had read the book prior which was also fantastic, but very different. I would recommend this film to most girls - it seems unlikely to me that many boys will like it however.

I had to fast forward to the end of the film, I got that bored! Schmultz

I HAVE READ THE BOOK AND THE FILM DIDNT DO THE BOOK JUSTICE. ALTHOUGH I THINK HILARY SWANK AND GERARD BUTLER ARE BOTH GOOD ACTORS, I DIDNT THINK GERARD BUTLER MADE HIS CHARACTER BELIEVABLE.

i brilliant feel good film that made me realise how lucky i am

We loved this chick flick! Had us crying from the word go! Gorgeous male leads really made the film for us. To be enjoyed with a tub of ice cream and some girlfriends. If only we could find someone like the men in this film!

The film was good but if you have read the book, the film is not a patch on it. Still managed to spring a tear though.

Didn't really enjoy this very much. It was OK for a girlie chick flick, box of tissues, but I won't watch it again. I think it was too unrealistic, but the ending was good. Made me smile and cry, but I did let the film run when I needed to leave the room...

Just loved it. I could have watched it over and over again. The film was very similar to the book.

WOW, what a sad film, i cried from start to finish. The film was fantastic and showed true love in the right colour. Deffo Chick Flick, one to watch with the girls but be warned you will be ringing your other half.

My wife and I turned off after 30 dreadful minutes. It should have been ten but percerveered because of cast. But everyone was poor, writing dreadful.......

I am a sucker for Rom Coms and I thought this was one. It wasn't. Very sad in parts. It handles the theme of grief of letting go. I watched thru till the end, thought it was well done and Swank excellent but it left me feeling sad.

Good adaptation, bit of a weepy but definately worth a watch!

This could have been a really cheesy, sentimental, mawkish film - which to be honest I would have hated. But luckily it's saved by a great sense of humour that runs throughout the film. There are some genuine laugh out loud moments and some touching moments as well. On a few occasions, scenes went on a little too long, or seemed somehow disconnected to the rest of the film, and at times believability was stretched to breaking point. But for the most part the story flowed well and we couldn't wait to see what happened next.

What a depressing, boring, pointless movie!

I was told it’s a tear-jerker, so prepared myself….armed with ice-cream and tissues. However as the ice-cream started to melt I unfortunately didn’t so the tissues weren’t required. Don’t get me wrong a pleasant film, easy viewing with a general warm feeling throughout, and I laughed a little which is always good.

I wasn't sure what I'd be getting with this film and, to be honest, the fake Irish accents drove me nuts - but if you're in the mood for a real old-fashioned weepy, then this is it! I'm not easily driven to tears, but the whole ethos of this film had me there almost throughout - except when I was laughing! If you're in the mood, then this is the movie for you!

I loved the book and have read this many times. However I was very disappointed with the film. Gerard Butler and Harry Connik Jnr were good however the resty of the cast fell flat. And where huge chunks of the book were missed out you could not get involved with the tragic and bittersweet love story that the book was. So if you love the book do not rent this.

Absolutely awful, rented it as had read the book and like Gerard Butler, but the acting from him and everybody else was stilted and forced - probably because of the terrible script they had to try and squeeze some realism out of. The film wasnt a patch on the book - buy the book and dont bother with this.

and lots of people have told me the book is better (yet to read). The idea behind the book/film is sound but in the film the actors used (except for Butler) are very weak or for some strange reason act weakly. Whatever the idea is sound the fiilm is ok at best!!

I'm not really a fan of films that make me cry...it was good but unless you enjoy feeling sad I wouldn't recommend it. (But I am pregnant so it might just be me!)

It was long-winded, a bit boring and overly sentimental. There were bits that could have been funny but the comedy timing and editing was poor.

I thought this film was an enjoyable, easy watchable movie, great if you want something thats easy to watch. But it is not going to be the best film you ever see. It is was not a film that I would make an effot to watch again.

Rented this little baby and have watched it 3 times...once alone (cried) second with hubby (he was reluctant to watch a chick flick - and liked it alot) and lastly with my 9 year old (who cried and pretended she had a cold). You know there are some films that have scenes that you just want to watch over and over again...this film had two for me; I wanted to extract the scenes and take the film down a whole new route. I won't tell you what, watch it and see. I'll give you a clue: the scarey Irish dog. Having just read other people's reviews, I will now read the book and hopefully get even more out of this lovely little story

Excellent film, cried (actually sobbed) most of the way through, fantastic love story.

I watched this film on a plane and I found it really moving. The acting is really good and it will have you in tears! If you're looking for an action packed plot then this is probably not for you but if you are looking for a girly night in with a tub of ice-cream then i'd thoroughly recommend!

rubbish rubbish rubbish- Read the book far more worth the money!!

I had not read the book before seeing this film so cannot comment on accuracy. I found the film frustrating on several levels. It was entertaining however I felt that the Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler relationship was not believable. I also had real moral issues around the story line which I felt was unfair if not selfish of the husband. I also found Gerard Butler irritating playing the Irish lepracorn. I know GB can provide good, strong performances such as in Dear Frank however he appears uncomfortable with the rom com role; it is almost that he is trying too hard. Editing of scenes was awkward if not disjointed and the Irish connection seemed forced and over played. However I understand that the original story was based completely in Ireland pity this was not retained. If re-edited there could be a good film in there!

This film was extraordinary, Extraordinarily boring. What was Hilary Swank thinking when she signed up for this film? 'I haven't got any more room for any more Oscars, so I'll do some soppy tearjerker.' Cecelia Ahern's book was awful, it was a cheesy, badly written overlong chicklit novel which Hollywood thought would make a great tearjerker movie. The problem is the script is as weak and empty as the book. There is no depth to the characters. Like the book the film should have been shorter or filled with more substance, maybe a longer back story instead of 10 minutes of Gerry and Holly fighting over nothing, then making up, then Gerry singing like a jack a**. Is Gerald Butler that desperate for work? What was with the ridiculous Irish accent, was there no Irish actors available? All the karaoke singing drove me mad and i had to fast forward a few too many times. I hope they do a better job of adapting Ceceila Ahern's other books because although her writing is awful and amateur her ideas are fantastic. The best thing about the movie was Lisa Kudrow who was funny in parts. If you want to watch a real tearjerker/'comedy' rent 'The Bucket list' or 'Catch and release'.

This was a great movie. I dont really love romance movies and got this one for my mom but I watched it and luved it. I cried from start to finish, not cause it was sad all the time but just had so much emotion to it. You like romance.......if you are emotional and like a cry this is the film to go for.

Enjoyed this film and played safe with some hankies at hand.

I thought this was a really good film. Quite sad as a member in my family died of a Brain Tumour too and I recal my Mum saying when my sister watched it at the cinema at specific parts she burst into tears. I guess its all part of the healing purpose. Still a very good film warm hearted and nice but sad. :-)

I have read the book for this twice now and I was looking forward to the film. I am Irish and love the way that this film has brought an old favourite Irish song back into the charts in Ireland. I liked the film but found it a little cheesy and a bit fake. THe Irish accents were not very good and and at times I was cringing watching it. All round an ok DVD, to be watched with girls on a girly night in!!

Admitedly I decided to watch this after weeks of nagging by the girlfreind that we 'had to see it'. An absolute bore for us red blooded males but I can see why it would appeal to the other half. However if that other half is feeling broody avoid at all costs or else you may find yourself in for some more pestering.

Just couldnt keep my eyes opened... The dead husband is actully quite sexy but the storyline is really poor and completely lacks of substance

This fim was absolutely brilliant - i started crying at the start and didnt finish til the end - but dont let that put you off!! The love between the 2 people is amazing - the thought that goes into the preparation is mind blowing and the guys are pretty cute to. And it is not just a girly film - i would definetly buy this dvd at full cost as it is worth every penny

What a lovely film!! Think it's one for us girls! I forgot how many time i nearly cried, this film is a tearjerker!!! Good story line and great acting you got to watch it!!!

Much as 'fickers' has already stated, I could not believe that the opening scene before the credits even rolled consisted of 10 minutes of trivial banter-type excuse for an 'argument'. Finally the opening credits began - the only bit I enjoyed. I might have enjoyed the closing credits even more if I'd have lasted more than 23 minutes before switching it off (at the request of my wife!) and posting it straight back. The premise of the plot had/has great potential and had all the potential ingredients for a great, soppy & weepy night in curled up on the couch with my wife and a box of chocs (Yep, blokes can enjoy such movies AND be straight!). Instead, we were indeed weeping but only due to the hilarious efforts at the Irish accent and the only things curling were our toes! There was absolutely nothing that I could find redeeming about this movie. I suppose I could be positive and say at least the lead 'Oirish' character croaked (completely unnanounced) within the first 10 minutes but unfortunately he kept coming back from the grave via his ansaphone, letters, tapes etc. Just wish I'd had a crucifix/silver bullet/sharpened stake to put the poor guy out of his obvious pain at trying to maintain his Irish pretence! Truly dire and I feel cheated out of 23 minutes of my life!

i got this for my wife but we all ended up watching it and its not a bad film but it is i would say a good sunday afternoon film but we liked it and there is a story to it and it does make you think that life is to short and life does carry on as this film tells you about

Not as sad as I thought, although I felt a pull on the heart strings during a couple of moments throughout, abit more comedy than i would of liked. Does make you want to marry a Irishman though :-) I like the actress's character in it as she wasn't perfect, the film has a pleasant twist at the end, and isn't too obvious. Good all round film that could be watched as a couple.

I have read the book and was shocked to find the film set in New York with American actors and dreadful Irish accents. It just doesn't capture the romance and fun of the book at all

A film about dealing with death. Done in a typical American Hollywood style. Make sure you have the tissues at hand.

Gradually improves following a slow start to become quite an endearing film.

Oh I loved this movie - all I can say is that I cried from beginning to end! A great slushy movie, very moving.

Me and my girl both found this film a bit of a standard watch and if you have read the book then please be prepared for some big changes from the book, that I wouldn't say help this film. Overall a standard watch to kill a few hours.

I read the book and loved every minute of it. It was so well written and the storyline was amazing. I had looked forward to the film so much and was truely disappointed to find that they had completely re-written it. The characters were different, the location was different, they only kept the bare bones of the original story. To top it off they chose a Scottish actor to play the lead role of Gerry (who is Irish)- his attempt at an Irish accent was excruciating, worse than Tom Cruise in Far & Away!!! With so many talented young Irish actors out there, why they couldn't have chosen one of them I don't know........

I cried and laughed the whole way through this movie - its the perfect chick flick and even my husband admitted to enjoying it which is a real break-through!

if you like your actresses to look like a lollipop stick then this one may be for you. Hiliary Swank obviously slimmed down for this role after beefing up for Million Dollar Baby and looking so fit and healthy for that role. This film is a bit predictable but is well acted and sports James Marsters (Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer). It's a tear jerker and some of the irish roles are sterotypical of what the US thinks of Ireland but having said all that it's entertaining.

This film annoyed me from the very beginning because Gerard Butler's Irish accent was awful. Did the character really need to be Irish except for to fit the American stereotype of cute but unreliable. Maybe they didn't think he could pull that off as a Scottish character as they're normally labelled alcoholic wife beaters - to that I say, cast an Irishman, or at least someone who can do a decent accent. I thought when he died I was spared but then he narrated the entire film! That rather early irritation aside, the film was well acted and had some suspense and interest but I really found it hard to believe that Hilary Swank's mother, sister and best friend left her alone for weeks after her husband died, just leaving half-hearted 'we haven't heard from you' messages on her answer machine. Surely any decent parent, sibling or friend would have stayed over with her for a few days at least after the funeral and at the very least gone round to visit when they hadn't heard from her.

Tears, Laughter, Love & Sex what more could a film have. Great film I really enjoyed it very much. The story line was just perfect.

Loved it. Slowish plot if you like fast paced movies, but very good. I even cried which I never do! Very touching. Girlie flick. Not really one for the lads (unless the sensitive type!!), maybe watch it in secret.....

Having read the book I was very excited to see the film but unfortunately it was nothing like the original story! The leading character Holly (Hilary Swank) was horrible and did not allow you to feel anything but contempt for her. Of course Gerard Butler was gorgeous and very good but it was so disappointing. Perhaps if you haven't read the book you will enjoy the film but the two are so far removed from each other it doesn't work for me.

Disappointing in comparison to the book. In the book it was all Irish and no Americans. Why did it have to be Americanised.

Liked this but could not believe how a guy went from one to another completely different woman! Not believable but preffered Eva to any of the characters who got a bit on my nerves!

OK kind of film, bit emotionally draining and not as good as the book. Get your tissues ready.

A wonderfully good feel good girly film

I'm with other reviewers here. A pleasant enough movie but lost a lot in the translation to the Hollywood screen. It is sad that the Hollywood investors can't just leave a great plot alone and trust that it will work. I'm guessing that if you've not read the book then this would be a reasonably pleaseant 'chick flick' evening of entertainment.

Really enjoyed this film although I cried most the way through it! Def a girly film!

Wonderful acting, varied scenery and some laugh-out-loud moments made this ridiculously sad film thoroughly enjoyable. Although a bit sappy at times, I found the romance between Holly and Gerry quite realistic and believable and managed to relate to them with ease. Having not read the book beforehand, I wasn't sure what to expect but would describe this film as a desperately sad romantic comedy in which lessons are learnt and grudges dispersed. My only criticism would be that no man would be THAT organised to administer a series of letters and surprises to be overseen in the event of his death! Really good Sunday afternoon film for the girls - makes you value your other half and realise how important it is never to let the sun set on an argument.

I had been looking forward to this one, loving as I do slushy romantic comedies. I had read the book and thought it was OK but not so great it couldn't be improved on the big screen. It was really disappointing; cheesy, tacky, I couldn't even finish watching it. It could have been made really beautifully, the idea of Gerry keeping his wife company after his death and keeping making her laugh is really sweet. It definitely does not come off that way in this film. NOT RECOMMENDED!

I have already read the book to this so I sat down to watch this thinking it would be like the book....refreshingly it had the same idea as the book but was very diferent, it was set in completely different countries for a start. I really enjoyed this film it made me laugh and cry (a lot. I would highly recommend this film to anyone who loves a good weepy chick flick.

Don't watch this film if you have read the book. Very disappointing. In the book it's set in dublin near the coast not in america. I was so excited to get this film aswell, thought i'd want to watch it over and over but instead took me 3 days to watch it as i kept falling asleep.

Wow, what an amazing film. I just loved it so much. There are parts where you have to say, 'Hmm, what is going on?' but your answered quickly and left to enjoy the most wonderful film, with the best actors and sexy men. My Husband loved it too as we laughed together and I had a tear or two as well. You will love this film I am sure of it!

A little slow and confusing to start off with and then it turned into a lovely, warm romance with a happy ending.

Good Sunday evening film when nothing is on the box. I shed a few tears but nothing like The Notebook, which was much better film all together. This was still a heart warming film. This is a 'nice' film; worth a watch if you like a not too slushy romantic film.

Set out as a kind of comedy but it Not, if you know what I mean.. A real bore of a film, probably one of the worst I have ever seen.

Not sure what this film wanted to be. I had been looking forward to watching this film since a friend told me how great it was and was on a par with 'The Notebook' which I loved. However, when I watched this film I could not find any sympathy with any of the characters and thought it was really tasteless and cheesy at times. Everytime I felt myself getting drawn into the movie I was pushed back out again by bad jokes and cliché acting for example: being sick in the middle of a conversation when drunk. I was really disappointed with this film which seemed to be scared to takcle the issue of the film and disguise what it really should have been about. This film had the potential to be amazing which is why it is so frustrating when it completely has missed the point.

i asked many people about this film, and few said they watched the first few mins then gave up. warning as this is a mistake, as it is a great film, i love it. it is however one for the girls. i cant say too much without giving the story away, as i think you should experience this for yourself. please dont pass up.

I loved this film so much and cried from start to finish. My partner even enjoyed it and had a tear or two. I do think its a real chick flick and should be watched with a big box of tissues as its very sad from the start but really lovely. I dont have anything bad to say about this movie at all so would highly recommend you rent it.

i was in doubt of watching this film to start as i have read the book and i found the book to be amazing. the fiilm its self was tearjerking good and it helped to have someone easy on the eyes to watch as gerard butler, but i have to say that i found that it did not keep in with the book but all in all a good film to watch on a cold winter night with a box of chocs

A beautiful love story and beautifully acted and depicted through film. All the characters are very strong in this film and that also includes the locations.

I was happily surprised with this film, as I did not expect too much. But it had a feel good factor despite the death of one important character. Worth watching.

This is a sad and lonely tale, there was humour in it but it was mostly lost in the sadness of it all.

the mrs had read the book and said it was gonna be a proper girly flic so i decided id go online while she watched but i ended up on the sofa watchin as well,really enjoyed it.

This film was disappointing and rather boring. Nothing like the book,which was great. The film lacked empathy and emotion. Don't bother wasting your time and money on it.

All I can say is please do not watch this as it might encourage people to make more films as dire as this.

Disappointing, as the book is one of my all time favourites! It's all backward as it's meant to be 'set' in Ireland etc. None the less, a reasonable film in it's own right, but the book far out shines it's adaptation.

A funny, lighthearted story of overcoming loss and being brave enough to love again. Although perhaps a girly movie the more sensitive guy would enjoy this movie, not really a tear jerker.

great film worth renting

this is an amazlying well written movie. it pulls at your heart strings great story about love and how someone copes when the love of there life dies. It made me cry but was very moving.

I had heard really good reviews about the film but was disappointed as it wasnt all that I had imagined. Would be better to watch it without knowing anything about it.

very funny in places especially the karaoke scene.... couldnt stop laughing as i could picture myself doing the same thing... heartbreaking but not as weepy as the notebook. Def worth a watch though

A bit slow for the guys but had some very funny parts and had my girlfriend in tears from begining till end. I enjoyed it and for once it was not a bad girly flick at all :)

After I watched this film, I felt being lifted of the ground into another world, I couldn't stop the tears through out the film although I don't cry much. Highly recommended to people who like romantic films otherwise just don't watch it and rate it low afterwards. It’s a personal opinion after all.

Good film, great for a girlie night in. Make sure you have a box of kleenex to hand cause it will make you cry from the start. But I strongly suggest you read the book, 100 times better & a very good read.

Some atrocious Irish accents from American actors. Unfortnately as I've read the book first I was very disappointed but still couldn't stop crying throughout the whole thing!! Tear jerker tastic!!

My daughter (13 ) loved this - she watched it twice. Lightweight, funny, pleasant movie. Sometimes a bit too schmaltzy for me, but no one ever said it was meant to be an intellectual challenge!

This is a great chick flick.

If yov'e read the book, then the film is crap. Otherwise it is just OK. Wrong film for Hilary Swank as well. Nice gentle film though, but not really up to much.

When a young womans husband dies suddenly, she is left with debts and doubts then she starts to recieve letters written by him, befor he passed away, telling her to carry out various tasks and to carry on without him. Although i'd say that it's predictable there is a kind of twist ending, but it isn't hard to see whats going to happen to the differant characters.

Good film nice heart warmer

This is a very sad movie. I cried from start to finish! Very lovely film, but it was too much like home to me.

I'm not into chick flicks of any kind, but I loved this film - funny and sad at the same time. Its a real feelgood film, warm and fuzzy. I need to read the book now, the plot was new to me, but what a great idea. One to watch again :)

I thought this film was a bit slow to start with but so glad I watched it through. It made me cry in parts, but really enjoyed it. Two great Irish hunks.

good adaptation of the book

I really enjoyed this movie and the story was heart-wrenching but also light hearted in parts. I thought Gerard Butler's Irish accent wasn't that great but he's such a likeable rogue you forget all about that! His acting along with Hilary Swank's are superb, you feel for the characters from the start. The supporting cast was also endearing. All in all an excellent romcom, one of the best bits is near the mid-end of the movie when Hilary Swank's character meets another Irish guy......he's a real hottie! I know this actor is actually American but he's got a great Irish accent and gorgeous eyes!

I loved that film. A girls' romance without any doubt but great. I cried all the way through, which doesn't surprise me and yet felt really good at the end of the film. Easy to watch and the actors are gorgeous... Recommended for ladies!

Got this for girlfriend thinking it would be a classic weepy chic flick. Not so. Whilst still sad, more laughs than expected and overall a feel-good about life film. Well worth seeing..!

I love the book. I have read it many times, more than I can count. The film was pants to put it blunt. The only similiarities between the book and the film is the fact he is dead and he writes the letters. Thats it. The Americans have taken a fantastic book and ruined it. Don't think they understand British humour...

Brilliant loved it!!! Really emotional film, made me laugh and cry in quick succession.

I have now seen this twice and both times I felt very slightly let down. Gerard Butler is a gorgeous hunk of a man - but I'm afraid his OTT Irish accent in this is just a little grating (he's actually a sexy Scot). I much preferred him in the wonderful Dear Frankie. However, the sight and sound of him singing Mustang Sally will stay with me for a long while!!! I think my problem is more with Hilary Swank - I just don't warm to her as an actress in this at all so consequently it's hard to feel as emotional about it all than I would have normally. Still, there are some great bits in this and for Gerard alone I'll give it three stars!

very good film, but i think it is typically a 'girly' one.

Recently I've found it trivial to cry for no reason and what reason should be more pathetic than a fictional movie based on a fictional book. But this movie will not only astound but amaze you. A truly heart-felt story it brought even the greatest of cynics (such as myself) to tears. It’s a movie for those who believe in love, who believe is survival and who believe that those who leave us, never truly go. They will always be with us helping and guiding us through the most difficult of times. Most importantly this movie made me believe. For all my fellow cynics P.S. I Love You!

I found this film enjoyable, my friend thought it was mushy n' drivel!? I knew this was going to be a girlie film, which is meant to tug at the heart strings. Yes, it was mushy, but it also made me laugh in places. The scenery in ireland was inspiring, but the accents were awful - shame. Loved the flash backs & the friends - worth watching, if a girlie girl who likes a semi-weepy.

Having read the book, I was really looking forward to seeing the film and I was not disappointed. It mainly remained true to the book with a few changes but overall flowed really well and captured the relationship really well. A must see for a hopeless romantic like myself.

This film is brillant, the best I have seen in a long time. Even my boyfriend enjoyed it. It is a great story about how a woman comes to terms with the death of the partner and how romance and love is all that really matter in life! Great if you are a premenstral woman who needs to cry ! Hee Hee

WOW, I haven't read the book and was not expecting to happen what happened at the begining so thought oh no Gerard Butler is not in the film and shes' gonna fall in love with Harry Coonick Jr so was gutted but then got the jist of the film and loved every minute of it. I haven't cried with laughter, cried with sadness in a very long time watching a film. Lisa Kudrow is soo funny in it which is pretty good but all in all a superb film. And in the end Harry turned it around for me I like him now but that's only because of the ending, if it had been the other way then I would have felt empty. LOVE IT A DEFINITE MUST

I loved this film, great story line and would defiantly recommend.

If I saw the film before reading the booking i would have thought it would have been the best film in the world. They chose the right actors to play holly and Gerry. gerard butler was perfect for the role , but the film could have been better In the book Holly had three brothers and parents who were together. some my favourite scenes from the book esp when Gerry was dying were missing. Original dialogues from the book were used for other characters in the film .. . I think if it was based more accurately on the book and not an american film then i think it would it would have done the book justice as cecelia Ahern is an amazing writer

Im not normally one for romcom / chick flicks but im 4 months Pregnant and hugely hormonal - for some reason I felt the need for some tears, and some love in the air ... I decided on this one because I developed a crush on Gerard Butler after watching (and adoring) 300. Good god he's fine. Also throw in to the bargain James Marsters (im a huge Buffy fan), and so I thought id give it a go as I fancied a good cry and some feel-good factor. I cried a lot (although it could be the hormones) and thoroughly enjoyed the attractive male cast but its still a little contrived and obvious ... but it was very 'nice' and made me a little warm inside. Not enough humour perhaps and a bit cringeworthy at times. Great for girls to get in touch with their feelings, but don't force the fella to watch it, it just ain't fair on them!

I really enjoyed this film. It really does pull on your heartstrings, I was sobbing like a good'un at the end.

I knew when i ordered this film that it didn't require any kind of concentration, and i was right - it didn't. It was ok (very bad Irish accents, very very bad!!) but the book is better. Maybe I'm being too hard....

If you like films which make you cry buckets while smiling abut the main character's triumps then this is the film for you. It was very sad but there were comedy moments as well and some brilliant acting from most of the cast. I really loved this one even though it made me cry so much. It reminded me of films like Beaches and Steel Magnolias.

What a great movie I lauged and cried in equal portions. You will need a large box of tissues for this one. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

This film is one for the girls, very romantic and sweet. Really enjoyed the fact that the girl received love letters after her boyfriend had died. It really was such a good flim. It has some comedy to it to make you laugh and I liked the fact that it had a mixture of romance, comedy and even sadness. This dvd is similar to love acually and bridget jones , same humour, Had a strong storyline. Id recommend its not to be missed!!

I was very dubious of whether to watch this after enjoying the book by Cecillia Ahern so much!! However if you watch the film in the knowledge that it is no where as good as the book but is still a lovely story you will enjoy it! It still made me cry!

Quirky and clever, written in a very different style, dealing with a bereavement, an innovative, romantic loving idea. An absolute winner for me, and the soundtrack is brilliant, I downloaded it straight after the film. One to watch.

One of those films which you can sit back and enjoy without having to concentrate too much. The plot is simple, but effective. Perhaps rather cheesy but as a chick flick it has the romance, comedy, highs and lows that make it an enjoyable film. As a guy, i obviously didnt enjoy this as much as my wife, but it is one of those chick flicks that guys can watch and still not feel they have wasted 2 hours. Slightly bordering on unrealistic at times but you do start to connect to the main characters and become interested in the result.

So disappointed with this film. Loved the book, it was sensitive and funny. The film left me cold and struggling not to turn it off after 15 minutes. Finally gave in after 35 minutes and pressed the off button.

P.S. I Love you - I was so excited to see that they had made a film - I read the book after a friend had recommeneded it to me. The book was fantastic, it got to the point where I could no longer read it on the tube on the way to work as everytime I picked it up I cried! So the film, well it was ok - I think if I hadnt read the book I would have enjoyed it more - I also feel if it hadn't had such an american slant on it it would have been better - they seemed to take the seriousness out of it - turing it into a more light hearted version - for me the emphasis was on the fact that her husband had died, sadly but had taken time to develope this method of still being with her every month by sending a letter - helping her come to terms with her loss. A truey wonderful story sadly let down by the film - my advise - read the book, and if you have no intention of reading the book - then enjoy the film for what it is!

This movie is the sum of it's parts - stupid plot, lack of chemistry between the lead actor/actress and nauseating performances from all the cast. Couldn't wait for it to end - had to watch it because my better half convinced my that it gets better...it didn't. How Hilary Swank ever got an Oscar for anything is beyond me. I wouldn't even recommend this for the girls, it lacks anything of a substance.

Heard that the film was a major let down to what the book is, but i havnt read the book an think that it must be excellent then to what i thought of the film. Thought that this was going to be a bit of a let down but it really wasnt. Enjoyable film.

loved the film a bit of everything but a true modern love story that makes you reflect on your own life and how you can take things for granted sometimes.

If there was a 4.5 I'd give it that, because this film is not an all time classic or anything but I loved it and watched it twice! I hadn't read the book, which obviously helps massively as I came with no preconceived ideas of how it should be. This is a fun and sad film. One thing I would say is that if you have been recently bereaved, it could be really good to help you cry, but you'd need to be sure you were ready for that and won't just end up feeling jealous that your loved one didn't write you letters to help you with life after their death! I think its probably a fine line... For me its not so recent (and not a spouse) and it just helped me have a good weep :) A good look at grief and the process of moving on, although I find it interesting that it was written by someone who wasn't married themselves and wonder what married people will think of this film. Good girly night in, and even better to watch alone so the tears can flow unnoticed but just as many laughs as tears and the traditional journey of self-discovery :)

Having read the book I wasn't sure whether I would be disappointed - I wasn't, although storyline has been tweaked somewhat for the big screen. Makes you question what you would do in Gerry's position; what a lovely way to say goodbye to someone you love. Made me cry at the end so get those hankies ready.

I have never read the book (must do something about that) so found this a very enjoyable film. It was poignant and romantic as well as being funny, at times. A good cast ensured it's success. A must see for all romantic girlies everywhere!

Yeah guys you would think it's just another chick flick. However, not only is it bearable, it's actually not bad. Like I usually say, you pay for this service anyway, so it's worth sticking on your rental list.

This is a typical 'girl' movie, in that it makes you laugh and cry! Don't watch it expecting to much, because I think you might get disappointed, but if you watch it wanting to see a sweet movie, you'll love it! H. Swank might surprise you, and G. Butler is AMAZING! Ladies...you'll fall in love! Really you'll fall in love with all the male characters. Tissues will be handy, because even the strongest person might get a little choked up!!

alright at times not the best of films

I was disappointed watching this film, as I thought that Hilary Swank usually picks deeper films. The conclusion seems to be that Irish men are good relationship material, despite being somewhat mad! It is a soppy film with a few exaggerated coincidences. But it's a good film to watch if you want an excuse to cry!

Enjoyed this film but as I'd already read the book, I was a little disappointed (as I always am) that the story changes. Hilary Swank was just 'okay' as Holly but she wouldn't have been my choice in this role and I didn't really believe Lisa Kudrow's take on Denise either. Gerard Butler, though, as Gerry was just right. Also - why move it to the US ? It's an Irish story !

Good weepy romantic film, definitely a chic flick - best enjoyed with a glass of wine and a hanky.

I watched this on the recommendation of lots of friends who had been to the cinema to see it. It is quite enjoyable if you have a couple of hours to fill but not highly recommended.

This film made me sob from start to finish. Would certainly recommend to any one who has a heart. Loved IT!!!!!!

I not heard about the book until after talking about the film with one of my girlie friends who absolutley loved the book. The film I did love although it made me cry throughout the whole thing, I even had to stop it 10 mins in to go & have a good old sob ( must be a time of the month thing !) Butler is to die for & is oh so sexy, Swank was ok not really anything special though. Worth a view but have the tissues handy if you're a bit of a softy like me :)

I absolutely loved this film, it either made me laugh or cry for the entire time. The film made me fall in love with the writer, who thinks up the most beautiful stories. Watch this film...and read Cecelia Aherns books...all are amazing!

This movie is very touching. It deals with loss of a spouse, and the process of dealing with the aftermath in a very tender manner. It is a movie with many facades: there is some stunning scenery showcasing Ireland, tragedy, comedy, love, friendship... It is intriguing and beautiful and champions human spirit in the face of adversity, without coming across as a tragedy or melodrama. Watch it.

WARNING - If you want to watch the film, DON'T READ THE BOOK!! For a start, taking the setting away from the Emerald Isle took so much away from the storyline - it just didn't 'work' in America. The 'Irish' accents (if that was what they were supposed to be) were nothing short of laughable. The whole point of the guy leaving the letters was lost amidst the melee of 'romantic interest'(?) characters that did not appear in the book at all. If you want to pass an hour or so in front of an OK film, then that's fine - but then go and read the book and weep!!

This was an enjoyable film to watch but I can't help feeling disappointed because it didn't live up to my expectations. It's simply because I read the book first, which I loved, and was looking forward to seeing the book come to life on the big screen. However, the story changed, bits were left out that weren't in the book and overall , it just didn't hit the spot for me. I know that film makers can't include every little detail of a book when making the film version but the story of 'PS I Love You' was changed so many times in parts which didn't need changing at all.

The cast is super, but they have a directionless synopsis to work with and so the characterisations remain quite shallow. There is no journey for the main character - she is depressed and in mourning at the start of the film and she is depressed and in mourning at the end of the film. This makes for a film where Lisa Kudrow can't even muster a few laughs and Kathy Bates can't even provide much dramatic weight. Depressing. Unmoving. Soppy. Bland. Men, women, avoid this film at all costs.

Not my type of movie but it turned out to be quite enjoyable, although i wont admit that to the wife. This was a nice change and i would definately recommed renting this. Although i found it slow to start with but it soon picks up. Go on give it a go.

This film is seriously intended to reach out the female audience and even though I struggled to cope with the intense feminine clichés, there were some very moving and captivating moments. Particularly, there is a moment towards the end of the film when Mother and Daughter discuss a hard fact of life. The answer that the Mother (Kathy Burke) gives to her daughter is so illuminating its worth watching the entire film just to appreciate that one sentence.

I couldn't even finish watching this!! Absolute rubbish with the worst Irish accents ever. I couldn't finish the rubbish book and thought I could find out what happened without the effort, but quickly realised that I shouldn't have bothered. Awful!

After 25 minutes of little happening and one key point we thought about turning it off. We didnt and we were glad we didnt. Its a great film but its just a bit slow to start off. Stick with it!

I watched this film over the christmas period whilst ill and unless I was too sick to get the point of it then I don't think it has one. The fishing scene has to be the worst. If you are interested in watching Americans indulge themselves in their love affair with Ireland then this is for you. If Hollywood created a genre and named it 'Irish Themed' then this is it. Gerard Butler's character is called Jerry and his favourite song is The Pogues 'Fairytale of New York' and he says 'grand' and 'craick' alot and for those who haven't been to Ireland that pretty much describes everyone there. So maybe you could find yourself laughing at it rather than with it. Hence the one star.

This is a great feel-good film, worth watching over and over again. Odd kind of humour, odd kind of plot great - a fantastic film to curl up on the sofa with.

I read the book before I watched this and I dont think the film quite lived up to what I was expecting but I still really enjoyed it. I always find that if I read the book first! Perhaps just because it was exactly the same story! I shed a wee tear a few times throughout. Even my boyfriend quite enjoyed it.

As they says its never as good as the book

I watched this film shortly after reading the book as I could not put the book down! Within the first 5-10 minutes I was already disappointed and switched it off as didn't want it to spoil my impression of the book. However, another evening I decided to give the film another go... and i'm so glad I did! Although there are a lot of differences to the book (which can be expected) it had me in tears just as much as the book, even my boyfriend had a tear in his eye! Definately worth watching, but keep the tissues to hand....

Yes, I loved it. It was so obvious, but that was what was appealing - waiting until nearly the last minute to realise what was happening. A real girlie film but very very suitable for a sentimental Gran.

Such a sad but funny movie. Following Holly through the early stages of losing her husband. I read the book before this movie and although slightly different I was not disappointed.

I was slightly disappointed with this film. I had heard mixed reviews but very much wanted to see it for myself. I thought Hilary Swank gave an outstanding performance as the young widow but for me there was something missing. Ordinarily I would be in tears but it didn't move me as much as I was expecting. An enjoyable film, despite the subject but not great in my opinion.

A few minutes into this film and already myself and my partner had been put off watching any further. The film is in your face straight away, and not really knowing what's going on; the film is just too instant and gives you no indication as to what is really happening/what has happened up until this point. There is absolutely no chemistry whatsoever between the film's two main stars; the relationship they have with one another doesn't come across at all on screen, and the film therefore just doesn't work. There's no chemistry, the film gives you no introduction whatsoever, and everything about P.S. I Love You is just really badly done. There's nothing about the film that really grabs you, and an on-screen relationship story where there is no chemistry is just never going to work and never come across as believable. Everything about the film just feels wrong and every element of it is dreadfully done. P.S. I Love You is an absolutely terrible film and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

I was really looking forward to seeing this movie so I made it a high priority on my list. I have to say it was pretty good but not as good as I was expecting. It was a a very sweet film with the letters left from the husband telling the wife how to cope without him but I feel it lacked something being the reason I gave it four stars rather than five.

I was way too excited about watching this movie (after i reading the book). So i was a bit disappointed - probably added to that fact is that the DVD i watched stopped playing in the middle - I hate having to take it out and wipe it, just to watch it again. It just spoils the flow of the movie...anyway. It was a nice attempt to bring a wonderful book to life - and i even prefer what happened to one of the male characters in the film rather than in the book. But overall if you have watched the movie first now go read the book and if you haven't yet watched the movie read the book first... hence why my review is called 'read the book' PS, I liked it but not loved it ...maybe it was just ok...

i enjoyed this movie, especially as I had no idea of the story line before I watched it. bit of a chick flick but thats no bad thing.

Couldn't even finish this film it was so bad. The boyfriend, to whom we are no doubt supposed to feel some attachment, dies within the first five minutes of the film and to be honest, this comes as a relief as his ridiculous put-on Irish accent is unbearable. Unfortunately we keep on hearing his voice even after his death. The stereotypes made of his extended family are laughable - butch women and alcoholics sitting around in bars and group-singing along to a Pogues soundtrack. I couldn't care less about this woman's story, her inconsequential loss or her irritating friends. My girlfriend normally loves this type of soppy pap, but even she couldn't sit through the whole thing. It must be rubbish!

This was a great surprise of a film! I was reccomended by my mum that this was a good film to see - and did not think a thing of it, but what a triumph!!! I beg any woman out there to rent this movie. I will not give the plot away, but you will cry quite a lot of the way throught the film - this is not a bad thing though. The characters are real and lovable, and it is the sort of film that makes you think about your own circumstances, and what you'd be like in the same situations. And this is not just a chick flick. I watched it with my husband and he liked it too. But if your partner is very much into only watching matcho films, get your mum or girlsfriends round and enjoy this brilliant film. (will need box of tissues and chocolate on hand)

Movie ruined a good story much better as the book told it.

Ouch this is bad. The characters are devoid of believe-ability and the writer of these terrible letters is so odious that you quickly start to hope his role in the film will be snuffed out as quickly as possible - sadly he endures with a constant barrage of letters that only serve to highlight the lack of emotional depth in all concerned. This is a stinker! It takes more than simply being Irish for a character to be interesting/desirable/compelling/anything worth watching. Was the screenplay written by a nun who has never had a 'significant other' in her devout life or simply by a child? This review does not contain a spoiler - however the title of this junk in itself is a spoiler. PLEASE RENT SOMETHING ELSE.

get ur best friends together, and swoon over the good looking irish guy. a really sweet story, without the 100% typically cheesy ending.

what a total load of old rubbish. characters that were more likely to turn you off than draw you in. when the lead male dies after 15 mins it is more of a relief than a tragedy. he does possibly the worst irish accent i have ever heard. just terrible. couldnt have given a monkies about miss swanks character either. save yourself a wasted rental, read the book with a picture of hillary swank and gerard butler in front of you and let you imagination do the rest.

Read the book, it's so much better. The film has a completely different storyline - I can't see why they had to rewrite the book which was really good!

Was all set for a rom-com girly night in and we were all totally mistified as to the point of this film. The characters were awful and the fake arguements between the two leads was painful to watch. We gave up before half way and it totally spoilt our evening in. I would seriously tell everyone to avoid this film even if your desperate there would even be something better on t.v.!

Would definately watch this again. Probably more of a womans film but then who knows.

This is an excellent film, not too slushy or sentimental and does not have an unbelievable 'and they all lived happily ever after' ending, they actors are all great in thier roles, I would highly recommend this film

I think i must've cried throughout the whole movie but at the same time enjoyed it imensely. It is an increably moving feel good movie. I would recomend it for people who enjoy romantic movies and maybe chick flicks, as i am in that category i really enjoyed this film. It isn't a light hearted film so wouldnt recomend it if you are wanting to watch somthing comical. That doent mean you shouldn't view it as i found it suprising very good. The storying line is made quite interesting with a few twists and the actors did a great and very convincing job. Also if you are a fan of irish men this is deffinately a film for you! I really enjoyed it and I think i might even have to rent it out again :)

It was a disaster. For most of the film the lipsync was out which made the dreadful acting even worse.

After reading the book I was very excited to watch the film but felt let down at it. Rubbish compared to the book! I recommend reading the book not watching the film.

I absolutely love this film, its a real weepy and definately a chick flick! I love the irish actor who plays Gerry and the one who plays William is equally as gorgeous. The story is lovely and its definately a film I will watch over and over...and over! I also think a trip to Ireland is in order if men like that live there!

I liked it well enough. The beginning was a bit slow but it speeded up during the rest of the film. It has you thinking what you would do if you knew you were dying and wanted to do something beyond your life for your loved ones.

I read the book, so knew what to expect. It's a good cry! But still brill! I had a girlfriend over for a proper girly evening...we sobbed in unison! Please watch, with a man size box of tissues and a HUGE box of malteasers!!

A film ruined by Americanisation and over sentimentality. Read the book, ditch the film. It felt like the characters were mis-cast and the situations they were put in felt false and stupid. Two star rating given for the male eye candy but thats really all it had going for it...

If you have read the book, you are likely to be disappointed by the film. I was really looking forward to watching this as I enjoyed the book so much. The whole character of the book seemed to be missing for me. Having said that, if you watched it without reading the book first it is probably quite good. Is Gerard Butler American or Irish cos his accent couldn't make up it's mind which grated slightly.

Quite a nice girlie film to watch by myself but don't think my partner would have rated it very highly. Fairly predictable story line but a few twists to add some interest.

Although this movie is a 'girly' one I thoroughly enjoyed it as did my wife. It tells the story of a woman who is helped through the tragic loss of her husband by a series of letters that he had drip fed to her after his death. Although obviously sad at times it does have an overall warm hearted feel that threads throughout the movie. Sorry about the 'girly' pun, no desrespect meant to the ladies but thoroughly recommended.

As a film if you 'haven't' read the book then I suppose it gets by as an easy-watch film, but if you have read the book then I wouldn't bother watching the film as I feel it does not do the story justice. The screenplay has been changed too much (Americanised and a lot left out) which has left any relation to the book only vaguely recognisable. Shame, because the book was quite good - choose to read that instead.

Being a typical 'chick' I enjoyed this film. It had all the right factors that you would expect. ( including fit blokes with Irish accents...mmmmmm..) Just asked my boyfriend and he says ' Yeah it was alright', which is actually good praise, so watch it with the girls or the man in your life and neither should be dissapointed.

Chick Flick based on book. Light hearted

Sickening Irish accents, to be sure to be sure. If you're into 'top of the mornings' you'll love it. Personally, having read the book, they should have stuck to its story line rather then 'Amercanizing' (note the z!!) the plot, and yes that's for sure to be sure!! Tripe.

Thought this film was really good, more of a chick flick or a sunday afternoon film, had my mum in tears, would def recommend. Good story line and well played characters.

Sorry to say the old thing but the book is much better. They Americanised it and, in my opinion, ruined alot of it. Its an ok chick flick though.

I was really looking forward to watching the film after reading the book and loving it. But I was so disappointed with the film and the two lead characters of Gerry and Holly. There was no chemistry between them and the film was so dull and painful to watch. Also I hated the character Daniel as he was nothing like the compassionate man that was described in the book. I wouldn't recommend this film to anyone.

I rented this movie on a reccomendation from my friend after she read celia aherns novel and to be honest I didn't expect much from it. I thought it was going to be one of those Sad movies which leaves a lump in your throat at the end. I instantly fell in love with it about ten minutes in and I had a smile on my face through the rest of the movie. I LOVED IT! Its got loads of laughs and although it has a fair bit of sentiment in it its not too sad. I thought that parts of it were absolutley hysterical and it had me laughing out loud at times. I had tears in my eyes from laughing at some of the scenes. Its a movie I will definately buy and have as part of my dvd collection because I will definately be watching it again. A definate feel good movie! My male friends might say its a bit of a chick flick but I think that its just great!!

I rented this thinking it would be a heartwarming ,feel-good romantic film, with the addition of the gorgeous jeffrey dean morgan. instead i got the most depressing 2 hours of my life. but it's not one of those 'oh you have to see it, it makes you cry its wonderful' films. i have never seen a film so utterly pointless. why make a film devoted to extracting every ounce of happiness from its audience? even watching our favourite sitcom straight after it didn't cheer us up. AVOID at all costs unless you like being miserable!

What a lovely film, a begining, a middle and an end. Just how I like them.

This is a stand-out-in-the-crowd film ~ nearly gave it 5 stars, but lacked a touch of that certain extra. Very romantic and very funny, HIGHLY ENTERTAINING.

The title suggests this is going to be a sentimental rom-com, and sure enough the opening sequence features one boy-girl couple and the ups and downs of their relationship. But then (12 minutes in!) the opening credits roll, and thereafter we’re in for a shock: the boy has died. But he’s arranged for the girl to receive regular messages from ‘beyond’; after his death! And the rest of the movie is the story of her living the life he’d planned for her before he died. We have to wait a long time to find out HOW he’d managed to organise this, though the mystery is resolved in the end. The movie includes some strange ‘dreamy’ sequences in which the guy is alive again – and flashbacks to when he was – but once you’ve gotten used to this, the plot is straightforward enough; there’s not overmuch sentiment.; and the movie’s enjoyable, entertaining and suspenseful. Unfortunately it doesn’t quite end satisfactorily, it kinda peters out. But I’d still recommend it.

Apparently the book is good, said my wife. But the move is horrible, slow, boring, without humor or jokes. It was a real pain and I was waiting for it to get better when I was happy that it was over. Waste of time.

Not as good as the book

Absoloutely brilliant film, loved it. Contained a good story, sad and happy moments.

Having read the book by Cecelia Ahern prior to watching the film I noticed everything that had been missed out. I felt that the film missed how devestated she was for losing her husband and she didn't seem that bothered by it compared to how the book perceives her to be. Didn't watch the film to the end as I got bored by it.

I thought this film was very good, although very sad. The film was not as good as the book but that applies to most books that are made into film. I would definitely recommend this film as a chick flick - get the tissues ready !

A bit long and confusing

This book is brilliant, such a lovely story. Oh but i'm supposed to be reviewing the film? Hmmm... Gerard's irish accent is just awful & really means it's hard to then take anything he says seriously. Hilary was an erm interesting choice to play Holly. Lisa Kudrow however is great as Denise & almost saves the film. Really? Buy the book..

I just put this on my list as a space-filler thinking I would have to be really bored to watch it but its no where near as bad as I thought. In some parts its surprisingly good and I had a good laugh - its also not too morbid which was a relief...

This has got to be one of the best Rom-Com's I have ever seen, from the start this movie has you hooked, it is absolutely fantastic. This is the type of movie that you just wanna cuddle up and watch with a bottle of wine ( and a huge box of tissues), full of laughter and tears definately a 10 out of 10 movie.

On paper this sounds like an interesting premise; romantic, heartwarming, quaint... but it doesn't work with this cast. Hilary Swank is fine; but the male leads are so, so wrong and terribly mis-cast. Harry Conick Jnr should stick to his piano. This film should have been perfect for those cold winter afternoons - snuggling with a box of tissues and choccies but it just didn't work. Don't bother.

I didn't have very high hopes for this movie when I first started watching it but as it progressed it really pulled on the heart strings and had me reaching for the Kleenex. If you love a good sentimental heart wrenching movie with a bit of Irish charm thrown in to boot then this movie is for you.

Loved this film perfect for a Snowy Day!

I tried, I really tried, to get into this film, but ended up switching off after an hour- what a waste of a rental!! I thought from the title and description it'd just be a bit of reasonably entertaining, touching, lighthearted romantic comedy with some good actors...... no great expectations of having my mind blown away- but it was a dissappointment. Initially promising start, but was ultimately pretty dull, not very original, and totally impossible to believe in (even making all the usual concessions for a film like this and TRYING to suspend belief!!). Don't bother!!

I rented this for my sister and she liked it, i guess its one for the ladies!

A passable way of spending the evening - pleasant enough with some very lovely scenery - and I'm not just talking about Ireland. Some funny lines but many more moments that make you go 'Ah'. However, there are better chick flick films out there so put this one lower down the list... Not one for the hubby - unless you want to hint up on the romance techniques!

I was so looking forward to seeing this film as I had enjoyed the book, but it did not work on screen, I would have been confused as to what was happening if I had not read book. I did not like the actors at all, in my opinion not well cast. So all in all I did not enjoy it, but hey you have to watch to learn.

In short I got this because the mrs had read the book and had said it was a good story. It may have been a good book, but sweet baby jesus this was such a poor movie my eyes almost bleed, the story jumps backwards and forwards in such a joltish way its sometimes hard to keep up, even more so because its incredibly poorly acted schmultz, and you end up not caring about the charachters. Hilary Swank has won 2 oscars, if you had never seen her in a film before you would wonder how, Gerard Butler should hang his head in eternal shame - in this film he sounds like an American trying to be Oirish. There are a few nano seconds of light relief in this cheese packed monstrosity in the form of Lisa Kudrow, think Friends but funny, but blink and you'll miss her, thats if you havent tried to rip your own eyes out before an hour of this film, at which point I considered burning the DVD to spare someone else the horror of watching this!

It was a Saturday Night, the maltesers were ready, as was the white wine and I was settling in to a night in on the sofa with my husband. 'P.S. I love you' was the perfect balance of romance, comedy and content. It is a chick flick, but because of the humour and sensetivity, my husband, not only sat through it with me but, actually enjoyed it. It did stray a little from the plot of the book but this didn't seem to distract me, as the film stood in it's own right. Boys, If you are looking for a romantic film for Valentines Day this could be a very good choice and it won't be too much of a chore for you guys to sit through. You might even enjoy it...although you might not admit it!

Totally amazing film for any girly girl! If you need a good cry or just a really lovely film to watch then this one is for you! I cryed from begining to end! I have since brought this film and added it to my collection! Fantastic!!

I thought this movie was amazing, haven't seen a movie in a while that has touched me this much. It definalty makes you think about life and how precious it actually is. I would recommend this movie as the perfect chick flick. Expect a few tears.
