I Am Legend  (2007)

First off let's get some points straight. 'I Am Legend' is NOT based on Omega Man, 28 Days Later or any other 'zombie movie'. Instead it is an adaptation of an excellent little book from the 1950s called 'I Am Legend', written by Richard Matheson, which was in fact the inspiration for the above movies. Sadly the excellence of the book doesn't quite translate but this is still the best attempt so far to capture Matheson's story on screen. Our 'hero' is Robert Neville, the last surviving man of an epidemic that swept across the United States and then the world, destroying the whole populace. But it didn't kill everyone as many were turned into mutant like creatures that stalk the night, eating any living thing they come across. During the day Robert must see to his own needs and try to cope with being alone for so long, with only a dog to keep him company. And this is where Will Smith excels, capturing the madness that is slowly taking over Robert's mind. From his conversations with mannequins in the DVD rental store to his accurate quotations from Shrek 2, Will Smith brilliantly plays a man on the verge of a breakdown. And mention must be made of the dog, possibly the best animal performance in film since Pirates Of the Caribbean's undead monkey. Unfortunately despite the brilliant atmosphere of 'I Am Legend' (if you thought London looked creepy in '28 Days Later' wait until you see New York), combined with impressive performances from the lead, this isn't enough to entirely save a film from it's two major flaws: the ending and the 'mutants'. The zombies in 'Shaun Of The Dead' were more impressive than the creatures in this film. The director Francis Lawrence seems to have liked the CGI used on the city so much he decided to use it again for the mutants. Entirely. This makes them seem more cartoon than anything else and definitely decreases the fear factor substantially. Secondly is the ending which, without spoiling it, is nothing like the book and feels rushed rather than satisfying, though it does get the job done. 'I Am Legend' is really a 3 star film, but is lifted to 4 stars due to Will Smith, the dog, and the valiant attempt to deal with a complex psychological issue set in a terrifying situation. If you're after a scary horror film look elsewhere, but if you'd like to see an alternative treatment of the vampire/zombie genre (as the creatures are not referred to as either it's up to you which term to use), this is definitely worth a look.

this movie was so hyped up and the trailers were great, but actully watching the movie? let me tell you- a BIG dissapointment. There's just 1 person in the movie for three quaters of it, which makes it a little boring- not to say the least, and okay the special effects were good but whats the point if the rest of the movie is so bland?not much action and quite depressing. people do not waste your money on going to see this movie , i predict it to be a career low for Will Smith.

Very poor remake of the Omega man. But the special effects are quite good.

Fantastic film. Saw it on the big screen and the suspense was unbelievable. Had to hold my mouth shut for shouting out. Will Smith is great as is his dog. The 'infected' are quite disturbing and the word 'hive' always freaks me out. The scene where they try to trap him is really on the edge of your seat stuff. I'm not old enough to have seen the Omega Man so this film was just fine by me without any comparisons except for possibly 28 Days Later. Would recommend to all except those with weak hearts and/or bowels.

If you asked me to name the worst movie I have ever seen, (and Ive seen a lot) this one would be it, by a mile. I cannot understand why anyone would make this crap, or how anyone could enjoy it. If you like seeing animals hurt and lots of random scenes strung together this movie might be for you. But it was the most uncomfortable hour and a half of my life. Id give it minus 20 stars without hesitation.

My friend and I sat there at the end and could not figure out why this raked in more on it's first day at the box office in the states then LOTR? Maybe it was Will Smith as lead and seeing a deserted CGI New York? There were a couple of glimmers of gold, but overall we found it dull with poor script and editing. When you come out of a film thinking you, shock horror, could do better then their is something wrong.

As most of this film is set manhattan with only Will Smith and his Dog it had a Cast away feeling,but unfortunately that is where the similarities end as Tom Hanks and his side kick Wilson the volly ball were far more entertaining and the acting was far far superior .Francis Lawrence heavy use of CGI in my opinion killed of what could have been a good movie. Having read the scipt Mr Smith must have thought that this was going to be the action film of the year,but this is no independance day or I-robot for Will Smith fans.If this film had been directed by Alexander Witt,Joe Johnston or Jerry Bruckheimer Smith may have been able to pull it off ,but he seemed miscast in the role of Robert Neville and unfortunately the CGI interaction did not help enhance the film in any way. In the trailers this looks like a fast moving adult version of jumanji mixed with Resident Evil but the film,it limps along from scene to scene. Maybe this is one of thoose films that should have gone straight to release on dvd.

This is utter rubbish... i have never heard a cinema full of people say the word rubbish at the end of a film so loudly and in such unison.!!! The script writer needs a good kicking for producing this rubbish... The genius has thrown together the fact that Bob Marley wrote an album called legend, there's a guy who saves the world, the guy likes Bob Marley! That gives the film it's biggest twist and biggest effort at being remotely clever!!! Here's my idea, I am a guy who is walking through a desert and stumble upon an 'oasis', i tend to get up in the morinings, i like Oasis, my film is called What's the Story Morning Glory! Can you see what i've done there?? RUBBISH!!!

This movie needed Will Smith to make it a success, Will's acting is brilliant and most of the film is focused on him talking to himself or to his dog. However this reminded me of 28 days later and a few other zombie films but is not as gory. The ending seemed a little rushed compared to the rest of the film. If you are hoping that this film will be something like you have never seen before you may leave feeling slightly disappointed.

MY GOD !!!!!!!!!! How could Hollywood make a film so bad. It just was like the most painfull cinama experance I ever had. The whole thing was just like 28 day's later but on bigger budget.

The money spent on this must be enormous, the effects of a 'dead' New York are starkly worrysome, and thats about where all interest ends. It is a dull dull nothing of a movie that you know in the first 20 minutes you are probably going to sit through it, but not really come out having watched anything to enthralling, in fact apart from the New York images the most interesting thing in the first 20 minutes is a 30 seconds clip of an admittedly well hones Will Smith doing pull ups in a doorway... entirely irrelevant to the whole story and pretty much a total waste of time... that sums up the whole thing for me, and entire irrelevance and a waste of time I was glad to leave behind. Not recommended at all.

Im afraid this is total rubbish, in fairness to Will Smith he does his best but the story line is terrible i really dont see how anyone could like this film. My advice: Rent a different film!

Went to see this with few expectations, vaguely aware that the film was a remake and was some sort of zombie/undead outing. Was good. Scared the shat out of me several times! Made me jumo a lot anyway. I was struck by quite a few questions which don't seem to be answered though: - The sketchy info on the vampire type people and who their 'leader' was. - How they could set traps but not communicate. - How Will Smith managed to survive in the city for so long and have everything go so wrong just as we come to see him in such a short sace of time! I was also left with that feeling that something was missing and that I didn't have a clear picture of what was going on (similar to that of 28 days later). Liked it a lot tho, would buy it on DVD.

There's nothing I hate more than comparing old films to new, the truth is simple, without re-makes and updated verisions, great stories would go untold. Original films are great to those who are old enough to remember them but to the young they just look dated. The Star Wars films being a case point. All of us that were born before 1985 obvioulsy prefer the earlier films - but you ask any kid of today which were the better films and the answer is clear - most of the time they haven't even seen the earlier films so the more recent episodes are the clear winner. That is certainly the case with this film also - earlier cinematic attempts at the book written by Richard Matheson were great, but certianly not spoken about in high regards today. This updated version is fresh, modern and certain to be enjoyed by the vast majority. It manages to use the dark reality that 28 days later brought to us - the feeling of this could really happen to us. But also adds the massive Hollywood feel that the American audience demands. Obvoiusly the main story revolves around the mutated human race accidentally by well meaning scientists, however what shines through and makes this an endlessly more intersting story is the slow decent into semi madness that our lead played by Will Smith goes into. We are given very little information at the begining of the film, rather we get to understand more through flash backs and diologue between Will and his pet dog! It works well and further strengthens the film. Other than a slightly weak ending - this really is a very good film and should be watched by young and old alike - I'm sure there's something for everyone!

There was absolutely no reason at all why the brilliant thought provoking twist at the end of the book ( the whole point of the I am Legend story and title ) should have been changed so drastically. It would have still been a blockbusting Hollywood film. I've grown fond of Will Smith, and I enjoyed Independence Day, I Robot, Men in Black. I think he should read the book by Richard Matheson and hang his head in shame ( and stop appearing on the increasingly sycophantic and cringeworthy J Ross chat show ) Now....if you haven't read the book but want to, don't read further. Neville spends his days trying to find a cure but also hunts down the vampires where they sleep and hammers stakes into their hearts. Then a woman shows up, who appears to be immune from the virus like he is. But she has been sent by the vampires, because a lot of them have a mutated form of the virus and they are not rabid blood drinking zombies, they now have laws and a society and civilisation of their own, albeit a nocturnal one for obvious reasons. She betrays him and he is captured and put on trial. Hundreds of vampires jostle under his prison cell to get a look at this monster who has been murdering them one by one as they sleep. Neville finally realises, as they are about to execute him, that...in this new world...HE is the monster, the horror, the legend. There. That would have made a great film, wouldn't it?

I really enjoyed this film, maybe because the average ratings I had read for it beforehand lowered my expectations. Will Smith is amazing and does well to carry the film when most of it is just him and his dog. A couple of parts in the film are heartbreaking and you really feel how Robert Neville is starting to lose his mind by being on his own all this time. The shots of a desolate, overgrown NY are amazing and very realistic. However, the CGI 'darkseekers' are a real let down. You can't help but think that using real people with great make up would have been much better (like in 28 Days Later). There are also a couple of plot holes which could have been explained better. Overall it's great entertainment if you don't go in ready to compare it to something else. Will Smith in one of his best roles.

The effects in this film are quite spectacular - an empty, devastated New York is created to perfection. However, the film is in all other respects quite poor. There is simply nothing the film has to say - and everything relies on you liking Will Smith (which I do), but that is not enough to make a decent film. I guess the money people would not allow it to have the truly bleak ending it should have had, but the upbeat ending is awful.

This is very much a movie who's hype is greater than its parts. I should have known better than to waste my time and money really, its a well known fact that Will Smith + big budgets + summer blockbuster = bad movie, you've only got to look at 'Independance Day' or 'Wild West' to realise that. But no, I was seduced by the hype and by the opinions of others who shall remain nameless. So unless you really like Will Smith (there's little other than his ego on show in this film) or just damn bad films, don't bother renting this. I wish I could give it minus 10 stars.

In “I Am Legend” Will Smith stars as (Robert Neville) a colonel/scientist who (as far as his character knows) is the last man on earth. He dedicates his life to finding a cure after the world is dominated by a man made virus, which was originally created to somehow cure cancer, but has resulted in all humans beings transformed into zombie-like killers. I am a huge Will Smith fan so it breaks my heart to say this film is very disappointing, Smiths performance is very moving, but he gets no help from the supporting cast, except from Sam (his Dog) The CGI creations of an empty, ruined New York by Director Francis Lawrence are visually stunning, but this isn’t surprising considering he made the excellent Constantine 2 years earlier, But after a while it becomes boring, even though the films running time is only 101 minutes. The screenplay is all over the place. For a more satisfying viewing experience can I point you in the direction of “28 Days Later”.

We were lucky enough to see this at Inverness cinema with just us and 4 other people - bring on matinee performances! - so as you can imagine it was all very dark, all very quiet and this just added to the sense of isolation that Will Smith was in. Without giving the plot away you can imagine where i cried.... heart broken... didnt help that the woman behind me was sniffing, and husband beside me was gripping my hand so tightly i thought my circulation had stopped. Add to that water all over myself when i jumped on numerous occassions. Sound track is great, the CGI is amazing, story line eerily could become a reality in this day and age..... wonderful wonderful stuff. Even prompted a heated debate in the car on the way home..... total entertainment and Will Smith is just fab.

this film is utterly rubbish. same old story line as all other zombie movies.has had loads of money thrown at it as u can see from the special effects. could of been so much more.

AMAZING MOVIE LOVED EVERY MIN OF IT HIGHLY RECOMENDED TO SEE

An amazing looking deserted CGI New York , and some impressive acting from Mr. America Will Smith can not save this film. What I don't understand is why they chose the option of having CGI zombies on this film. Real extras, with some good make up would have been so much more effective. Whenever the camera cuts to the monsters I couldn't help but feeling that I was no longer watching 'I am legend' but an Xbox game trailer. It is beyond me that the film producers decided to include these very cheap looking monsters in a film with such a huge budget. But cheap effects aside, nothing happens much for the whole duration of the film. There were a couple of scenes which were very good but other than that I was bored 20 minutes into the film and I left the cinema thinking that they had such a good opportunity to make something really good. Instead the film studio delivered a boring film with not much happening in it.

There are no redeeming features. None. This was dull. Bland and worse self-important. Its ok for a film to give you a message, it a wonderful Life etc are Fab. I was expecting pacy action packed and I dunno Will Smith films usually are funny or interesting and funny, this is neither, its a Fray Bentos pie BLAND. Don't pay money to see it and its not just me in a grump either because walking out of the cinema at the end of the film I heard not even 1 positive comment.

I am not a huge fan of Will Smith, although he does an excellent job in this movie. Yes we know he can do the action thing, but he is wholly impressive in the moments of humour and despair that unfold. I am however, a huge fan of the I am legend graphic novel that followed the book, and I was impressed at the pace of the film mirroring the book. I couldn't understand why the film went with fairly mindless killing machines ala 28 days later, rather than the shambling, but more intelligent vampire/zombie hybrids of the book. My favourite thing about the book was that Neville was driven mad by the nightly taunts of his ex-best friend, challenging him to come out from the safety of his home. Hoping to preserve his sanity, he would then spend all day trying to find and kill the guy to no avail. Why leave this kind of excellent source material out? The film does make more of a meal of the uninfected dog that accompanies Neville, for once giving a canine a real sense of character and adding something to the movie. This should have been a five star excellent movie, but was let down by the third act. The film builds and builds the tension until running out of steam leading to a hugely dissapointing end. A real shame.

i beg you...i beseech you...please...DONT BOTHER WITH THIS FILM! save your time and cash. The infected are supposed to be humans..why the director went for full CGI, we shall never know because it totally ruins it. the daytime scenes are fine..will smith is ok..hes done better films. but as the sun sets, so will your interest. an absolute waste of money and barely like the book..zero stars!

Expectations were high for this one. with the trailers showing a fantastic idea of new york after 3 years without people. which is the best part of the movie.. the money spent on effects to make new york look like a jungle is brilliant... BUT they obviously RAN OUT of funds when it come to the creatures.. they looked terrible!! no wonder they didnt know them in the trailers.. they looked so digitally animated it really SPOILED the experience.. they didnt look real at all.. it really annoyed me. the story itself isnt that great either. but i aint saying about it cos i dont wanna spoil the movie.

This film is slow to start, and is not what you could call an action pic at all, in fact the action seems mainly to be at the end of the film, which has a explosive but in my opinion poor ending, a lot more could be done with this film and elaborated more after a cure was found.

Great movie! If you like the “God’s Lonely Man” storylines, this one is for you. Will Smith (Robert Neville) riddled with loneliness, obsession and guilt, battles against unprecedented odds to find the antidote to a super virus that has ravished the populace. The virus, once the eagerly awaited cure for cancer, has mutated into the final nail in the coffin for mankind.


Only our man Will survives in this devastated New York, that is, only Will, the animals and an Army of diseased, mutated humans. These mutants are night stalking, cannibals, hell bent on mayhem and violence. Will takes all the necessary precautions for protection, but due to his obsession to find a cure he traps and kidnaps mutants in order to carry out his research and experiments back home in his basement. Obviously this isn’t appreciated by the mutants, sending both Will & Mutants on a collision course with a spectacular crash ending.


The atmosphere of the movie really captures the haunting, eerie atmosphere of the book “I Am Legend by Richard Matheson” from which the movie is loosely based. My only hang-up was, although the CGI CITY looks breathtaking, the creatures leave a lot to be desired. Real actors should have been used to add to the whole freaky vibe that swims along nicely with the action and suspense, but with that said, is not anything so bad that it will detract from the overall presentation and enjoyment of the work.


Will Smith shows the emotion and skill he posses as an actor in this role, so if you are a fan then you will love this, and if you don’t like him give it a viewing. You may be surprised. Also, acting his paws off along side Will is “Sam” his ever loyal dog. I don’t know if it is the same dog in all scenes but the performance from the K-9 or 9’s is top rate. All in all a highly entertaining film.

This is the 3rd film adaptation of the book I am legend. Previous films being Last man on earth (1964) and Omega man (1971). Should not be called I am Legend, if it's not going to stick to the book. I Still prefer the book, as it conveys the character's emotions better, whereas the film is more geared towards screen candy. That aside the special f.x. are stunning and Will Smith plays the part well.

DON'T RENT THIS POOR FILM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My review of this film is an average storyline made better by exceptional acting by Will Smith.. Would not have been as good if a quality actor did not have the role. More of a Drama/Scifi-Thriller than Horror or Action. Never gets boring you will want to see the finish as soon as you start to watch. Set in New York City a lethal virus has wiped out 90% of worlds population and left the other 10% infected with a virus(which makes them like night walking zombies). Smith's role is a Doctor the only surviving healthy man searching for a cure to revive the human race.. Individual ratings out of 5.. Plot.. 3 Effects.. 4 Action.. 3 Acting.. 5 Gripping abilty.. 5 Overall Satisfaction.. 4 At the End of the film i felt slightly dissapointed, but few hours after you are still thinking about the film, Sticks with you. Its one you will remember and will want to watch again cant wait for the DVD.

Great film. Lots of tense moments. The ending let it down as it seemed to be rushed or an after thought. Worth watching - would see again.

I was a little let down by this film, I hadn't seen it at the cinema and waited for the DVD release. Will Smith is one of my favourite actors and I absolutely loved Independance Day and Head of State. His acting was wonderful and he is very talented. I am Legend was good viewing however in some ways I expected a little more than what I got. Robert Neville is the last guy on earth or so he thinks and he does find a cure to stop all these mutant humans.

Based on the novel, this version of I Am Legend was promised as being closer to the book than the terribly over-rated Omega Man was. Indeed it does retain some elements of the classic sci-fi novel (such as the all important vampire-like creatures), but once again deviations from the source are made which end up making this just another variation on a theme. That said, it is a strong film, with the likable and talented Smith managing to succesfully hold your attention for the whole running time. Slow pacing builds the tension and isolation well, with a fw jump moments which should please the audiences. Shame about some of the CGI being a bit weak, destroying some moments, but on the whole it is an effective film. A shame they didn't stick to the book - it would be nice to see a film use the great twists of the original story, but for now this piece of decent sci-fi hokum will have to do.

Can't believe I sat through this.. It is poor, no real story line to it and a nothing ending. Shaun of the Dead has the same script but is better. Huge let down, take my advice and don't bother!

Was expecting so much more from this. It was good for the first half hour or so but went downhill from there. It got to the stage where you wanted to yell at the screen the whole time and to me this is only acceptable in the worst teeny slasher movies, not a supposed blockbuster like this! The effects were pretty poor, at times it didn’t look real at all (I know it’s not real anyway but it should look it if the effects are any good). Was left with a load of unanswered questions that were never explained which was frustrating. Also the ending was a complete let down, just thought “is that it?”. Was waiting for the next part and then it finished. Think the book would be well worth a read as it’s an interesting concept but wouldn’t bother watching this again.

I thought it was brilliant how it was done, the way in how New York could be just deserted. For example they show a really hot summer's day but there are christmas decorations up, to show how long New York has been empty. Will Smith played the part brilliantly

the idea of the film is excellent but so much more could have been done with it. for starters the infected are like vampires that can only come out at night, a fortune will have been spent on the make up and prosthetics but you hardly see them in the film. There are only a couple of tense moments and there should have been many more. It is obvious that there is some kind of link between smiths character and the main mutant but this was never explored or explained. Will smith deserves all the praise he gets for his part. The camera is on him 99% of the time and he came across excellently. my only complaint is, it should have been longer and there should have been more action.

Following all the hype of this film, i have to say it was one of the most dissapointing titles i have watched in a long while, they could have done so much more with the plot, the cgi 'zombies' were dreadful made the film look like a pants 28 days later, the only good thing about this film was will smith, because the guy can act well and he drags it up from the depths but not enough to save it. Wouldnt recommend

Any film which holds nice Emma Thompson (here playing a 'Dr Crippen', crime buffs please note) responsible for the death of 5 billion people can't be all bad, and I AM LEGEND, fourth version of the famous work by Richard Matheson, is almost all good. Despite those who harp on about the changes from the source novel and undeniable weaknesses in the CGI department LEGEND, like Smith's earlier I ROBOT, proves a pleasurable surprise. Smith plays Robert Neville ostensibly the last man on earth, fighting the zombies of the dark while struggling to isolate an antidote to a virus which has destroyed humanity. Swopping THE OMEGA MAN's over talkative, white haired soul brother brethren which menace Charlton Heston for more fearsome, inarticulate brutes is a real improvement, while Smith's sensitive portrayal of Neville brings to the surface a humanity and sadness streets away from Heston's chess playing, machine-gunning white autocrat. In one scene Smith tearfully asks a shop mannequin to talk back to him. To his credit the actor walks away from this moment with his dramatic integrity intact, and introduces a pathos missing from the franchise before. Whether or not one sees the enhanced Christian subtext as successful or not will be a matter or taste (I gave it the benefit of the doubt), but the film retains the central irony of an atheistic hero proving the salvation on mankind. In any case it is no more subtle - and arguably less blasphemous, should one care - than Heston's carefully staged 'crucifixion' death scene in OMEGA. Interestingly the new script has Neville refer to his perilous existence as 'ground zero' - a phrase pregnant in the context of mass death, and which aptly recalls the apocalyptic mood of 9/11. Like the contemporary American mood, Neville too thinks he can 'fix it' (ie put the status quo back together again) a view reinforced by the final image of LEGEND: a fortress community, a harmonious USA in miniature perhaps, and one presumably besieged by hostile attackers. Criticism of LEGEND has largely been levelled at the last third which has been taken as inferior to the first two, an opinion no doubt started by the American market which saw a feel-good ending. For the UK DVD release this has been replaced by something more downbeat and is more powerful. Having said this, the most memorable parts of the film remain those which evolve around the lonely Neville in a deserted city, which is convincingly realised. Smith's portrayal of a haunted hero, broken by the death of his dog, is a fine one, and lifts the film well above average. It's a sign of the changing cultural times that Neville's solitary trip and mouthing of the words from the anti-establishment WOODSTOCK in THE OMEGA MAN is here replaced by an equivalent moment before the family-friendly SHREK and amongst sympathetic company at that, an altogether less powerful moment. And if perhaps the closing 20 minutes do seem a little breathless, then this is a minor miscalculation in a genre piece which I think will bear revisiting.

Will doesn't disappoint in this movie it is entertaining all the way through. Would recommend to watch.

I Am Legend is Will Smith's one-man sci-fi thrill show, entertaining in all the ways we've come to expect from the talented actor.

I can't really decide whether I like this film or not. I certainly don't love or hate it, my feelings are lost somewhere in the middle ground. There are some staple entertaining aspects (great scenes and backdrops) and some moments of real tension (when we first see Neville lock-down his house and get in the bath-tub, amongst others). I've not read the book(s), nor knew there was one before seeing the film, but could tell straightaway from the pace in the beginning and the style that this was the case and this really made the ending, and the speed of it's delivery, quite surprising. This film should have been 2.5-3 hours long, there was obviously enough story there to do so and the film-making, for the most part, brought me quite close to Neville and made me care for the outcome and is fate - which any good story should do. I was thoroughly entertained for about 80 minutes, thereafter not so. I wasn't too bothered myself, but my wife says they should have made a bit more out of the arrival of the woman and boy. Another thing, who moved the dummy? I don't see much point in getting the audience asking a question that isn't going to be answered, it just seems like filler to me. And one final detractor were the infected - quite woeful. They looked like 're-drawn extras' from I, Robot, why CGI was chosen over good old-fashioned made up actors and extras I do not know.

When going to watch this film at the cinema, i didn't hear any reviews,so didn't really know what to expect. However, i was blown away by the unique & remarkably plausible storyline.This film had me gripped from beginning to end.Tensely frightening without too much gore(my ideal film). I would quite happily watch it a second time, it had a lasting affect which left me thinking about it long after it had finished.Another fantastic performance from Will Smith.This film comes highly recommended.

some big producer somwhere must of thought, hmm' how can we make will smith more money for xmas but didnt think about money for anything else like a decent script and supporting actors, smith does his best in this but i got the feeling that you could see him thinking to himself am i doing the right thing here, the answer will is no you did not this is a crap film and a waste of your talent, my advice is dont bother with this one, its a time filler at best...now where did i leave that 28 days later disc?

Hands up, I come into this with a fair bit of bias. Richard Matheson's I Am Legend is one of my favourite novels, a gritty story of one man surviving in a world populated by vampires. Yes, I gave up on this being a direct adaptation a long time ago. Yes, I understand the differences between the mediums. Yes, this film is the biggest dissapointment I've seen in a long time. It's good points can be counted on one hand. Will Smith gives a decent performance. The scenes involving him in his daily life are quite good. The score is nice. And there the goodwill stops. Between chasing cartoon deer and being chased by cartoon vampires...no, sorry, Darkseekers (coughtoshcough), Big Willy has little chance to craft a coherent story. By the end, we're expected to believe that an unarmed single mother and her young son could survive a trip up from Mexico without a city's worth of locked doors and munitions that Robert Neville has at his disposal; we're expected to believe a virus could mutate an entire planet into bald panting gymnasts who still love their dogs; and we're expected to believe that God himself is communicating with our hero through cunningly placed butterflies everywhere he goes. The film is a wasted opportunity. Missing the point of the novel entirely, the film goes for an ending that ruins the message of the book and presents one that really doesn't make a lot of sense anyway. In the book, Neville's sacrifice has weight; in the film, it's really not necessary for him to do it. Is he legend, really? Nope, he's a man with a temper and a grenade, and of course, a butterfly guiding his way. Honestly. Avoid. Read the book instead - and hope that one day somebody will try to adapt it directly.

Fantastic effects, good story line enjoyed it immensley. one of will smiths better moments without the we are americans we will overcome speech rubbish.

This may not be a direct remake of 'The Omega Man' (1971) which was an adaptation of Richard Matheson's novel 'I Am Legend' but is another version of the same book, so call it what you will. They may have been better off remaking 'The Omega Man' screenplay because they seem to have lost all the character of the infected which added a level of conflict and understanding. Now they have just become mindless rabid zombies and CGI zombies at that. I've seen this type of foe to many times now, let's just shoot them all then & get the hell out of here. At least they didn't change the end to much, be thankful for that. All in all it's just another hollywood big budget action movie remake... disappointing. Old Charlton Heston still is Dr. Robert Neville and he was truly LEGEND!

If you've read the novel by Richard Matheson you've read probably the finest zombie book there is. If you're watching the movie expecting a similar treat to the book you're in for a massive disappointment. The opening half hour sets the scene perfectly; the empty overgrown streets, the wild animals roaming free around the city, Robert Neville (Will Smith) hunting in his sports car. The movie's biggest problem comes when the sun sets. Readers of the novel will know that by nightfall the hunter becomes the hunted. Packs of rampaging zombies all desperate to ensure 'the last man on earth' is no more. Whoever decided that the zombies should be replaced with CGI 'dark stalkers' should be forced to hand back their pay cheque. They look ridiculous. Any sense of fear you may feel for Robert Nevillie come nightall is quickly lost when what can only be described as packs of 'Gollums on speed' are chasing him. If you've read the tagline on the poster 'The last man on Earth is not alone' you'll know just how wrong this is come the last 10 minutes. If the makers had followed the novel it would have been a great quote but ditching the final third to replace it with a more Hollywood style ending the quote is, like the person who decided on CGI should be, redundant. A missed opportunity.

Smith is the wrong actor to put in a film that requires him being on his own for long periods. Proved by the fact that they had to give him a dog! I found myself hitting the 'fast forward' when he was solo. The CGI effects make this film. This could have been so much better if the director hadn't opted for the easy cliches. Who was keeping the power station going to provide Smith's house and laboratory with electricity? However, you MUST watch the 'animated comics' in the 'extras'. They are genuinely chilling and FAR better than the film.

I am in two minds aout this movie. On the one hand, the performance by Will Smith is excellent... showing the impacts of being alone for 3 years with no one to talk to except a dog. Smith captures the slow decline into madness - talking to manequins in the DVD store is just one of them. He also pays the price for his arrogance - he underestimates his enemy and it costs him. On the other hand - the hype that surrounded the movie on its release left me expecting more. The other survivors aren't zombies or vampires - they are humans - infected with a virus that should have cured cancer. The other problem I had was the over use of CGI for the mutants. It spoils it and reminded me of the dead Egyptians in the Mummy series... they don't quite work. I would love to say that this was excellent, but unfortunately its not. The ending comes from nowhere - Smith's character goes through a complete change in belief in about 20 minutes and it just doesn't seem plausible. However - its good to see New York and the places I have been all overgrown and silent, and Smith does the best with the material he's given. Its enjoyable.. but could have, and should have been so much more.

Very good film, not good ending though.

I loved this film, so much better that the zombies (if that's what you could call them) actually still have brains to think with. Will Smith is brilliant in it (as always). I wasn't ready for it to end, I wanted it to keep going. I would definately recomend watching this and after watching this I definately want to read the book.

As has been pointed out previously this is not a remake of the Omega Man, it's the other way around. OM was inspired by the novel 'I am legend'. Anyway Will Smith is totally convincing as the main character, only being upstaged by his faithful pooch. A very tense (and intelligent) storyline which is brilliantly realised, you really feel that he's alone in the city, makes the movie a treat from start to finish. Excellent special effects fit seamlessly into the plot and are not horribly over the top - which helps to maintain the movies realistic and dark tone. I'd say it's one of Wil Smiths best roles to date.

I thought the film was excellent, the only one fault i had was the story. I thought it could of had a bit more to it...

I've not seen the Omega Man so I cannot comment on how this film relates to it though many other reviewers seem to imply that this is a remake of it. I have, however, read the book and for me this film is reasonably faithful to the book but updated of course as the book was written in the 1950s. I won't cover the plot in detail as plenty of other reviews do that but if you think '28 Days Later' with only one survivor instead of many then you're not too far off. My only complaint would be that the film could have been a little more faithful to the much darker tone of the book. It seems that Hollywood sometimes shies away from producing darker and more thought provoking movies - it too often has to be a blockbuster or have an upbeat ending. Don't get me wrong though. This film couldn't really be categorised as a blockbuster and it doesn't pretend to be. The special effects are good and Will Smith's portrayal of a lonely man going slightly mad (and understandably so) is exceptional. There is the occasional daft moment - Will Smith's rendition of a Bob Marley song ('I Shot the Sheriff', I think) is so incongruous you might think you were watching an episode of 'Fresh Prince...'. Whilst I did enjoy the film immensely, I'm only giving it four stars because I think it could have been so much better. Had it explored more of the themes present in the book and had it stayed faithful to the book's ending, it could have been one of those films that stayed in the memory for a long time.

I did not know too much about this film. We chose this film as it was supposed to be a 'one to watch' and we are Will smith fans. But i would put this in my top ten 'NOT to watch' films. The only thing that did save it (and only very very slighlty) was the legend that is WILL SMITH. His acting is the only thing you can not be disappointed in - hence the 1 star. The actual visuals were done quite well in all fairness and you could see they had spent a lot of money on the film ..................but what a WASTE! It did have 'make you jump' bits in it but i did not realise it was supposed to be a zombie horror film!? Not only was the story line unbelievable, and i do have a very open imagination the films journey went no where exciting and the ending was well quicte frankly...........rubbish. I was just so disapointed in this film and felt like i wasted 96 mins of my life and it left me feeling thoroughly cheated. Watch it if you wish. But i get the feeling its like martmite................you will either love it or hate it. I am not a marmite fan.

Will Smith gives a fantastic performance as Robert Neville, with only himself and his dog, Sam, in the first part of the film, you would think you would get bored. Not a chance. This film kept me on the edge of my seat pretty much the whole way through. I was a bit disappointed with the ending, but you do understand it. Keep out of the dark!

Oh my god yet another fanastic film starring Will Smith can this actor get any better he just goes from strength to strength genious!! Brilliant film kept me and my fiance on the edge of the sofa for most of the film - defo highly recommend this - brought a tear to my eye twice but I wont go into detail - watch and see!! Best film we have seen in a long time!! BRILLIANT BRILLIANT BRILLIANT!!

As a big Will Smith fan, and having seen the trailer I was sure I would enjoy this...but it was really disappointing. Great imagery of a desolate New York and great acting by Will. and his dog...but a really boring movie. I wish I hadn't bothered! :-(

I liked the film, but the 1971 film (The Omega Man) with Charlton Heston, gave more to the story. So you got a better feel to the film, With these big budget films, they seem to go for the special effects more then let you know the full story, so only showing snap shots of past events.

This film was absolutely brilliant, thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. I don't normally enjoy futuristic films but this one was exceptional. The special effects and casting was fantastic and WIll Smith is a talented actor who played this part perfectly. Well Done!

Just seen it on the big screen. Absolutely loved it. It was much more of a drama than I had anticipated, but that is by no means a complaint. It was a perfect blend of emotional, powerful drama and truly gripping edge-of-your-seat action thrills. And man, was it thrilling! My pulse was pounding so hard sometimes I was afraid people were gonna tell me to be quiet! I wouldn't say it was choc-full of action, but there is more than enough to keep it interesting. And at last, they finally made a movie for those of us who love the whole zombies idea, but can't stand the gorey violence. This is barely bloody at all, with no real 'violence' to speak of. Just kickass action. There are times when it can be a very sad movie though, and although I can't stand miserable movies, I still thoroughly enjoyed this. I felt it was done in a way that was just powerful drama to watch, and made you feel stronger towards the main character. That said, some people with me thought it was a bit too sad unlike the more stereotypical fun blockbusters. So it's not perfect, but hey, I enjoyed it so much I really don't care. Top class movie!

Touted to me as Hollywood does 28 Days Later I was not anticipating much as a) Hollywood rarely improve someone else's idea and b) 28 DL wasn't that good. I was pleasantly surprised then as Will Smith put in a pretty good performance in an excellently portrayed desolate New York City. The only let down was the monster element but guess these were necessary for the film to ultimately go anywhere, otherwise it would've been like an episode of One Man and his Dog, without the sheep, and what'd be the point in that?

Sooooo wanted to see this film as all the 'Hype' set it as 'THE' Movie of 2008, Ok, so after watching it, it wasn't 'THE' movie of the year. Started a little slow and took a while for the story to build. The acting was fantastic, could really associate myself with the situation, the loss, dedication to find the cure. Have to say If you have a deeper grasp on the world as a whole, this film will 'Hit home'. Haven't compared it to other films as some 'film buffs/officianados' have, Just watched/enjoyed it for what it was. Would advise you watch it without distractions, otherwise you won't get the feel for the movie itself. Watch it with No preconceptions and you'll enjoy a good story and a good movie.

though the film won't feature in my top films group, i found it a good film to watch, there are some obvious little problems with the CGI but on the whole a film that I would watch again. Will Smith plays the part very well and once you get used to the way the movie moves through the story it works well. On the whole a good film not great.

good but not a will smith you expect

Okay I saw the trailer so I basically knew it was a bit of a 28 Days Later rip-off and then I watched it anyway, so I guess I only have myself to blame! This film is very, very slow and doesn't really have any action, tension or emotional impact. There are no twists whatsoever and yet it still isn't about the atmosphere it creates, because there isn't any. The 'zombie/vampire/mutant' types are lacklustre and the flashbacks are irritating. Will Smith does an acceptable job and the film isn't awful, it just isn't very good.

I really enjoyed this film, especially the relationship between man and dog!! however, I was a little disapointed in the end, I felt it could have been a little more imaginative for me. Worth a watch though.

Good film worth watching although ending could have been better

This isnt as bad as everyone makes out (including all major press reviews of it). It is a dark film which I am surprised made it out of Hollywood. Ignore the falws and watch a good piece of Sci-FI

I expected a lot of action and a few laughs with Will Smith! But I was way wrong. Will is a good actor and this film made the viewer think. The Fresh Prince of Bel Air was merely a character behind which was an excellent actor.

Great film, but not for the squeamish!

This is a great movie and desrves a place in film history. The cinematography and sound are immense and you can easily believe this as a real event. I found the whole concept terrifying. You may think it has ripped of Resident Evil and 28 days later but this story was written in 1954 and practicallly invented the zombie movie genre. My wife thought the CGI was a bit lame but it didn't bother me. The pace of the film was also engrossing. Really slow but not boring, a lot of it had to do with him being on his own and lack of dialogue.

Although the plot of this film has sort of been done before....28 days , 28 weeks later etc, Will Smith adds that little extra something that makes the film go from from a predictable film to a really good watch. It has all the right suspense and brillant scenes that really make you jump!! The effects are superb... cant really say much about them as it will give the plot away. Oh yes , it's all about the American hype and exaggeration, but you are able to identify being in New York City, all by yourself after a terrible virus has wiped everone out....or has it?

The best thing about this movie is Will Smith's dog. Awful, worst movie of Will's career. Enough said!

I have to say I was very disappointed with this film. It needed a lot more. More depth, more story, more understanding of these vampire like creatures. They definitely missed a trick.... So I would definitely suggest watching the Omega Man instead, maybe a bit dated but had a stronger storyline to it.

this will be a must watch for alot of people it is will smith at he's best and you cant but feel close to the part he plays and it brings out every emotion and feel you have ever flet

I absolutely wasn't expecting this film to be as it was. What I had pictured was Will Smith wise cracking and one-lining his way through hordes of monsters with a large caliber weapon. Entertaining, but little else. Hence why I missed out on the cinema release, and waited for the DVD. However, its really nothing like that at all. Three quarters of the film contain Smith and his dog (and some mannequins), and nothing else. There is very little of the infected humans seen untill the very end, and there are no other characters until near the end. I must admit, if you had told me before I watched it, that the film was pretty much just a one man show staring Will Smith, with very little monster blasting, I would probably have been expecting a flop. However, Smith delivers what must be amongst the best, if not the best, performance of his career, brilliantly depicting the loneliness, and decent into madness, of a man who believes himself to be the only human left alive. Scenes where he talks to shop mannequins display a sense of desperation for companionship, in a slightly disturbing manner. The end is, to be fair, a bit of a cop out, and some of the storyline elements highly predictable, but it doesn't really spoil the film. If I could give it 4.5/5 in a review I would for this reason, but you can't, and 4/5 would be too harsh, because it really is a great film.

a rollercoaster of sadness horror and good fun

Dull bit - zombie - dull bit - zombie - dull bit - very dull bit - even dulller bit - zombie - zombie - zombie - dull bit The film tells its story but fails to deliver on the metaphorical and deeper issues that it alludes to but doesn't quite explain or fully explain. Perhaps these will be inserted in the 'Director's Cut'. There is nothing new in this film, that hasn't been done better than somebody else. Watch Twelve Monkeys, 28 Weeks Later or Dawn of the Dead instead.

lets get one thing straight. I loved the philosophical idea behind this film, i found it a really good insight into the writers mind and a possible future for us all. however they made a bit too much action out of it. for example all the rifles and violence associated made it just a bit stupid really. some films pull it of, this one just did not matter. I would honestly go back to the cinema and not feel remorse at having my £7 back. bottom line don't pay to see it. wait till it comes out and you would feel a bit better at watching it that way. what stops it being a complete and utter waste of time and money was Smiths' acting and the death of his dog.

I came into this film as a fan of the Richard Matheson novel, expecting it to be fairly good, but to see the original story raped and skewed by the Hollywood machine. I'm very pleased to announce then, that not only does this capture the tone of the book, but it's also a great film in its own right.. To those not in the know, the novel is more amount the mindset of the last man on earth. The main character spends his days and nights constantly fighting off the vampire hordes (or dark seekers as they're known here) but the real meat of the novel is in his descent into loneliness and madness. It's quite surprising then that the film follows this (given that this is a Hollywood event picture) and it dedicates a lot of time focusing on the main character. Will Smith is absolutely fantastic, and carries the whole film. You're always going to need a likeable star if you're going to spend so much time alone with him, but he plays it very real and believable too, drawing a surprising amount of emotion from it. Yes there are changes to the book, but ones that serve the movie better I think. Setting the story in New York and using flashback throughout the film allows it to be more grandiose, and also more accessible. Also some of the action/thriller setpieces are gripping and terrifying in their own right. It's a shame that it strays away from the book in the last act, as this is really one of the most celebrated parts of it. That said the ending provided here still isn't as bad as some people have made out. The alternate ending strikes more of a right tone, but still doesn't quite get it right.. It's a small misstep, but it can't ruin the preceeding greatness. Rent this for a moody, yet exciting thriller (Also read the fantastic novel!) (Incidentally the CGI that so many people have complained about really isn't that bad - it strikes me as a bit of a silly gripe, and it doesn't pull you out of the film at all - honest.)

Will Smith gave a decent performance and kept the film interesting, despite being the only cast member on screen through the first 60 or so minutes. Computer imagery was a bit behind the times at parts; certain shots could have done with being removed with the faces being so obviously computer generated, but on the whole was bearable. The storyline is to be expected, nothing groundbreaking but is occasionally exciting and surprisingly touching at parts. Little character development throughout the flick, we don't even get a chance to see Smith go completely insane due to being deprived of any kind of social interaction. It's worth seeing, if you can enjoy it for what it is and keep your expectations fairly low.

I really fail to see what is so special about this film and how it could have even been a box office success! It's no different to '28 weeks later' and others in the genre. The only thing that was good was Will Smith's acting: he is well worth every penny he was paid to be in the movie. The storyline etc... itself was run of the mill and quite unimpressive. Had I know I would've waited for it to come out on DVD instead of going to see it at the cinema. In a nutshell, the movie is about redemption and it explores various themes about humankind. Nothing that hasn't been seen or done before, though.

Apparently the script for I Am Legend was banded around Hollywood for many years and was turned down by studios and actors alike before Will Smith decided to play the role of Robert Neville.
There is one very good reason that this film was rejected so many times ....Its Dull!

Robert Neville is a brilliant scientist, but even he could not contain the terrible virus that was unstoppable, incurable, and man-made. Somehow immune, Neville is now the last human survivor in what is left of New York City and maybe the world. Perhaps mankind's last, best hope, Neville is driven by only one remaining mission: to find a way to reverse the effects of the virus using his own immune blood. But he knows he is outnumbered...and quickly running out of time.

I'm disappointed That Will Smith decided to take the lead in this film . His personality normally takes over the screen in movies but because the character of Robert Neville is so dull and one dimensional you cant help but feel disappointed.
Even the two remaining living unaffected humans ( one is a mute child for some reason ) have personalities of a brick and to be quite honest i didn't care what happened to them.

There are a few scenes involving the infected that make you jump but to be quite honest even they are too CGI to look real . The Director should have taken a leaf out of the makers of 30 days of Night to get the realistic monster feel .


The ending is dull and all too convenient and summed up what was a very depressing , boring ,disappointment of a movie.

Apparently there is an IMAX 3D version of this film. I suggest you see that version , maybe it is more interesting.

This film is just one effect after another of mind numbing sequences with the odd flash back. Don't waste your money on this one it's pointless. The only reason it's top of the box office is because of the hype created by the very slick publicity machine. I think the word must be getting out. I went to see this film last night Saturday 5 January 8:30pm, a prime time. There were only 20 people in the showing.

First major disappointment of 2008 :( I had such high hopes for this film, but huge plot gaps (What occurred between his wife and kid taking off in the helicopter and the start point of the film?) stupid leaps of logic, crap monsters and a rubbish plot device about butterflies render this film a mess :( A very poor, yet expensive relation of the vastly superior '28 Days Later'. Oh yeah, and the tacked on happy ending was terrible too. Watch 'The Omega Man' instead.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film, ok so it's hardly original and not a typical Will Smith film, but what were people expecting here; pathos, laughs... it's a zombie film! and better than most recent efforts, the desolation of New York was fantastic, the sense of aloneness and isolation well acted, and not too long with multiple endings like most films these days. Good fun!

By 2012 a man-made pandemic has killed most of the human race and reduced infected survivors to night-stalking monsters. As far as he knows military doctor Robert Neville is the only immune survivor but he keeps working to find a treatment.

I Am Legend is easily the best adaptation of Richard Matheson's dazzling first novel so far but to say so is the definition of faint praise so let's be clear- this is much better than, though, sadly, influenced by, The Omega Man. (To be fair I haven't seen The Last Man On Earth... or heard a good word about it.) Francis Lawrence is a good choice for director- he knows how to wind up the tension and time his shocks and his atmospheric, original take on supernatural horror staples made Constantine much more interesting than it should have been. Will Smith commands attention and sympathy as a man clinging to his humanity, hollow eyed and desperately keeping busy to quash a growing conviction that that humanity doesn't matter any more. It might be Smith's best performance- it's certainly the best element of the film.

Even the monsters are more effective than expected after reading other reviews but they are also the first significant departure from the novel. Matheson developed a rationale for vampirism (and Neville's immunity) spread by bacterial spores and had the undead gathering at night to taunt Neville mercilessly. Here we have a virus genetically engineered to treat cancer becoming infectious and creating mindless “dark-seekers” (hints that they may have some intelligence are undeveloped). It's a nifty idea and I sure as hell wouldn't like to bump into one but lacks the impact of Matheson's myth made real. The further the story develops the further the film departs from the text and the more it misses the point- no spoilers but, when it comes, the justification for the title is feeble.

It would be unfair simply to dismiss this film and recommend the book (though I do recommend the book- very strongly) for there is much to admire. The evocation of a deserted New York with shattered bridges the legacy of a desperate quarantine attempt and bustling streets, familiar to every viewer, now sinister weed strewn canyons of steel and concrete. Flashback scenes of city-wide panic as Manhattan is isolated. Neville lying awake and listening to the nightmare creatures howling outside (even if they aren't vampires). All these elements are bitingly close to the text making the great pity about this film not that it goes wrong but that it does so after getting so much right.

Considered in isolation (which is appropriate) I thought I Am Legend was pretty good and have tried to rate it on that basis. As an adaptation it avoids being a complete balls up, largely thanks to the first half and Will Smith, but is still a disappointment. See it but then do yourself a favour- seek out the book.

Great actor ....good film....bit slow in places but watchable 7/10..

I really enjoyed this and I can't understand how many people disliked it, both the reviews here and my friends who have already seen it. I thought Will Smith held the one-person dialogue really well, and he had me thinking what it would be like to be totally alone (the theme reminded me a lot of Tom Hanks Castaway). His relationship with Sam the dog was very touching, and there were some really sad moments throughout the film as you go through flashbacks to his past when the virus outbreak began. All in all I really liked this, and would definitely recommend it. It's not the usual Will Smith fast-paced action thriller, but it's a really good film in its own right, so don't be too swayed by the critics! Check it out for yourself!

i saw this when it came out on the big screen, i was very dissapointed because i expected a much better movie. i dont know how they made the trailer look so good, this movie felt very long and boring most of the time. i've given it 2 stars coz it did have a couple of good scenes and the CGI were pretty good, it could have been a bit lively and energetic but it was simply dull and will smith looked tired throughout.

The 'empty New York scenes' are amazing and it's worth watching just for this. There are some very scary scenes too that will make you jump. The set up really plays with your imagination and you're never sure what's going to happen next. However, for such a big budget movie the CGI special effects are very poor indeed - the animlas like the lions in the beginning look cheap and like they were done with technology from 5 years ago, not realistic at all, and the same goes for the vampires. The producers should have watched 28 days Later to learn how you make scary characters with some good make up! These guys just lack weight and don't look real, so they are not very scary, and the last 20 minutes are a big letdown. Worth watching though, but can't wait for a proper remake with good scary effects! Also, I recommend reading the book!

Has the person who wrote the synopsis seen this movie? Or read the novel? I guess not. Richard Matheson's 'I Am Legend' dealt with an unidentified disease which turned its victims either into corpses, or into people who thought they were vampires. Maybe they were, maybe they weren't. An interesting book, its key message was 'don't go on holdiay with Richard Matheson'. There was a Vincent Price movie in the fifties which was close to the book, but the story came to public attention as a result of 'The Omega Man' - a new version with Charlton Heston in the eponymous role and with the disease now the result of the Third World War. The trouble with the new version is that it doesn't add anything. The sexual tension of the original is more explicit here, but all the best bits are straight lifts from 'The Omega Man'. Oh, and let's not forget the CGI - the mutants/zombies are pure cartoon, and not in a good way. My advice is to rent the Charlton Heston version.

Very good film, slow to get into but keeps you wanting to know more as you watch.

Very well done. You really could be in a post apocolyptic city and you really felt for the character but... It's only 90 mins long and you come out wondering why they didn't use extra time exploring some philosophical aspects, both of his and perhaps more importantly, the 'Dark Seekers' existance. So although well done, just a tad superficial perhaps? Good but too short.

I first saw this film in the cinema and had no idea what it was going to be about. A few people had told me it was rubbish with a disappointing ending. I disagree though after watching it. Yes there is only one character and his dog for much of the film but that is part of the beauty of the film. It is never boring and has a superb story line. While watching I first thought it was a similar idea to 28 days later although that is purely the idea of the infection turning people into mad things! I would recommend this film

Do I expect too much from films these days? I don't think so. But I expect a film like this, which must have had a bunch of money pumped into it, to deliver. Yes, New York looks suitable empty. Yes, Will Smith gives a winning performance. However, when CGI animators fail, it just ruins it. There are some CGI lions in the early part of this film. I've seen better in The Lion King. Then there are the 'infected'. They are all CGI and look it. They are too far gone from being human to believably be the result of some viral infection. And where are all the bodies or at least the odd rat and cockroach infestation? It's an awfully clean deserted New York. These little points just niggle at you and take away from the movie as a whole. It reminds me of I, Robot. Great idea undermined by the need to big it all up and turn it into a 'Blockbuster'. The dog was good.

So dissapointing, and it could have been so good. There was absolutely no point in naming the film after the book as the title is meaningless in view of the lame hollywood ending.

I really enjoyed watching this movie. Will Smith was at his best in this movie and on acting performance was indeed in par with Tom Hanks in castaway. The movie had its simalarities with castaway and kept you in a thrilling supsence throughout. The movie was well put together and filled with highs and lows. If you think this is yet another of those zombie movies that are all too common at the moment you would be wrong. The only down side to the movie would be that I feel they could have changed the final part of the film or gave it an alternate ending. A great film and master class acting performance by Will Smith. Watch this it great!!

Not quite what I expected but good for all that .

man o man was i looking forward to this one and even second time round I wasnt dissapointed! Will Smith acted his butt off in this exciting, thrilling, action packed adventure of terror, love, grief, horror and pain. The storyline is absolutely thrilling, it builds you up, grabs a hold of you and wacks you in the face!!! I love love love this film. rent it if you like Will Smith, 28 days later, 30 days of night, and prepare to have your socks knocked off 5/5

I can't believe I sat and watched this film all the way through I kept thinking it would get better but it got worse it really is the most boring film I feel I should get my money back!! plus an apology for Will himself.

Ok some may say this film was rubbish? Some may say the Omega Man was more involved and entertaining? I think it is down to personal choice.. First of all imagine being the only person with a rational sensible mind left on the face of the planet, imagine walking around with no one else on the horizon.. Imagine driving down your local street at over 100 miles per hour and wishing there would be a speed cop standing with his speed detector, imagine the tax man not sending any tax return or on the other side of the Atlantic an irs form? Anyway your getting the point, well the ambience of Mr Smith AKA Neville on his own wandering around an empty New York is fantastic the look and feel of an empty city once bristling with life was well done and I have to say made the film more enjoyable for that fact.. Personally, its one of the best films i've seen in years, emotional, gripping, amazingly powerful and one of the few films to make me geniuniley scared at times. A very interesting batman billboard was very noticible when the camera panned round what I assume was time square and made me think? MMMMMMMMMM!! I WONDER? So you might not like I'am Legend, but you have to rent it to find out, its unmissable. The film of a lifetime! PERIOD!!

I was pleasantly surprised by this film. I love such movies as 28 days later/dawn of the dead etc - and have always enjoyed them for what they were - but was never moved by them. I am not ashamed to say that I cried twice in this film, and when it was over I felt sad. I think that because we were focussing in on one person you could really get to care about them. The reason I didn't give the movie a higher score was that the 'infected' people kind of looked like they had been overworked with the CGI effects and weren't very real looking. If you like 'zombie' films you should give this a try, I think you too will be pleasantly surprised - it isn't your typical blood and guts film (be advised) - but it is a very good watch.

Loved the dog, thought she(?) put in an Oscar-worthy performance. Pity about everything else in this poor American attempt to do 'dark apocalyptic'. Bizarre in that a film filled with clearly massive budget-backed striking imagery, there's one image that sticks in my mind. Except perhaps of the dog.

This film didn't compel me to visit the cinema to part with £10 to see a film but when it arrived from LF i was quite glad. And glad i remained even after watching the film. Will Smith undoes the damage caused by such stinkers as Independence day and also being best mates with Tom Cruise by coming into his own as an actor. Smith (Neville) is the only remaining man left in New York after a mutated virus set to cure cancer wrecks havoc upon the city and eventually the world. With only his dog Sam to keep him company Neville builds himself a fortress to protect him from the mutants outside who are photosensitive and eat anything that moves. All the while he desperatly tries to cure the virus. The director has really captured what it would be like to go years without other human contact and this is portrayed excellently by Smith when he develops relationships with mannequins. Going slowly mad and desperate for that human touch all Neville has is his faithful dog Sam to keep him company. And i have to add at this point that the dog was an amazing actor in her own right. The only down point and the main thing that keeps the film from earning a 5 star rating is the use of CGI for the mutants. When will Hollywood learn that too much use of CGI doesn't lift the film in fact it spoils it! The use of a great make up artist would have benefited this film far more and would have made the mutants appearance much more scary as its hard to be afraid of a computer image. As well as an actor doea by acting against an CGI image it would have been far more terrifying to have Neville truly scared of the actor/character he was acting alongside. But that aside it doesn't ruin the film. Also a big mention to the music that really lifts the energy and tension of this film. And a great little juxtaposition at the end with Bob Marley playing out the end credits. All in all a worth while venture and a great evenings entertainment made even better by the fact the Smith is picking better films recently (Pursuit of happyness is also a must see but for different reasons)

This is a brilliant film, the best parts are simply will smith and his dog. This film proves what an amazing actor will is.

Not as deeply unsettling as The Omega Man but a jump out of your seat shocker Will Smith is very good in these type of movies and the feeling of loneliness pervades the film, we all think it would be fun to have the run of a city but not for long. The only gripes that I have with the movie is the villan British yet again I am sure the Americans can mess things up on there own and the final shot all a little to perfect but thats is the way with most American movies all in all I enjoyed the film very much.

this was a great film- i think it is will smith's best to date

when i got this film i expected quite a lot after all that i had heard and to be honest after the first 15 minutes i was getting disappointed but then the film sprung to life and the best started coming out of will smith. the film was not too complicated and easy to follow and the ending superb.

If it hadn't been Will Smith then maybe it had only got 3 or possibly 4 stars. But i actually enjoyed the film, i'd give the acting of Will Smith a big 10 out of 10, would definately watch it again!

Brill film well played by Smith, shows a bleak future for mankind, gives a 'Wat if?' factor to the movie. A great watch with a few unexpected scares.

Brilliant film, loved every secomd of it.

I watched the movie before reading the book and to me they are two different stories, the concept is the same, sort of, but both are excellent in their own way. If you like the idea of a guy left alone in a city surviving (like 28 days later) then you'll love this, i like the way NY is overgrown with weeds and animals run free. In all a good enjoyable movie.

I like Will Smith anyway after Independence Day + BELL AIR. If you liked 28 DAYS LATER,DAWN OF DEAD,etc,you'll love this. I found it more scary than them,and more in the league of DESCENT actually. When he goes into a dark building and they come to life,to do what they do best,eat people,then its a cross between BLAIR WITCH + DESCENT. I loved the car at beginning he drives to kill kangaroos for experimenting i guess! Its a good story,great acting,great stunts and compelling watch. Nuff said!

Will Smith is extremely good in this movie.. funny at times, tough others... really good idea, and really well done! I would have watched it over and over... if I had time!

As usual, WS puts in a strong performance. It's always good to see such a talented actor doing something a little more thoughtful than straight up action, although he's get's the job done whatever a role demands. Some reviewers have criticised the film for being too slow or not scary enough, but I think they must have a distinct problem with empathy. His situation is truly horrifying. I do agree with criticism that the CGI was a bit overdone with regards to the infected 'zombies', and that the ending was rather rushed. I could also have done without the religious overtones towards the end, but that's a very personal thing I suppose. Nevertheless, this is still a good movie with terrific central performances from WS and the dog. 4 stars.

It was pretty good action story with a moral - kind of like an after school special but with Will Smith!

Having watched the Omega man, we wondered how this new version would measure up, and on the whole we thought it was good. The effects were a bit distracting, but Will Smith was excellent. How exactly he managed to keep all that tech stuff in his apartment though we will never know! Still, thought provoking and scary, worth watching.

Even though i am not a fan of scary movies - i found this film very, very gripping and enjoyable! i thought that it was a brilliant film and a definate must see! All though there is only one character, played by will smith, for most of the movie, not forgetting the dog, i did not find it boring at all and i think that it was a credit to will smith A brilliant film - if you have not seen it already rent it and give it a go, you wont be disappointed'

Good story, i thought a cure for cancer was too good to be true. Will Smith was very good in probably his strongest acting role to date. Liked the way they created an empty New York City. Recommended.

What a great film very good right from the start.

I wasn't sure what to expect with this film but found it really engrossing. It was a bit predictable in places but that didn't ruin the movie. I am a big fan of horror movies and this was quite scary at times. I therefore give it 4 stars.

I love Will Smith and he looks superfit in this film!!!! I did enjoy the film but found the story quite weak. Not their fault as it was based on a book. Watchable but I had seen it at the flicks but teenagers wanted to see it.

Let's face it, this is a Will Smith franchise film. Like previous Scfi / CGI movie i Robot, this film is a much more gripping tale. Without the blantant product placement i may add. In fact, it is worthy of top drawer category status. Smith carries the film and no surprise as in this film he is a doctor involved in finding a cure for the mutations that have overtaken humanity on a near complete scale. I enjoyed the plot and i found the smart editing helped in explaining leading events to Manhattan island being cut off due to the epideric raging through New York city population. I loved the realtionship betwen Smith's character and his pet dog. That dog serves a gong for his/her acting. Well worth a watch. Pure escapism.

A very good and nicely made film indeed. I saw the original Vincent Price movie before I saw this (actually only a month before this -- surprising really). So I knew roughly the story and how the film might end. This didn't spoil it for me though because the special effects were so superior (obviously) and helped carry the film forward. Well recommended viewing). And actually a somewhat happier ending than the Vincent Price film.

This is a 28 weeks later but with a more expensive budget. Will Smith is good in this film and does play a believable character. Some of the CGI is a little poor but it doesn't let the film down too much.

If you have heard varied reports on this film, don't listen and watch it for yourselves. I found the film brilliant and I'm pleased that I never took any notice of the negative reviews I had heard. The zombie like people weren't the best I've seen but the rest of the film took certainly madeup for that. Well worth watching, get the popcorn

I watched it twice and I still got scared the second time.

It makes me laugh when i read some other reviews that people leave, they often seem to be either watching a different film to me, or would appear to be studying on the film so hard that maybe they actually miss whats happening because they are trying to think of clever things to write about in this review section. For me, this was a good film, good acting from Will Smith, good cinematogrpahy, not bad storyline. I watch films for pleasure in my free time, I like to lose myself and think of nothing whilst watching it, this achieves that

Although great raport between the Doc and Sam (his dog), the film lacked pace in parts and was horrifying in others. I don't see why this is only a 15, the sub-human species is truly creepy (esp. as they are so very nearly human). I was really looking forward to watching this and kind of did... but too close to horror for me.

Some people are put off by too many effects, ignore them as a film buff this film 'Omega Man' haunted me as a teen.If I was the last man alive what would I do ????? Smith brings more to the narrative for me than Charlten Heaston 'you dirty ape' did in the previous film good job Will. Not seen the alternate ending but as the ending suited Smith as a Hollywood hero, and all round nice guy. The alternate ending may suit the story better.... : )

What a massive disappointment. Having seen rave reviews for it i thought it would be a good film however this film is DULL. The last film i saw that was this bad was The Hulk (first re-make with Eric Bana). Only saving grace is Sam the dog who manages to act the pants off everybody else.

over rated but worth a watch

i thought this film was really good. if your not into comlicated storylines, and like a good scare then you should enjoy it. and will smith is a bonus, the man is a sexy beast!!

So much promise, and most of the movie certainly lived up to this, but the last quarter sank to the plotline we've all seen a hundred times before. You just KNEW what would happen, and sigh.......of course he had to get killed off in the end. Can't they ever come up with something original. Frankly could have written the script for the last 20 minutes myself, and was just waiting for the obvious to happen. 3 stars because it's not all bad, but it's disappointing in the end - and sorry but the final minute had me reaching for the bucket and the off switch in equal standing.

Weak and flawed plotlines aren't especially unusual in action-packed blockbusters, and this was no exception. If you like lots of flashy effects regardless of characterisation, dialogue or plot, you might like this film. I didn't. Was this film funded by Creationists or other fundamental Christians? Without wanting to spoil it, it very heavy-handedly pushes Christianity as the only possible solution and Science is once again cast as the bad guy. Poor old Science.

Starts off really well, scary enough to need a cushion over your eyes but tacks on God at the end. I'm afraid you can see the joins.

Always good in action movies Will Smith was a great choice for this film. Fast paced and scary with some funny lines thrown in. The infected are quite frightening and the graphics are good. The psycological impact of being the only uninfected survivor in a city that size is very briefly touched upon, but I guess that would have made it a completely different film altogether - if you enjoy fast paced and fairly predictable action thrillers, then you'll enjoy I am Legend, cos I did!

Ive seen Will in Pursuit of Happyness, a proof of how a great and talented actor he is. This movie is another proof of how amazing he is in his craft. As a testament to the fact that I thoroughly liked this movie is after renting it I bought the DVD for collection as well. You could feel the eeriness of how it feels to be the only man left on earth. The pacing was very good. I like watching horror flicks as long as their is hope in the end.

I have to say I was thoroughly disappointed by this film -- it seemed to have so much to offer but ended up lacking most things. The plot was cerebrally interesting but Hoolywood weak at the same time, there were numerous story holes and the ending was downright disappointing. The action scenes were a lot of fun though and there is a truly emotional scene in the film that you have to credit Will Smith for. Also, the CGI folks have to commended for making New York look deserted and overrun with vegetation. None of this though detracted from what was effectively a weak film.

When we got this a friend of mine said, 'awesome film', but I will be re-checking to see if I misheard and see if she actually said, 'awful film'. Weak plot, pathetic CGI 'monsters' and poor ending. Truly disappointing.

I was really looking forward to watching this film due to the clips seen in the cinema / web with loads of action. But the film did lack action I think it is the usual showing all the action from the film in a 2 minute clip to advertise the film. However saying that I did enjoy it! It showed how the relationship between Will Smith and Sam (the dog) and how much being on his own he depended on the dog. It was touching between the characters when Sam died. So from that aspect of the film very good. Original story and shows a 'what if' scenario and what could happen if we mess about to much with medicine! Well worth the watch!

I will start by saying if you have seen '28 days later' you wont enjoy this film this, i am legend was basically a american version with a wonderful actor to get the money in. On plus side if you havn't seen 28 days later and dont plan to or not a fan of horror films i would probably recommend the film it has its tense moments, it will make you think specailly for all the media on scientfic research at the moment and lets be honset its got will smith in it. 2 stars is all i could give to this film as its all been done before and done better

the glossy trailer for this promised a great film. what a let down.very weak story line.might have been o.k as a 30 mins twilight zone,but not a feature film. the only bonus was the gorgeous will smith.

I really enjoyed this film Will Smith does make a very good movie. Having seen the trailer at the cinema I thought I knew what to expect but I was wrong. I didn't realise it was going to be quite so gory in places but overall an excellent story that kept you entertained with a good ending that didn't leave me disappointed.

This film is okay, but there are too many flaws in it and you are left with too many questions at the end, so much so, that you wonder why he just didn't drive to the colony in the first place! There are a few jumpy parts, but nothing that particularly scared me. Wouldn't exactly call it a thriller! Glad I didn't waste my money watching this in the cinema, but okay for something easy to watch on a Friday night.

wat started out from a promising start, this will smith feature turned out be really really disappointing. poor climax, story line ok, very slow, special effects ok. out acted by the dog. load of rubbish. im a will smith fan, this one by far my least fav.

My partner wanted to rent this film; it's not my type of genre. Within 20 mins of the film starting, I had lost interest and left him to watch the rest. After 30 mins he had lost interest and switched it of. A real shame as I have liked most of Will Smith's movies. It was slow starting and dull.

I had very high expectations of this film - Excellent trailers, exciting concept and Mr smith who rarely disappoints - but there is aways a first time... The premise of this book turned film offering is that a cure has been found for the big C, unfortunately (as usual in these situations) when you mess with Mother Nature she turns around and bites you, and it emerges that the cure is unstable and becomes an airborne pathogen that turns its victims into slathering, rabid golum type adaptations of the human race intent on killing and eating anything that gets in thier way - although they are photophobic so it helps if you don't go out in the dark. Our hero is (of course) naturally immune to the disease and being that he is also very conveniently a super scientist his self elected mission is to a) find any other survivors and b) find a cure which he does by catching mutated human subjects and testing self developed vaccines on them. It should be great, but it misses the mark on so many levels and Smith, who is on his own for a large proportion of the film, just doesn't have the depth of acting ability or directorial scope to explore his very limited character enough to hold your interest. By the time the film has some much needed life injected into it you simply don't care. The hero is just not heroic enough, the vilians are not monsterous enough (the CG is patchy) and the main love interest appears to be an alsatian! one to probably skip unless you really are a will smith fan, and even then you could do better. Definately not legendary.

I saw this film at the cinema which was spectacular but I found it just as good on DVD, full of action with some edge of the seat moments......Brill.

Will Smith is great and seeing him be Will Smith is enjoyable. So is seeing NY devoid of people and with nature and wild animals taking a foot hold. The effects are good and the dog is cool but the rest of it sucks, the ending is terrible and the Charlton Heston version at least gets closer to the book.

I liked it but needed a lot more to keep me going throughout the film. The money saved on expensive cast and extras could have been spent on better special effects, as the CGI was pretty poor to say the least, especially of the zombies / vampires or whatever they were. The heavy breathing was funny. Worth a watch but don't expect too much.

A good film with excellent special effects but it did make us jump in places. i found it a little hard to follow but on the whole it was good.

'Good' is a..erm....good...word to describe this film. I rented it expecting it to be rubbish but entertaining but what I found was far more than this. I think Will Smith gives one of his best performances if not the best performance of his career here. He's a sympathet and lonely character that you feel sorry for. What was most effecting was how they didn't paint him as some sort of superman but a scared and desperate individual obviously in a state of absolute grief. The relationship with Sam the dog is also very well done it is more like father and child than owner and pet. I'm a little ashamed to say that I had a lump in my throat a couple of times in this film. What lets down the film is the truly terrible cgi which is so odd! A film like this should be a ble to do fantastic cgi but it actually looks like extras from Resident Evil on the old Playstation 1, why not just use real actors instead of this rubbish??? Fortunately it can be forgiven thanks to Smith's great performance. Its hard to say what film this is like, all I'll say is that if you like your action films with some heart and soul then you should like this. A surprising treat!

There’s effectual use of CGI early on to immaculately portray a forsaken Manhattan, but I Am Legend, like the bulk of today’s conventional Hollywood pictures, sadly stoops to superfluous computer game psychosis towards the closing stages. An imitative but nonetheless engaging premise and a solid central performance from Will Smith entertain throughout, but the unpersuasive and inapt special effects cheapen the experience and ultimately distance the viewer from an otherwise efficient apocalyptic horror.

I was suprised how much I enjoyed this film as it only had one actor pretty much all the way through. The action scenes are quite good and it shows how good Will Smith is. But the ending is so rushed that just when it is getting better it ends.

When I saw the trailer, i thought it looked interesting and intriguing to watch. I was proved wrong, Will Smith was the only good thing in the film, and the dog. But the rest, not only was it depressing but also sad. The ending was unpredictable and I would have preferred for a better happier one. I would not bother to rent this film out, as the content is really rubbish.

I enjoyed it but i don't know why. The ending saved it for me. Up to then it had all been a bit odd and a bit 'so what'. Nice to see the Fresh Prince change direction a bit and not be such a world saving hero - well, ish. Half an hour longer than it needed to be and the start was confusing if stunning visually. But good stuff.

The new version of I AM LEGEND is not a bad film. It has been made before in the early 1970's as a kind of blaxpoitation film with Charlton Heston and Anthony Zerbe. This new version has WILL SMITH as the last man on Earth, thankfully SMITH does not do his usual routine here, but gives a more measured performance like he did in ALI. Much of the time he is alone with his dog, and there is a very real sense of danger and erie-ness, especially when SMITH is caught hanging upside down by a tripwire and the sun begins to set. The darkseeker zombies are less impressive though - bad CGI. Scenes where SMITH goes into a videostore and plays golf standing on the wing of an aeroplane are less successful and just boring. The opening sequences of the film owes much to TWELVE MONKEYS (1995) where wild animals can be seen running amok in the city. Also, it is very similar to Danny Boyle's '28 DAYS LATER...' - but that was a better film.

Very well made, with good effects. Very similar to The Omega Man (Charlton Heston) and 28 Days Later. Enjoyable to watch.

If you've seen the trailers for this, hold up, its not as good as you think it might be. The fairly stunning scenes of an overrun-with-nature New York don't fill up the movie as much as it appears. Will Smith does well in a really solitary role, effectively being one man alone fighting to cure the 'unclean' around him. The title of the film effectively comes from how they see him, but that's never brought out in the storyline. And, as with many films, we get a relatively heroic/'happy' ending which leaves you fairly unsatisfied. But, plus points - good action sequences, some decent acting from Smith (even with just a dog to play off) and some genuinely jump-out-the-seat-moments. You just get the feeling that they could have done so much better with the base material, but as this is the third time they have tried to film the source novel, I'm thinking its time to give it up.

I watched it with my Wife and she gave it 1 out of 10. Personally, I think it has a few good moments and is worth 3 out of 10. Why so bad? Pointing it bluntly...it's boring. Will Smith puts in a good effort but the storyline is useless. My advice....avoid :(

This was a thumping good story with no let up on the suspense and Will Smith was, as always, fantastic!

I am Legend is a good film but not a great film. I felt I had seen this all before and although Will Smith put in a good performance - I would not be in a great rush to watch this again.

This film takes a while for the acting and story line to kick off, was very boring at first....but after the long wait it started to be really enjoyable never mind watchable...Good ending though so its worth that long wait.

it started slowly but quicky built momentum as it introduced a few surprises along the way. Will Smith did a straight role well

Brill film with scares and fab acting by Will Smith

i really enjoyed this a very good enjoyable film.

Like a few other people, we were looking forward to watching this film, but ended up a little disappointed with it. Will Smith is usually top notch, but somehow this role did not suit him or his style, but that have just been the lifeless storyline of the film. There was very good special fx throughout, and I suppose most people will see this at least once, but once was enough for us...

After renting I bought the dvd as its a film I could keep watching especially with friends who haven't already seen it. I found it scary, lots of suspense, and pretty believable.

Did Mr. Smith really sign up for this movie? It was just a load of special effects with him adding some quirky lines! Got the plot sorted from the outset and it was all so hyped up - not really a great movie unless you like zombies eating and shreaking all the time. Sorry pretty naff!

Smithy must ae worked out a bit for this one. Very good suspense enjoyed it a lot although the CGI was clunky in places

I really enjoyed this film, I love Will Smith and it is very rare that he does anything wrong in my eyes. It was so cool seeing Manhattan deserted and so hard to comprehend what it would really be like to be on your own like that, no wonder that he was so close to his dog - that was one of the things I didn't like however, there was no need to do that to the dog, that was horrible. Another thing was that I think the Special FX could have been better in relation to the monsters, they really were not that good and I think it might have been better to use real people (the monsters in 28 days are far more scary!) But overall, a very enjoyable watch, I've heard there is an alternative ending available, I might just have to buy it to see!

the film is not what you expected but your love it or hate it

This was a good idea that had too many plot holes to make it thoroughly satisfying. Where did all his electricity come from and how come the zombies.................see what i mean.

Violence, heartbreak and an actor that hold the film on his own for 85% of the film is really great. Girls look out for some really sad bits.

Will Smith or his charactor, who was the Legned? as always Smith made the film a film worth watching. Brilliantly satisfying to watch (twice) minus the referal to God which did take away some of the enjoyment for people like myself who are not religious. I reccomend this for anyone who wants to thoroughly enjoy a film night in with action, violence, comedy and a satisfying ending ( that being the official one not the added bonus ending that is worthless to the films title and meaning ).

I was expecting more from this film and was a little disappointed with it, I am a fan of Will Smith and although I did enjoy it somewhat I thought it was a bit disjointed and left questions as to the background of the present day situation.

A really strange scenario and found it a bit slow at times. Will Smith is great as he always is! Glad I watched it but it was quite dreary and depressing.

I still prefer Charlton Hestons version but this was a good Film keeping up with the modern times with cinema effects.

I had heard mixed reviews from friends who had seen this film at the cinema and felt cheated by the end. I have to say my husband and I loved the movie. Jumpy in the right places and loads of tension created by Will Smith and the dog (who is the true star of the movie!!!!) I suppose I watched it not expecting much because of my friends opinions and perhaps this may have had an effect on why actually I was pleasantly surprised... Enjoy

Will Smith played a great part. A bit too far fetched and predictable. The dog also played a good part and was very well trained. Well worth the watch even though I only gave it three stars.

Average film. Like others I agree effects are good but don't really add up to much enjoyment or the point of the film. Not much of a storyline.

Ah where do i start with this one. The writers have done a fairly good job of adapting a difficult book to the big screen, unfortunately they just didn't know when to stop messing with the original material, screwing up the ending and and consequentially, completely missing the whole point of the entire film. The last 5 minutes is such a massive disappointment and i'd strongly advise watching the alternative ending which is closer to the original idea.

I was watching this with my 7 year old son and had to turn it off almost immediately as it scared him too much. I love Will Smith but this film was a bit too uncomfortable for me.

If you have never seen the omega man with charlton heston then you will enjoy this version with will smith but i do suggest you check out the original with charlton heston i think you will understand the film more.

First half of this is amazing - eerily silent new york and will smith all alone -brilliant and then like a rampaging godzilla destroying the film comes the monster that is CGI- theres nothing wrong with CGI when well done and well placed but here it sucks big time - just make the bad guys people with make up on i.e 28 weeks later, numerous zombie films etc - so much more scary than these pixalated plonkers- ruined a good film for me.

I am Legend rolls rather like 28 days later meets castaway… and considering how long this f*cker has been in gestation is only a partial success, due to a botched 3rd act in which the script gutlessly bottles on its convictions. Will Smith seems to be constantly running away from ropey looking CGI freaks doesn’t he? These cartoonishly bloodless computer concocted vampires are a only a touch more convincing than the weightless green screen spectres he faced in the in angry apple mac donkey flick irobot. They seem to have inherited that lantern jawed gurn that the monsters out of the mummy and its dreadful sequel had… But despite its flaws there is much here to like, for the first hour each scene literally throbs with doomed menace. seriosuly for the first 2/3rds the film was so tense that my girlfriend looked fit to chew off her own fist. The totally deserted post apocalyptic new york is an eerie wonder to behold, and will smith is absolutely great as Robert Neville the last man on earth struggling to cure the monsters lurking in the shadows around him whilst grappling with his own failing sanity. One scene in which Smith breaks down and pleads a shop floor dummy to talk to him is both deeply creepy and powerfully bleak. Considering that this is directed by the chap who gave us the bombastic catholic comic book flick constantine for the most part I am Legend is remarkably grown up. Despite the iffy vamps the sparingly used action set pieces are corking keep the beasts moving intimidatingly fast and shrieking and everything is fine. So yeah… cartoonish beasts and a tad sh!tty for the last half hour, which is a shame as otherwise I am legend is pretty sweet.

Dr. Robert Neville (Will Smith) is the last survivor of a deadly plague that wipes out the entire population of the Earth. What's left of the infected roam the night like vampires feeding off any living thing they find. With only his dog, Sam, for company he keeps himself busy during the day by wandering the streets of a deserted Manhattan and endlessly trying to find a cure for the disease. It all sounds quite familiar and Danny Boyle's cult classic '28 Days Later' comes instantly to mind however, any comparisons to that film is a tall order indeed. 'I Am Legend' is by no means a copycat film though, in fact it is an adaptation of a '50's science fiction novel of the same title. The suspense and tension in the first hour of the film is typical of Hollywood Blockbusters with over-use of sudden shock tactics, which may work the first time but soon wear thin. Smith's depiction of a man devoid of human contact is also somewhat contrived. Despite all this the first part of the film is actually the most enjoyable, if you can ignore the CG work, which irritates from the very first scene and gets progressively worse when the vampires show their faces. If you're looking for your typical Will Smith blockbuster (complete with topless exercising and reckless driving scenes) then you won't go far wrong but just don't expect a clever script, engaging dialogues or any psychological suspense, which other post-apocalyptic zombie movies offer so well.

Firstly - to the people who have written reviews that give away parts of the plot or clever little things in the film: USE THE SPOILER TICK BOX YOU M0RONS. OK - on to the movie. Well it had huge potential being based on a classic novel of the same name. There was limitless scope for another one-man-handling-solitude film (like Castaway), and in this department Will Smith certainly doesnt disappoint. He is believable as the last man on Earth and some scenes of his inevitable breakdown are very powerful. The co-star deserves a mention too. Theres been a lot of talk over the dog, and yes its a clever beastie that plays well off Smith. Animal lovers will adore this film. The dog is impossibly cute. Film good points: CGI for NY wasteland is very impressive. It would have had more impact if the camera angles, play on sound etc hadn't been totally recognizable as being ripped from 28 Days Later (which did a much better job to be honest) but its amazing to see. Will Smith. Brilliant performance. The whole virus idea. In the book it was intelligent vampires. I'm not sure why they changed it, but the virus thing works well. Bad Points: Mutants who attack like American Footballers. In very poor CGI. WHY? Intelligent vampires have become mindless mutants. Where was the clever interplay between the last man and the vampire horde? How are you going to show that they are as afraid of him as he is of them? Wait...don't tell me you're going to change the ending! NO - that was the best bit! They changed the ending. WHY! The ending was what MADE the book. It was a clever twist on the normal genre, a subtle social critique on mankind affect on the World. Why would anyone change it following Will Smiths brilliantly dark performance? If ever a film needed a dark ending, it was this one. Ahh well. Better luck with your next remake, Hollywood. Perhaps Romeo and Juliet, but this time they both live? Idiots....

The best thing about the Movie is that it's fairly short. It's an old familiar tale. Man (or in this case a woman) creates a virus, it gets out, kills people and turns the rest into VERY angry canibals. Sound familar? Of course it does we've been here before with 28 days later, a man alone in a seemingly empty city.Will Smith plays a brilliant doctor, immune from the virus, trying to find a cure. He walks through an empty, strangly unspooky, New York, talking to shop dummies and hunting deer. At night Will battens down steel shutters as out come the 'Dark seekers' , the previously mentioned canibals with anger issues. But this movie has no real tension, a very slight plot, few chills and little action. There is nothing here to mark this film out from others in the genre, no twists, no new ideas. In '28 Days Later' there was tension, grit and some gruesome encounters with the Canibals, but also a touch of dark wit. You'll find none of that here. I won't be getting the DVD. Oh, and by the way in these Zombie/angry canibal movies, why don't they ever attack each other, just the 'normal' people? Just a thought.

Well made film and very atmospheric with some good acting from Mr Smith but also very slow moving...my other half was expecting a nice hollywood action/machismo type movie and was yawning and complaining 75% of the time. Also could have given character a little more of a background and more involvement from the great Emma Thompson. Oh and personally i hate movies where they kill off the dog.... Overall, good film but expect to feel fairly depressed afterwards.

i started reading the book when it came out when i finished i saw it in the cinima big disapointment too much cgi work and will smith plays a 40 to 50 year old man who at one point in the movie for no reason is doing pull ups with a muscle bound buff body no point ttoo much cgi use some puppet work the decent style mask work was what i was hoping and i ending up watching too much CGI like in king kong i love will smith movies but i felt so let down

i sat till the end! very soso cgi driven vehicle,that i thought would be a two & a half hour job, however it ran at a very neat one hour thirty,in a way i felt glad as there was many parts that i could have shouted at the screen,like the crap crawling back to the car scene,just get up & hop for gods sake.do yourself a favour watch the omega man instead

I don't mind CGI when it looks good, and it usually doesn't. But I hate to admit that New York looked great in this film. Will Smith's character was interesting enough, particularly about how he copes with his own loneliness and sanity: The mannequins creeped me out more than the zombies! Other than the above comments, though, the story was pretty much nil, and the ending was absolutely NOTHING! A twist ending to an otherwise bland storyline would have been better in this case. As many other reviewers have said: 28 Days Later may have a smaller budget, but is definitely better. This is worth a look though if you like a decent apocalypse.

All the build up for this movie had me salivating at the thought at watching this visual spectacle..... new york as it has never been seen, a city in wilderness, one mand and his dog the extreme version!! Again the build up has left much to be desired....as tends to be the case so much in the modern cinema era!!!! So whats the problem, well for me it is the city visuals are awesom, totally breath taking. it really is as you have never seen New York before..... The Baddies, 'the nightwalkers', WHY was the decision to make these COMPLETELY CG i have no idea....a MASSIVE, needless mistake. it took away from the supposed fear of these poor creatures. they where almost laughable. the Script / screenplay.......at the end of the film, i turned to my friends and we all made the same gesture...the one of the shrugging shouders and the 'eh' sound....it left too much to be answered and you are expected to find the answers out yourself with snippets of flashbacks. an example is what was he doing in the missing three years in the film. how did he ready his house in such a way without the protection he has after three years, but more importantly HOW does the human body become so changed to enable it to make a noise that reverberates around the city and distort its own body, or become a climber that spiderman would be envious off?? Will Smith is very good in the film, the moment with sam his dog is incredibly touching and i was genuinly moved with it....more so becuase she reminded me of mine!! But it is after this incident that Will smith shows a good turn of acting and deserves to be praised. I would recommend seeing this film on the big screen, i saw it on the IMAX but trust me it isnt necassary to see it on that, but just be prepared for the visualsto far outweigh the content!! to say that i saw a 6 minute preview of 'The Dark Knight' before the movie...that left me mofre excited that I AM LEGEND....oh god i hope im not dissaointed again!!!!!!!!!!!1

What could have been a Jaw Dropper ends up being an average execution of an intriguing story. Films like this Live or Die by there CGI and on that basis I am Legend flat lines,The zombies/vamps are ropey and the Cars look like they are floating when drivng down the street, but Smith works hard and pulls off an engaging performance as the last Man on Earth. It's not Smith's best film, but It's worth a look

Firstly, I will admit that the only reason I went to see this (at the IMAX, no less) was to see 'The Dark Knight' prologue. Having paid the admission however, I thought I may as well stay, as I like post-apocalypse films and I like Will Smith. Having heard very half-hearted feedback on this film, I went in with low expectations, and was ultimately pleasantly surprised. Yes, the CGI is pretty patchy at times, and yes, we get WAY too many close-ups on the infected humans (when when *when* will they learn that it's the unseen which terrifies us so? The scene where Robert Neville (Smith) follows Sam the dog into the dark building, and the glimpses of what he encounters there, is countless times more tense than any of the roaring zombie-vampire shots). Despite all this, to say I wasn't entertained would be a lie. I jumped a lot, cried (dog lovers beware!) and thought Smith more than capable of carrying the film practically all on his own. Things do get a little cloying as the plot develops, and the ending is a bit of a let-down, somehow. But the scenes of a desolate and overgrown New York coupled with Smith's charisma save this film from being a complete waste of time.

Will Smith gives a good performance in this film. The film, unfortunately, doesn't live up to that performance. Put plainly, it's boring. Nothing happens for the first hour. We just follow him around a deserted NY city and he makes sure he's in before dark. There are flashbacks which go to before the desolation, when the outbreak of this new virus was just happening, but these don't satisfy us at all for pacing or for payout as to what actually happened to his family (although you can guess). He only actually meets another human being half way through the film. By then he is half insane and the nasties now know where he lives and they are coming to get him. So what?!! By this time I was hoping they would get him, kill him and I could go home. The Zombies (I don't care what anyone says, they ARE zombies) are simply the worst CGI I've seen in the last 20 years. I've seen better zombies in Playstation games than these. There also seems to be one main one who is more aggressive and more intelligent than the others, although why he is we don't know. In fact, why Will Smith is solely responsible for trying to find a cure for this virus is a mystery also. All in all this is an uneven, uneventful and unfullfilling film which ruined my Saturday night. Watch 28 Days Later instead - at least it's not boring.

This film has some great moments, and Will Smith does a pretty good job....not all actors could hold our interest so well when theyre the only ones on the screen. However, what starts out as an interesting, relatively subtle drama switches about half way through and becomes yet another cliched ridiculous attempt to liven up the pace. The ending is pretty poor too and doesnt seem to sit well with he rest of the film. I was also distracted through this entire film by the thought that Ive seen this all before, only better. If you want a decent Zombie movie, watch 28 Days later. The amazing empty city scenes in this movie, whilst great in their own right, just remind me of the even more stunning empty london scenes in the aforementioned british horror. Worth a look, definitely, but its no classic.

Will Smith is now a big star and as a result, you can expect any film that he is now in will have plenty of money invested in it. this however does not necessarily make a good film. The idea of the film is good. It is well put together. Will does a good job of keeping you interested. The main problem is that it is a film of two halves. The first half is good and the second half is not. This is a film for Will Smith fans and those who desperately want to see an apocolypse film.

I had high hopes for this film but it was a real let down. The people who became infected turned into crazed CGI figures, whats up with that, it looked so fake. Nothing great really happened, just looked like a typical zombie film, with the added emotional element that will smith was all alone with his dog. There were a few good bits, but really it just looked too fake you couldn't take it seriously. The original story was completely lost and replaced by an overdone special effects team, innappropriate for the story and totally aimed at the computer game generation. Worth a look, definately not worth buying.

'I Am Legend' is just an 'ok' movie. I'd heard a lot from friends that this is a must-see, Will Smith is awesome, the special effects are incredible, etc. With the exception of Will Smith, all these aspects of this film are very mediocre - the CGI is jerky, the creatures are more irritating than scary. Now, I've singled out Will Smith. If the other aspects of the movie are just 'ok', Will is simply disappointing. Yes, it's largely a one-man show for 2/3 of the movie and I'm sure that's difficult. However, even the flashback segments seem to have Will sleepwalking through his role. It's only in the last 30 min that he seems to wake up and show a spark of life. It's not all bad. The story is pretty good, and the script is decent. This felt like it could have been a pretty good film with a small number of tweaks. Had the mutants not been schlocky horror-film cast offs; had the CGI been better quality; had the director created an atmosphere of intensity throughout the movie rather than just in the last 30 min; had Will put his heart into his role... ...they didn't, though, and it shows.

This did not live up to expectations. It's worth watching when nothing else is on the the telly but a not as good as all the hyped up publicity made out. If you do miss it don't worry too much..... because 'I AM BORED'. Very Slow film overall with much too little action and gaps in between while you wait for something to happen. Will Smith has done much better than this. The dog was the real star.

Heard a lot of good things leading up to the release of this film. Have always liked Will Smith , but the story line let the whole film down, it was very slow, even during the action sceens, glad i never bought it as i would have regreted it.

There was so much hype when this film came out, I expected a whole lot more. Will Smith, as usual delivered a good performance, but his co-star, Sam the dog stole the show. The film is worth a watch, as the ending was not as predictable as I thought. However, it's not a film I will watch again.

I give this 3 stars for Will Smiths performance and the story which is good enough to have been filmed 3 times now (though plot holes abound). In many ways this was an enjoyable action sci-fi and could on some levels be compared to 28 Days Later. However, why they decided to use poor CGI to represent the 'infected' is a total mystery to me. Had they used real people and make up (like 28 Days Later) this would have been far more effective and could have been quite chilling. What we got though was some of the worst CGI monsters I have ever seen and that totally ruined it for me.

I am legend takes a very ambitious idea if unorginal and recreates it in a cliched and submissive manner. The cutting of corners, for example when will smith is upturned in a car and suddenly is lying on a sofa,all patched up. Or more importantly how the 'virus' spread and turned everyone into mutant zombies? And the painfuly unsatisfying and diluted ending. However the action sequences and presence of the entertaing Smith cover up most of the massive holes in the story, and actually make for some decent popcorn viewing. Overall, worth a punt for a mindless bash. Turn the lights off, and its quite chilling in places.

Hmmm so i got this through and watched it nearly straight away i was that excited to see Mr. Smiths latest outing, sadly this was more Wild Wild west than I-Robot. I have seen the Omega man and that is a lot better interpretation of the book than this one, Smith's performance is as sound as everthe film just left too many open questions and sadly the ending is weak.........Uber-weak. Nice animation and some eerie shots of a deserted Manhattan (Wierdly not as good as the ones in the devil's advocate though) wortha watch but i am glad i didnt buy it.

OK the threat is not from zombies. These people are alive but affected and guess what? They do not like the daylight. One man is 'normal'. Will he survive? Do you care? I didn't.

The film is disappointing, it never gets going. What ever you expect from a 'Legend' you will not get. The plot is a simple one, everybody dead but him and his dog, and he is working on a cure for the livingdead. Very rare that i offer to make a cup of tea when watching a film!!

Right from the off it was obvious the car was a CGI model and not the real thing. It wasn't badly done, but I initially felt as though I was waching a video game. In this day and age I expect better in a movie. It got better though, and Smith (and dog) did a fine job although you somehow felt he wasn't quite right for the part. You will know what the film is about by now, suffice to say it was a watchable and enjoyable romp but you wouldn't put it in your Favourites list. Sadly the ending was a major letdown, and smacked of the director not being quite sure how to end it. I've read that they started to shoot the film before the ending was scripted, and you begin to wonder if it ever was, it seems to have been made up as they went along. I understand the DVD release has an alternate ending which should be interesting. It definately needs one.

I was really enjoying this and getting tight into the storyline. The 'things' started to come after him.... then 10 minutes later, the film was finished ! I was left confused and felt like an important part of the story had been cut out.

Please do not be fooled - this is not a cinematic version of Richard Matheson's story at all. This is a remake of the second version of this story to be filmed, The Omega Man with Charlton Heston. After some interesting opening scenes and atmospheric sequences in an abandoned city, the film goes down the toilet and you're left with another useless Will Smith vehicle. Avoid.

Just another zombie movie

worst film i have seen in a long time, not much story line just a poor film, will smith is normaly in very good films and is a good actor but i was disappointed in this, def would never watch again an would never reccomend it unless you need help to fall asleep.

Will Smith over acting and camping it up somewhat to try to fill the void of only having him and a dog on the screen for most of the film. (the dog is a better actor by the way!) Terrible effects for the 'baddies' and all in all very disappointing, thought Wild Wild West was Smiths low point but even that now has competition! Stay away

More a remake of 28 weeks later rather than The Omega Man, Will Smith is surrounded by zombies who can only come out at night and have superhuman speed and strength (makes it more of a challenge to fight them than the lumbering kind of zombie but doesn't really gel with creatures who are virus ridden and supposedly surviving on a very limited supply of fresh blood and flesh). The film is quite slow in parts as a way of showing the tedious lifestyle that Smith endures although any action sequences are done at a much higher level of sound than is necessary (volume down to avoid annoying the neigghbours and then back up when the dialogue has now become a whisper). Not a bad film in itself but spoilt with the need to present Smith as a conscientious scientist still trying to find a cure so he can 'fix' the problem (no doubt part of Smiths avowed intent to run for president one day and needs to have such films in his back catalog to show his worthiness). Finally derailed by some poor cod philosphy on viruses being man's fault more than God's.

Essentially a good film but thought it was overrated a bit monotonous with a sudden ending which almost felt like the budget had run out - the 'human race get killed off by a virus' genre has had some crackers to compare this to. However made me jump and kept me on the edge of my seat and some of the gore made me cover my eyes so certainly achieves what it sets out to do,

Typical American tosh! Imagine 28 weeks later set in New York and you've got it. If you don't get confused with the constant scene jumping back and forth you'll be amazed at the pathetic ending. Don't bother watchin the alternative ending cos thats even more unbelievable.

i just wanted so much more from this it had moments of outstanding quality and enjoyment that i was just caught up in the film and then bang it crashed into a wall and ruined everything that had gone before. i cant describe for fear of a spoiler, do watch it as this has some outstanding moments ruined by what felt that they had lost the last third of the script and just jumbled something together on a toilet break and filmed that.

I enjoyed this movie for several reasons: 1. Will Smith was top class again. 2. The story was interesting and 3. It was educational; was that true about Bob Marley getting shot and then performing a few days later? What I didn't like was 1. I ' m a bit fed up with constant computer imaging, although it's probably necessary sometimes it's just over used and I thought that was the case here. Really only one complaint.

Will Smith is a legend but I think his ego is getting bigger than him, this film has been raved about for months but I found it ...okay!

A very American view of the collapse of humankind and riddled with inconsistances. Good effects but weak storyline.

I have felt drawn to write a review, to help others feeling as empty and dissapointed as I did after watching this. I just didn't get inside this film at all. I really couldn't get attached to it. A sub plot about a man and his dog was emotional, but the script on the whole seemed to have no subtlety at all, and frankly I was expecting something a little more action packed. It is easy to compare this film with 28 days later, as essentially the story is the very similar. However, where 28 days later was more thrilling and chilling, I am legend is not. Presumably the budget for this was much bigger than 28 days, and so the effects are much grander and bigger (and blue-ray tastic), but frankly I didn't get any sense of being scared, nor the sense of loneliness or barrenness. Perhaps that 28 days is based in the UK helps it in this respect. The story is obvious and weak. I wanted something sophisticated to happen, but it doesn't. It needed more drama and didn't fulfil. I hoped to see the much anticipated blu-ray effects blow my socks off, but again, it just looked pretty and clever, but not amazing. In summary, a big build up has created a big let down. Not at all as good as I expected - and all I expected was a bit of action, thrill and excitement.

Will Smith has had a few great movies but this unfortunately is not one of them. There were too many gaps in the story line for me and I found the ending to be very abrupt. I've seen the preview of Doomsday where the storyline is similar but this film certainly surpasses I Am Legend. Sorry Will, you could have done better.

I rate Will Smith's work highly but not this piece. Disappointing with a totally unnecessary ending. I'll say no more so as not to spoil it for others.

The original film, now classified as an oldie, is the best and always will be.

Dull, Boring and a waste of time. Very little happens and the things that do are predictable and poor. Simply dont bother.

Was expecting more from this movie with all the hype that went out. There was good bits that gave a bit of excitiment but overall and average movie for Will Smith.

I didn't dislike this movie, I think there are good bits and bad ones. I love the attempt of showing the psychological damage of someone that lives alone in the world, although I found the reason to be there weak and not really exploited. I like the fact that there are a lot silences and quite scenes, where everything seems still. I think the use of CGI was often forced and the 'zombies' were very poorly rendered, I would have rather seen more make-up and costumes than badly done computer monsters. I would recommend this movie only if u are really into 28 later type of movies or you just want light entertainment. .... the best bit: the dog!

I was very dissapointed with this film as the trailer and story promised so much. It also highlighted a problem with much overused CGI these days. When used well you can almost believe the unreal (e.g Lord of the Rings)' . Here it was so bad it was laughable in places. The main problem for me however were the unexplained/inconsistent parts in the story and the fall back to the man fights zombies scenario.

Ok, so the main reason that my partner & I wanted to watch this film, was that we were in New York when they were filming this, on Seventh Avenue, outside our hotel! We however, very much enjoyed 28 Days Later which we had heard was a similar style of film to I am Legend and therefore were looking forward to this also. From the outset, the so called CGI was appalling and so not believable, that the impact of a deserted New York did not have the same impact as the deserted London scenes in 28 Days Later. I feel sorry for I Am Legend as this is apparently based on a book written in the 50's and therefore perhaps if this had been made before 28 Days Later and had been done by a British team, it would have had the edge. Watch 28 Days Later - heaps better,

Will Smith does a good job in his solitary role and New York is brilliantly transformed into wilderness. Unfortunately that's all the good stuff summarised - there is nothing to make this film stand out as all aspects covered have been dealt with much more elegantly in other films. Infected beings are rendered in comically unrealistic CGI (imagine 'The Mummy' with extra slapstick), the action and suspense are both fairly tame, the plot development is awkward, unsatisfying, and aimed squarely at the American market. If you want a good film of this ilk, watch 28 Days Later, and if you're in the mood for more of a Blockbuster, watch 28 Weeks Later.

One of my sore points with the film is the vampires done solely in CGI, it looked quite ropey. I do think, that they would of looked better in many scenes with actually actors. I suppose, using CGI for the creatures in all the scenes gave a continually to their look. The effects work well in the city scenes; as now New York is overgrown with plant life and the noise is of the jungle ( as supposedly animals from zoos escaped ) not the 'urban jungle' this juxtaposition works well. This is the second film i've seen this year that references 9/11, as with the images of NYC in certain desperate position (like in Cloverfield) and the dialogue of 'This is Ground Zero' within this film. The relationship with the dog works well, as it his last link to his previous life and his family, before the plague. So it shows the emotional aspect of his need for companionship.

I am Legend was a big disappointment after all of the hype. The worst thing was the hughly comical graphics which prevented me from becoming engaged in the film, they looked very cheap & very unrealistic. Will Smith did a good job with a not particially interesting script, could have been vastly improved with a more sympathetic/skilled director.

i have seen the original of this film and didnt think this take on it was nearly so good nothing like the same suspence also really disliked the the computer animated baddies, and animals. not as good as the original with charlton heston.

I was really quite disappointed with this film. With all the hype I was looking forward to watching it. I was thoroughly enjoying it and then it just ended, just like that. i was really gettting into the film and it was like someone had said `right thats your lot, times up end the film`. What an appalling ending. this film could have been excellent instead left me feeling like it wasn`t quite completed as if they couldn`t think of a decent ending. Disappointing for a Will Smith film that promised so much

I found this film very predictable and boring, i nearly fell asleep in the middle. Very slow and same old same old story.

I ws expecting a bit of a thriller, a bit of hiding behind a cushion, but no was a tad more exciting that Lassie but not much. Left you with more questions than answers. If he could not get out - how did she get in and then out. Could have been better

I went into this film with almost no prior knowledge of what to expect... although i vaguely knew that it was a 'horror' film. The start of this film is brilliant. It takes bravery to allow one actor to hold a film for such long periods on his own and I was incredibly impressed with Will Smith. The script and sensitive touches (like when going to change music he puts back the cd he has taken) are superlative. You feel real attachment to both Will Smith and his hound, Sam. However, as with so many American films... (e.g. Iron Man most recently),... it's like they get to the 1 hour mark and think.. hey, we've still got to blow $20million or else no-one will come to watch our film ! At this point the film deteriorates, underminding the poignancy of the ending. By moving at such a speed at the end flaws in the plot also surface. It is a shame because we were all really impressed and excited by the film for ages...then at the end, were somewhat flat. It could have been great, a classic... but in the end.. it's just good... worth watching for sure.

Perhaps if I hadn't already read the book, I would have enjoyed the film more. The film bears little resemblance to the original book, and Will Smith is a poor choice for the lead character. Glad I rented and didn't buy!

I rented this for my husband and he said it was rubbish...so rent it and see!

after seeing this i'm quite keen to see the other films on which it's based. only then i think i'll be able to judge this properly. it's not a bad film in it's own right, but it does seem to come up short in some areas and takes a while to get going. will smith as the leading man is as likeable as ever and appeals to a wide audience. for what it's worth i'm glad i've seen this now, as i was quite keen to see it since it came out in the cinema. it's only made me more determined to see the likes of the omega man now to see what all the fuss is about.

Nothing like the book but still worth a watch. The end is awful but the rest is good!

I enjoyed this. My husband didn't so much and asked a few times where it was going, but he tends to say that with all films. The action was good but i was disappointed that it was CGI. The film would've been much scarier and more realistic if they'd used people instead of animation. That just didn't give it an 'authentic' feel. Shame.

watchable zombie thriller but its been done before

Not bad, didn't realise there would be a mild horror/scary element. But cleverly done nonetheless

So what happens when you get one of the biggest Hollywood production companies, a near enough bottomless budget, and one of the businesses biggest stars in Will Smith? A guaranteed success right? Absolutely wrong. This film could have been great, one of THE all time greats, but they oh so fail, and leave you feeling very disappointed by the final product. Will Smith is Robert Neville who is the last man on earth, as 3 years ago a 'cure' for cancer took a wrong turn and became a virus which ultimately wiped out all that took it, and turned them into flesh hungry vampires. Neville remains in New York City hoping that he can find the cure in his laboratory. The film shows how he copes to survive through day and night, whilst staying out of harms way of the night vampires. Now don't get me wrong, the first half of the film is absolutely sublime. The settings and locations are absolutely incredible, and will leave you mouth open. You will never see Times Square like this ever again. Will Smith does a very good job again with a script which must only be about 4 pages. After all, how much dialogue can you have with one man and his dog? The CGI of the cars and the animals are pretty poor considering its budget, but I can accept that. The film creates quite a spooky atmosphere, always leaving you on edge, especially the scene in the abandoned building which builds as much tension as you will see in any film. This is how the film should have been kept up, as they were going in the right direction with it. And that when things take a turn for the worse. And I really do mean for the worse. We are introduced to the gang of vampires, and you get a massive overdose of CGI, and bad CGI at that. They all look like something out of Shrek, but worse. I can't understand why the film makers could have gone creative with make up and used actual extras to make up the vampires. This would at least have made their movements more realistic. This is another thing, for some reason they all have super human strength, speed and agility. Surely a fatal virus would not have these side effects. We are then introduced to another character who somehow manages to fight off about 100 of the vampires, carry Will Smith out of car wreckage and then heal him in his own home, all by her. Film making at its best. And then to round off, they add in all different types of religious symbols and references, as if to say that God will save us all. The film could have been epic, but at just 90 minutes, it says it all that this is just another average film adaptation. If you have read the book beforehand, you will know exactly how good it COULD have been. The film misses so many different aspects from the book which would have made it a hundred times better, but instead conclude the film in a very rushed manner and leaves plenty of things unanswered. But the first half of the film is remarkable, it’s just a shame it could not have continued. If you enjoyed 28 Weeks Later, or Resident Evil, then this is right up your street.

worth a watch a bit drawn out but with good effects

Films now often seem to be 2 hours longer than they need to be. Finding the balance in how long a film should be is an important piece of the puzzle a piece i feel is truly missing from I am Legend. Virus leads to lonely man, leads to salvation. I had no real time to be scared I didnt care that the world had came to an end. I want depth if i'm just going to be watching one person, not just an ending that came from nowhere.

All my mates moaned about this and said it was boring. I thought give it a chance, but it is boring. You expect a film with long tracts of walking, talking to a dog and not much going on to at least have something to say, but it doesn't. Apart from one tense scene when his dog runs off into a building there is nothing memorable about this. Watch 28 weeks later instead.

Good film, but predictable is how I would describe I am Legend. It leaves you feeling a bit like 'Oh is that it...' The idea is great and there are a few moments of hiding behind cushions. I think it could have been executed a little better and the plot was a little thin.

Sorry to be rude but this is a film with a good trailer and not much else. The CGI is phenomenal but not worth the watch alone. The score seems absent adding to the grating pace .

This was not what I expected and found is scary in parts. So much hype, but to me a great let down. The only character I liked was the dog his acting was great!

I thought it was a fun film to watch, very easy and you will easily forget as well but it is entertaining. If you don't want to much of mental stretching but plain entertainment that keeps you on the edge of your seat (or in the kitchen like me with some scenes) than you will enjoy this.

The begining of the movie was OK to keep me interested till all of a sudden the movie came to an end. It seemed like the producer was short of cash to go on further and ended the movie abruptly...

Will, Will what where you thinking of? Yes I am a Will Smith fan and this is not one of his best. The story line was simple but it got dragged out for too long. Last man (and his dog) standing yes and......... I still watched til the end though.

Was not what I was expecting the film to be, Will Smith was good, but I did not like the way the storyline was done. Would have been better to she the story unfold as it was happening and not seeing it in flashbacks. Was quite slow to begin with, but got a bit better when the nightwalkers (Vampires) came into it. Just watch the trailer for the movie and basically you've seen the whole thing. There's not much else to the story! The original idea of one man alone in a city (apart from the creatures) is very interesting but after the first few minutes you've got over that and expect some kind of plot/story but none appears AND where did the electricity come from? civilisation ended three years earlier and yet there seems to be enough power for unlimited numbers of high powered lights and appliances!!!! I think the producers of this film should have taken a look at 28 days later............ mmmmm Will Smith stark bollock naked in the opening scenes ........................YES!

Awful film with a ridiculous storyline. It had decent special effects but I gave up on the story half way through. Only worth watching if you want to be scared senseless for no purpose.

this remake begs the question why? why did will smith agree to do it? the script is poor, the direction weak. None of the themes are explored. In the end, all it amounts to is a silly zombie film when it could have been so much more.

Remember a previous incarnation of this movie from the 1970's with Charlton Heston as The Omega Man. That had quite an effect on me at the time (probably due to my youth) still like the idea and the action/effects are great but kept feeling something was missing...

It seems to me such an easy concept to get right - yet I Am Legend gets it completely wrong again. The movie looks good (well not those terrible generic CGI monsters - but the city look goods) but seems utterly unplanned. Or perhaps cut to bits in editing. The ending is the biggest failure though, so dull and committee-planned it totally destroys any kind of serious message the film was trying to portray. Once again - read the book.

Not bad. Good special effects. Probably much better at the cinema. Love Will Smith so as far as I am concerned he can do no wrong. Its up there with Independence Day and the like...not mind-blowing, but certainly worth a look and okay for a nite in with a few beers and mates.

Watch this only if you don't mind tense, edge of your seat, hide behind a cushion films. Will Smith is very believable and his dog is an absolute star. Some of the effects, particularly the mutants weren't brilliant, but nonetheless I'd say it was pretty entertaining in an anxiety inducing kind of way.

Ok short and sweet ...... if you have read the book ...... forget the film ..... if you have seen the film and havnt read the book .... GO GET THE BOOK. The film lacks depth in both its portrayal of the main character and the connection to the place and beings around him! great expectation .... bigger let down!

I came slow close to watching this at the cinema. I was with my wife and her Aunt at the time and it was a choice between 'I am Legend' or 'P.S. I Love You'. I really wanted to see 'I am legend' at the time but being the gentleman I opted for 'P.S. I Love You'. After finally getting the film on DVD I am so glad that I didn't waste my money on seeing this at the cinema. It was sooo dull and depressing! The infected are not scary at all. I was hoping for usual zombie flesh ripping gore but there was none. Seeing the empty streets looked good but its been done before with 28 Days Later and that looked impressive. If you have nothing else to watch and want to see it give it a go but make sure you have a comedy to watch afterwards!

This is a brilliant film, I have heard that there 2 endings and I would really like to see the other one. I would recommend this film, even though I spent a third of the time hiding behind my hands or pacing in the other room, shouting tell me when it's over I did enjoy this film. I am not a big fan of mutated people, zombie's or otherwise but Will and his dog make this film well entertaining.

AS SOON AS THIS FILM GETS GOING WILL SMITH DIES AND ITS AT THE END .IT SPENDS 99% OF THE FILM WALKING AROUND HAVING FLASH BACKS AND THEN ONCE ALL IS IN PLACE FOR THE FILM TO GO TO THE NEXT LEVEL IT ENDS. VERY POOR WOULD WATCH IT AGAIN. IT SEEMS THE PRODUCERS RAN OUT OF MONEY AND COULD BE BOTHERED TO FINISH THE FILM SO MUCH MORE COULD OF HAPPENED

I usually like Wills films. Started off really good but I lost interest after about 40 minutes.

Hubby enjoyed this which is the first time he's managed to stay awake (probably because i said he wouldn't like it and find it boring, so he likes to prove me wrong!). Not a bad film.

Thought critics gave this fim a hard time, I though it was very good and great to see new your so quiet. Another Will Smith performance.

What an amazing film. I'd read some bad reviews about this and all I can say is watch it for yourself. Yes, there's only Will Smith on screen for most part but that's part of the story! Gets very sad in parts and I cried like a baby! Brilliant!

This film couldn't really be categorized as a blockbuster and it doesn't pretend to be. The special effects are good and Will Smith's portrayal of a lonely man going slightly mad (and understandably so) is exceptional.

This was a very good film, but it had abit of a disappointing ending!

I really enjoyed this film from beginning to end. Will Smith was brilliant as well as his dog. It was very entertaining, with great special affects. It was one of the best films I have seen in a long time. Brilliant!!!

Overall a good film but i felt it had been a bit overrated and over hyped. I expected more from the ending, and expected more of the storyline to be explained. At times a tad boring, but worth watching.

I had high hopes of this film as I watched 'The Omega Man' when it first came out. It didn't really go anywhere. Half the time Will Smith was wandering through the ruins with his dog looking for food.Once the dog died the film nosedived.The ending was a bit silly although expected. I watched it with my 17 yr old daughter who wasn't too impressed either.She thought the film was too short and bits remained unresolved.

I feel very fortunate that I read the book before seeing any of the films supposedly based on this amazing tale. I eagerly watched omega man only to be totally dissapointed by its complete disregard for the story, I have not seen last man on earth but intend to. I thought I am legend the movie was a very credible, likely scenario of the book had they not chosen to call the main charachter Neville, please someone make an accurate depiction of this fantastic book it would be the best, most intelligent vampire movie of all time. The cgi is fine, I do not understand the gripes from many other reviewers, use your imagination and read more books, first of all read the novel which is brilliant. An interesting take on the story, but as is often the case inferior. I really enjoyed this film even though the book is one of my favourite books of all time.

As the title says, I wasn't expecting much from this but I really enjoyed it. It was never going to be anything that taxed you too much mentally, but I thought the story was well paced, Will Smith was excellent, and I was genuinely tense for a good part of the film.

Long awaited to see this considerng the trailers and ads which tries to make it a must see. But... opening scenes are OK with a few funny sketches, such as Will using the wing of a fighter plane to tee off as if it were a golf driving range. Then the film turns into a kind of Blade/ Underworld scenario but the creatures and suspense are disappointing. I wouldn't buy it, just rent it.

I was really looking forward to this film after seeing it advertised.

I was really disappointed after wathching it, mainly because most of the way through I kept thinking this film was "28 days" (but being a major brit flick fan) 28 days was far more intense/interesting and better acted.

This is an average movie, after watching it I kept trying to think why was it so average, my opinion is, as much as I like Will Smith, he was not the right actor for this. No way could my vivid imagination consider Will Smith to be an eminent doctor! Will - stick to saving the world with your muscles and find someone more believable to play a doctor.

Probably worth wathching if not seen "28 days".

Sorry, but this film stinks and sinks without a trace when set alongsides The Omega Man and Quiet Earth. There is just no excuse for its lack of real creduality (a wonder cure-all for cancer that was only trialed on a few thousand people) and Will Smith gives a very subdued and wooden performance as the lead, if any acting honours are due they should go to the dog! Given the budget and the star lead it really should be better. The basic premise of the film is something that most of us will have thought about at some time so can I suggest that you watch The Quiet Earth which was very low budget but did have a touch of reality.

If you are expecting a true depiction of the storyline in the book "I am legend" then prepare to be disappointed. Hollywood have tried to bring the story into the present (or 2009 anyway), but there were many aspects of the book which added great "bite" (pardon the pun) to the original story, which are just not picked up on in this film. The ending was poor and it would have been a lot more poignant and thought provoking if they had stuck to the book on this occasion. We also don't really get a feel for how this post apocalyptic world came about (Emma Thompson's doctor's explanation was hardly pivotal!). There was also a lot less vampire bashing than expected. However, I did like the addition of the dog Sam and Will Smith's acting really comes to the fore as he is pretty much flying solo until the last 30 minutes or so.

Overall, I did enjoy the film, but probably would have enjoyed it more had I not been expecting the "I am Legend" storyline.

Like other reviewers I wasn't expecting a great film - I watched more out of interest based on the hype the film had received. Boy was I surprised! Yes, the film (as far as I am concerned) has an identical plot to 28 days later (but based in New York), but what really sets it apart from this and other films is the oscar winning, highly emotional portrayal by Smith and the beautiful, haunting and atmospheric music. Sure, the CGI effects weren't the best, but they did the job and didnt detract from Smiths acting which honestly was superb. The gore element was JUST right; this isn't a zombie film and Im confident the director got just what he was looking for - shock factor, tension, sadness and hope! I thoroughly recommend this film ... and when you've watched it, maybe you might do as I did and download the music score from iTunes - haunting! One other film I might also recommend for similar viewing (i.e. a powerful cinematic experience) is Children Of Men - another film like I Am Legend that surprises so much.

I really enjoyed this film. It made me jump continuously and was a little scary but had a good plot and good ending. It was also, surprisingly, moving in parts too - so nice to see a multi faceted film rather than the more common one dimensional features I've seen recently.

I was pleased to watch a film, for a change, that was good throughout and kept you thoroughly entertained - wondering what was going to happen next. Highly recommended.

The suspense was built in a very measured way as you gradually come to realise that this is not just a twist on a "Robinson Crusoe" man alone with his dog theme.

The ending surprised me and despite the fact that it kind of didnt make sense - it added to the power of the film.

I lowered my expectations because of the bad reviews. Really enjoyed the film. Not a classic but good acting, effects and action scenes. A good way to pass 2 hours.

Thought this would have been predictable and in someways it was in someways not. There are shocks, there is tension and there are sad bits.

I always feel films like this don't need to be disected in great detail, it kept me quiet for 2 hours and at times I was totally engrossed.

Get it for a wet aftrnoon, buts its better watched in the dark.

Disappointing film considering the lead role of Will Smith. Weak and unoriginal 'plot' line and the CGI was of poor quality. The only redeeming feature was Sam, the dog, who gave the most authentic performance.

I enjoyed watching this film until they spoilt it by bringing god into it and going religious. It is an OK film probably could have been longer.

My advice, get the Omega man out and see the film that this copies and not very well. Mr smith is desperate to prove he can act, it is very strange at times. By far the best actor is the dog. Hollow and slow. not worth the hype

The first part of the film is well done. The lonely existence of being possibly the last person on Earth is genuinely well done. Will Smith does this well and the hunting episodes in NYC reinforce the fact that nobody else is there. The flashbacks work well to explain why and how we are where we are, and I was enjoying the film.

Like most films with a degree of horror the scariest and unsettling bits are the unseen or nearly unseen. Sadly the makers of this movie chose to give us a full (rather bad CGI) view of what is meant to scare us.

I read the book some time ago and rather enjoyed the bleak but well explained ending - sadly the script chose to ignore this, and go for patriotic religious stuff instead.

Sadly to me I think this was an opportunity missed. Perhaps when the film gets remade again in 2038 we can expect something a bit better and thoughtful. Sadly I for one won't be about to watch it though....

I went to see this at the cinema last night and I thought it was one of the best films I have seen in a long time. Comparisons have been made with twenty- eight weeks later, but this is by far a better effort with some genuinely touching moments. Will Smith displays some fine acting and enables us to gain a vivd view of the destroyed world he inhabits, where a so called cure for cancer has led to the destruction of all. The film does not shy away from the effect complete isolation would have on any human, the most obvious being Robert Neville's recreation of everyday life by using store dummies.

The scenes of New York, utterly destroyed were amazing. I disagree with another reviewer about the use of CGI effects to create the "night- seekers" they were still terrifying and I noticed that I was not the only one in the cinema who jumped out of their skin on several occasions!

I thought this film was brilliant. The obligatory shot of an empty Picadilly Circus a la 28 Days Later just doesn't quite cut it.This is one film where the big budget really worked. All those empty shots of New York must have cost a fortune and really conveyed the feeling that Smith was all alone in the city. In that context the relationship he had with his dog was the only thing sustaining him.

I agree with the comments below abouut the 'monsters' climbing up walls but other than that I found it really believable. It is gripping, and you really identify with Smith. I didn't understand the comments below about him using his own lab - it seemed well equipped so what's the problem??

My one criticism would be the ending - I didn't really understand why he did what he did - don't want to give too much away!

loving it loving it loving it, this film is fab! It makes you sit on the edge of your seat, with tears in your eyes..... It may seem far-fetched now, but who knows in 20 yrs! Will Smith is brilliant, absolutely brilliant. Watch it, you will not be disappointed, i promise.

Would not even waste the time opening your dvd draw!!!! It was slow, and the director never really pulled it off with such few actors!!! Rubbish and very dissapointed, but I do respect each to there own.

Will Smith gives an excellent performance in this bleak tale of a lone survivor. The ending is somewhat predictable if you are familiar with the genre but it is original in every other aspect of the movie. A must see movie, especially if you are into the genre.

The best bits about the film were when Robert was going about his daily buisness - visiting the music store, driving round town etc. The emptyness of the city was very atmospheric and the scenes with the manaquins scarier than those with the infected. There were a few holes in the story - if the infected have lost all reason why would they keep pets? However if you can ignore these flaws - which you generally can then its a good film thats worth watching.

What can I say, The beautiful, gorgeous, handsome body of a man WILL SMITH is in it, what more do you want? But if you need to know more....... Film is based on a sole survivor theory. Will Smith is alone with his trusted dog ( the dog is great by the way too) trying to find a cure for the mutated virus that has wiped out mankind. The film starts off well, building up the feelings of loneliness and despair and how he has to deal with the manic creatures that live in the shadows of the night, constantly looking for a way to survive them and cure them. Great film, even though I am bias. Had me on the edge of my seat more than once and have to say it did make me cry on more than one occasion too.

Don't watch with the kids! Didn't realise how scary it was. Good start and suspense grew but didn't like the zombies and too scary. Not really my cup of tea this one and all went a bit silly.

I enjoyed watching this at home, glad I didnt fork out to watch it at the cinema. It was a bit slow at the start. Good cgi of the city being taken over by nature.I agree with other reviews that the mutants would have been better and more believable if they had used ' live' actors .Ending felt a bit rushed

This film came as a great disappointment to me. Essentially it's just a big budget show case for Will Smith that fails to deliver. It looks good, but that's as far as it goes. Potentially brilliant, actually average.

You gotta love some Will Smith. I mean, you just want to hang out with this guy and be his friend. But the script, maybe not so much on this one. Not unbearable though which I can't say for other films out there!! What is the world coming to?!

Recieved the DVD in the post and started watching it. After 5 minutes I realised I had already seen this film which was god as after 10 minutes the DVD went corrupt and I couldn't watch any more. Checked the DVD and it looked like someone had been trying to have sex with it. Scratches all over the disc and of very poor quality, never had this problem with blockbusters.

Looks great and had suspense etc but then it suddenly ended. Lots of first act and very little act 2 and 3.

Personally i think this film falls short. The digital effects are a bit ropey and the storyline could have been a bit better. It just ended suddenly with a quick answer ! 28 weeks later has set a benchmark, for me anyway.

Wil Smith goes from strength to strength. The special effects are ace. If you like escapism sci fi this is for you. There are snags in the plot, but, overal ok.

This film was not the sit on the edge of your seats, high action, heart in your mouth film I expected at all but when I got passed that I really enjoyed how story unfolds. Will Smith puts in a Fantastic performance as a sceintist trying to find a cure for a virus that has ravaged the population of New York. There are couple of things which could have been explained better or made more of but overall this is a really good film.

Anything with Will Smith in is guaranteed to be worth watching and this film is no disappointment.

I enjoyed the file most of the way through, untill the end. As soon as the girl turned up things went down hill rapidly. The ending really let down what was otherwise a very good film.

Expected more from this movie, was very slow to build and then seemed to be ended very rapidly. Will Smith is always watchable and Sam the dog is lovely but it needed a more consistant storyline.

This is 1 of the worst movies I have ever seen however I was so exited about the idea: 1 man on Earth. I thought hmmm, there must be a very clever trick in it. Well, there isn't. And he is not alone. There is a military base full of people, a woman with her child and of course the zombies. When I first saw the zombies I said: oh noooo, is this the big trick? Sooo boring. And it hurts my intelligence when a woman with a child on her side saves Smith by chasing away about 100 mad zombies with a torch! Or when Smith puts his dog in danger by walking in a trap which was so obviously a trap even for me however I don't live in a ghost city. What else could it be if there is no one else only him and the zombies??? And how could he survive the nights until he managed to build a zombie-safe fortress? How could the woman take him out the car and get him into his bed while he was unconcious? It's almost impossible for a woman even without zombies! Why did he not know about the mililary base and vica versa while the woman with a radio managed to get in contact with them? And when he finally managed to find the cure which can save the world and which he had been fighting for so long, he gives up and decides to risk the future of the Earth? And we celebrate him as a hero? Oh dear!!! And so on... There are poor action movies with unrealistic features which we still enjoy because of the entertaining action scenes. Well, there aren't any in this movie because it wants to be superserious however it is sooo far from it. The dog acts good? Great, but enough for my satisfaction. And this movie was a box office hit in America. It beat Lord of the Rings - Return of the King! Sad. Very sad.

This film was ok but i preferred the original film the omega man. The CGI was not that great they would have been better using real people as they did in the first film.Not terrible but not great definately average

As usual, Hollywood has gone over board and completely ruined a good story. Despite Will Smiths performance. I found it very poor indeed. It bears no relation to the original story.

I read the book a few months ago so was looking forward to seeing the movie - unfortunately the two just don't compare - Will Smith is out acted by a dog and the zombies - but he does get to do what he loves best - shout a lot - I spent most of the movie wondering when it was going to start, and the rest of the film wondering when it would end! Anyone considering watching this film, I suggest you read the book instead - it's much better!

Although I thought that this was very much an American version of '28 days later' I did enjoy it. There was enough suspense to keep me on the edge of my seat and the occasional surprise. A keeper.

I was expecting more from this film, I didn't find it scary or edge of my seat, and unusally I found Will Smith lacking in screen presence. The best thing about the film was Will Smith's four legged companion and lets not even go there! I didn't like the zombie creatures, they would have been more scary if they had left them with more human faces or traits.

This was really well done and I loved Will Smith in it. Fab

Will Smith gives yet another superb performance as the last man standing after a cancer drug goes the way of the pear. The deserted city scenes are worth the rental fee alone and all the fuss about poor CGI was unfounded. Yes I've seen better but it in no way spoilt the film as so many others have claimed. What did spoil the film was the cop out last 25 minutes and ending! After a superb first hour I took a break expecting at least another hour of the same to come. What I got was 25 minutes of rushed plot intent on cramming in the cliches to ensure the masses left the mutiplexes hand in hand. What a wasted opportunity. Having spent an hour building the tension beautifully I can only specualte at what went wrong. I knew where the plot was going but to be rushed there in this fashion was a real let down after such a superb build up. But don't let this put you off. I was just expecting more and maybe I'll totally love the next remake!

One of the better films that we have rented recently, but not quite legendary. The plot, acting, directing etc. were all good, but there was not (IMHO) that little bit extra which would make this film outstanding justifying 5 stars. Maybe the reason for this is because the basic plot is not new - the film is (in any case) a remake.

This was a very dark depressing film with no joy or hope. Will Smith's portrayal of his character was excellant. I would not say it was one of his best films, but his talent at his craft was tested in this one, and he played a blinder. Not at all what I was expecting after seeing the trailers, but it was very different from the films I usually watch with Will Smith in. Well done to him for his excellant portrayal, hence the 4 stars.

I liked this film more than I thought I would; I watched it twice, and liked it better the second time around; I felt the first time I couldn't get my head around what was happening; but the second time it seemed to come together better; perhaps I was in a different mood for watching the film, i don't know. Will Smith's acting is superb, that is what kept me watching... and it must be hard to be the sole actor in a film; amazing. I reccommend you rent this film before buying it; as I think this is purely an individual's choice, well worth watching at least twice; like i said I prefered it the second time.

Excellent film and proof (if it was ever needed) that Will Smith is a superior actor. He's pretty much alone for 95% of the time (except for dog) and you really do start to feel his loneliness and isolation. Great story, good effects, just enough peeks at the bad guys to keep you on your seat until the grand finale. Close the curtains, turn of the lights and immerse yourself into his world!

I liked this film. Better made version of 28 days/weeks later. Difference is this is based in NY instead of London. Both cities are quarantined because of a rabies-style virus. That's where the similarity ends. I liked the plot line in this film - leaves you with some hope of a positive outcome.

Fantastic performane by Will Smith (think he's fantastic!) and the dog was brilliant too. Well though out remake of Charlton Heston 70's movie. Stylish and very very scary. Special effects are amazing. Scenes of deserted New York are chilling. Not for those of a nervous disposition. And defo not for kids - will give them nightmares for years! Loved this film.

CGI of the city is great - CGI for the baddies is dire! Not scary at all - real disappointment from a Will Smith film, although he does try his best to turn this movie into something watchable. Unfortunately, he can't do it all on his own and this is definitely the worst movie I have seen in ages. The dog, Sam, is fab and deserves a medal for adding some interest. REALLY glad I waited until this was on DVD and didn't waste my money going to watch it at the cinema.

A great start to the film but faded as it went on. it had the potential to be an exellent film i was let down by the ending what happens after he finds the cure? Do all the Zombie's Die? The Reason why this gets 3 stars is the great acting from will Smith. I think he saves this film from being a nightmare! I demend a 2nd Film

The gorgeous and wonderful Will Smith is his usual brilliant self in this film. The subject matter is disturbing as it is very believeable.

Very dissapointed with this film the anticipation of the film was far better than the viewing, but good performance from Will Smith as usual.

This is a very well created film, very thought through and well delivered. Will Smith and his dog play the parts to perfection. The acting along with the storyline helped me get into the film, although I became probably a bit too emotionally attached during two parts of the film (I am still suffering now). If you do want to become an emotional wreck, then do not get this film, otherwise, it is a fantastic watch.

This film did not live up to the hype or the casting. I found it very slow going although it was thought provoking and the ending was the best bit.

I had my concerns this film would not live up to its reputation but it was surprisingly good to watch. OK , the end comes a bit quick and its all over in minutes when they could have expanded on what happened afterwards a bit more but dont let that put you off. Its very well filmed and the story is good. Smith (as usual) plays his role perfectly and there are some really memorable moments. Give it a go, you'll be entertained by the special effects if nothing else!

This is a well made and slick film, with Wil Smith providing a very good performance as usual. However, it is neither as complex or as clever as 28 Days - just more budget! As you might expect, the story line for this American version is not very subtle. Stll, an enjoyable watch!

I am Legend is latest attempt at the doomsday end of the world scenario, very much in the style of the excellent 28 days later Will Smith plays a military doctor/scientist, the last man alive in New York after some kind of epidemic. Personally I love these kinds of films, how far from reality are these ideas? With scientists and governments dabbling in the unknown, cloning people and uncontrollable diseases rife maybe we should be taking notes! Anyway, hopefully the world has a few more years in her yet and watch these film for pleasure value only, and this film was quite enjoyable but not as gritty and pacey as we had hoped for. The director tries to pay close attention to Will Smiths emotions, his growing loneliness and builds tension off this, tension wise it delivers but for some reason we can not fully engage with Will Smith and the lingering drama scenes were perhaps too much as the film drops to a snails pace on several occasions. The set is credible and Wills dog absolutely fantastic, we both wanted her to be the hero! Anyway my wife did not really like this film, and I thought the Hollywood feeling was still too strong in what is a potentially very real and very scary scenario. Entertaining but not a classic. 6/10. 3 Stars.

I loved this film. Will Smith was awesome as the 'hero'. I thought Sam should be put forward for an oscar, I wish my pup was so well behaved! The premise of the film was very good, although I would have liked more information on how it all came about. I spent the first half an hour waiting for the 'others' the appear, which was nerve racking as I knew I had to expect something, but I didn't know what it was. Very thought provoking and a very good film.

I think the film is great, for the sci-fi fan, give you thought what will happen to Earth in the future, eh!. Classic!!

not much action the ending left you dissapionted

I can't understand how some people are saying this isn't anything like 28 weeks later - it's basically the same film with better CGI, but this doesn't detract from the film in my opinion. Kudos to Will Smith for some excellent scenes and as for the 'too quick' ending, I have to disagree - I thought it was well paced and seemed entirely natural for it to end the way it did (let's face it, it can only go one of 2 ways..) Yes I'm sure the book has more to it, but then don't they always? If you like 28 days later I'm sure you'll like this. If, like me, you felt underwhelmed by 28 weeks later, you'll probably prefer this one instead..

Hubby says this is the remake of the omega man, I actually do not know that, probably before I was born or something. This is absolutely brilliant, superb film.

I expected this to be just a popcorn eating time passer but i really liked it. Good balance of everything they tried to do. I would have done more with the ending though. overall i'd recommend it and i'm hard to please.

If you've read the novel on which this fim purports to be based - don't watch. It bears no resemblance at all. Whilst the book was a genuinely gripping read the film can actually bore you with it's over the top action. Will Self is as useless as usual, honing his strictly American style of non-acting to near perfection. My advice would be to simpky not bother.

Could have been a more interesting movie. I got to the end and thought... 'Have I missed something? The end of the movie has nothing to do with the first 90 minutes. What about all these things that happened during the movie. This film is unresolved.' For me, the storyline only makes sense when you see the alternate ending as that is what the film is actually building up to.

A bit over-rated and boring at times.

I shunned this at the movies as it didnt interest me. After hearing so many good reports I relented and watched it, and I'm glad I did. It wasnt amazing but I certainly enjoyed it more than I expected. I didnt realise it was a remake of The Last Man of Earth and it followed this quite well. Yes they have updated it and added more special effects and monsters, but overall the storyline was good and I thought Will Smith did pretty well. The end was a little disappointing, but I guess better than the average hollywood ending.

Another great film from Will Smith. The effects were excellent and the attention to detail helped make the scenario believable.

I am not a fan of zombie movies - but this one is fantastic ! Not too scarey, but really keeps you on the edge of your seat. Ages 12 to 50 - the whole family loved it.

Good story and cinamatography. Classic sci-fi storyline.

A 'vaccine for cancer' is found. 3 years later, New York is left with one man and his dog. The visual in this are simply breath taking. Creates the illusion of an decaying city beautifully. A very Brave role for Will Smith to go into. Yet, he does give some very good performance, spine chilling in places. Considering very few character it needed to be a good performance. He holds the fime together. I am Legend is not a feel good movie, and some place pretty gut wrenching. Its a introverted story about isolation, lose and in parts madness. The flash backs to me complete irrelevant to the main story. The 'infected' or buy product of the vaccine are to inhuman and to Gollum like to be scary. The ending was cheap and ultimately dissatisfied. However Being a fan on the post apolitical movie I was pleasantly surprise. If you like the idea of 28 days later, your like this but maybe not as much. The bonus feature on the DVD are limit to short cartoon animation. Which at first is disappoint. But the effort put in to this cartoon is simple amazing.They dark brooding feel which designed to shock and think. And in many why better than the main feature, well worth a watch

A film that starts off with great promise, and quickly the shine and polish of a Hollywood blockbuster dulls and fades into what can only be described as a p!ss poor attempt at a zombie movie. The underlying story of a man committed to fixing the wrong he and his kind have done and never giving up could have been dealt with much, much better. Some ridiculous overacting by Will Smith worthy of the Fresh Prince himself leaves a bad taste in my mouth still and whats more is that I sat through the best part of two hours only to see the ending of the film (which in itself was ridiculous) also become an advert for suicide bombing. Will smith sacrificing himself for the greater good?? Please! Now I have no idea if that was done on purpose or whether it was just not really thought about by the so called director of this lame duck. Sorry to those who enjoyed it but In my opinion the opening sequences right through to the rolling credits would be better off on the cutting room floor.

i had heard so much about this film, friends, reviews all positive but i think its a clasic example of the old saying 'don't belive the hype' The hole situation begs to be explored more and you only get snip-it's of what actually went on/going on. This film is a dead ringer for 28 days later/28 weeks later. I really like the chemistry between will and that dog (K-9), call me soppy but i found it very sweet. Once the dog went the movie went down hill, and some what predictable. Just as he throws in the towel some other surviours find him, what a coincidence! Will is a good actor, and he has to be in this movie. So thats 1 star. 1 star for the dog. And thats my assumpion of the film in short. mookstar*

A poor copy of the 70s Sci-fi movie The Omega Man starring Chalton Heston.Admittedly the computer grafics were good but still not a patch on the orridginal.

Bursts of action followed by the actions of a very bored lonley inhabitant and his dog who are ducking and diving from the weirdo's of the night....keeps you on your toes for a while....but can be a bit drawn out in the middle.

Not exactly a movie I “enjoyed” watching and most of the time I sat anxiously strangling, the armrests of my chair. Movie starts eerily with (Will Smith) in a deserted New York, the lone survivor of a “medical catastrophe”. Definitely not my kind of movie, but the suspense and brutality…too close to the reality of 2008, made it GRIPPING viewing and I couldn't switch it off, even though it left me tense and needing to chill. This is worth watching if you appreciate a dash of alarm and the wilderness of big city life.

Plot was a bit predictable and it seemed like the film was made to suit Will Smiths ego. Not in same league as 28 days later. Having said that the pirotechniques are excellent and its quite an entertaing flick just felt the ending was a bit of a letdown.

This film is okay, but there are too many flaws in it and you are left with too many questions at the end, so much so, that you wonder why he just didn't drive to the colony in the first place! There are a few jumpy parts, but nothing that particularly scared me. Wouldn't exactly call it a thriller! Glad I didn't waste my money watching this in the cinema, but okay for something easy to watch on a Friday night.

Disaster-type movie in which our hero is all alone in New York apart from his Germen Shepherd dog Sam(who incidently steels the show at times). A virus has struck New York and people,including his wife and child, have been evacuated. Only people and animals left have been struck by the virus,which is a half life where man and dog act rabid,only protection being that they do not like the light.Our hero manages to get hold of one of these wild people and tries to attempt a cure for the virus. A good film wo settle down to on a Saturday night.

very good movie, it has everything you need in a movie!!!!!!!

This is possibly the worst film I have had to sit through! I only kept watching in the hope it would pick up the pace and something would happen. Then the rubbish CGI zombie/vampire (what ever they are) appear, OMG i've seen scarier monsters on scooby doo! Great I wasted 96 minutes of my life!

It must be said that Will Smith is excellent in this film. It shows his screen presence and acting is of a high standard when he can carry a film where he is alone for the most part. However, I felt the film could have done with some more action scenes.

To be honest i don't know what the big hype was all about!!!! I thought it was a knocked off version of 28 days later. It was ok worth a watch.

Okay, I dont normally write dodgy reviews, my view is that different people have different tastes and what one person hates may well be the best film ever for someone else, but personally I felt this one is a real shame. I saw all the trailers and read a few reviews and really fancied this film but felt let down. with all the rabid-type animals / people this is a bit like MIB without the humour and spends too much time concentrating on Will Smith trying to find a cure and hunting for other 'normal' people - the only good bit about this is his self-sacrifice at the end and it's really predictable. I watched it through so there may have been some good bits but they're few and far between and this is a real disappointment after The Pursuit of Happiness in which Will and Jayden Smith are the best I've ever seen them. Sorry guys - dont get your hopes up :(

Disappointing. Big build up in the trailers when released but not a great film.

Wasn't sure when I ordered this film but my apprehension soon evaporated with another stunning performance from Will Smith - tense drama that had you guessing and on the edge of your seat for much of the time. Thoroughly enjoyable!

This film was a rather interesting concept - the whole curing cancer thing - but it didn't concentrate on that enough in my opinion. There was no indication as to why the 'infected' people turned into flesh-gorging vampire/zombie type beasts either! Nevertheless it was a good film on the whole with some scary, jumpy moments. I thought that the ending was weak however, very 'Hollywood' and more about Will Smith looking cool than anything else!

this film as been done before and i'me afraid a lot better by charlton heston,that said this is still worth renting,just dont expect to much.

....it was great! Really was - kept us interested right up until the last 5 minutes when the film makers must have decided to go down the pub or something. The ending is awful! Truly awful!!!! What a shame!!!!!! It's like they just gave up. Can't fault Will Smith but I can only assume he didn't read the whole script! We were like a room full of deflated balloons while the credits rolled!

A excellent remake of the original film only spoilt by the film company trying to compress this into 90 minutes. Setting the scene should have been given more time and was rushed spoiling the build up to this man made disaster. Will Smith acting is excellent especially when he comes across survivors and he struggles to come to terms with this.

Disappointing. The 3rd flim adaptation of the novel (1954) is technically well executed and well acted, but the impact is unconvincing. Will Smith the hero fails to inject a full sense of his isolation, but this is down to the script. The cgi is good in parts but overdone and ineffective in the baddies of the flim. Actors would have been better, although more expensive. Knowing the storyline detracts from the impending sense of threat, so its best to go in cold. Worth seeing if you like sf/horror, but the script was weak.

Very good then it suddenly ended. Felt to me as if the producers had run out of money. Introducing new people 5 mins before the end and then not developing those characters left me very dissappointed.

Will gives a good acting performance and the film grips your attention - but - it is scary. The images of the 'monster-creatures' in the film are not for weaklings ... this film can be regarded as horror more than sci-fi ... so be prepared - or - close your eyes (if you can) to avoid those scary moments.

Wow, I loved this film. Fantastic atmosphere, great acting by Will Smith and not so scary that the teenage kids can't watch it (who am I kidding, I scare more easily than they do!).

This was well acted Will Smith shows is talents again. Film wasn't an exact copy of omega man or the last man on earth (did wonder why we needed a third) I was pleasantly surprised to be honest not my favourite genre to start with but as book written in 1954 fair to say original - does what it says on tin

I was a bit dubious about the plot but the film instantly engages you and keeps you interested. Well made and well acted - nice one Will :-)

This film quite simply blew me away. The atmosphere it creates of having Will Smith as the only surviving human in a New York inhabited by wild animals and mutants is incredible. You will be gripped from start to finish. This performance confirms Will Smith as one of the leading actors of our generation. A masterpiece.

I like many others had high hopes for this film and as it began in the deserted overgrown streets of New York I was intrigued. The state of loneliness of Smiths character was interesting and in fact good. But this did not last as for some reason the 'beings' themseleves were finally revealed as poor CGI (which must be difficult to acheieve), 28 days later use of actual extras bloodied up is far more chilling than computer nonsense characters. But this wasnt the worst part, the worst part of the film was the annoying christian connotations, I wont say more because i dont want to spoil it but i was extremly irratated by this choice of the Director and screenwriter. Save yourself time and dont watch this film, if you like it fair enough but in honesty this is rubbish, like so many Hollywood blockbusters of late start well then just give up half way through!

Not one for the girls, maybe guys would prefer this one!

I looked forward to recieving this dvd but was surprised by how scary this film was once I got into it! The first 45mins are so tense, that at points I couldnt even look at the screen, annoyingly asking my boyfriend every 5 seconds what was happening! Even with the shock scare factor that this movie threw at me, I really enjoyed all aspects of the film and have been recommending it to everyone I meet!

Although it made me jump it had been so hyped up i was disappionted.

Brilliant, different, original - loved it!

I cant understand the bad reviews about this film as i thought it was brilliant. Most of the bad reviews were based upon the face that there was only Will Smith in an hour of this film. THATS THE POINT!!! He is one of the last people remaining so what would be the point of lots of people walking around. If you liked the zombies of 28 days later with a sork of Tom Hanks Castaway feeling of lonelines thrown in then u will love this film. Ignore the bad reviews and watch.

i went to the cinema to see this film, it reminded me a little of 28 days but done on an expensive budget. i thoroughly enjoyed this film worth a watch

This was a brilliant film with great special effects.

Not as exciting as I thought it would be. Slow moving, but showed that Mr Smith is still an exceptional actor, doing dark quite well. Did get get my blood pumping and predictable end.

Will Smith again gives a great performance in this last man on earth vs infected thriller. I'm a little more than annoyed by the fact however, that the film was 90 minutes only, it did seem like someone ran out of ideas and just wrapped the film up with a bang. If you enjoy the expectation that the rest of the planet has been wiped out and you could do what you want with what you want when you want for the rest of your life, obviously being careful to dodge the native infected at night then you will love this. Overpopulation of the planet sometimes gives us a feeling of require a bit of peace and quiet. Good plot, great effects, there is something wrong with you if you fail to enjoy this film. Watch it on a big screen if you can, originally saw it in the cinema, size matters...

loved this movie, liked the whole man n dog chemistry n relationship, pretty sad and pretty uplifting aswell, the horror side of it was good not astounding but good, not that many scares but enught intrigue and suspense, ending was pretty weird but as a whole this movie is definitely a great watch and will smith is great in it as usual that mans come a long way since his fresh prince days,and fast become a prolific actor.

It doesn't have to be a fast moving film to be good but if the film is slow, then it has to work hard to keep you engrossed. This film failed. I didn't have empathy for Will Smith's character or the dog and the end couldn't come quick enough for me. Hugely disappointing!

Passes the time and is well presented but such a poor representation of the book that I just couldnt enjoy it properly. I tried to separate my knowledge of the book from the film but failed. Not a terrible way to pass some spare time but not an experience I would repeat.

Don't get me wrong i totally admire Will Smith as an actor one of todays better than most. Having followed his carrier from his earlier days and realising that this dude was to become one of hollywoods greats. But i have to say this film sucks. Its boring for want of a better word. 1 hour and twenty minutes of one man and his dog driving around an empty city while chunering away to himself only to die in the last five minutes. I get the feeling the director and producer got together over coffee and said 'so where we going with this' 'duno' says the other. 'ok kill him off call it a wrap and move on'. A total waste of celluloid and Will's tallents. But that is only my opinion judge for yourselves.

A good film with a story line that makes you think about things. Sad in places but Wil Smith places an excellant part with his dog Sam.

I had been looking forward to seeing this film, having heard good things about the book. I usually enjoy Will Smith's performances, but I found myself having little sympathy with his character in this film. I think he needs someone to interact with on screen to produce a believable performance. Because, now I think about it his best screen appearences have been alongside strong supporting roles. The visual effects were as good as we've come to expect from Hollywood these days. The film is worth seeing, but don't expect too much.

will smith is great. he is not always this good. the film is gripping, even though like cast away not much dialogue in the film, but it was tense and enjoyable. a really great film and good ending, and good performances. i recommend it.

I rented this film with much excitement, I had heard mixed reveiews but from quite unreliable sources so thought I'd give it a go. I LOVE Will SMith, even his bad stuff so I sat down to watch. The flm opens brilliantly, with New York a baren wasteland, with wild animals roaming freely and hunting openly. This leaves you wondering A) what has happened to New York, and B) What is WIll so scared of!? Firstly, i HATED 28 days later, I really don't like to see animals is distressing or nasty roles, I also didn't like the 'mutants' so the rats in the lab freaked me out to start and initially got my back up! Although the mutants made me hide behind the cushion I found the disturbing bit the infected animals. Then when trustly loving Sam runs into a dark building anf Smith finds blood everywhere we find out WHY he is so scared! God it was awful! I eventually had to switch off when Sam got bitten and Smith had to infect him, I was in floods of tears and couldn't watch anymore! It was AWFUL!! I don't know how it ends and don't care! I NEVER switch films off, but god I couldn't be disturbed by it any longer!!

This movie isn't about ripping off other movies like '28 Days Later' or 'The Omega Man'. I know nothing of the origin of this piece except for some informative reviews on this very site, but having seen the movie it's more than clear that this isn't the case. This is a rather unique movie in which Will Smith was marvellous. His portrayal of 'the last man on Earth' is fantastic, and his spiral into loneliness inspired madness is not only believable but touching. This is not about his situation; it is about the man. However I personally would have liked to have seen more of this from Smith; and the obvious intrusion of the 'CGI monster' does remove you slightly from the realism of the piece. That said, the backdrop of ruined New York is truly magnificent. Overall I feel that ‘I Am Legend’ is definitely worth watching, but with it’s strange mix of genres may lose some viewers.

Not my cup of tea but I was compelled to watch it to the end! Very good acting by Will Smith - worth a go.

I was surprised by some of the very negative reviews for this film, and I think the reason for many of them is that this is NOT an action packed zombie flick. Rather, the first half of the film is what some would describe as slow but I would say is thoughtful. It is an examination of loneliness and the effects it has on an individual and is also used to establish the back story through flash back and old TV footage. In my view this portion of the film is actually quite interesting, better in many ways then the second half which is much more traditional fayre. The film holds up pretty well until the final chapter when it takes a turn for the worse and seems to have been finished off as quickly as possible. It also rather feels like a cop out, but these points withstanding it is a thoroughly enjoyable and slightly unusual example of this kind of film, especially the first half.

This could have been a very good film - the idea has been done before but there was scope for something that could be good. Instead it just was wishy washy and tried to get too romantic about the past. The end was also rushed. If it's on it's something to watch but don't go out of your way

Now I like Wil Smith as an actor, but this was a real Leg End of a film....real drivel, not improved by the special effects.. Avoid this drivel (just another Zombie movie).

This was a good film up unti the end and I thought it was such a waste of the whole plot. It would have been good to have seen him be able to bring the zombies back to being human again instead of dying right at the end of the film, I was expecting a bit more and felt let down.

Please can I have the two hours of my life refunded. Will Smith deserves better than this and although his performance was OK, the plot line is weak, the pace geriatric, the cgi not believeable, some of the concepts downright ludicrous and at times irritatingly inconsistent. If you want a post-viral-disastar movie watch the more gripping, tense and believeable 28 Days Later (not 28 Weeks Later) or opt for the more comic couch potato style that is Shaun of the Dead

I did enjoy this film, I liked Will Smith in it and I am not really a fan of his. I have to admit that I skipped a couple of chapters after around an hour because it felt like it was a little slow and could have done with the editor cutting a few more scenes out.

A story of a survivor in a zombie world. Nicely shot, well acted, the zombies don't take too much footage so the movie gives an atmospheric horror feel rather than a full on blood and gore drama. But since there are many movies on the same theme there is no element of surprise and at times even becomes a bit boring. Nonetheless, worth watching once.

Great film but I was a nervous wreck by the end of it. I had to hide behind a cushion at one point because the tension was just too much to stand. I don't like horror films and I am a bit of a wuss but I have to say this did leave me with scary images in my head on going to bed. Will Smith was great in it as usual and his body was looking fantastic, always worth a view!

A good film that should have been a very good one. What a shame a little more time had not been spent developing the story and characters in the last 3rd of the film . Will Smith delivers a solid performance but the film is let down by the very poor computer generated 'infected'. The ending was unexpected, but it would of been more powerful if there had been more development in the relationship with Anna. It all happened too quickly. It felt at times like I was watching a big budget version of 28 Days Later as there were numerous story parallels, but 28 Days Later delivered a much bigger punch than I Am Legend without a big named lead role and on a shoestring budget.

WOW!! What a film, this was a really great film in every way, you almost think that something like this could really happen. Really strong and awesome film. Would watch again for sure.

This is not the usual Will Smith offering, but actually shows he can act. He manages to make the movie watchable and does well to portray a man alone. This is no classic or even an all out action packed blockbuster but it is a decent waste of an evening.

Ok film but only if you like this genre. Excellent acting however i prefer Will Smith to play a character a bit more tongue in cheek then then the serious role he plays in I am legend.

Its Will Smith..... an ok movie exactly what you would expect my 12year old loved it about the right age group, typical story line only difference being THE 4FT 5 STONE WOMAN DIDNT BEAT UP A 6FT 22 STONE BODY BUILDER AND SAVE THE DAY..... WTG.

Initially this is an excellent film. Like an hour and 10 mins of slowly building, Smith showing he can actually act a bit and the scenario/sets working very well. Not many hollywood films have so little dialogue. Then however the 'blockbuster films are 90 mins long' time limit came up and the whole film wrapped itself up in a flurry of weakness in about 15 mins. if this film was an hour longer it would probably be at least a 4. As it is its just disappointing and a wake up call to hollywood - stop painting by numbers.

OK - it's riddled with bits that you know will happen but that doensn't stop the tension and the fine acting of Smith making for a compelling rollercoaster of a film that kept us captivated thoughout - recommended

if you like special effects and action movies like terminator this may be your thing but ultimately this is immensely disappointing. A really rotten and implausible movie. Such as he's the last man on earth but has all this food, technology, electricity, the fast car, latest mobile- it's just pure rubbish this film.

Will Smith gives a fair performance as Dr Robert Neville is this modern adaptation of The Omega Man, which apart of the last 20 minutes I am afraid to say is a letdown. The human race is facing the consequences of ‘acting god’ in an attempt to cure cancer and finds that an apocalypse has killed the majority of the human population. Dr Neville remains in New York, which he is calling ground zero seeking the cure. The film opens with some high speed car action in a Mustang, nice car, wrong movie! Dr Neville then goes about his daily routing of seeking food and seeking subjects to test his vaccines, so we need to know this as part of the story but for 60 minutes, NO! Tension and interest are only provided in the movie when the Dr interacts with the mutants who cannot come out in light so giving a game of chess to the Dr to get back to his base, which at times he does not and thus must face the consequences. Hollywood is at it again; how can you be two meters away from someone, unload an automatic weapon at them and miss, yawn, come on Hollywood we are all getting tired of this. We also find the Dr injured and only able to crawl very very slowly in the daylight but then in the dark he is suddenly like a new man. Yes the thought of being caught by the mutants and killed will have given him adrenalin and helped him walk instead of crawling but more water into wine stuff, Hollywood at it again. Have a sleep for the first hour then enjoy the ending.

I felt this film was a bit slow and lost the plot a bit. The best thing about it was Will Smith's acting and the German Shepherd dog. Exciting action in part but the CGI characters left a lot to be desired. Not one for the library

The whole family really enjoyed this film. It made us jump in a few places. This is an excellent film to watch. All ages were rivited to the screen.

This movie is a kind of a remake of the Omega Man (1972) which starred Charlton Heston. The storyline is very similar, Will Smith, playing the role of Charlton Heston. I personally think the original was better. If i had to chose a modern similar remake of this story, i would pick 28 days later, it is a better movie.

I was really looking forward to seeing this film but was very disappointed. it seemed to run out of steam and despite good cg effects, it never really became believable. Though I usually rate Will Smith, in this film he was rather one dimensional and didn't take the viewer along with him.

I was warned off of this film by loads of friends, but decided as usual to make up my own mind. I am glad I rented it now as I thought it was a very good film. Jumpy in places, bit too much CGI but given the circumstances, understandable. Will Smith is basically the only survivor in NYC after a virus breaks out and New York is ordered to 'move out'. Will and his dog wile away the days stockpiling food and other useful items from peoples deserted homes, whilst trying to find any other survivors. The only people left in the city are the infected zombies that feed on flesh but cannot go out in the light. As one of the people responsible for the break out, Will trys to create a cure to the infection whilst struggling to deal with the impending breakdown that living entirely alone for over 3 years would no doubt bring. Excellent film considering the majority of it is acted out purely with Will and his excellent dog! I have never seen Omega Man or anything else in which to compare this too, but enjoyed it and would recommend it. not one to watch with small kids tho.

this film was very disappointing, I'm still trying to work out what the point is, very dull I even washed the dishes during it and didn't miss anything.

I didnt go and see this in the cinema, so I rented it! Will Smith is excellent in this film, he played the serious role very well. It wasn't THAT scary but the monster people did make me jump a few times ! When Will Smith had to kill his dog because it was infected, Oh my god I was crying, then it was him, the last ever person on the planet, how he dealt with it was amazing thinking people are actually there and the emotion was great...The ending was powerful and actually made me feel like the film was meant to end there, cos sometimes in films the endings are rubbish bit this one was perfect I rate this 5 star because there is drama, horror, comedy and action all in one film, well worth a watch! *****

Another end of the world humans gone mutant so Will Smith can save the day. Found myself doing other stuff while it was playing such was my level of interest. No good scary moments, and totally predictable. 3 stars is probably generous, but the effects and make up were good.

I was so disapointed with this film, i usually love Will Smiths films, but this was depressing, and after the first 10 min the whole cast seemed to disappear. It was a loanly feel bad film. And the ending was disappointing too.

This really was a dull film. I couldnt help but compare it to 28 Days Later, which is very similar in story and setting, and I am Legend came off badly. Where 28 days had spectacular, atmospheric empty city shots, Legend was green screen nonsense, reducing any believability. The acting was a bit on the cringy side, and...maybe I am a bit movie-jaded...nothing actually happened. Instantly forgettable.

Amazing, even the girlfriend liked it and thats saying something, even better than what i thought it was going to be.

You know, film makers should eschew unnecessary CGI, for done badly (as here) it detracts from the film and breaks the 'suspension of disbelief'. Apperently, this is a third film outing for the story, although I didn't recognize it as such, and the first part of the film is pretty impressive (if overly loud - the car chase needed me to turn down my surround sound). But the Zombies are just implausible, obviously computer generated and this reinforces what is a fairly far-fetched plot.

I went to the cinemas to see this film and it didn't disappiont. I thought the way which the director jmade you feel like New York was empty was brilliant, you get a real sense of just how isilated it is. Will Smith is as brilliant as always, i didn't like it when he exploded at the end, i wanted him to live! If there were any bad pionts it would be the CGI zombies, they weren't very convincing. This is a brilliant film to watch, it makes you jump, think about life and enjoy the ride along with Will Smith!

This is a fantastic film, me and my mum fully enjoyed this title. If anyone says it is not a good film then I dont know what they watched. It is a very brillant verison of the omega man and the last man on earth. The reason I have said that is because it is based on the same book that the omega man and last man on earth was based on. If anyone who says it is not is wrong

I was a bit reluctant to sit and watch this film, but am glad I did. A very deep and dark concept but teaches you another level of hope. If you want a film to stretch your mind and touch your emotions then watch it. Very good

to be truthful the movie is not thaaaaat impressive. same old stories of zombies and WS is the hero that kills them all. I didn't find it that special or different from other boring zombie movies

..... but who ever passed those zombies as acceptable needs speaking to, sternly !. OK so we all know the're not real, but were they supposed to be straight off of a comic strip ?.

I'm still thinking about this film, long after we finished watching it. I'm imagining how it would be if this reality came true - Will Smith has the ability to make the audience empathise with his character's plight and although the storyline in theory is farfetched, it feels very believable as you watch the film. This is a hauntingly chilling film which delves into the psychological effects of loneliness and fear. There are some jump out of your seat moments and some moments of quiet reflection - both work well. Highly recommended if you want to watch something thought provoking.

I am never one to slate a moive i only watched on a plane, and was after a wonderful holiday, however, having also watched this movies on my big screen, it was not 'too bad'. There was elements in it where you just want to throw something at the screen, But overall it is a decent movie. Sadly though the storyline has been done to death on much better movies, some of which are true classics.

Fab film but a bit of a let down on the ending however still a well worth film to watch!

This is the poorer cousin of Danny Boyle's 28 days. Despite some well executed special effects these alone are not enough to carry the film. The ending was especially disappointing. My recommendation would be to hire 28 days instead which I found brilliant and is idientical in terms of plot. What I am Legend lacks is any sense of suspense and to make the viewer really care about the central character. Disappointing and not recommended.

Kind of reminded me a games you would play as a child pretending you were the only people left alive on earth. I thought it was very well done, although I believe the book is a lot different and much better.

How can you possibly spend millions of dollars or so? Watch all the bad movies and learn from it, it may be useful while you write dialogues for this one. Well, take a computer game renderings and film a hopeless actor against a green background. Not a single thing in this movie is real or feels real, Will Smith in particular. Well, he does look so great when he exercises - of course, everyone pours a bottle of oil over their bodies while exercising in the morning. The perfect punchline for this movie? IF MC DONALD MADE MOVIES THEY WOULD LOOK LIKE THIS ONE...

Good film & a very touching story. But the ending wasn't a strong as expected. Some of the CGI could have been better. On summery, great film....made me jump loads & the cushion had to be at hand to shield my eyes from the screen more than once!! Once again, Will Smith was super.

Good old Will Smith does it again! Gripping throughout and a decent ending. I liked it alot....especially as I know the words to Shrek too! (the joy of having kids!). Definately worth a watch.

Will Smith plays an excellent part as Dr. Robert Neville, the lonely protagonist of this film. The film itself is highly entertaining and well worth a watch. The only thing that could have benefitted this feature would have been the use of real-life actors for the infected, much in the same way as 28 days later. The CGI rendered creatures Will Smith is pitted against are, at times, laughable. Such a shame as this could have so easily been a classic.

Only 3ppl inwhole film and i heard that this was the film of the year? Get lost absolute crap!!

If I had known it was a zombie film I wouldn't have rented it, as we had it and had already started to watch it we stuck it out... considering I cannot stand Zombie films it was better that bearable. I would warn not to expect too much if you are like me in relation to Zombie/horror.

This film is awful! The book however is tremendous. Save youself the trouble of renting the movie and read the book in the library - it's far more enjoyable! This film is half-baked and extremely disappointing.

Basically, if you read the book, and enjoyed it, don’t think that at any point in the film the story is going to follow the book. The two are nothing alike, and even though at time it does seem that the films story is beginning to follow the books, it doesn't in any way. Apart from the 'last man on earth' element to the story. This however is not necessarily a bad thing, as the film, on its own terms, is actually very good. It’s atmospheric, at time intense, and surprisingly emotional, with great acting from Will Smith, effectively capturing the loneliness (and possible madness?) of his character. During the day, the film is suitably eerie, and when at night, or out of the light, the monsters, although not 100% realistic looking, are effective as they are agile and move in a way which would be difficult to capture with real people, so serve their purpose well. All in all, in order to fully enjoy I Am Legend you must approach it as just a film, and not an adaptation of the book it was (apparently) based upon. In doing so, there is a lot to enjoy here.

Had expectations of the film and was disappointed

Not an outstanding film - but quite good and a bit different.

If you like films that focus on a solitary character whose only companion for most of the film is a dog then this is the film for you. The main interaction that the character has is flashbacks to what was and I like films with more interaction between characters. I don't know what I expected but I guess I assumed from the title that the main character would be a leader, a hero who would have a following etc. Instead the film portrays concepts of loneliness, solitude and loss. This film is a bit dark and I made the mistake of sitting down to watch it on a Sunday afternoon, its more of a Friday night film. Only watched it to the end to please other half as I could have turned it off 20 mins in, perhaps you need to be a guy who dreams about being a sole survivor and hanging on to life in the face of adversity to appreciate this one!

I was left feeling insulted by this film. I wanted to phone the makers of 28 days later and insist they start court proceedings for plaigerism. Once again the yanks have got away with taking an amazing original idea and passing it off with a big name and some expensive product placement as their own. Will Smith is enjoyable to watch as ever but can't make up for this poor copy of a film that was groundbreaking in its originality. 28 days shows this film up for what it is.

first off let me say a few of my friends watched this and i had mixed reports,all i can say is you have to watch it and make your own mind up....i really did like this,i understand that some say the human cgi characters were silly but i think that it was well done..not as sugar coated as the omega man but a good film none the less,well paced but i felt a tad short,get this movie and just enjoy.

I enjoyed the intensity and pace of the film. However, the build up to finding out what is out there could have been stretched as, when you see the 'big threat' it doesn't seem that frightening. However, an enjoyable romp while sampling beer and pizza if you suspend a little bit of reality.

I seriously couldn't get enough of this film. An amazing performance by Will Smith and such a great idea. Having seen the Omega Man, it really brings it upto date and does perfect justice to the earlier films. Really really good.

I didn't think i would like this film but i really enjoyed it! For a film about one man and his dog it is done very well!

This is not a horror movie. This is Sci Fi with scary bits! Well crafted with enough tipping of the hat to previous examples but different enough to keep it entertaining in its own right. Well worth the watch and shouldn't give anybody who likes Sin City, Hellboy or Shaun of the Dead nightmares.

Good film my goodness I jumped a few times

Boring and ridiculous; the best thing in it was the dog.

OK, you kind of know the plot before the opening titles but the way the film cleverly reveals the way in which this very possible nightmare comes about is extremely watchable. The images of a deserted New York were fascinating and makes you think how you would deal with the situation. Glad the Holywood machine didn't ruin the plot too much with an over the top ending (well not too much!). Overall, a lot better than I thought it would be.

Loved the special effects. Really showed what a brilliant actor Will Smith is. Highly recommend it.

Excellent film. Was not sure about it at first but it is really gripping. Such a shame that I didn't get to see it in the cinema as I am sure it was much better on the big screen.

We have a cure for cancer announces Emma Thompson in a rather odd little cameo as a doctor as the start of I Am Legend . It seems they have manipulated the measles virus with a 100% success rate .Wow we think except the movie cuts to three years down the line to 2012 And Dr Robert Neville(Will Smith) Is wandering around a deserted and frankly shabby looking New York( expertly rendered by Lord Of The Rings lens man Andrew Lesnie) hunting deer along with his faithful Alsatian pooch Sam. Putting out a message over AM for other survivors to contact him it would seem he is all alone in the city. Excerpt he isn’t for we soon discover he is a brilliant scientist attempting to find a cure for a virulent disease that has wiped out nearly every human being on the planet. Apart that is for the ones who have been turned into sunlight phobic ravenous flesh eating zombie /vampire thingies . Night time is therefore is not a time to be hanging around the streets ( rather like some areas of the U.K.) so Dr Neville retreats to his former home which conveniently has a laboratory in the cellar as well as electricity , bolts down the windows and doors and carries out his experiments on animals and specimens of the infected he has ingeniously captured . I can fix this he mantra’s as we observe flashbacks to the initial outbreak of the disease and his attempts to get his family to safety. Dr Neville is slowly going ga ga we observe as he interacts with shop window dummies he has placed around the city to maintain some semblance of normality .This section of the film is actually the most effective. Will Smith really gets to show off his quality as an actor and the relationship between him and the dog is revealed to have real depth. The film struggles when Neville has to confront the creatures. Apart from one very tense scene in a dark tenement building the action just doesn’t convince. The decision by director Francis Lawrence to utilise CGI for the night dwelling beasties is a disaster. They just aren’t convincing .They would be a poor effort for a video game let alone a major blockbusting movie. The film also loses focus for the last third with feel good guff about colonies of survivors and Bob Marley CD,s , though Smith tries manfully to make it believable , it just doesn’t sit right. I love end of the world apocalyptic fiction and movies , but this adaptation of Richard Matheson’s novel by Mark Protosevich ('Poseidon') and Akiva Goldsman ('Batman & Robin,' 'Practical Magic,' 'I, Robot,' ) just does,nt work . They haven’t remained faithful enough to the original novel for me .I prefer the previous adaptation “The Omega Man” which is also flawed but far more powerful. Having stated that there is enough here to make I Am Legend worth watching at least once. Visually it’s stunning -the pathetic CGI monster people apart - and Will Smith gives an admirable performance …as does the dog. The end of the world just seems to bring the best out of some people ….and canines.

A bit far fetched. What happened to all the people in the cars and shops and on the streets? However, Will Smith's performance was so powerful that we kept on watching it to the end. Must have taken a clever lot of backroom people to create the sets etc.

Watched the film with my kids. We all loved the film, although youngest hid when the house was being attacked!!! Film is viewed when we travel in car as it keeps everyone quiet (apart from me as I am driving!!). This film is recommended by the whole family.

Good film fantastic special effects - will smith is at his best

Unlike most other zombie or vampire films I Am Legend contains compassion and is not all about someone blowing monsters heads off with a shotgun. It is a story about the last man on earth fighting for the survival of the humanrace with the help of his dog Sam. In this film will smith is not a cop or an FBI agent, he is a scientist. The film is very interesting and contains stunning scenes of a deserted and overgrown New York. It is a very good film so sit back and enjoy!

I was really looking forward to this on DVD, and thought it would be a really good film. (The interview with Jonothan Ross made me want to see it as the clips were so inticing) But it seemed to be just a mad man talking to dolls and his dog. There were some good bits, and its worth a look, but dont get your hopes up. A disappointing end, a boring beginning, and a middle which really upset me.

I'm not into 'zombie movies' and all that type of thing but this is different. Well acted and keeps you interested. I'd definitely watch it again

Really enjoyable film - thought provoking with enough action and a great performance by Will Smith. He's the only man left in Manhatten - in the day. At night he hides away and infected humans rampage. It's all Emma Thompson's fault for trying to cure cancer. Instead everyone gets the rage, but rather than go all 28 days or weeks later with actors looking horrific in grissly makeup and gore we get the lamest CGI since the first Hulk film. But if you can forgive that as a disappointing distraction, it's still a good watch.

The film was well produced with good special effects. The film lacked a few more people in the story and the ending was a bit abrupt and unexpected.

Will Smith does his usual stuff in this film. It was ok, although seeing wild animlas running around America was a sight!

What would have been an average 3 star film is really brought up by a phenomenal Oscar-worthy performance by Will Smith. Otherwise enjoyable, but very weak on plot, and, after all, the third film version of the novel. (Check out Last Man on Earth, and the Omega Man.)

Thought this was boring, although my daughters liked it. Prob a young person's film.

Better than the Charlton Heston version which I loved. Will Smith shines and the CGI is great too. I know the author of the book hated this movie and films always generally differe from the book anyway, but it was enjoyable.

Thoroughly enjoyed the twists and turns in this, a little slow at times but recommend.

Will Smith plays Robert Neville, the last survivor in a post-apocalyptic New York, but there's still danger left on the city streets. Without giving away the plot take heed of the surroundings in this film it explains more than what the character sometime say. Its quite deep and I suppose believable. The film actually has 2 endings, the original will be the one you see with a hired DVD & can leave a lot unexplained, however a clue would be when Will Smith revisits the same sites in the film check whats different in the surroundings and ask youself why? With this in mind this ending should fall into place quite nicely.

CGI ANIMALS just do not work and took any realism that may have been. It doesnt help that the worst actor is also the star. $100 mil and they couldnt get a trained lion or two are you kidding................ If a dog is the best thing in a film then its just not a good film ...

The film is nothing like the trailer, it's all a bit weird! I didn't really believe any of while watching it. There are zombie creatures in it and it has a really weird ending, overall just really strange film!

as a fan of will smith I was a eager to see this film. it definitely is watchable but I must admit I was a bit disappointed in it after hearing a lot of hype on it.

The premise of the film is sound but the shallow storyline for saving the USA (?the world) is not... sigh. Reasonable special effects, but Wil Smith's character's slip-ups are sloppy & irritating. I'm so glad I didn't waste my time nor hard-earned cash watching it at the cinema.

Film Ok; but it has all been done before - nothing new here!

I'm not a big fan of scary stuff, but I thought this film was excellent. Very thought provoking. Though the plot may seem like it's been done before, the special effects were great and there were some surprisingly moving scenes. Loved it - and might have to watch it again from on the sofa, rather than behind it.

The film is quite dark both physically and atmospherically. Will Smith gives a good performance but the CGI in this film looks haphazard and rushed letting it down. As a reworking of the original film, ‘The Omega Man’ with Charlton Heston, itself based on the story, ‘I am Legend,’ the original offers a better viewing experience and frankly a better lead actor. However, made in 1971, you do have to forgive the effects. This new version is watchable and Smith in no way disgraces himself. The film just falls dismally short of the hype it received when it was released.

Will, no nonesense Smith, reminiscent of Independence Day characterisation. Pure unadulterated entertainment. Nothing more, nothing less.

Unusually, for a Hollywood product - and one starring Will Smith - this film demands your attention as not everything is signposted. Through a series of flashbacks, we learn that Will Smith is the sole survivor of a cancer cure gone horribly wrong that has turned the populous into rampaging mutants. The production and effects are top notch: the mutants are truly menacing and New York, having reverted to nature, is stunning realised. Will Smith also subdues his wise-cracking persona and gives a serious performance; when he's looking for his lost dog in a dark warehouse, you can almost believe that he is really scared. The ending is a bit lame, but to be honest, it couldn't end any other way. Good viewing.

Really wanted to see this one. Found it very slow. Nowhere near as exciting or interesting as expected but maybe I expected too much. The ending was a bit predictable but good. Good human angle on the usual major disaster movie.

I am legend on its own is a good film. Will Smith plays the part well. I just found it to be a bit predictable. Having seen '28days later' before I am legend, i feel it is somewhat over shadowed by it. The story lines are similar and for me 28days is a much better film. I think if you haven't seen 28days later then you will like I am legend, but the other way round i feel you will be dissapointed.

Very poor - not a patch on 28 Days Later from which this seems to steal a substantial part of the plot but without the dialogue or storyline! couldn't wait for it to finish - even that was expected in typical holywood fashion.

Below par post apocalyptic that tries too hard to be 28 Days Later. The Good: Not much, but the dog out acts everyone in it. The Bad: CGI, this is literally one of the worst examples I've seen in a long time. The screaming freak people are shoddy beyond belief and about as scary as a cheese sandwhich. The Ugly: The girl! Needed something far better to pass the last half hour.

Heard some mixed reviews of this film, so was rather open-minded when it came to watching. Dissapointed in the film.

this film would have been rated 2stars. I love will smith, and think he did another spectacular performance - his charisma just oozes through. However, I felt like i was watching 28-days later, albeit less gruesome scenes. Nothing really stood out for me and just another version that we've already BEEN THERE DONE THAT.

A good action horror film although the story line is slow at times. If you love Will Smith at his best again then you will tolerate the less positive aspects of this movie. An elderly friend found the dark blackness of some scenes, of which there are many, all too much and had enough after 10 minutes. Despite this however once started it is worth watching to the end.

This is a little cinematographical treat. Whoever would have thought that the use of a computer would outshine the acting and the story line? For all it's faults in continuity and woodenesque performance, those empty streets and powerful images make up for a so-so film. Make-up, filming and CGI combine to make this a memorable film, which unfortunately is more that I can say about the storyline which is predictable and plodding, and the use of filming in the dark to increase tension, all it acheived is a poor image and as I have said, that's all it has.

Not a bad bit of nonsense if you want to put your brain in neutral, an empty NewYork is impressive & Will Smith looks good but he's acted off the screen by his dog.

This film promised so much and righ up until the ending it was not dissapointing, I was really annoyed by the fact that the guy who wrote the script was obviously running lat and when he was writing the ending he had to go shopping with the missus as it was almost like he could not be bothered to write the ending. What was he thinking. Basically it frustrated me.

Not as good as 28 Days Later (which I would give 4 stars) which it resembled closely. Had good moments but frustratingly never pulled it all together. Missed the mark. Watchable but missable

Great movie one of Will Smith best.

The 1st half of the film made me think 'its really not so bad, actualy kinda good'' but then i found it kinda went spiraling down hill when he comes in contact with 2 more survivors, the way they interact just didn't feel right at all.. I think it could have been a much better film than it is.

This movie made me feel on edge even in the lighter moments, I just kept thinking something horrid is going to happen any second. When it finally came I was a little disapointed. Could of been a better ending.

Will Smith pretty much is just him in the film. Excellent performance by him. Enjoyable and tense at times. The film gripped me all the way through. This is a must watch film. And it will have you glued to your tv all through the film.

This was one of those movies everybody was banging on about when it came out and so...for that reason...I chose not to go and see it. When films come out with as much hype as this did it is easy to get swept along with it all so I like to take a little time...wait fo the dust to settle....and then watch it months later with an open mind. This is a good film and very watchable...I'm not really a big Will Smith fan but he plays his part well. All in all we enjoyed this movie....was it as good as everyone said it was at the time? Probably not but the beauty of waiting so long is I don't remember .

One of the most disturbing films I have seen in a long time. We always think finding a cure for cancer or other terrible illness like Aids etc would be a wonderful thing but we need to stop and think. Is playing God too ambitious? I think the character Will Smith played was to be pitied - would it have been better to perish with his family. Was the anti-dote he might have found worth the empty life and all the infected people he killed trying to find the cure?

Without Will Smith this film would have been a disaster. Straight forward story line with no real surprises.

I am legend is very slow to get started and therefore, fairly boring at the beginning. As you learn more about the character and his situation throughout the film, it improves a lot and Will Smith's performance is good (apart from the bizarre repeating Shrek dialogue moment). This film has a good premise, great special effects and definite 'jump out of your seat' moments but overall is dull.

Yes maybe a little predictable but fun and entertaining and Will is great as always. Yes rent and eat that popcorn.

This film is a straight 50/50 split of 28 Days Later and 12 Monkeys.A lethal virus,a guy with a possible solution,lots of flashbacks, and lots of zombie types. The completely desolate New York is very eerie,as was London in 28 Days Later.But so few people means so little plot.Half the film is just Will Smith talking to his dog and a bunch of mannequins between all the flashbacks. I'm sure that this film has its fans but quite honestly,it doesn't deliver anything anything more than the two afforementioned films.

This was a strange starting film but was 1 of those films that shows what has happen before in stages during the film .A lot of people i know have watched this film and was a very good film to watch is a must see.

Will Smith sleepwalks his way through another CGI extravaganza, but what is most obvious is that rather than I, Robot with zombies this is actually a straight rip-off of 28 Days Later. All the same elements are there - the 'rage' virus, the post-apocalyptic setting, the eerie empty city streets of a major world capital - but ultimately the film fails because not much actually occurs to develop the narrative or the central character. Sure, the effects are virtually (although not entirely) seamless, but I for one did not feel enough empathy with Smith's hero to understand why he sacrificed himself at the end (although it was a bit more obvious why his dog had to cop it). In the end, I Am Legend goes to show that even with the Hollywood A-lister and multi-million pound budget, it is not so easy to match what Danny Boyle managed with digitial video cameras and lots of extras in red contact lenses. Despite the plagiarism, I Am Legend could have been terrific but a lack of real imagination meant it was ultimately disappointing.

the film was alright not as good as i thought it would be.

I loved the way that Will Smith carried this film on his own, just him and the dog throughout was great. The plot was, I felt, a little like 28 Days Later, which I thought was much better. The story moved fairly slow but not in a boring way and I liked the relationship between Robert and his dog and the use of flashbacks to explain the story so far. What I felt let down the film in a big way was the CGI, which was just not up to scratch and just didn't gel with the rest of the film (I'm talking about the deer, zombies and zombie dogs, not the empty New York scenes, which were great!. Overall a decent film but not one to get too excited over.

I watched Omega Man about six months ago and was impressed considering it was an older film (ie slightly dodgy special effects etc). Yes, it does appear slow if you are more into fast-paced action but you just need to open your mind a little when you watch it. Now to I Am Legend. Knowing the storyline from watching Omega meant I appreciated this film for what it is rather than constantly waiting for 'something' to happen. Will Smith is absolutely amazing in it (as is the dog, which others have mentioned). He may be the only character for the majority of the film but it really doesn't matter due to his great performance. Definitely worth a watch but see Omega Man first and I think you will appreciate this film more.

I like Will Smith films in general..he's sort of Tom Hanks of today but better looking if you ask me. I Thought this was a very average film and I would give it a miss unless you really like the concept of the story.

I thought that it was an ok remake of a good film

No a bad film, wouldn't rent it again, but saying that loved the dog and good special effects. we all enjoyed it over a drink and food.

IT'S always great when you have low expectations of a film, and then discover that it's a lot better than you had anticipated. Such was the case with I Am Legend. It's not that it was a Will Smith vehicle. He's not bad, if a little one-dimensional and capable of playing just one character. It's more to do with the fact that it was touted as a Hollywood blockbuster, and that usually means an absence of thought-provoking ideas. On the contrary, I Am Legend is stuffed with them. The first surprise was just how bleak it all was. Just one man, a scientist (or self-taught scientist, I think) and his dog, in a city rammed full of freaky half-humans, out to get him in the same way as the zombies in 28 Days Later. The scenery looked fantastic, with flora gaining a grip in a deserted New York City where, on occasion, deer and other animals would roam, taking advantage of humanity's disappearance. I loved the relationship with the dog, which was so crucial to Smith's character's sanity. I was left wracking my brains trying to remember a time when an animal was given such a central role (no, not Lassie). There were lots of nice little touches with it. The half-humans were capable of learning, rather than just being available as cannon fodder. And I loved the way that, although he was desperately lonely, when he meets people for the first time in three years, he can't get along with them. The film is very much an argument for allowing science to correct science's mistakes, rather than reaching for the usual Hollywood default option, which maintains that God and freedom are all you need.

This film is brilliant! I'm not a great Will Smith fan so was scepticle but I was glued from start to finish. Hope they make another!

I can't even describe how let down I am after watching I am Legend. The only thing that kept me watching was the dog. Come on people where have all the good story lines and plots gone.

Excellent film with good combination of storyline and action, one to see.

Hi this was disapoiting film I wish I never had on my list

This is a good, simple, staightforward tale of a near, closely futuristic apocalypse, caused by the shortsighted application of science i.e, a doomwatch scenario. However, the slow moving plot is too often compromised by a welter of more interesting distractors. I found that I had to watch it several times in order to stay with the plot, and, even with the third time, I was still finding it difficult to avoid folowing up these distractors. For instance, the main character appears to have two original Van Gogh's in his flat, one of which I know is at present in the Tate Gallery in London. Following on from this there are references to the significance of Bob Marley, and to the possible existence, or not, of God. Such things definitely divert one's attention away from the main plot of the film. Overall, I felt that this story could have been depicted in a much better and more powerful way, although I wouldn't call this a bad film.

a typical hollywood vehicle for one star. The premise for the story is good but it goes absolutly no where. Fancy effects only work for so long and then a very weak story line comes through.

This film has been done over, and over and over again. It's another zombie type movie. The basic story line is the same, a virus or something strange happens to humans that mutates them to flesh eating (humans only) zombies. Small details eg location, charactures, past, present, future are all that is different. Having said that i did enjoy Will Smith's performance but that's about it. This is the type of film you would watch with friends late at night, bag of pop corn and really take the piss out of the crapy zombies.

This film is perfectly watchable if you like Sci Fi. It is entertaining and there isn't really a dull moment, but it is mediocre. The ending is the usual unresolved and predictable American rubbish. I would rent it though, because it's OK escapism.

Will Smith is a great actor and was looking forward to watching this movie, but seen it all before and the story is nothing new. 3 stars given cause of Will and his acting ability but for me the story is weak

An overhyped film that is not very original and is predictable.

Starts off great but slows down about half way through... ending is poor

Opening shots and you think it will be another zombie movie where the end is shown first, only to show the over-gory events that led to this point afterwards. However Smith puts in another sparkling performance that makes you totally believe in his character. In his moving scenes were he repeatedly watches old re-runs of the news and sleeps in his bathtub, you sympathise with him and feel his isolation and vulnerability. It makes you question and realise what we take for granted would be gone. Further on in the movie the plot starts to unravel until things start to take a turn for the worse. Twists and turns appear where you least expect them and the toll that his predicament has taken on Will Smith's character becomes evident. The end, however, seems a slight letdown and almost forseeable. Although deffinately worth watching, the film feels like it's only on for half and hour and the end feels like it comes all too quickly.

The title says it all. Will Smith is a Legend. Absolutly Fabulous. A must for any Smith fan.

Unfortunate nights viewing I was bored within 15mins

This was a touching and tense film with a great central performance from Will Smith and his dog (boy that pooch can act!). Haven't read the book or seen previous film incarnations, but for my money it is definitely worth a viewing.

A BIT SLOW AND NOT AS ACTION PACKED AND INTENSE AS I EXPECTED IT TO BE.

What a God Damn shame! For the first half of this film I was totally involved with Will Smith verging on proper acting for a moment. The director Francis Lawrence proves yet again that he can be highly creative with a big budget, as he did with Constantine, but why oh why do the bad guys have to be C.G.I.? This totally killed it for me. Del Toro showed that with (I'm guessing) a smidgen of the budget that you can do zombies with real people in Blade 2 and they are so much scarier. New York looks good without people though!

The book 'I Am Legend' is one of my top 5 books. The film 'I am legend' changes everything that's important plot wise in the film. There is no reason they couldn't have made the film the same as the book. And as for the ending? sell-out trash. Don't watch it, read the book to see why Hollywood is going down the pan creatively. Please, somebody actually make a film of the book and follow the proper story, it will blow this travesty away.

Not quite what we expected, however throughly enjoyed watching this movie. Very good film.

Why do Aliens always start their Armageddon attempts in New York? Are New Yorkers really so horrible that Aliens feel compelled to wipe them out first? Why not land somewhere that could do with a spot of Alien 'cleansing' (suggestions on a postcard to....) A poor, poor movie - don't bother.

Really enjoyed this film. Will Smith played an excellent 'Omega Man' and his dog was marvellous too! Really enjoyed the plot and would definitely recomnmend this to anyone.

This took a while to get going but with some really edge of the seat moments

not the best will smith film. lacked depth and the plot was not very good.certainly built up to be a bit of a blockbuster only to prove to be a good watch at a strech.

I'm sorry I didn't see this at the cinema as the scary events and distorted gollums would really have made an impact on the audience. Somehow the small screen doesn't do the movie justice. An interesting premise with a sensible ending. Truly a horrific scenario for humanity.

Boring very over rated very slow going not his best film by far

..I really enjoyed this movie, Will Smith was great, as usual. A little shocking at times but an amazing climatic ending. One to watch.

I rented this film because I was assured it was brilliant and as it had Will Smith in I didn't really doubt it as he doesn't tend to do rubbish. However, watching this film was a complete waste of an hour and a half of my life! The film had no real story and the slight story it did have was never actually explained in any detail so I still don't really know what it was about. Unless you are an absolute die hard Smith fan I really would not recommend this film.

In the book, our hero realises (just before he is executed) that, as the last man, he had become the monster; It's not acceptable to change the plot this much and still use the title of the book. However, the film is good to watch if you like apocalypse sci-fi, despite the huge plot change.

Was expecting to be whowed by this film after hearing everyone raving about it, sadly i felt a little let down. Luckily the film only lasts 1hr 30 mins which is good because i think if they tried to drag anymore out of this story it would have been a nightmare. Will Smith put in an OK performance as Robert Neville but its not a film i would watch again.

What was really interesting about this film is how the world can become obsessed with finding cures for illnesses and it can go horribly wrong. The plot of one man and his dog living for survival after New York is taken over by a virus. The zombies were class and the most touching moment in the film when he has to kill his dog after it gets infected. I was gutted the dog was killed but it happens in films all the time apart from K9. The extra of the annimated comic strip when the virus takes place in other parts of the world are really entertaining to watch.

The special effects were poor, the acting was good though. It was just like the US version of '28 days later'.
