American Gangster  (2007)

After one of the most explosive opening scenes you're ever likely to see for a long time,this slow burner gets into stride and takes you with it. This story of the rise and fall of black 70's Harlem druglord Frank Lucas is loosely based on fact.Denzil Washington stars as Lucas and gives his best performance since his potrayal of a low-life 'tec in Training Day for which he won an Oscar. Lucas is a conservatively dressed small businessman on the surface,but lurking beneath this facade is a ruthless heroin wholesaler who undercuts all competition with deadly uncut smack straight from the poppy fields in war ravaged Vietnam, He has local politicians,the army, and cops in his pocket,and with their help sets about wiping out his rivals. The subplot concerns honest cop Russell Crowe who is given the task of putting a squad together in order to clean up the Ciy's drug problem. The film looks brilliant. Scott and his team have pulled out all the stops in portraying seventies New York in all it's corrupt, faded glory.The cast are all excellant and the script never lets them down for a single second. Though violent at times,the film is never gratuitous as it blurs the line between corrupted and corruptor. All in all a tour de force from Scott, and the best gangster film for an age. Don't miss it.

Did my fellow reviewers watch the same thing? I left half way through with my friends as it was pure rubbish. You could relate this entire film to the feeling many of us could relate to at the end of the lord of the rings films, frustration and a thought that it will never end. Every scene in this film lasts 100% longer than it needs to. The acting is dull and uninspiring. The film orientates itself around killing and drugs. Yet another to add to the list of so many other unoriginal plots. Transparent and see-through. Avoid.

I found this film a struggle to continue watching until the end and i thought the last 30 minutes was the best part of the film.

The reviewers said this was the best film of the year so i thought 'wehey this must be brill, great actors, big budget the lot' How disappointed i was then that an hour into the film we were so board that we did the unthinkable and walked out of the cinema, we couldn't care less about the characters, the only thing i was left wondering about the film is where i could send my tickets for a refund, and whether i could sue the cinema as this film is surely covered by the sale of goods act, and was definatly NOT fit for purpose!

I have just started to watch films full time, which means at least watching 4 movies a day, also i give reviews for other newspapers and other companies, it has been more than 1 year and this is the best film i have ever seen, Denzel Washington does some excellent acting, being based on a true story, the film gets a 5 out of 5.

After reading all the negative 0 and 1 star reviews for this film I felt compelled to write a quick note. It has confirmed my belief that it is not people who should review films but the people who should be reviewed before they are allowed to enter a cinema screening. Not only to save them wasting their time but also to prevent them wasting the time of others by disturbing them when they leave half way through a screening because it's too long of all things which seems to be the main gripe in the negative reviews Cutting to the point anyone who doesn't rate this film at the least a 3. A doesn't deserve to call themselves a film fan and B Doesn't know a great film when they see one.

American Gangster....quite simply the best, most intelligent mob flick to be made since Goodfellas. The acting is immense, Denzel Washington plays the part of Frank Lucas like no-one else could, he brings his own personal style of style and swagger to the role...whereas Russel Crowe potrays Richie Roberts as a good man, struggling to keep doing the right thing. The scirpt, although not particualrty lightning quick, takes it times to develop and show the development of Lucas, through starting out as a mere driver to becoming the most powerful man in New York City, the script has no need to rush you through the events, it takes the time to explain all details and leaves you feeling like you know the characters inside out. This film is for people who enjoy high class cinema and film making, its not your crash bang wallop car chase kind of film...it is a cinematic masterpiece that is to be savoured, taken in and spoken to your mates about the next day....in my humble opinion this is one of the best films, not just of its genre, to come out in years.

I got to this see free as a preview, but it is definitly worth paying for. Being a 20yrold female i did wonder if it would centre on a lot of violence but in my opinion it doesnt, anything seen is relevant to the story. I read an interview with the daughter of the real life denzel washington and its not quite as glamourous as the film, but then it wouldnt be as fun would it.

I would definitly reccomend this, and take yr girlfriends along as im sure they would enjoy it too.Denzel and Russel gave excellent performances and at over 2hrs long i didnt feel bored or that the ending was rushed, was a pleasure to watch and i will definitly watch on dvd.

Very dark film. i didnt enjoy this one at all, however, I have heard a lot of people have loved it. I think you will need to watch it to make your own mind up on this one.

defintly not for girls...i normally like a guys kinda film, but this one i just couldnt get into...!

Being a big fan of DW and loving gangster movies I went to see this expecting to love it, not leave 25 minutes before the end because i was falling asleep. Despite being based on a true story (and having the fabulous Idris Elba in the supporting cast) this was a boring, self indulgent plod. Russel Crowe's character was just an a*se and there was no interest in what happened to either his character or Denzel's, or why. Even my husband and brother in law (who came with me) were bored. Very disappointing indeed.

This was supposed to be the best film of the year, in reality it was the worst film I have seen in a long time. I love Denzel but even he couldnt make this movie worth watching. 2 and a half hours of my life I'm never going to get back. What a waste!!!!

I initally watched this in the cinema on release and didn't find it to be on par with classics such as The Godfather. Scarface etc. Actually I was quite disappointed as I had high hopes of the Washington - Crowe collaboration. However I decided to rent it for the extended version as I had heard good things about it. Although it is approx 30 minutes extra in length, it was a much more satisfying watch then the cinema release. So my advice is if you are yet to watch the movie - then watch the extended version as it wont disappoint!

Unlike this film , this review will be to the quick and to the point. Dull, dull, dull, dull, dull !?! Decent acting , well directed , but so slow and boring. Halfway through I started clock watching, not a good sign. Totally over-rated.

The leads deliver solid performances but something about this film just didnt work - im not sure if it was the tedious pacing , the unimaginative soundtrack or the constant unintentional reminders from the director that serpico,french connection and scarface are all vastly superior films - not a good idea .

I found my attention wandering a fair bit , the main characters just werent interesting or charasmatic enough to hold an audience for 2 and a half hours and the director seemed unsure about how to portray any conflict and contradictions in the characters.

Josh brolin does a nice supporting turn as a corrupt cop and there are some nicely shot scenes for sure but id be surprised if many cinema fans over 30 werent dissapointed by this drug crime saga by numbers .

Its all been done so much better before.

As a 49 year old film fan, I have admired Ridley Scott for as long as I can remember but I found nothing to like about this film apart from his capturing of the late 60s. He's trying too hard to keep with the trendy, complicated, dull way of story-telling. Get back to reality Ridley - go with your heart and not the dollars!

Unlike other reviewers, this movie resonated w/me on more of human level and less on the gangster theme. It's as if Ridley Scott used the latter as an excuse to explore the duality that is inherent in all of us and the often subtle shades of gray between what is considered good and bad in our society. The story itself was beautifully portrayed by Denzel Washington as the family-oriented yet ruthless drug dealer and Russell Crowe as the straight but womanizing cop and neglectful parent. The story raises the question of what is 'good' vs 'bad'? Are they merely a social construct impeding our natural human tendencies, or perhaps, simply one and the same inherent in all living beings. After all, how do we reconcile the behavior among very human primates who lovingly care for their young but will not hesitate to brutally kill and eat the young of other primates? American Gangster is one of the few Hollywood gems that explore the deeper, often contradictory nature of human behavior, and in my opinion, far surpasses other films in the same genre.

American gangster is probably one of the films of 2007.Saying that though..this isnt on a par with it's peers..i.e Goodfellas,Scarface,Carlitos way,the godfather etc. It falls a bit short of those classics but is prob on a par with say The Departed. It's still a top movie..the plaudits wil go to washington but crowe puts in a fine performance as the cop on frank lucas trail. Some good supporting characters too. A great movie and one of 2007's best..go see

Bordering on being epic in length, the beginning of this film is a little lost and confused, but it all comes together splendidly, especially the final 30 minutes. You simply can't help liking Frank, as Denzel Washington was the best cast choice. Reservations about Russell Crowe's part - I just couldn't help thinking that every time he appeared it was like watching someone trying hard to immitate Mel Gibson. Nevertheless, the film does deliver in every respect. Never mind late 60's/early 70's America (which is filmed with magnificent attention to detail), you just have to be amazed at how well they recreated the same era in Vietnam - that must have taken some serious effort. No gratuitous violence here either, just sufficient to let you know all the characters are terrifyingly real. Well worth viewing, particularly when you realise this is based on true events.

A potentially great story ruined by the complete miscasting of Denzel Washington as a hardened druglord/gangster .

So, finally watched this after waiting for so long and wow was i disappointed! Where was the back story? Where was the plot development? And what the hell was that buddy buddy bit at the end between Washington and Crowe? I almost threw up at the freeze frame at the end of the film. But seriously, this film is ok if you like retro sixties / seventies gangster flicks, lots of cool soundtrack music and great costumes, just don't go expecting a plot. Maybe there was just too much to cover in the time available, but at almost three hours for the extended edition, it's just not worth it....

Found it hard to follow the plot at the start. Average film but watchable.

I thought this film was quite entertaining but far too long. Worth watching but it is a bit slow at the start and takes a while to get going.

I finally gave up after 1.5 hours of tedium and turned this off. I have not seen such a bad film for over twelve months. Little action - difficult to follow.

American Gangster probably has one of the best opening scenes you'll have seen in a long time! Denzil Washington gives probably one of his best performances ever. Denzil Washington (Lucas) comes across as a small business man but hidden beneath the surface is a heroin dealer with many tricks up his sleave. Lucas, even though he seems only like a small business man, has many contacts within the services - cops...army. He uses these to his best ability but honest cop Russell Crowe has the job of clearing up the drugs on the street! I wouldnt highly recommend this, I am demanding you watch it! lol

I am not the biggest Russell Crowe fan but this was a great film and he was great in it. It was really interesting to see him and Denzel washington playing very different roles from those we are used to seeing them in. You end up rooting for both of them. Definitely a must see.

Not your typical ganster movie as its sharper and slicker then I expected. Playing out the true story of how America became flooded with heroin during the Vietnam War the movie is more a gradual tense build up of events rather than the all action shoot em out that comes with so many 'ganster' titles. Washington plays the lead with the pyscotic edge of a man who stores violent energy like a spring, a subtle undertone which plays out throughout the film and gives the character a more intellegent air. Crowe is palpable as the cop trying to right the wrongs of the entire NY police force and at times looses his way slightly in the manner of an actor not used to not being the centre of attention as the lead. one of the down sides is the lenght of this film. Given its slightly slower pace it seemed to be about half an hour too long and ebbs and wanes towards the centre. Like all true stories if you follow history then you know the end, but it has enough draw to keep you watching to see it even when you know whats coming. Not quite as pacy as 'Blow' but one of the more intellegent ganster movies of not just the year but the genre as a whole.

American Gangster is the movie equivalent of marmite. I hate Marmite and I hated this. Couldn't have cared less about the characters. Nothing happens but somehow takes over 2 hours for it to happen in. Not so much a slow burner as a turn over (and watch something else).

Never really appealed to me

I rented this dvd for my husband and did not intend to watch it myself. I am so glad I did, brilliant story and great acting as usual from Washington and Crowe. I would highly recommend this to anyone.

Not as action packed as Goodfellas or Casino. Solid enough movie but is a bit slow at times maybe because its based on a true story and not just all fantasy.

Brilliant performance by Denzel Washington in this true story about the first black gangster in Harlem. The film is quite slow burning and takes a while to get going (unlike Training Day where DW plays a similar character). Also, the end seems really quick and weak considering all the build up. However, it is extremely well acted and an interesting story. Well worth a look if you have 3 hrs to spare.

I was rather disappointed with this film especially as it stars 2 of my favourite actors Crowe and Washington. The story didn't seem to gain momentum until the final scenes, and neither of the main characters seemed credible to me. I think it was a case of too many ideas being run in parallel making the film feel disjointed. The reunion at the end between Crowe and Washington was almost comical, but not in a good way and I am surprised that some of the cringy script actually made the final cut. Worth a watch to see what you make of it yourself - it didn;t do it for me though!

Quite predictible but worth a watch

At 2 & 1/2 hours this was far too long but if you have the time to commit it gets there in the end.

I always enjoy a 'based on a true story' film, even if subsequent private research reveals the gaping holes. Good performances from Washington & Crowe, although I struggled with them both playing against type. It's a long film, but not one that had me looking at my watch. Certainly a remarkable story.

A fantastic performance by all the actors in this film....one you really get in to with its gritty action. Brilliant!

In my opinion the only reason this film gets high ratings everywhere is because of the acting. Washington and Crowe are outstanding but the plot is dreary and very boring. This is probably the most basic film narrative I have ever seen, there is nothing to it. No twists, no unexpected events and no real action.

theres not much to say about this film i thought it was poor.

I realise that this means I am beginning to sound like my father, but my gripe with this film is that about 90% of it took place in darkness - even the parts in daylight. There were actors who I only recognised by their voices. Surely the budget could have run to a few lights and even if it didn't I'm certain that Ridley Scott has a few mates and could have called some favours in. Couldn't he? This, for me, spoiled what may otherwise have been an enjoyable few hours.

A very slow storyline that comes to life at the end but overall well worth watching

I thought this would be action packed instead it was very long and dull, the only time I was interested was 10 minutes before the end. Overall I think I would have prefered walking the dog.

Not one of the best Denzel Washington films I have seen, but he does his best as usual in presenting a very convincing role. Whilst this movie appears to glamorise the 'gangster' rule and drug taking, the story tailed off towards the end and lost my attention. A very gritty look at America and the problems it faced in the past with drug smuggling and corrupt police. Whilst it did have an interesting storyline, I felt that the film was too focused on idolising a gangster that put himself above the law.

This film was an absolute bore!! I was expecting a really great film with Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington, so was really very disappointed.

This film is watchable but there are so many better gangster films than this. I did not think Denzel was the the right character for the film.

Very good, not too violent, many gangster films tend to focus more on the gore than the actual story line, where this movie was the ther round. I though Denzel Washington was fantastic in this movie. Well worth watching

This was OK, and entertianing enough, but it's a story that's been told a million times before. Denzel Washington brilliant as ever, but it was a bit slow for me - could have taken 30 mins or so less. Didn't find the Russell Crowe character terribly believable (Russell Crowe, what's the point with him anyway?!)

Most Ridley Scott productions are distinguished by the director's mesmerising ability to create a world you intuitively believe and instantly feel a part of and, on that front, American Gangster doesn't disappoint. Both lead actors are on exemplary form, with Washington just tipping Crowe on the charisma stakes. This is no 'cat & mouse' exchange between the two though and at times feels much more like a biopic. The only downside and the reason I didn't rate this as a 5 star film was the complete lack of any pay-off at the end of the film. Fantastic soundtrack, well crafted characters and an interesting storyline make for an excellent film.

Ridley Scott does it again! This is unmistakably a really good film. Filled to the brim with good acting talent, it a real pleasure to see the unfolding of this really interesting story. Denzel always manages to be the lovable rogue ( I actually fell sorry for him in the end). He manages to bring to the character, Frank Lucas a precision and complexity of a man that sees his vision for making a name and fortune for himself quite clearly. By far Denzel's best film, and best acting. Watch it, you'll be glad you did! I went to see it at the cinema today and struggled to get a seat as the session was jam packed, and it was a movie that certainly did not disappoint the masses as everyone was raving about it as I walked out the cinema.

This is one of those excellent biographical movies that just beg to be watched, and it does not dissapoint. Rising from the tough streets of Harlem in the 60's Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) becomes the new kid on the block exploiting the 60s trend for drug use, and an easy path from the heroin factories of Viet Nam, he employs his brothers and builds a powerful crime dynasty to rival, and better, anything the Italian crime families had at the time. Being African American, this distracted the police from relating him to major crime, as they only considered Italian mobsters capable of such large criminal activity, until the dirtier cops began losing their rake off, which made them finally sit up and take notice of this new kid. This is an excellent film, that does superb things without glorifying either side of the argument, it tells the story entirely as it should be told. A very high recommendation, unmissable.

Obvious, overblown, flabby, witless, sign-posted and simplistic. I'm getting really tired of these Cop v Crim flicks where the whole narrative is distilled down into two flawed characters doing battle. I guess it's well acted, looks good, but somehow it's just empty of anything original.

This film is the best film that came out since the turn of the millenium that should be held in the same regard as gangster classics like Goodfellas and Casino. This film is absolutely brilliant. The only thing i didnt like was that they made Denzel who is meant to be the baddie seem too much like the goodie. i found myself not wanting him to get caught by the police an hoping it would go on. However there are some bits where it shows how ruthless he is and that he is actually a bad person. This film is definitely well worth a watch though. GREAT FILM

Good business sense and murderous resolve raise Frank Lucas to the position of drug-lord in '70s Harlem but not without attracting the attention of detective Richie Roberts. With its setting and subject American Gangster almost has to be compared to The French Connection so let's get that out of the way first. Also based on a real case it's as well acted, less intense, much longer and there's no car-chase... which may be all you need to know- there are people who watch The French Connection just for the chase after all. Not to judge, plenty of people don't understand why I love science-fiction, but, safe to say, such viewers should pass. Sir Ridley Scott's film acknowledges the inevitability of such comparisons early when bent cops use their credentials to release drugs seized in the French Connection case and put them back on the street. The scene also establishes the pervasive corruption and twisted values in a police force where Roberts' honesty marks him out as someone fellow officers can't trust. Such ostracism could have been untenable but makes Roberts perfectly suited to pick a small drugs task-force and pursue the traffickers keeping the pushers in business. In this position he identifies the high-flying but low-key Lucas as a major player and the hunt is on. Russell Crowe, as the driven cop whose personal life is a car-crash, and Denzel Washington, as the kingpin, are excellent leads. Washington has the showier role, a devoted patriarch who is quite ready to do his own killing, and makes his contradictory character completely believable. This is the Crowe-Washington show, there are few moments when neither of them is on screen, and no-one's about to steal a scene from either of them but able supporting actors do make their mark. American Gangster lacks the sumptuous visuals characteristic of most of Scott's films but such riches have always grown from his attention to detail which is present in the convincing '70s milieu. Like David Cronenberg's London in Eastern Promises Scott seems very much at home in his setting (and period) which he shoots in an atypical but involving documentary style. Yet something is lacking. Cop-movie staples still work here to create atmosphere and, as noted, characterization is strong and the acting fine but all are used in service to a story that really isn't that involved. After the lengthy build up, the scene where Crowe and Washington share the screen is perfunctory. Subsequent events are described in a caption but would have made an involving epilogue or even a more interesting and original film. One man's absorbing is another's slow and American Gangster can't avoid harking back to other, better, films (such as... er... The French Connection) which might explain mixed reviews. I thought it pretty good without being great- certainly an acting master-class well worth seeing if you appreciate the work of either of its stars.

From the very start this film pulls you into the dark world of gangsters, with the burning then shooting of the guy in the opening scene, shooting a rival in the street in broad daylight midway through the film, and some rather graphic drug scenes throughout. This film has great performances from Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe, and directed with a touch of genius from Ridley Scott.This film will live with you forever, as it has with me. This is truely one of the true great gangster movies of all time. Even better than the Godfather, and level with another great that is Donnie Brassco.

...and I don't mean that as a compliment. There are so many characters and so many subplots that even a marathon film like this can't make them meaningful. 'American Gangster' ended up being 2.5 hours of 'who cares?' Much has been said about the acting, direction, etc., in this film. For my money there were only 2 good parts - 1) cinematography: it was a good looking film, 2) Ruby Dee: Mama Lucas was a good character, everyone else in the film looked like they were sleepwalking their way through the script. Here, 'sleepwalking' *is* a compliment - the character Charlie Williams (played by the Terminator 2 guy) would have been more at home in an Austin Powers movie - he was simply a farce. Similarly, someone should have gotten a Razzie for putting Cuba Gooding, Jr. anywhere near this film. Mercifully he was in only one short scene, but in that scene he projected all the gravitas and inspired all the fear and loathing of my daughter's pet guinea pig. Other characters are ok to lame, including those of the venerable Washington and Crowe. Clearly the casting director selected two friends, who told two friends, who... I can't think of any other way 'George' from 'Desperate Housewives' got a part. Had this been under 2 hours and 1/3 the number of cast and subplots, it would have forced some directorial focus and stood a chance at being decent. As it is, though, this film is a wreck - I'm sure Ridley Scott would be embarrassed if he weren't laughing all the way to the bank. Thank God I chose the theatrical release instead of the extended version... (What am I saying? I should have left it in the warehouse.)

Loved it ,great story acting brilliant what more is there to say.

Power, drugs and corruption in this skillfully told, dramatic thriller from director, Ridley Scott. It's an admirable account of the life of Frank Lucas. The searing Denzel Washington acts everyone off screen, including the (for once) bearable and at times, thought provoking, toned down Russell Crowe. American Gangster successfully mirrors classics such as Goodfellas and The French Connection. This may seem tempting, but it manages to parallel them too closely and consequently, there's little in the way of originality and innovation. Although the film does falls short of its excessively hyped stateside grandeur and our eager expectations, it's still a very good film.

20 minutes was enough of this seedy rubbish. Alhough I like an action film this was salacious. The actors seemed to speak with their mouths filled with socks and all you could hear was an unintelligible mumble. All in all a very nasty film. Perhaps an interpreter would help to tell you waht the actors were mumbling about

This is a highly hyped film and although well filmed and acted, it is slow to get going and doesnt in my opinion live up to the interest that surrounds the film.

I absolutely love blaxploitation films & at first thought that this was a clever take on that era, until the end of the film when I realised that it was in fact based on a true story which means that rather than be based on the blaxploitation era - blaxploitation films were based on Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington). Washington delivers a sterling performance as Lucas & even thought you know he is an evil drug lord with seemingly no morals you still end up rooting for him as he actually comes across as likeable. Russell Crowe (who usually I can not abide) also gives a fantastic performance as practically the only straight cop in a corrupt department who is determined to get to the bottom of who is supplying 'blue magic' heroin to the masses. In short you HAVE to watch this film, you'll find it hard to believe that it is in fact a true story which just goes to prove that fact is stranger than fiction.

This film is set during the Vietnam war. The local don dies and Denzel Washington steps up and is soon flooding the streets of America with cocaine brought in by the US military from Vietnam. A straight and uncorruptable cop (Russell Crowe) is tasked with tracking down this so far unknown gangster. I really like this film. There is none, or very little, of the typical violence that you would usually expect from gangster films, but the story is very good and really well acted. Godfather / Goodfellas it ain't, but it is well worth seeing.

Normally not a Denzel Washington fan but he excels in this gripping (if rather overlong) film of the apparently true story of Frank Lucas. The horror of heroin taking makes it a good film for teenagers although there is too much sympathy for Lucas (maybe because the real Frank Lucas was involved in the making of the film) and you leave with the impression that there is everything wrong with taking heroin but, if you can get away with it, and go to church often enough, then selling it and making millions is not so bad - perhaps there should have been a little more of the horrors of his 15 years in prison to dispell any belief that drug dealing is cool. The script is faultless, as you would expect from Steve Zaillian and Russell Crowe manages a wonderfully understated performance.

If you waste an evening watching this you will seriously need to think about Getting A Life! After one hour of struggling to concentrate on it I still couldn't understand what was going on apart from Russell Crowe was a cop and Denzel Washington wasn't. There's little plot, no story and after 1.5 hours we finished our bottle of wine and went to sleep! Very disappointing as two great actors take the lead and we made the natural assumption this would be a superb watch. Would rather watch paint dry.

Thought this was an excellent movie with great performances especially Denzil Washington who is such a dynamic actor. Even so it was the actress who played his mother who grabbed every scene she was in. Wow ! I did think it was a bit long and for me the change in mood at the end let it down a bit.

When Frank Lucas says those immortal words you know he means business and that little speech could have been the catalyst for what should have been an all time great . A movie that had the potential to live along side Goodfellas , The Godfather and Donnie Brasco but for some reason American Gangster never quite reached the heights it should have done.

Nobody used to notice Frank Lucas, the quiet driver to one of the inner city’s leading black crime bosses. But when his boss suddenly dies, Frank exploits the opening in the power structure to build his own empire and create his own version of the American Dream. Through ingenuity and a strict business ethic, he comes to rule the inner-city drug trade, flooding the streets with a purer product at a better price. Lucas outplays all of the leading crime syndicates and becomes not only one of the city’s mainline corrupters, but part of its circle of legit civic superstars. Richie Roberts is an outcast cop close enough to the streets to feel a shift of control in the drug underworld. Roberts believes someone is climbing the rungs above the known Mafia families and starts to suspect that a black power player has come from nowhere to dominate the scene. Both Lucas and Roberts share a rigorous ethical code that sets them apart from their own colleagues, making them lone figures on opposite sides of the law. The destinies of these two men will become intertwined as they approach a confrontation where only one of them can come out on top.



Perhaps my expectations were too high about American Gangster. I thought that because it Had Denzel Washington and Russel Crowe as the leading men and Ridley Scott as director that this was going to be a classic. And don’t get me wrong , this film is very good but for some reason it does not quite have that Wow factor that the likes of Goodfellas had . The problem is that it’s not until the last 30 minutes when Lucas is arrested and Crowe and Washington are actually in the same scene’s does this really become a superb film .
On there own they are good but together there is a chemistry that the previous two hours was crying out for.
Also the much underatted Josh Brolin is excellent as Detective Trupo.



Ridley Scott is renowned for making long movies and The older i get the less i look forward to watching a movie that lasts three hours . For some reason the UK DVD release is 18 minutes longer than the cinema release because it contains scenes that were left out in the final cut .Surely they were left out for a reason. Why not put the scenes on the extras section on the DVD ?
I find a film this long can really test my patients but luckily American Gangster is good enough not to be clock watching film.

There is not a great deal of action in this and that may be because Frank Lucas was not your typical gangster . In fact I’m not even sure you can call him a gangster . He was a drug runner that meant sometimes he had to deal with the mafia .
What amazes me is how Frank Lucas ( real picture below) and Ritchie Roberts were not bumped off . Considering the amount of people they both pissed off they can count themselves extremely lucky guys to not have been the victims of avenge attacks.
Apparently they are both still alive and are good friends.



The best moment of American Gangster is when Lucas opens opens the doors of his local church to be confronted for the first time by Roberts. He knows then that the game is up and this is played out to the haunting sound of Amazing Grace coming from the church.

This is definitely a film i need to to see this again and maybe when i do i might change my mind but at the moment i cant help feeling American Gangster was a little bit disappointing .

Very rarely do you get a film of near 3 hours which keeps you so enthralled throughout. Denzel Washington plays the part of ' The American Gangster' with such carisma you feel compasion for his charachter in lieu of his victims. I would recommend this film to all.

So so disapointing. very slow I expected so mush more from director Ridley Scott and such a good cast.

This one boasts a star cast of Denzel Washington(Plays Franck Lucas, the gangster more powerful than the mafia in USA in the early 70's) and Russell Crowe as the cop hot on trails of the american gangster. Ridley Scott who has given the unforgettable Gladiator has directed this movie. DW grows to become the number 1 drug dealer in US by innovating things. He establishes his empire by bringing his brothers and cousins to work for him. RC whose personal life is in tatters is assigned to form a team to nab DW. the movie is about RW pursuing DW who is one step ahead, but in the end, predicatbly the good guy nabs the bad guy. There are couple of scenes which showcase the brilliant acting of RC (court room scene for example), but this is DW's movie. I aint a great fan of his, but it clearly is his movie, relegatng RC to second lead role. Watch it, if only for the taut thriller story it provides, but do not expect anything truly spectacular.... If it were not this director, then I would have rated this movie as a 4-star, but because of the high expectations set by the director because of his earlier ventures, you expect more taut a movie.

Absolutely uninteresting crap. Feel nothing for the characters, who come across boring and shallow. Lots of scenes are completely meaningless, and often lead to no resolution. Could have been half an hour shorter. Compared to 'French Connection', it's like comparing Jean Claude van Damme with Daniel Day Lewis. Please Ridley Scott: stop making films!

Great movie, was a perfect friday night. The acting was on form. If your into scarface and those types of movies, you'll like this.

too excellent for words

For me, this is astory, above all else about how the most intelligent people can blinker their own view of their own conduct. The central bad character, appears astoundingly shallow in his ability to allow his family to benefit from the total misery that he leaves in his wake outside of that family. That said, his nearest & dearest come across as not overly important to him - they are merely the nearest thing he has to something of real merit.

The title itself suggests the next Scarface, the plot the next New Jack City, yet in reality this is quite misleading and this is certain to take the shine off this rental choice for some viewers as in some respects it did for us. However, there are positives to bring back from this movie. Denzel plays the loyal driver (Frank, Lucas) and bodyguard of an infamous yet hugely popular gangster in Harlem in the 1970’s, when friend and boss, dies Frank decides to step into his shoes, eventually making his money and name through the Heroin trade. The story is slow and at first, not every scene appears relevant, after the first hour my wife and I were not exactly bored, but not entirely convinced. A sub plot runs alongside in which a sloppy but honest police officer (Crowe) is tasked with investigating the drug and corruption problems in the area, Crowe’s character was weak and this entire element offers very little other than slowing the movie down even more, at least until later on in what is a very long movie. The story is an interesting one and begins to come together if you stick with it before sadly regressing into a rather sudden and lacklustre ending. Many will enjoy the glimpses into the life of a drug lord but you should not expect high paced action or extreme violence, these scenes are at a premium and the emphasis is clearly on the drama, that’s fine in principle, but this drama and portrayal of a true story was not the most powerful we have ever seen. Trapped between two films maybe? 6/10. 3 Stars.

Great true story. Its hard to make epic crime films without over glamourising the characters and what they stand for. Its a well handled film with a great cast too and threads together many of americas most notorious characters and shows how celebrity and notoriety often court one another(Joe louis, Frank Lucas, Nicky Barnes). Denzel is great and Crowe holds his own. This will be a collectors item of most mob flick fans.

Excellent gangster movie. I felt I couldn't give it 5 stars since that may put it on a par with Godfather and Godfather II.Its not quite in that league. Nevertheless, a great night in!

I highly recomend the viewing of this movie..the story line is brilliand and well acted and the ending is great it leaves one feeling that this is most probably one of the best movies based on a true story to ever grace our screens... I HIGHLY RECOMMEND EVERYONE TO WATCH THIS...CORRUPTION AT ITS BEST AND ALSO IN THE END MONEY BUYS U EVERYTHING BUT NOT EVERYONE.

Excellent film. People who like watching decent movies with character building with plots will like this. People who have the attention span of a child should watch teletubbies instead or one of the many crap action movies out like Transformers. Agreed film is long but like Lord of the Rings it merits being long.

Great film well wourth a look.

It starts complex and hard to follow but then gets clearer and really makes you want to watch. Stick with it and you'll see superb acting from someone who is normally the hero in movies...

Okay lets start with the fact that this is a long film, ( i watched the unrated extended version), but that what dvd's are for you don't have to watch it in one go. It is a very good film, a great story, good acting and amazing visually, (thought the sound was poor though). Ridley Scott takes you on the whole journey for the life of the main character and brilliantly surrounds him with dealers, junkies, good cops and bad cops. see this is you liked films such as Dark Blue or Blow - i hope that the upcoming film Killing Pablo is as good.

ironically enough i normally have a real problem with films over 2 hours (low boredom threshold) but thought this was great. i'd read a lot of mixed reviews so went in with an open mind but eventually found the storyline and the acting thoroughly engaging. Crowe and Washington were totally convincing, and the film looks great. recommended!

This is by far the best film I have seen in ages! I don't usually like Denzel Washington but he played a completely different character in this. The storyline was brilliant, the acting was brilliant, the filming was brilliant and to top it all off it was based on a true story - that had an ending! Watch it, you wont be disapointed.

Big fanfare for the film, huge budget etc etc does it work? ABSOLUTELY ! Washington is silky evil and Crowe robust hardline copper ......you like the one and almost hate the other ......this is a great film .

'After one of the most explosive opening scenes you're ever likely to see for a long time'...this is what one of the reviewers has written about this flick...well, not quite. This is a well made movie and I enjoyed watching it for the excellent performance from DW and RC...but it is rather slow paced and from the violence point of view is not quite near Scarface or Departed etc. The cinematography and direction of Riddley Scott is top notch and performances are good but it may not be everyone's cup of tea...slow paced with little voilence but strong characters..

Difficult to follow especially the sound and accents used. Ran it again with sub-titles and this helped. But overall was very disappointed with the film.

Great film, great script and really well acted and deserving of all the praise heaped upon it. So, why didn't I enjoy it as much as I feel I should have? The only thing I can think of is that Denzel Washington is such a likeable guy and the character he portrays is played in a likeable way despite being a drug smuggling, drug dealing, cold hearted killer the line between good guy and bad guy or good and evil or whatever you want to call it is decidedly blurred. We're led to believe that the drugs being handled by Denzel's character are OK because they're pure and he's not actually hurting anyone yet when they start being cut up and mixed with other stuff by the 'bad guys' thats when it all goes horribly wrong. Like I say, great film but Denzels too nice though its based on a true story and the guy may have been like this...who knows?

This is a very good film and worth watching but there is one scene in a nightclub with horrendous flashing lights as a migraine sufferer I had to look away but still got an attack, if you have epilepsy or migraine DO NOT RENT THIS FILM.

We were really excited by all the hype this film created, however though the casting was fine and the storyline too, the film as a whole was a bit like reading a stephen King novel: too long and when finished no sense of satisfaction for having wasted time on it. Don't get me wrong, in it's own way it's a good movie but don't expect it'll enhance your life,

Entertaining, but requires perseverance. Too long, with Washington and Crowe miscast - they should have reversed roles. If you like drug scenes (cutting, selling and using - some graphic), few real action scenes, a slow build up and a biography of a drug-lord, this is for you. Somewhat disjointed, with an exposé of American cop corruption and extortion, with Crowe (unconvincing) as the ‘clean’ cop training to be an Attorney going through a divorce/custody battle (only a few scenes thankfully); and Washington (not scary or cold enough) developing his empire and engaging all his family to assist; meeting and marrying his new wife and importing pure drugs in the coffins of dead GI’s and selling better quality ‘branded’ drugs at a lower price and attracting the disdain of his competitors. The ending is mildly interesting - you will have to see it to find out why! As with most of this genre; the film could have been so much better with some good direction, better casting, more action, and thought for the viewer; it is self-indulgent at times, and lacks the CSI ‘bite’, style and HC charisma

I enjoyed this Ridley Scott marathon but it did leave me bored in parts. I managed to get to the fridge, make a sarnie, crack open a tinnie and still come back to the same scene! That aside, Crowe is good a the ever-so-honest cop who will not be corrupted and Denzil Washington is the crime boss who is a gentleman from the country and a nasty so and so at the same time. Very interesting for the fact that it is a true story about a gang boss who goes to Thailand and buys his drugs direct and ships it back through the US Army whilst Vietnam is in full flow. He then sells top quality smack at lowdown prices, whilst bringing his entire family from the sticks to work for him. Crowe then finds himself in charge of a unit of honest cops charged with bringing down the big guns. All the time this is happening there are crooked cops galore, led by a terrificly slimy Josh Brolin. Not as good as The Departed but if you like 'em long, watch the unedited version and get the beer and pizza in!

I ORIGINALLY THOUGHT NRUSSELL CROWE WOULD BE THE BAD GUY & DENZEL WASHINGTON THE GOOD GUY, SO WAS SURPRISED TO FIND IT THE OTHER WAY ROUND, BUT IT WORKS. JUST BE PREPARED TO COMMIT A GOOD FEW HOURS.

i had not seen or read much about this film before watching it and was expecting a straight up mob film (goodfellas, the godfather) but in fact it was quite diffrent and dispite the the reveiws i have read since i though it was a good film but i do think they could have spent a bit more time letting you know the charcters,

overall it was a good film but it did drag at the begining. but i loved it even though it was 3 hours long.

I must admit to being a bit of a Russell Crowe fan and no, it's not just about leather skirts. So, a true story based on the battle between the pure of heart good cop Crowe, against the clever and cool gangster Denzel Washington, combined with director Ridley Scott, I thought I couldn't fail with this film. It was so boring! I tried to be patient, thinking that the starting lethargy was careful scene setting but the film never got rolling for me. Peformances were sound enough and you did get a feel for the main characters and their motivation but other than that I thought it was dull, dreary, lifeless and did I mention boring? How it warranted an 18 certificate is beyond me too.

Not really into Gangster movies but this was ok my Husband enjoyed it so i would say its more of a mans film

A very long film but stay in there to the end. It is quite heavy going in some places but with out these moments the story wouldnt have been as good. It is a strong story with all the main actors Crowe ,Washington. Putting in yet another excellent performance. The main character will have you stunned ,loving him , respecting , hating, disbeilieving and back around through out the film. I would have given it a 5 star but i found the beginning a little vague. I watched the whole film again and with hindsight it makes another excellent movie. Powerful True story. It is bloody and gritty but so is life. Have fun enjoy.

i thought the first half of the filmwas ok if a little confusing.it took off a bit second half and i thought denzilwashington was very good.Russell Crowe looked a little lost in this role and overall the acting was good.the end was a bit limp tho.

I thought this was a fantastic film with Denzil Washington playing a cultured, charming on the surface quiet man who is a ruthless drug baron with no thought or conscience of the misery caused by the drugs he supplies in massive amounts (squalor ridden drug addicts shown in flashback sequences). Russell Crowe plays an un-corruptable NY cop at a time when corruption was widespread, totally dedicated to his job and the law to the point of losing his marriage, aswell as alienating himself from his colleagues. Both men are ambitious & brilliant at their 'jobs' but flawed too. Undertones of The Godfather and defniite must see film. I've read some of the reviews here and yes, one reviewer said Denzil and Russell could have each played each other's parts just as well as the roles they played .. actually, this is a very good point! Just enjoy an absorbing and really good gangster movie.

You have the main gangsta being a refined/gentleman who secretly has a CRAYS watch out side to him too. I think it was quite long,but i liked it.He portrayed a clever drug dealer who looked like he probably could run cartels,etc. Never really bored,and theres one or two action moments in it.

Not a film to be missed, great story and very well acted.

Quite simply a really good modern _ish gangster movie ....and its based on a true story !!!!

Denzel and Russell at their best, absolutely loved this movie, taught me something about american history.

Well not quite a review as it was so boring it is not worth typing much about it. What I will say is this. Why the hype! Because they had to sell it hard as it is. Think too long. Not much happening. Nothing convincing. And D.W. is absolutely unconvincing in his role ( nothing new there then )

....and engaging film based on a true story.Not being a big fan of Denzel (only sporadically brilliant) and Russel Crowe (as boring as toast in anything other than Romper Stomper) I was a little wary of this film. The two only come face to face in a scene towards the end of the film, which is the best scene of the film. In this scene you can tell that the two actors are thriving on each other's performances and are at the top of their game. Not a glorification of gangster culture nor an indictment just a genuinely interesting story, well made. The missus liked it too!

Definatley a good watch once you get into the film which takes a little longer than some.

This is a good movie. A little slow in parts but still very good and based on a true story which is great.

Unfortunately we chose to watch the 'extended Director's cut' which was a bit too long. Generally speaking though, an excellent cast (Crowe's performance was reminiscent of his role in LA Confidential and Washington was his usual, accomplished self) and some fine camera-work. Plot was fairly simplistic - it is based on a true story though - and the characters came across well. I would rate it about 6/7 out of 10. Well watchable!

All in all you must appreciate the film for what it is. Some may find it dull as for around the 1st hour of the movie, you are introduced to characters and environments. The movie is not what you would called ''Action packed'' but it still good to watch. If you are a fan of Scarface, The Godfather etc then you will want to watch this.

We found this film to have an excellent story but it isn't a film you can watch whilst doing something else. Great performances from Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe.

The movie was good but not godfather type good as I was hoping for

One of the best films I have watched..ever! The storyline, acting, photography..practically everything about this film is close to perfection. How this did not get into the Oscars I do not know. No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood will have to be very very good to have beaten this for an Oscar. I totally recommend it to everybody.

Ridley Scott is probably the most frustrating director to date. With such amazing classics under his belt as Blade Runner, Alien and Gladiator he also churns out mediocrity such as this, American Gangster. One paced, one dimensional and to be honest quite tedious. It tries so hard to be a Godfather or even an Untouchables but falls woefully short. A typical bad day at the office for Ridley, Denzal and old fat boy himself, Russel!

I enjoyed the film, but I watched it in the daytime and the scenes are very dark so I found it difficult to watch. Definetly watch this film at night;) Its a very long film and a bit slow to start but after an hour the film picks up pace! If you like Mob/gangster movies you will love this!!

I was concerned this would be too violent for my liking but as I love Denzel and Russell I thought I would give it go anyway. Slow start but good story and the cast are fantastic.

This is a big American gangster movie loosely based on real events. A black nobody (D Washington) becomes the black gangster of his time. Followed close behind by a mediocre detective (R Crowe) surrounded by crooked cops. Both drawcard actors put in some fantastic performances but Crowe already knows he's following in the shadow of Washington. It's not Scarface or The Godfather but this is a fantastic movie and deserves to be watched on the big screen.

Slow to begin with but gets more interesting. Denzel & Russell Crowe do a good job but it would have been more interesting if there was some type of personal contact between two during the movie to heighten any tension. I dont consider this a Gangster classic like 'Donnie Brasco' but is excellent for its recreation of 70's New York.

watching american gangster you really get a feel for the setting of new york and the era in which it's set. both of these things play a big part throughout, and it shows. denzel washington is superb as frank.the no nonsense drug dealer who wont allow people to take him for granted or muscle in on his patch. the theme of drugs along with corrupt cops all make for a very interesting and well thought out story.the fact that it's based on true events makes it even more so. i've been waiting for quite some time to see this now, and i have to say it didnt disappoint. for me it's right up there.

a bit toooo long for me, didnt hold my attention as much as i thought it would ,but interesting viewing

I found this to be a film that I got what I expected but then at the same time didn’t?! I’m not sure what I expected from a film called “American Gangster” but what I did get was a pretty impressive film.
It is a long film or at least there is an area in the middle that does seem long but there is no part of this film I didn’t like or find my self thinking 'when’s this going to finish!” I also love films were you are not sure who you want to win, the good guy or that bad guy. The film almost seems designed to confuse you that way and to not feel a complete resentment for the bad guy, which is usually the case.
I’m not going to give anything away so I will simply say, rent this and give it a chance!!

I'm not a big fan of Denzel Washington and as such I wasnt overly keen to watch this film, however, I'm glad I did. The story is excellent showing how Washingtons character climbs the gangster ladder (well leaps it really) and becomes one of the most successful/powerful drug dealers of his era, whilst Russell Crowe (the cop) does everything in his power to first identify him and then lock him up. It is a long/slow film and interest will rise and dip throughout the film, but stick with it....it is worth it.

I am glad I watched it..Definiate recommendation..Lots of blood though..But a really good storyline and excellent acting especially from Russell Crowe

I must admit within the first 20 mins or so I didn't think I was going to enjoy this film. However, I persevered and was well rewarded, after the initial start the film got into itself and was well worth watching.

brilliant film gripping from start to finish.

This is without any shadow of a dought the best film of last year, almost but not quite as good as Training day, and a shade behind his best film 'Man On Fire.' A well shot and good looking film that does a good job of convincing you that its shot in the 60's/70's great music and a murky seedy undertone which most other films miss, the only other better reprisentation of this era is the 'blues brothers' The 3 points however that i noticed where that 'RZA' from the Wu-Tang has a tatoo on his arm, this is before that movement, also there was no real sence of just how long lucas had been at the 'Drug Game' No sence of Scale of his empire, and you where left wanting more of a build up before the climax, almost wanting Lucas to beat the system and get away with it. 3rd point being that wilst crow's character was well acted i would of been quite happy to see less of him throughout the film, and you never really cared about him, i found myself looking at my watch looking forward to the film swapping to Lucas. Very good film though well worth a watch, just add the other films i said above to your list too.

I found it hard at the beginning to accept Denzil Washington as the bad guy, but as the film went on I believed in him. Acting was superb from both stars. A bit violent but that was to be expected.

I thought American Gangster was an excellent film. Not in the same league as Goodfellas or The Godfather, but a good film nontheless. Definitely worth watching.

This film reveals the highly sophisticated and intelligent portrayal of a black american (Denzel Washington) set in the late 1960's and early 1970's and how his ingenious yet somewhat callous methods of supplying class A drugs projected him head and shoulders above his competitors. His downfall, ironically, was the end of the vietnam war and the dogged investigation of his nemesis (Russell Crow) hell bent on cleaning up the police department taking their cut from the suppliers. Based on a true storey this film gave excellent viewing. It gave a romantic ending to this gangsters reign who, it's claimed, helped lead to the irradication of corrupt police departments throughout The States. It left the viewer to decide on the thousands of lives that the supply of the drugs helped destroy.

DENZEL AT HIS BEST AGAIN DO NOT MISS AVIEW.

This is base on a true story and is very good if you want to no what happened in the life of America’s number one gangster. That said if you want to watch a gangster film with bloody seen’s, extortion and other illegal stuff that goes on in most gangster films (like me) well it has a very slow start. So slow that you get to the point of wanting to turn it off and watch the godfather part 1, 2 and 3 again just so you see a gangster at work. but all that said this is a very good film if you have the time to wait for the good bits.

A good film, excellent performances all round (although, I noticed Crowe's aussie accent emerging occasionally!), but I I feel I've seen it all before really.. and it was way too long.

What a very good movie. Gripping from the start, right through to the end. Denzil is excellent, as are his fellow cast. Great!

I was up until the early hours as I simply could not stop watching. The film was superb but due to the fact that it is based on a true story amazes me. To think that a man such as Frank Lucas was real and the things that he done. This is not your typical gangster movie, it does have the odd scene of violence etc. I don't want to say to much as to ruin it, all I can suggest it watch it yourself! - 4 - 5 out of 5 from me.

Found the opening scenes too violent, the scenario too dark to see and the dialogue difficult to make out. Just not in the mood for it on an early spring Saturday evening so didn't watch very much of it.

Good story and amazing feat for a black man at the time.

Denzel Washington plays Frank Lucas wonderfully, a very cool calm gangster who ran a black american gang in the 1960's onwards. This was very unusual at the time as the Italian Mafia were the main gangsters at that time. He was the first drug baron to cut out the middle men and bring heroin into the States directly so he had a higher profit level and a purer drug. Wonderful film.

After a slow start, and thinking 'am I going to get into this movie' !! I got into it, although the last half hour was the best !!! Cant say it was one of my favourite films, but was left opened mouth at the extent and drugs being brought it and how they did it, unbelievable. Dont think this film will be to everyone's taste, probably with the 18 certificate a lot of people probably thought there would be a lot more guts and blood, I watched it on the recommendation that this was not the case !!! Not a 4 or 5 star for me, and have seen better films with Denzil and Rusell in personally, but each to their own as movie fans I say !!.

Denzel Washington plays a fantastic part in this film, reminiscent of classics like Goodfellas. Packed with action, bent cops, a subtle love story and a classic gangster tale with a twist. Russel Crowe also plays a believeable and well cast part, showing his acting versatility. A five star film from a five star cast!!!

Brilliant movie , just what we expected....

I just simply did not want this film to end!! It was interesting, brilliantly acted, great story line and for me the best film i have watched since Pan's Labyrinth. Certainly the best this year so far. Crowe and Washington were emmense. If you like Goodfella's, Godfather, Casino type films then this should be up your street.

Excellent performances by Messrs Washington and Crowe in this extremely well rendered set-in-the 70s gangster movie. Ridley Scott directs in his always stylish manner and tells the story about the first bona fide black gangster who got his gear direct from Vietnam. But boy, this film is long. Half hour shorter and it could be a 4-star.

Although based on a true story i found this film very predictable and expected something more from Denzil and Russell which was not forthcoming.Not enough action for me and found it hard to watch at times due to some slow scenes.

Absorbing film but we had to watch with the subtitles on to make any sense of it! Doesn't seem like the length it is - worth seeing.

I was bored watching this. Denzel turns in a great performance. Crowe looks out of practice and a million miles from his best. As for Ridley Scott - maybe he's making too many films. This one feels rushed and a missed opportunity. It could have been a Godfather-like epic masterpiece. Instead, it feels badly paced and as if the director made it from a great distance. A great shame. What a waste of talent.

I thought this was good but it is no godfather. Some of my friends who had seen this had said the middle was poor but I never thought so and I would defo watch this again.

It should be my husband writing this review as he liked it better than me. I thought it was good to see DW in a role where he's a baddie, but the film just dragged a bit for me. Also I didn't like the ending, without giving anything away, I think it should have ended at the point where it gave an update re what happened to the characters, but it didn't.

Really enjoyed this film, watched the extended version which I heard is best as it adds more context. Some of it was a little predictable and maybe stolen from other gangster flicks but overall a four star effort.

This wasn't as great as I would thought it was going to be, but still highly enjoyable film and not the usual gangster flick. Excellent performances from Crowe and Washington. I can't warrant giving it a full 5 stars, would place it at about 4.5 personally.

Pretty good in places but overall very gross. True storyline which is typical of USA soldiers and Army and not suprising!

I did enjoy this film. Having two strong actors can either make or break a movie but in this case it made it worth watching. Admittedly not a lot of action for actions sake as such but it was there where necessary. Good storyline but it seemed that the ending was a bit rushed. But hey! Can't have everything!

Yawn... This movie was way too long. I started to get bored quite quickly and I felt that the main character Lucas was totally mis-cast as played by Denzel Washington. He was far too clean cut and laid back, so the story did not ring true. The producers missed an opportunity to create a great movie with sub plots weaving together at the end to produce a climax finish.

This film gets 5 stars from me, mainly because I love a good gangster film. The acting was great and the (true) story was great, I was dissapointed when it ended!!!

This has all the hallmarks of an outstanding movie, with all the action and compositions you need for gangster films.

Really enjoyed this film, Denzil gives a mean performance.

Seen one gangster film and you have seen them all really. It just depends on the storyline, the acting, and who gets killed in the most nasty and horrible ways imaginable, because that's why we watch them. This film is a bit overlong for what is essentially about a good guy trying to nail the bad guy, and although the lead roles are well played, it's still just above average in the gangster style genre.

Felt Denzel Washington was not well cast in this - not scary/brutal enough! However, enjoyed the film with the caveat that it does go on a bit long without a hell of a lot happening. Think the director could have focused more on the seedier side of the drugs trade and the misery it causes, rather than featuring big houses, money and conspicuous consumption.

This film seems to be set at night most of the time but even when it is daylight it is still very dark and shadowy. After a while it becomes annoying trying to focus on who or where. If you dislike dark films........as in light and shadows........as I do, you might want to give this one a miss.

Maybe Futbar from Barnsley could have used the 2 1/2 hours to take spelling lessons !!! This was one of the best films I have seen for years and it's quite simple these days - if a film is not your cup of tea walk out and pay to watch something else in another screen - why waste your precious life watching something you don't like - or maybe you just like complaining !!!!

Well filmed, well acted and a departure from the usual DeNiro/Travolta/Tarantino efforts. Well worth watching. Plot jumped a bit from policeman Crowe noticing gangster Washington as a stranger in a crowd to suddenly thinking - 'gosh, who is he? I know he must be Mr Big'. Thats quite a leap of imagination. Also Denzel shots a guy in the head on a busy street where he is known and calmly goes back into his cafe for a chat with the family in front of everyone and somehow he is still not known to the cops?? I doubt it. They might not have been able to prosecute but they would know exactly who had done what. As the film made clear they knew what went on even if only to get a cut of the action. It made the plot not quite hang together and this film is supposed to be based on a true story after all So those we ommissions aside a good film and well worth hiring

A decent film. However, I had just finished watching series 1-4 of The Wire, and to watch American Gangster immediately afterwards was like comparing The Wire to The Bill. It is simply not possible to adequately cover a period of ten years in the lives of a drug lord and detective, in two hours. Saying that, I gave it three stars because I think if I hadn't seen The Wire before I would have quite liked this.

A flm that you could watch over and over.

This movie is a little confusing at the beginning but all is revealed eventually so KEEP watching. To see Denzil Washington as a baddie takes some getting use to. Both Denzil and Russell Crowe are truely believable characters. Excellently acted, making this true story even more watchable. Another Ridley Scott classic.

Good performances from Washington And Crowe as the movie captures the feel of the 70's. Only drawback was the movie was a bit drawn out in parts, cutting out half hour or so would have improved it's pace.

Until Frank Lucas, all crime was traditional and social (in the way th Masons are a social network): Frank Lucas was the Woolworths, the RadioShack, the factory shop of criminal activity. He 'cut out the middleman' - looked out beyond what he'd seen and been taught to be 'the right way' to do business. Robbie Richards was a typical, atypical Jersey cop. Robbie and Frank brought modernity and honesty to what they did. American Gangster is a by-the-book telling of the story of the two men. The action is realistic, the acting deliberate and paced, it's a good film. Frank killed, had killed many men: his drunks murdered more - Robbie screwed over his private life - that's the way it goes. Enjoy.

This movie was boring!!!! Russell Crowe was as dull as dish water for me. I found it hard to accept as a gangster film, more a slow burning thriller. With slightly wooden acting from all involved. The only good thing about it was seeing Denzel Washington playing the bad guy for a change. Just a shame it was in this and that I wanted it to just END! Not the worst film in the world, just very dull.

I have been disapointed before with recent great directors films and this again falls short of the masterpiece it has been portrayed as being. When expecting something outstanding you can only feel disapointed at good.

Ridley Scott has excelled himself with this superb account of the drugs boom brought to America by the VIetnam War. If you want to see who wins and loses in the world of drugs watch this film.

Slow moving for a Ganster movie and actually went to bed before it even finnished. A little dissapointed after all the rave reviews.

Starts quite slowly (we watched the full version - not the theatrical version) but I think it needed to give you a complete overview so you could understand the relationship between the two protagonists. Fantastic movie which, I hope, will also maybe make some think twice before dealing or taking heroin. A must see movie. Very violent - strictly ONLY for the adults.

I dont think Ive seen a bad film yet that D Wahington has starred in and this is no exception. Based on a true story it is both gritty and gripping. A little mildly confusing to start but the pieces soon fall into place. Russell Crowe also plays a good part as the 'good cop' There are one or two nit-pickingly dubious scenes which raise questions like - How was his cousin able to just wander off into the jungle when he was supposed to be a serving soldier ? Other than that, a thoroughly enjoyable film.

Absolutely brilliant you will not know where the 2 hours plus have disappeared to when your watching this movie as it will have you on the edge of your seat right till the end, the acting by both leading actors is supurb sit back and enjoy..

You need to concentrate a little at the start as things move quite quickly and are a little disjointed but it soon settles down and tells 2 stories in parallel (Denzel Washington's & Russell Crowe's) which will inevitably come together. You always feel like something really big is about to happen but it never really does. It just tells a story that leads to an inevitable conclusion. I't a good story though, and well told. If you're looking for an action movie, or a thriller / horror (it's an 18 !) then this isn't the one for you. Good entertainment.

I found this film a struggle to watch until the end and i thought it very slow but certainly worth a watch.

This 70s drama on the drug culture that was new york is superb. The opening scene of violence locks the viewer into a film that is absorbing right the way to the end. Crowe and Washington are both superb and the 70s setting is faithfully done. If you like tight dramas with a touch of violence then this is for you.

Unfortunately, not doing tumbles over this one. Failed to grab me in any way whatsoever, so I had to let it go. I quite possibly will give it the benefit of the doubt and will give it another go at some point, but only when there is absolutely *nothing* else to watch, and I've lost the will to live.

i could easily have given this film a five star rating if the story was based on the life of a good role model but sadly it is not but it was cleverly and factually portrayed. lucas thinking up doing business the way he did was exceptionally amazing, but simple using what you have to get what u need without complicating the process. i wish he used it to think up a way of getting himself out of that way of life and not bringing his entire family into it. well like its always said 'a mind is a terrible thing to waste', i wonder what the man himself is doing now if he is still alive but it goes without saying ' he did live' while it lasted.

Rented this movie expecting big things - 2 great actors in Denzil Washington & Russell Crowe, and the synopsis of the film made it sound destined for greatness.

All I can say is that it was a bit of a let down. It stinks of being a big budget, big star movie without having any real substance. Individually the 'stars' deliver, however collectively the movie just doesn't work for me. It's very slow and very very predictable. Shame.

If you want to see a very good film, stick with this one for the first 20 minutes. Once it starts to come together it is a film that I was glued to. I think this film is excellent and would recommend it very highly. A very good watch indeed.

I had read so many poor reviews in the press about this film that i wasn't expecting much but having seen it i am baffled as to why its critical acclaim was so lacking? It's slick, beautifully directed, with a top class cast who deliver superb performances. What i found most striking about this true story was the depth of police corruption and how this operated within the gangster/kingpin world - who were the real gangsters? Yes, it is a long movoe but i felt the story moved along nicely so i didn't feel it was long. It's a big story to tell and was done so with aplomb. Brilliant epic - i'm glad i wasn't put off by the critics or i would have missed a superb, cool, slick movie.

Denzel Washington portrays 1970s gangster Frank Lucas in a state of ennui- if this is how he is in real life at least they could have given him a personality. When he is making his millions Denzel just stares blankly ahead delivering a rather pat script.

Inevitably compared to Training day - Training day is a much better film.

Interesting to see Denzel Washington in a role like this, he's normally the good guy. Really enjoyed the film. Thought the way the movie was filmed gave it a very 'dark' and atmospheric feel.

This is definitely one of the best films l have seen this year. Yes its long, but it needs that length to tell such an fantastic story. If it was not true it would be hard to believe. Heroin being smuggled with dead marines back from Vietnam by an 'unconnected', in Mafia terms black guy who used to be a driver for the previous harlem drug baron. You need to set aside 2 and a half hours to watch it. With all good films that build a plot you need to have patience. Denzels character was 'understated' not over the top. But that is how it was supposed to be. He was obviously playing it how it was in real life. Russell Crowe gives a tour de force as the 'only' honest cop seemingly in New York at that time. The seedy back streets of harlem are vividly brought to life by the director. If you have some patience sit back and enjoy.

This is one of the best films you will ever see. Everything, from the production to the story is 100%. If you think this isn't your type of movie you need to think again. It is complex, human and takes unexpected turns that will keep you interested. It is a long film but NOT too long!

Didnt really think this movie was one a girl could enjoy but it was actually great. The name of the film is off putting making it sound common etc but the film and plot was original so I was impressed.

More documentary than entertainment okay to watch if you have little else to do.

I found this to be a very slow film. Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe were amazing and the story was good, but not as fast paced as I been led to believe.

I was very excited to watch this film as the high standard of film making that we have come to expect from these masters of their arts; Ridley, Denzel and Russell, was a mouthwatering collaboration. In many respects they do deliver, the characters, direction and funky soundtrack are great, although it is hard to rid yourself of the nagging feeling that you have seen it all before somewhere. However, as with Kingdom of Heaven before it, the impact is lost in the editing. Again it seems that Ridley made a better film than the one that was released to us. The most exciting, if perhaps implausible, plot twist when the central characters team up together is brilliant but bafflingly reduced to a montage sequence in the final 15 minutes of the film. What could have been the heart of the movie is sidelined to an after thought, as if they tried to include too much and ran out of time for the essence of the movie. A shame, but definately worth a watch.

The trailer for this film in the cinema was far superior than the actual film. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed it, not bad for a wednesday night when the TV's crap but glad I didn't go and see it at the cinema. The films alittle slow at the beginning and its no until 45 - 30 minutes before the end that things start spicing up. Its a film Im glad I watched/rented but won't be shouting about it and rushing to see it again any time soon.

This film is overlong and after 1-1/2 hours your mind starts to wander - I got up and started doing something else just to avoid DVT! It just about does enough to keep you interested. I couldnt help but keep thinking Denzil Washington is completely miscast in this film though. What saves it is that it is a true story so you forgive the dullness of it until the last 30 minutes when the film starts to come together and the action picks up.

RIDLEY SCOTT clearly can make two types of film. Great films - these are classics like ALIEN, BLADE RUNNER, THELMA & LOUISE, GLADIATOR - and Good films - like BLACK RAIN, 1492 CONQUEST OF PARADISE, BLACK HAWK DOWN, MATCHSTICK MEN, SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME, KINGDOM OF HEAVEN and even HANNIBAL. AMERICAN GANGSTER clearly falls into this latter category. There is nothing wrong with AMERICAN GANGSTER at all - it has good performances from RUSSELL CROWE, an accurate depiction of 1960's America (New York and Harlem), a Motown soundtrack. There is absolutely nothing wrong with any of this - you just can't help thinking that with the credentials of all the crew involved in the film (RIDLEY SCOTT, Producer RON HOWARD of APOLLO 13, Screenwriter STEVEN ZAILLIAN of SCHINDLER'S LIST, BRANKO LUSTIG, producer of SCHINDLER'S LIST, NICHOLAS PILEGGI - screenwriter of GoodFellas and CASINO) the film should've been even better than it is. RIDLEY SCOTT has assembled a brilliant cast of black American actors and DENZEL WASHINGTON gives a superb performance as Frank Lucas. The supporting cast of black actors is exceptional too - CHIWEITEL EJIOFOR, RUBY DEE, CUBA GOODING JR, JOE MORTON. The Motown soundtrack is very apt for the timeframe too, but because Quentin Tarantino used pretty much the same songs to even better effect in all his films - you hear Across 110 Street and you instantly think that it doesn't belong in anything else but a Quentin Tarantino film. I watched both versions of the film on one DVD - the theatrical cut and the extended cut, and there is not much difference between them. The Extended Cut has a few extra scenes of Russell Crowe's surveillance sting operation, a scene where Crowe hijacks a yellow New York taxi cab to chase another car, more scenes of DENZEL WASHINGTON at home. The best part is the extended end scene where Frank Lucas is released from prison in 1991 and Russell Crowe is there to pick him up, buy him a cup of coffee, show him how America has changed in the time that Lucas has been in prison, and there is a lovely scene right at the end where Crowe helps Washington cross a busy road, by putting a protective hand on his arm, to prevent Lucas being knocked down by a fast car. Yes, AMERICAN GANGSTER is a good film, but it is not a classic like the similar-themed MICHAEL MANN film HEAT (1995) starring AL PACINO as the cop and ROBERT DeNIRO as the criminal.

enjoyable but could have been an hour shorter and very enjoyable

Two versions on the DVD, so picked the longer one...glad I did. I love Denzel because he is one of those actors who can play just about anyone and the role of bad guy in this film was scary to say the least. Not too sure about Rusell Crowe's part. I think it could have been played better and by someone else but not sure who just yet. Anyway, that aside, the film was long and shocking in many places with some of the gun wounds being verrrry realistic. Good to see rap artist 'Common' as one of the brothers..he is going places ! Maybe not for the faint-hearted but well worth a watch !

Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe are 2 of my favorites movie actors however this film was really slow and to be honest I didn't care much about either of the characters so wasn't really bothered about what happened to either of them in the end. Shame that the script let them and us down.

but last 1hour is exciting...

It's a good 'un but for me just lacked something that stops it from being great ? If you haven't already get out 'The Departed ' or 'The Godfather' instead.

I rarely ever stop watching a film less than half way through even if im not into it I like to give it a chance but could not stand more than 40 mins, easily the most boring gangster film ive ever seen

It's true that you have to be prepared to give some time and full concentration to this film. It's not light and easy to watch but if you are looking for something to occupy your time and make you think a little then it's a superb watch.

Big names, good script, pacey direction, right length, brilliant ending, job done. Best film I've seen in a long, long time. To say more would require me to give everything away. You must watch this film. It's what movies should all be like. My family watched every minute in gripped silence. Then there was that 30 second silent pause as the end credits rolled - followed by a collective 'Wow!'

Not as good as portrayed, was expecting something as good as departed but wasnt a patch on it

This film was slow and too moody for me, consequently I didn't watch it all the way through. I was disappointed as I had hoped it would be ladened with fast paced action, from the outset. However, I will re-rent at a later date to give Denzil & Co another try.

Ah what a film. Takes me back to the excitement of seeing Goodfellas for the first time. Denzel is his usual steely self. Great cast, excellent music and all the action you could wish for to speed you from the opening credits to the end. Must admit i love New York today but damn what a dump back in the day!!!

Densil Washington is a convincing character who commands respect through his role throughout the whole of this film. I was drawn into his world and although it was violent in places I didn't think it was too much. I would definitely recommend this film if you liked Once Upon A Time In America & Scarface. This film, or rather this version, is ok, but the extended edition provides a great deal of depth to it that you simply can see in this amount of time. So try to get that one. Great performace, as ever, from Washington, but Crowe is also superb in this trying to be the one straight man in a pretty mean world. Good film...but could be better.....

great film lots of action. you will not be dissapionted

Although the opening scene of the film is very violent the remainder of the film is not as violent as I'd thought it would be - thankfully! A good story throughout and very well executed (excuse the pun) by all cast members. Russell Crowe plays a very good part, very well. The subject matter is handled well and there isn't too much focus on death, guns etc. Everything fits together and it's a well balanced film if you fancy a couple of hours (or so) of good, solid movie viewing. I'd recommend this film if you like Denzel Washington (who doesn't?).

Not sure if i will buy this one as it is a good film and well done. Just not memorable enough to want to maybe sit through it again and again. Anyway good cast and Denzel and Russell are very good in this and there is some parts of the film. Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott - you can't go far wrong can you? Sadly, yes.......... This is a really interesting true story about gangster Frank Lucas ( Washington) who decides to cut out the middle man and import quality heroine directly from Vietnam and flood the market by selling it at a lower price than his competitors making himself very rich and powerful in the process. Russell Crowe is the detective on his trail. Washington is excellent as always but Russell Crowe was either miscast or underwritten because his character just didn't appear to have a personality at all. It's a long film, slow in places, and just as it gets interesting it ends! This should have been an epic - it's not.

Slow, boring, no sympathy or empathy with any of the characters. We gave up half way through as we didn't really care what happened. Denzel washington is a great actor, but just didn't fit the role. The plot line was confused and meandering. At least we didn't waste the full 2 1/2 hours watching the whole thing! There are better gangster films out there to watch, don't bother with this one.

Now I can normally stay the course if a movie is long. This one nearly lost me. It starts with such promise, but just doesn't live up to it's suggested hype. I felt the whole affair dragged itself limply into the third act, whereupon we see some ripe acting and a couple of memorable scenes. All in all though, not one I'd go out of my way to see again. It's just never going to compete with the likes of Casino and Goodfellahs.

Really impressed with this film. I thought it was going to be yet another disappointment. Directors just can't seem to make them like they used to. If you enjoy the likes of 'goodfellas, casino, carlito's way' you'll enjoy this, worth renting! It's based on a true story too, therefore even more compelling, just wonder when someone will make a film about 'Mr Nice'?

Unfortunately I had already viewed this film and had found it boring the first time round, Not a fan of this one

Given that the film boasts two of the biggest names in Hollywood I had high hopes for this film. Broadly speaking it didn't disappoint although it is possibly just that little bit too long. Naturally enough the characters are developed so that you can appreciate what their backgrounds are, but it does tend to drag the pace down. If you are expected a lively film then you may be disappointed, but if you are looking for a good film then give it a go.

An innvigorating tour-de-force of a film that will knock you on your ass and keep you there for its 2 1/2 hours of pure joy. It is overflowing with fantastic performances and that guilty feeling that any effective mobster movie delivers; that uncontrolable careing for the criminal and his brood, no matter what travesties they have committed. Ridley Scott serves up one of his best films as well a peice of cinema for the ages. This is a serious awards contender and one of the best films of the year.

Lots of hype around this film, i can see why but can't say i agreed so much with it all. The main characters, crowe and washington, are beliveable, but they are great actors so you would hope so. To me this film lost it alittle becasue i found parts a little slow. It's not a flowing as 'the departed' and the it dosn't have that many memerable sceans. A change from the traditional Italian gaangster story ! Both leading actors giving a great performance. The scene is set in the 1970`s and you feel as if you are with them. I enjoyed this film and would reccommend it. Five stars for this !

Big names, big scenes, big story and big finish! Exactly what it says on the tin and although long at over 2 hours, worth the effort to watch. Crowe and Washington forever sparring to get the upper hand with a classic ending that must not be missed.

This film was very very slow in starting and then when it did get going i had lost all interest.

This was a long and complicated film but well worth staying awake for. Russell Crowe and Denzil Washington were superb. One of those films where you know the bad guy is really doing some bad things but you still kind of like him.

Denzil Washington and Russell Crowe both give tour de force performances in this very believable gangster movie. Apparently based on a true story Ridley Scott has produced an interesting and sometimes violent tale of a black gangster taking over the drug distribution of Harlem. What really sticks in the mind however is the corruption of the New York police force throughout! Obviously those who live by the sword die by the sword but not quite in this case as our 'hero' turned states evidence to bring down most of the gang bosses from Harlem at that time, so much for 'honour among thieves'. You have to nudge yourself from time to time to remember not to feel any sympathy for the main character, he was after all a ruthless killer and drug dealer. Satisfying and gutsy.

The modern day 'Godfather'. Great watch, in honesty, did drag on a little bit.... bit still very entertaining. Denzel makes the film, with more incredible acting.

Rent this and you won't be disappointed. Sensational, gripping stuff with great cast headed by Denzel Washington + Russel Crowe. Action-packed and highly recommendable.

This film is a slow starter and after 20 minutes I nearly gave up. So glad I didn't as it was a gripping and well photographed epic. It was still a little long and, considering this, wrapped up far too quickly and neatly in the last 15 minutes. Still, very much worth watching, especially for Denzel Washington who is just brilliant!

True stories often dont convert well to the big screen but this one does it better than most. There were aspects of the story that could have done with more detail but the film wasnt too hampered by this. Overall not bad.

I had heard many many good things about this film yet still didn't really have any expectations before watching it as to what it would be about etc. The casting for this film was amazingly well done. I don't think anybody could play an anti-hero the way Washington does. Even though he was the bad guy, I never felt anything negative towards his character and he played the part superbly well. Crowe was equally as good as the 'good cop' amongst the bad cops. The cinematography was good, the props and scenery all believable and the only reason I wouldn't give this film 5 stars is because I felt it took a while to really get the story up and running. That said, without the background of both main characters, the film would have lacked depth so overall I think this was a brilliantly done gangster movie and Ridley Scott should be applauded for a job very well done.

This was a good film that could have been so much better...Both Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe put in fine performances but the movie never seemed to quite come togther and seemed more like two separate films. Washington and Crowe's roles as Frank Lucas and Richie Robert's were both excellant but lacked the narrative drive it needed to really allow us to get into them. -Indeed it was hard to truly empathize wth either charecter as Ridley Scott was unable to give both roles as much depth as they warrented in one movie. What should have been a brilliant film was in my opinion an above average gangster film and certainly no 'Godfather' or 'Goodfellas'.

Wonderfully written, shot and acted. DW does a fantastic job of creating a sympathetic character out of what is in essence a murdering psychopath. Still don't really understand the point of RC though......

...but even average Ridley is above the hum-drum. Unfortunately this lacked the menace and bite of other mafia films. Denzel just seemed to breeze into power, which made it wholly unbelievable. Ridley, it's about time for another SciFi!

Although I have been advised that only 20% of this film is factual it is still well worth seeing and Denzil Washington is far better looking than the real Frank Lucas.

Far too slow moving, without sufficient character development. you really have no sympathy for any of the main characters, let alone the far too extensive myriad of others they briefly introduce seeminly just to confuse the viewer. Beautifully shot and evocative of the times, but the actual action and plot is lost in the scenery.

Denzel is one of my favourite actors, but this movie likes to come across as arty and well shot but the story isn't that interesting (despite being based on a true story). With a title like American Gangster I expected something along the lines of Carlito's Way, Casino or Goodfellas. But it's actually more like a period drama - this is not a kick ass gangster movie!! The DVD gives you the option of watching the theatrical version or unrated uncut version - so guess which one I went for, yup - the uncut version!! Just wasted 2hrs 48 mins on boredom. Sorry!

Brilliant good movie

Took me a while to 'get into it'and then before I knew it I was gripped.A great tale based on truth and thought provoking as to like in the USA in 60's and 70's.

Excellent old fashioned type of film.

This film was awesome! I was suprised it got an R18 rating. A bit violent in some parts yes, but very much in keeping with the realistic portrayal of the drug scene. I'm sure I've watched much more gruesome films than this with a lower rating. Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington play both male leads faultlessly. You both like/dislike their characters as their personalities and lifestyles are played using both professional and personal storylines. The film itself feels very realistic (probably because it's based on true events) and it's wonderful having the contrast of scenes in both Asia and the US - both feel very gritty and true to life. Would highly recommend!

Washington is once again awesome - based upon a true story - worth watching

Whilst there were one or two flaws, I must admin I really enjoyed this movie once it got going. Russel Crowe’s American accent was lousy and could only be topped by Nick Cage’s Italian accent in Captain Correll’s Mandolin. I was slightly confused at the beginning of the film at the development of the characters. It took me a while to figure out who everybody was, particularly in relation to Frank Lucas’s extended family but we got there in the end! Unlike some other reviewers, I did not think that this was a black Scarface, more like a black Godfather mixed with Serpico. Loved the way the climax of the movie came through whilst the whole family was in Church singing Amazing Grace. Very Godfatherish! One particular scene which really struck a chord was the all the Lucas family celebrating Thanksgiving in their opulent surroundings, all paid for from the profits of selling drugs, whilst on the flip side, we had scenes of addicts who had bought the drugs living in the most squalid conditions, injecting heroin and subsequently dying as a result. Was this supposed to strike a nerve and make a statement Mr Scott? Note: Brilliant support played by Josh Brolin as corrupt Detective Trupo.

An interesting epic, well acted by all parties. Not Russell Crowe's greatest hour but he did have to pitch himself next to one of our modern screen legends (Denzel). Denzel does a great job of creating a balanced character, one that we both admire for his convictions and loathe for his actions. A likeable but fearsome man. Russell Crowe's tenacious cop is not quite as convincing and at times his plight was a little cliched (whether it's based on a true story or not). He's too dedicated to the job, loses his family as a result and admits his faults and failings (blah blah blah blah). Overall though, well directed and a typically steadfast show of ability from Ridley Scott. Nice to see RZA in there giving a good performance as Moses Jones too! Enjoyed it.

quality film in every way

Very mediocre gangster movie with little credibility. Opening scenes of violence to shock but added nothing. DW too clean cut to be a gangster. Russell Crowe becoming chief prosecutor after just passing bar exams is comical. My wife went to bed after an hour and I nearly fell asleep. I wouldn't bother - usual rubbish.

Great film even if I did have to stop half way through, take a rest and catch the rest at a later date. I found the film very interesting from a historical point. It was well made, with strong performances. On a negative it had no real surprises - it was a very formulaic, by the numbers depiction of events and lives.

Started off a bit crap but once it got into it what a great film!

A slow building drama with excellent performances from both Washington and Crowe. It's very much a fim of 2 halves and is definately worth it. For those who think the 2.5 hours running time is long, then this has a extended version with 20 minutes more footage.

Denzil is very good in this and I really enjoyed the film. Although 2.30 hrs long the film just flowed and didn't notice the time had elapsed.

This is a great DVD, excellent cast and sets. One of the best movies i have watched this year. Cops V's Villains. Classic story line of a copper trying to bring down the drung empire of a Manhattan drug lord and gangster.

Good film you have to really watch it to follow the true story lines

Two Hollywood legends combine for a blockbuster of a movie - Crowe and Washington are worth the watch alone with the latter probably just shading it. It starts off slowly but stick with it as it gets much better and by the end of the film you'll respect both leads.

Nicely made, though too long. The immediate impact wasn't at all bad, but became predictable and downright cheese at the the end. Lines were drawn aritificially, presumably with an american audience in mind. It was about as subtle as a cannon ball, with inscrutable (wealthy) asian drug lords, untrustworthy relatives and an unlikely cop. Or was it all a cunning CIA plot?........ Nah !!!!!!!!

This was a disappointment sadly. Although both actors are highly praised in my book I didnt enjoy this a s much as I thought I would. The storyline was a bit thin throughout most of the film.

Washington plays an honourable family orientated gangster along the lines of The Godfather. Crowe is a down and out cop whose personal life is a mess but who is the only cop in New York not on the take. Great story, well acted and lots of action

I always love a good gangster film anyway, but this being based on a true story I found superb. In short an up and coming gang members Boss is killed. He then decides to take over and does a grand job of doing so. Eventually brought down by the police, he then ends up helping the guy that brought him down to take out the entire gang. Good adult watching.

Got a bit lost at first but soon got going. Denzel is fantastic even though I dont agree with anything he does you learn to love him and hate the good guys. A must see.

excellent film abit like micheal x

The film opens with a piece of violence that led me to believe that was all this would be - how wrong! It turns out to be about the drug business and how one man treats it as if his commodity was cars or coffee. By showing the drug business this way one sees the corruption that the vast sums of money the drug industry acquires and then spends to keep itself going. The drug barons indifference to the terrible impact of their product on the people who use it is tellingly shown. Basically this film struck me as a parable for all big businesses and the people who run them. A thought provoking film far beyond the usual drug film.

This has fast become one of my all time favourites, excellent charicters excellent story line, i will be buying this one to watch over and over!!!! Dont miss it its far to good to miss.

I heard alot about the film before actually getting to watch it, did it live up to my expectations??? Well yes and it exceeded my expectation. What a cracker of a movie, lets face it they are hard to come by now a days. Well worth five stars.

i thought american gangster was garbage, the opening scene was captivating but doesnt warrant been sat there for another hour and whatever waiting for more of the same, which doesnt happen, i noticed another person left a review of the same film saying how explosive the first 5 minutes were!! er so what!! they were, the rest was rubbish, a poor film considering the cast and director, it was described as a slow burner, which was an understatement! ha no spoiler cos there wasnt anything worth mentioning!!

I had heard good things about this film so I had high expectations and wasn't disappointed. The plot doesn't move along at great speed but it is most absorbing. I would recommend this film.

This film is so ridiculously over long. You can see that Ridley Scott is purposely trying to make this film as long as possible, likely so that it can be further compared to Gladiator further than the obvious director/star comparisons. The first hour of this film could easily be shortened to 5 minutes. So after sitting through this total waste of time, you have little patience left for when the film picks up towards the middle and later parts of the film (if you are still awake for this). I would suggest either watching the infinitely better gladiator again, or casino / goodfellas / Eastern Promises.

Well I thought this was very slow, dont get me wrong it is a good film yet not as much happening as i thought. I would still recommend a watch.

One of my favourite lines in the film is read out by the Vietnamese drug baron. Frank, the central character of the film, is in Vietnam to ensure further supplies of Heroin are secured as the Vietnam war comes to an end. The drugs baron suggests he close his operation but Frank 'is no quitter'. 'Quitting when your ahead isn't the same as quitting' replies the baron, wise words. Criminals never do know when to stop and all too often it is greed and the relentless pursuit of even more gain that eventually brings them down. The sheer amount of money amassed by his drugs operation is staggering. Over $250million Dollars were recovered when he was finally caught. The film is based on real life events though some changes have been made so it isn't a drama documentary. Nevertheless it is well put together with some superb acting from Denzel Washington.

A little longer than it needed to be but a good film, 1970's streets full of drug dealing gangsters and corrupt law enforcers ...not too dissimilar to today's streets!!

alot of reviews in the media slate this as glorifying the real life lucas, however, if u have it in your head that this is based on true life events, you won't be deceived and will be able to infer from the scenes how much more worse the real life character must've been. i just don't understand why hollywood decided to glamorise it - maybe they thought it a positive thing to show a black person being a 'kingpin' back in those days...

Good film, kept you thinking.

I found this to be an excellent film if maybe a little long. It encouraged me to research on the history of Nicky Barnes as I thought Cuba Gooding Jr's portrail of 'the original Nino Brown' came across as an ameteur hustler rather than a name to be reckoned with...which he was. All round excellent performances by all involved a slight continuity error with RZA sporting a very blatant Wu Tang Clan tattoo. That aside I really enjoyed this a will probably buy it to add to the classic film collection.

What can say about this movie that will do it the justice that it deserves!!!! My heading is apt. Judge it for yourself - you have to watch this to understand the different flavour of Gangsters this guy is! And to think most of us did not know much about it.

Dreadful film. Badly lit production, hard to see what was going on, jumble of a story and after 15 mins I stopped the viewing and returned it the next day. Unless you are keen on extreme violence, dont bother with this one.

Fantastic film considering based on a true story. Denzel Washington is yet again a good actor. Definitely worth renting.

American Gangster had probably the best open to a film I have ever seen. Gripped purely on the introduction I thought 'WOW this is going to be an awesome film'. Unfortunately this was not the case a hour and a half later due to shear boredom I turned the file off. Quick summary: A long unoriginal slow story line.

This is like two films in one. The first part disjointed, sporadic and badly edited, the second more consistent and building towards something, albeit a little rushed because of the time wasted in the first half, and made all the more effective by being based on true story. Its all well acted and definitely worth watching, its just a shame that it could have been much much better.

The fact that it was based on a true story made it more interesting, it had great depth. Denzel Washington plays a great bad guy, as good a bad guy as he was in Training Day

I thought this film was ok, it was rather slow and meandering, an ok film for a mid week watch but not spectacular.

Very violent, bad language but a seriously thought provoking film which is scary but true. Great cast helps and well worth a 2.5 hour night in with a good film

The casual violence in this film is depressing rather than exciting. I found it rather boring.

I came to this film with no expectations beyond having enjoyed several other films starring Russell Crowe and a mild interest in understanding the story of how New York has been 'cleaned up' over time since the seventies. I wasn't let down. This was a gripping tale. occasionally very violent, but with the emphasis on the personalities and motivation of the protagonists. A very satisfying film, exceedingly well acted and filmed. And all the more fulfilling for being based on real people and events.

This was a better film than I had hoped for. I did not realise it was based on fact. It was quite an eye opener to see how many of the US armed forces were taking class A drugs whilst on duty in Vietnam. The drugs afforded an opportunity to a little known gangster that changed lives and the streets in Harlem, Bronx and Brooklyn. I also liked the good cop proving that to persue the right path in a difficult and corrupt profession was achievable, and hats off to the man if he really did the right thing. Immensely enjoyable and excellent cast. The always watchable Denzel Washington and the feisty Russell Crowe. Superb stuff!!

Very thin film, an episode of Hill Street Blues had better content that the whole film. Mr Crowe was walking asleep during this. Do not waste your time with this sad film, even on a night flight to London.

The film was okay till the ending and I found it a real let down. It finished like a damp squid with no big face off.

I nearly switched the film off after the opening scene, I dont do gory. It is a long film but actually worth sticking with and if the cover slip hadnt said how the drugs got into the country I wouldnt have worked it out. I feel the end 40 minutes are the best part of the film.

After having read the blurb on the box about this film I wasn't at all sure it would be my cup of tea. However, the film had both me and hubby riveted from start to finish. It was a brilliant story and a bit different from normal, the fact that it was based on a true story made it even more fascinating.

Top notch ganster fick this, very well scripted and acted with both leads (Denzel Washigton & Russell Crowe) on top form with Denzel trumping Russell for best actor in my opinion. Very realistic, almost too realistic at times, remember the opening scene in Saving Private Ryan? Nothing too graphic, just very, very close to what probably really goes on in that world. Well worth watching.

we enjoyed this film. you have to concentrate at times, as the stroy unfolds. quite gruesome in places. language a bit coarse. but we knew this before we watched so it wasnt a problem. good film. children enjoyed it too.

this film is a mixture of thriller, suspense, music and family ties. the locations are varied and interesting. all in all it shows that crime does not always pay. why loose all of those things that you have worked hard for.

All in all just a long winded uneventful film, which i considered to have nothing at all to do with Gangsters , just one guy making lots of money and another trying to catch him.the most action is in the first scene and thats your lot. A really terribly dull film in my opinion.

This film is based on a true story of which we should all probably be aware, as a morality tale, and it is admirable in its authenticity. However, it is too long and too flat to be a memorable experience for the average movie-goer, and is really one for the connoisseur.
The first hour of the film is merely preparation for what follows, but it does let us know where the people involved came from - this is something which is often missed out in such films, or, as in 'The Godfather', is covered in the sequel. There's a good reason for this, and this film tries to overcome it, but with only limited success.
After then, it becomes more interesting, and after the second hour, more interesting still, but it doesn't really deliver in the end.
It is not a simple story of the good guys vs the bad guys; the lines are blurred on each side; most of the cops are corrupt or dysfunctional, and the villains are, at least, loyal and adhere to family values. There are no simple answers, and one should rather look at the big picture, at the whole thing, and consider what makes things like this possible.
In the history of motion pictures, it will probably be a footnote, already outdone by films like 'The Godfather' and 'Goodfellas'. Its only particular difference is that it is not the Italians or the Sicilians, but that it was from the black community itself that produced the ruin of the streets of Harlem.
It hardly needs to be said that Denzel Washington and Russel Crowe turn in good performances, and the film is efficiently directed by Ridley Scott, but one wonders whether their talents would have been better used on something other than this rather sombre tale of serious mischeif.

Loves this, Crowe and Washington, compliment eachother brilliantly. Gripping, twists, turns all round fantastic watch. Its a true story aswell which always appeals to me, it's the type of film i would watch a few times.

I am not normally disappointed when I watch a Denzel Washington film. Apart from the the very graphic violence I thought this film was very good. The fact that it was based on a true story, to me, always gives the film that little bit extra. I thought there was a very strong cast and Denzel and Russell Crowe were both excellent. Not for the faint hearted but definitely worth seeing.

I was looking forward to this film as I had heard it was very good, however I really did struggle and actually fell asleep half way through. I thought it was very slow moving and very dull.

New York in the 1970's is brilliantly recreated in this film and the cast give it a good go. But like Ridley Scots' Gladiator it's all surface and no substance. The director doesn't seam to be able to wrestle with the moral dilemas this sort of film always has. The ending is way too cosy. 'Based on a true story' is always a bit of a con and I have some seriouse questions about the ending which will be hard to discuss without giving the plot away. Also the film seamed about to end three or four times in the last half hour, if it had stopped the first time it might have left a better impression. I've given it three stars cos it looks great. You know what, as I write this it's now the morning after watching the film and the further away from it I get the less I liked it and the more holes I can see in the plot. In fact just like Gladiator. I'm taking it down to one star.

Absolutely brilliant! I was hooked from the start, and have since recommended it to friends, it was brilliant. Oddly, i started to feel sorry for the bloke..... Brilliant cast, briliant film. The film didn't go into the entire true story, but I don't think that it hurt the film. Really recommend this one!

This film was refreshingly good when you consider the mainstream cast - very well done. It's not Ramboesque in action proportions but you won't nod off on the sofa.

I know that reviews were high for this one but I found myself nodding away just 15 minutes after it starts...Too dark and 'draggy' for my like..But I can see that Denzel was in his usual very commendable acting self..

I was a little disappointed by this film, as I am a fan of both the lead actors and gansgter films in general, but I felt that something was lacking. It was a good film, but not a great one.

This was very slow. I am not good at sticking with slow films. So I did not see the end.

An interestingfilm, mainly because of Daniel Washington's intentse performance, but it lacks the drama, wit, subtle complexities (particularly in portrayal of its characters) that made the 'Godfather' trilogy so compelling.

I had read the reviews most of which were mixed. When i watched the film i opted for the uncensored and unedited full length version. To say this films rolls along at a steady pace is an understatement. It does eventually get to it and i was left satisfied with the plot and i would say if you like this sort of thing give it a watch.

A slick and glossy interpretation of the darkest days of New York's past. Washington is excellent as the lead. With a convincing performance as the calm, calclulated and equally ruthless head man. Both believable and very watchable for all of the family other than the very young. Recommended.

this i have to say with time will age just as the god father trilogy has..it truly is a must see. denzel shows his true quality in this film with the gritt and raw emotion. a timeless piece as time will show...

A good story with great acting, but the film could have been a lot shorter. It seemed 'padded out' , which resulted in me nodding off at one stage (I didn't miss any of the storyline though), which shows to me that there was 'extraneous scenes' in it that were unnecessary to the great storyline! Otherwise, a great film!

Far FAR too long! That sums this film up in a nutshell. I liked the cast, but there was no significant characterisation, the action scenes were too few and too short and the twist at the end was spoiled by the synopsis written on the LOVEFILM packaging which gives it away! Sort it out LOVEFILM!!! Had they cut this down by about an hour it would have been fantastic. As it was, I turned it off half way through and had to come back to it because I was bored. Really disappointing as I has heard good things. Worth a look if you have an afternoon to kill

i am normally a huge film fan of films from different genres, horror, thriller, action, comedy,, u name it! but this film really did not live up to my expectations. it didnt keep my attention (which is a highly unusual occurrance) so much so that i didnt even watch it to the end

This was a good movie - not an all time best - but good.

I thought I was going to hate this film - I had ordered it more to keep my boyfriend happy having ordered quite a few subtitled films that he turned his nose up at! However, it was not as violent as I imagined and I actually really liked it. The violence wasn't glamourised at all but you did feel some empathy towards the main character and how his life had evolved. Would thoroughly recommend and even watch again.

Ridley Scott, Denzil Washing and Russel Crowe. How could it miss? Some critics say that Scot could have done better with an amazing real life story.. Maybe. but I enjoyed it. He caught the period exactly and the music was exactly right. The two stars carried it off perfectly.

A good film for saturday night on the sofa, denzel washington can be relied upon for this as always.

I think I was let down by the hype surrounding American Gangster. It's a good film, but not the great film I expected. I was disappointed by the styling, I didn't think it looked as good as it could have, and the storyline was a little indulgent, but otherwise it was watchable. I think if you don't expect too much you will be pleasantly surprised.

why are't there more movies like these made, i dont mean your typical g, star flick, i mean fact based movies. denz and the russ at there best, and at the helm one of the business's biggest directors. 10/10

i would say this is a fair film, probably one to watch if you cannot find anything else to find on the list of flims to be sent to you. again a flim i tended to look out the window out, hence did not grab my attention for long periods and yet could still catch up on the story.

American Gangster was a powerful film.. It was such a captivating perfomance by Denzel Washington. Russell Crowe was impressive too.... The screenwriter kept close to the original storyline.. Very well handled

This is a grand Godfather kind of epic, a great piece of film-making, just about holds the attention, definitely worth watching, but too long and rather empty inside. Wants to be a Big Film but does not quite measure up to its own shoe size.

This film was not at all what we expected.

Cracking film. Was hooked all the way through. Good acting, good story, lovely cinamatography. Had to stop half way through, and watch the second half the next day. Found myself looking forward to watching it? Very rare for me. I'd highly recommend this film, but would be carefull about letting teenaged children watch it. It does glamorise the heroin trade a bit. A tocken effort is made to show the true nature of the narcotics business, but it was just a fleeting glimpse. If you like this film, you'd probably like Serpico, based in NYC and at around the same time, and also a true story. Summary - Loved it.

Based on a true story,great .powerful.gripping film.About a black American who seemingly becomes more powerful than the mafia,with a hot cop on his tail how long can he stay one step ahead......A must see film.

Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe as good as ever. Due to its being based on a true story, the ending was a bit anti-climatic.

One aspect of the film I found bizarre was all the naked ladies in the drugs apartment - but hey, maybe that's what it was like in real life!

Wasn't at all sure about watching such a long film but it flew by with constant action and constant twists to the tale.

This is a fantastic movie. As you would expect, it is brilliantly acted, but unlike many movies of this genre it is much more than directionless violence. The fact that it is based on a true story makes thev whole thing more intriguing. Was it just me, or are you supposed to be rooting for the bad guy?

Great film a little long

Life in Harlem in the 70's was hard. Black life was darker obviously! This is an interesting film about professional respect but it is a slow burn that won't suit thrill seekers and 'Die Hard' fans. Fine performances by Washington and Crowe keep the interest going for the persistent watcher who will be finally rewarded by a solid strong film. Shawshank Redemption it is not though and your unlikely to watch this a second time round. Not a film you'd want as a Christmas present.

Ok film but a little slow and predictable to some extent. DW is good as lead actor, but keeps saying 'my man' all the way through which become irritating after a while! P.S for the ladies, Russell Crowe isn't too hot in this one as he is a little on the tubby side.

I surprised myself by really enjoying this film though I did have to watch over two evenings as it was so long. A fantasic ending with excellent acting and storyline.

This kept me enthralled from the start, the opening sequence definately promised good things and I wasn`t disappointed. Denzel Washington played a superb role, I loved it. This is well worth watching.

This was very good, bit borig at times and my mind would wonder but enjoyed it and it was a true story which makes it even better.

Too be honest I as distracted through most of this film by phone calls and email sending, which I don't think its the type of film to do that! The acting was great in it, and the story of both men told well. However I read the life story of Frank on Wikipedia as I was a bit lost in the film due to not concentrating and there were a lot of bits they didn't make clear. Watch this film, but give it your all its worth it.

I found this disppointing as I had heard good reviews, the film was slow and I felt that the ending was predictable. It won't have you on the edge of your seat but it is OK to watch

its a strange one - i liked it but at the same time it was very slow and just got too violent to get the shock 'i like Guy Ritchie films' audience engaged. It just doesn't have the depth of the godfather and Denzil was strangly aloof in the whole film and not really engaging. It seemed simple at times and over complicated at other times, maybe the lead characters should have swapped parts!

Gripping, excellent well filmed Oscar bid by Ridley Scott. Not many laughs but a quality flick.

Although the film in general is really good...the plot is hard to follow...or at least for me it was...i thought things were happening too fast that i couldn't really tell what was happening most of the time...i like the films where you can just sit back and not really have to think really hard about whats actually going on....i would assume that if i watched it several times it would be easier to follow...definitely a 'must-see'...just so i dont feel so silly about finding it difficult to get into!!

I was shocked from the outset of the violence, think reseviour dogs 'kidnapped policeman' scenerio - however, I just could not believe the story-line, and I actually thought that the only thing that could possibly save this film is if it is a true story....and guess what, it is. I would only watch this once, but glad I did.

Not your average 'gansta film': thought provoking and, essentially, a very moral tale.

Another film that had a big hype of being really good. I would say it's okay,probably worth a watch. I found the beginning a bit hard to get through, but once in the main storyline it was pretty good - in a strange you find yourself almost routing for Denzil Washington even though he's the bad guy. What I did find odd was when Denzil finally gets caught, he seems to give the other bad guys up to readily. It was like a real long lead up of not getting caught to 'oh okay I'm caught I'll help you get some bad guys'. Although the film was long it ended too quickly.

Maybe its the fact that it is based on a true story. Maybe its the fact that it was Denzil Washington and Russell Crowe. It was definately one of the nice ones I've seen. It was moving, did not drag and certainly you talked about what happened in it once it was over. Too graphic scenes at times for sure, which to me made it even better. I would recommend it.

I found this film a bit disappointing. It was ok to watch on a saturday night when you have nothing else to watch. The film appeared to glorify Denzal Washington's character and almost pushed us towards sympathy for him. It was if the film makers had a great deal of respect for the gangster and everything he had achieved against all odds (it is based on a true story). My advice would be to rent something else.

Denzel Washington is the American Gangster, who starts his family drugs empire up and is being tracked down by Russell Crowe's cop character. There is an aimless side-plot with Carla Gugino as RC's estranged wife, regarding custody of their son, which appears entirely pointless to the overall plot other than demonstrating the impact the job has on his life. The acting is good, the story is good - but it isn't anything special and feels a little like it drags.

Slow burner, came good in the end. Not as good as reviews said it was going to be.

Don't bother if you have an IQ above 50 you won't like this film.

What can I say this was one of the best films I've seen in a long time.

fantastic story, acting and directing. almost all film lovers would love this film. the main charactors are hypnotic and however brutal you cant not like them especially d. washington's. not dissimilar to the godfather, but the story is faster!

A solid gansta movie but a bit long and Denzel doesn't set the world on fire ... frankly I much preferred New Jack City!

I quite enjoyed this film, and found the characters portrayed the gangster lifestyle quite realistically - it was very harsh in some places. My only moan was that it was a little too long in length, and was then wrapped up quite hastily in the last 20 minutes or so. All in all though it was still good

As a Denzil Washington fan I waited for this film with anticipation, but little did I know that I would have to wait an extra hour after starting the film to be engaged. In my personal opinion, the story could have been told in less time, with better screenplay and without DW. He was wooden, mumbled to the extent where I had to increase volume and rewind to hear parts of his monologues. The one plus was Russell Crowe's performance. This is the first time I have actually seen him act and not overact. Worth seeing if you are fan and its raining, otherwise I would leave it off the list.

In my opinion a very well acted and directed movie. Made all the more interesting as it is based on a true story. Watched the extended version, rather than the theatrical version on the disk.

I was originally looking forward to watching the film, but very quickly regreted choosing it. Found it totally boring and certainly not what I had hoped for. I can't believe some of the comments made by other reviewers of this film. It is long but I think that is a good thing as you get to see more depth to the charaters and more action. Denzil Washington is excellent as Frank Lucas and Russel Crowe equally as good in his part. This is an excellent film and well worth the two and a half hours spent watching it.

After watching some poor gangster films recently, it was nice to come across a decent film within this genre. A fascinating insight, not only into the life of Frank Lucas, but also the part Vietnam played in the importation of heroin in the nineteen sixties. It is also an excellent cat and mouse thriller, Crowes honest cop chasing the king of Harlem with ultimate dedication, yet the two not getting to share the screen till the latter stages. Preceding this, and to the sound of 'Amazing Grace', Lucas walking out of church with his mother only to be met by the man who will ultimately bring him down is simply outstanding. This, amongst other stand out visuals, like Frank enjoying a Thanksgiving dinner with family, while a young boy cries at the sight of his overdosed father should make this movie stick in the memory. Please, can we make it a rule, that all gangster flicks are tackled by writers and directors with intelligence!!!

Ok. Not one of Densils best

How can the same man that made Blade Runner have made this artless tripe? This film starts appallingly and then slowly warms up, without ever getting too exciting. Russell Crowe’s character is absolutely pointless and totally hackneyed, Denzel (easily the best thing on display here) is slumming it in his by-the-numbers portrayal of a drug-dealing entrepreneur and everyone else is just along for the ridiculous ride. Like in Black Hawk Down the politics vary between scant and risible and the whole thing smacks of cliché. Based on a true story apparently, this seems based on a large number of better films. Saying this, there are some interesting scenes, mostly set in The Projects, but the whole thing aims at a slickness that it skirts over and an authenticity that renders it ridiculous (by which I mean, and this was the films biggest surprise, the lighting is clearly intended to convey the murk of the world in which the characters move – it doesn’t! It conveys bad lighting and obscured faces, like having cataracts I imagine). For fun I might give this three stars, but for sheer elements of dreadfulness I am deducting one.

This movie is a must, it is well written and well played, Denzil Washington and Russell Crowe make a formidable duo. Well worth a night in.

Not expecting to enjoy this one, but definately got into it. It's not up there with Godfather but a definate brain teaser for a night in instead of mind-numbing drivle.

My review of American Gangster by Tim Yes! An exxcellent film - once I had adjusted to the fact that Washington's character was a complete mixture of values. However, that said, he remained likeable and convinving all through the film. I would recommend this film to anyone who does not accept that gangsters did not depart with the 1920's!

As a big Denzel fan I was looking forward to this one but felt slightly let down. Still a good film but not nearly one of his best. Russel Crowe was good but felt his character was boring. Worth watching but don't expect an epic.

I didn't quite know what to expect from this film, I had heard it was based on a true story and as I'd seen films in the same genre billed as such, I was most probably expecting pretty much the same type of thing - that being fast paced, quite violent etc etc...however, I was quite surprised! The actors are excellent (of course) and give such a depth to the characters, it is quite a slow burner BUT it gives insight into an unseen world of drugs and politics and is totally indicative of race relations within that period of time (which is an aspect not so obvious at the beginning). I loved this film, it had me contemplating the rights and wrongs of the people that it portrayed and the world in which they lived in at that time. Totally thought provoking and insightful.

I had this film for absolutely aaaages before I sat down to watch it. For some reason I could never find the right moment and I think I was put off by friends' reviews. I was basically waiting to be disappointed. I'm still undecided. From the moment I started watching this beautifully directed film I was gripped. A strong plot and brilliantly acted characters provided a visual delight that intrigued me. However, as the story draws to a close it suddenly felt too rushed, as though everyone involved couldn't wait to finish while I felt a lttle deflated and could easily have sat through some more action without fidgeting. On the whole, a well acted, well scripted and well crafted film.

Overrated, seen it all before, confusing and russel crowe and Denzel are both wooden actors in my opinion. Mindless violence, as usual in these types of films but seemed even more pointless in this one, no style at all compared with Goodfellas. Turned it off after about half and hour as life is too short!!!

Gangster films are often a mixed bag - they are either very poorly done and easily forgotten or they become instant classics. American Gangster is destined to be a Gangster Classic. The best part of this film for me is the performances of the two leading men. Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe produce two stunning performances and form an amazing screen partnership - any scene with them both together has you completly captivated. Denzel gives us a performance we have never seen or expected from him before and Crowe's performance is well thought through and executed. They are supported by a great supporting cast and aided by the intelligence and vision of a great director. Ridley Scott's portrayal of the life of Frank Lucas and the drug ridden streets of Harlem is top class. He captures the glitz and glamour of the gangster drug scene whilst also been able to integrate its dark underbelly. He also has to be credited for creating one of the finest screen partnerships in a long time in Washington and Crowe. Do not be put off by the length of the film, I promise you it will be worth every last minute. Fingers crossed there is a Crowe, Washington, Scott collaboration soon!!

This film ticked all the boxes, it is a great watch - can not think of anything more to say.

Initially a dark slow film that I nearly abandoned having better things to do. However I stayed and the film came good in the end. The portrayal of 70's Harlem was very atmospheric with what appears great attention to detail, period cars, etc. 3 stars is the average - 2 stars for the 1st half and 4 stars for the 2nd half. I'm undecided whether I would want to see it again.

Definatly not one for the girls as i got bored within the first 5 mins but my husband loved it.Plot jumps from past to present through the film which makes you watch it more carefully. lads will love it.

A compelling and unusual story of the rise of a black drug cartel. Race is inevitably an underling theme but the mix of manners and ethics in this believable story takes a fresh look at the nastiness of the trade, very different from the bravura and violence of the usual movies about Italian or South American family controlled crime. Nonetheless the cleverness and ambition of the protoangist, against a back drop of the rise of black confidence results in a thought provoking & uncomfortable story. Denzel is fabulous and credible but all performances are strong and knocked back

this film is based on a true story, the film is a bit on the long side with not much action, so if your looking for a good shoot em up this is not the film for you, having said that the film is still very enjoyable.

Incredibly this film is based on fact. It is an exciting and almost unbelievable plot about a drug baron who bought heroin direct from Laos and shipped it home thanks to a bent cousin in the USAAF during the Vietnam war. Tracked down by an agent in the newly formed DEA, this fast moving and exciting Ridley Scott movie really moves at a pace. Denzel Washington is superb as drug boss Frank Lucas and a restrained Russell Crowe plays the detective on his trail. Well worth a watch!

To be honest it was ok a bit slow and took a while to get in to. I actually fell asleep within 20 minutes of the film starting.

This went straight on my rental list when I read the synopsis as the film was released (I'm yet to find a cinema that beats my own home cinema and therefore wait for the dvd release!). A big fan of Ridley Scott I was keen to draw comparisons between this and his preious classics in the same way as you can with Gladiator and Blade Runner, but in this case Ridley has done something new and different. Although the lack of his obvious inimitble style is initially disappointing the movie exudes quality film making in droves, with faultless casting, scripting, lighting, and scoring. Denzel plays a good part, and although not naturally suited to this type of role portrays great depth of character as the godfather of the gang. Russell Crowe puts in another cracking performance, again in an unusual character, but carries it off well despite the occasional Australian lilt. His 70's throwback hairstyles make up for any inadequacy in his tone. The fact that American Gnagster is based on a true story makes it all the more amazing, but it's the well rounded nature of the construction of the story line and the film making itself that makes it definitely one to watch again.

it is like seeing one cathedral or fjord or ruin you see them all. At this is based on a true story so keeps ones attention once in a while. But same ol theme, as expected. Good performances from the stars.

Did I miss something? I'm not sure if I actually watched this film or fell asleep. I think I watched it, but for some reason am unable to recall a single thing about it. I can't even remember the character's names. The problem with stories based on 'real events' are that real events are generally dull. Real drugs busts are about sitting around in cars drinking coffee. Real bent cops keep their heads down and don't do anything to draw attention to themselves. This film has all of those thrills and more. Stop for a fag! Go for a takeaway! Visit your mum! Go to church! Make a phone call! Having said that, the performance of the main cast is excellent. Some really powerful performances from Washington, and the bloke that I found out afterwards was Crowe. Rent this film if you have visitors staying that you don't like, and want to avoid conversation for the evening.

Big expectationsfor this film. Unfortunately not as good as I had hoped. The story was fine and I appreciate based on reality, but similarities with Godfather throughout. Unlike the Godfather the menace did not come through and there was an emphasis on the style of the era rather than the subject matter.

A film well worth watching, shows Denzil Washington in a completely different role to what I am use to seeing him in. This film is based on a true story, it can be violent at times and may seem a little slow but it will also keep you on the edge of your seats.

A great gangster film with lots of action.

Jersey-based cop Richie Roberts (Crowe) sets out to uncover a mysterious drug lord in 1970s Harlem after a crooked colleague succumbs to heroin addiction. Frank Lucas, the drug lord in question, is played by a steely and murderously still Denzel Washington, and it's fair to say this movie is entirely his. He holds you in the palm of his hand from the word go. Frank's success owes much to lying low and under the radar, but when he makes a fundamental mistake at a well publicised Ali fight, he draws attention to himself in outrageous clothing bought for him by his beauty queen wife. It is here he first comes to Richie's attention and the stage is set for a movie which is compelling to the end. It's made even more gripping by the fact the film is based on a true story and by the clever ways in which Ridley Scott compares his two protagonists. Washington is superb in a performance which simmers and simmers, occasionally breaking out into horrific acts of aggression which remind you that behind his beautiful charming smile, there lurks a man of much violence. His obsession with success at all costs echoes Pacino's Michael Corleone, as does a scene centred around a church service which cleverly subverts the finale to the first Godfather. There are umpteen allusions to crime and gangster movies from the 70s, a period in which the events took place: Crowe's Richie recalls Serpico; Frank's obsession with reaching the top in America and escalating isolation and violence is a neat spin on Tony Montana. But what is most interesting about this movie is that it adds a new take to the gangster movie tradition - that of the black gangster. As a black man taking control of Harlem, Frank upsets the status quo established by the Italian families and gives audiences a fresh look at a time period and film genre. The whole movie is intelligent and immaculately shot - the horrors of Vietnam are beamed in from black and white TVs in both Richie and Frank's houses; the corruption of Nixon's administration paralleling the corruption of Richie's cop peers, led by a slimy Josh Brolin who blackmails Frank as a rival drug peddler. Parallels are also made between Richie and Frank, to be neatly subverted: whilst Frank's crimes are horrific and destroy hundreds of lives, he adores his family and lavishes them with gifts to show them he cares - he seems to want to look after them, whilst Richie is an inattentive father and unreliable player when it comes to women. His morality only seems to kick in during his work and it's this which redeems him. When the pair come together to bring charges against THREE QUARTERS(!!) of the Crime Squad Richie works with, the similarities between the men are clear and Washington and Crowe sizzle as they spar. I'm not sure how convincing Crowe was as a cop, but he puts in a solid performance as a foil to Washington, who manages to chew up all the scenery without resorting to histrionics or bombast. His a quiet performance which is all the more sinister because of it. This is a long film but one which is definitely worth seeing - I get the feeling it will reward repeat viewings if only for the magnificent performance from Denzel Washington.

I consider there was too much violance and swearing. Very unnecessary to the story line. In fact it detracted from it.

This film was solid, quite entertaining, and featured some strong performances. But I think that without the star power of Washington and Crowe (let's face it they are both very very good actors) this would have been another very average gangster film (well actually a poor one as it is average even wth them). I think in the end it was just a case of 'OK, so what?' I don't know it just didn't quite hit the spot for me.

Simply one of the best films I have seen. Denzel Washington is captivating, Russell Crowe perfect as a muscular but uncertain hero. Beautifully shot, tremendous plot, and one of my new favourite films. And by the way, it's worth the investment of time!

Gripping and enthralling but you need to keep your wits about you, mainly because you'd expect Washington to be the good guy and Crowe the baddie. Well, those are the roles they are given. How it works out is interesting. Two good performances from the headliners.

washington is cool as you like in this. good new fashion gansta' stuff, wrapped up as ol' school. if you like this genre, you'll love this.

Extremely long and tedious. I was very much looking forward to this film and so was very disappointed with the end result. Very overlong, poor screenplay and just plain boring. Don't waste 2 and a half hours of your life...

Saw this at the cimena and thought it too long for the material but on seeing a second time got more out of it. You have to allow the film to develop at its relatively slow pace but there is some excellent acting in it. Understood at little better what the term 'American' means in the title - themes of family, supporting the community and enterprise through business run through it. Even if the activity is a criminal one, the 'American Way' seems to prevail until or unless someone is prepared to to make a personal sacrifice (in this case Det. Roberts) to establish a moral boundary. At a time when CGI infused films appear to dominate, this is a welcome reminder that it is possible to make good films without special effects.

Good movie and based on true events. I must admit I had not heard of this person although I really enjoyed the film and even then read up about the people involved afterwards on the internet, so it obviously hooked me. Very entertaining with good characters, great story and was nice they followed it up at the end with what happened to the people within it. I wont say too much as do not wish to spoil it for you.

Wasn't expecting to like the film as I don't like gangster films but to my surprise I was glued to my seat. The actors were superb and the storyline was great. Not what I was expecting but I would recommend it to anyone. Based on fact and quite strong meat I would watch it again. Very entertaining

I found the opening half hour a bit fast n confusing, but well worth the wait, didnt notice the time passing much - which is always a good sign. I wouldn't say it was the best of films, but compared with some of the poorly thought out, lacking in intelligence films being churned out, twas worth the time taken to watch.

Ok - Denzel Washington is the central character. However, I found the dialog incomprehensible and nothing in the first 30 minutes worth writing a review about - so I havent. Dont bother unless you are a serious mob flick film watcher as this will likely only appeal to those sort of people. You have been warned....!

great flick, great acting, great story, you want Denzil W.'s character to succeed because he's so likable but are poinantly and subtly reminded of 'the evil of drugs' and the real victims of global drug running ie: the users and their families, without it being on a moral high ground.

Gangsters, police, violence and brilliant script together with a great cast make a fantastically entertaining movie.

i see one reviewer managed to struggle through it and found the last 30 minutes vaguely entertaining. How he or she made it that far is beyond me. I think someone might have got shot at some stage, and if i'd only had a revolver with me in my living room, i'd have matched it with a single bullet to my brain.

At the outset I wasn't too sure about this film, but as the movie played on- it became entertaining and quite gripping! The same applies to Denzel's role as the American Gangster at first - I felt he was too nice a character to be as ruthless as he was! but agian as the film went on - you got used to his character! The ending didn'thave as gripping a climax as say Goodfellas but what was surprising to me was that this was based on a true story. All in all i did enjoy this film and would reccommend it!

This movie touches upon so many elements surrounding the lives of everyone caught up in the world of drugs. I cannot begin to explain how this film challenges ones own perceptions; in the end everyman is responsible for one thing only, getting what you want. What you get in return is then always justified. Good or Bad. A brilliant story and a quite brilliant film.

Russell Crowe and Denzyl Washington both excell in this long story of gangland control of drugs with a significant level of police corruption. It does not reflect well on U.S. law and order at that period. ( During the Vietnam War ) Who will win the strategic battle - Crowe or Washington?

pleasantly surprised by this different take on the ganster genre - not your usual italian/sicilian families. I found the plot somewhat confusing to follow in places and thought that it went on perhaps 30 minutes too long but otherwise an interesting account of what was based on a true story.

A great film. The cast, the direction, the plot, just about everything relating to this film is excellent. The film sets are amazing, just how they managed to change downtown New York/New Jersey back to the 1970's was amazing. The whole film is set with the Vietnam war as a backdrop just further adds to the attention to detail that this film went out of its way to produce. A rather vague review, I know, but this film has to be seen. Mentioning anything about the plot with just give the game away. Enjoy!

Excellent movie full of action and a great story line

An excellent and gripping film, which keeps the interest going throughout. Has elements of French Connection, Godfather, Capone, rolled into one, and based on a true story. An excellent period piece with scenes of the late 60s Harlem, Vietnam War etc.

This is a modern take on the Godfather theme, except this time it's the black community that runs the crime rather than the Italians. This is referred to by a detective somewhat ludicrously at one point in the film as 'progress'. Progress is when Blacks get elected President, not when they get to run crime empires. Doesn't have any of the pizazz that the Godfather trilogy had and drags a bit from time to time. But the biggest problem is that in many scenes it is just impossible to tell what is going on because the dialogue is either impossible to hear because of the intrusive background noise, or else the accents are just too difficult for us Brits. (In the US they put subtitles on Glaswegian accents!)

This is a thought provoking, interesting movie, based on fact. It demonstrates that no-one is above the law and in this case justice did prevail. This is an unmissable film for anyone who is interested in current world affairs.

A gritty film about drug lords in the US. Fabulous film which needs concentration which we throughly enjoyed and would watch again like a shot. Def good veiwing and interesting especially as it is true.

Unfortunately Denzil Washington is just too nice to be a bad guy which makes this film unbelievable. Still not a bad film to watch made better by the fact it was based on a true story.

THe drug dealing was an interesting slant on the gangster story but I found Denzel miscast.

Denzel Washington is such a good actor - fantastic movie

I don't normally like gangster films but I thought this was good. You might want to spread the film out over 2 nights as it's 2 and a half hours long! My enjoyment of the film was slightly marred by the poor sound quality.

As a big Denzel fan I was a little let down by this film and felt it went on too long. It was a good insight into the drug industry of the 50's but overall the film was not as strong as I had hoped. It is an enjoyable film and worth a watch with a superb performance from Denzel.

Heavyweight performances from a heavyweight cast, great cinemaphotography

This film should be called American Gangsters there are that many different characters in it. I didn't like it at all. Too much violence and too much going on.

OK, I am biased as I have always had a love affair with the gangster film genre from those early classics with Cagney, Bogart and Robinson to the Godfather films and modern classics like Goodfellas and The Untouchables, as well as television's 'Sopranos'. Ridley Scott brings a new twist to the Gangster epic by focusing on Black New York as opposed to Italian New York. Ridley Scott proves himself, yet again, to be a master director and story teller and successfully brings the seperate stories of Denzel Washington's Gangster and Russel Crowes cop together to make a brilliantly engaging film. The characters are well realised and brilliantly portrayed by Messrs Washington and Crowe, both of whom give examples of how versatile they are as actors. For example Denzel Washington is truly chilling at times in this film in a way that I would have put money on him not being able to do. The film moves at a great pace and is very engaging and convincing from the start. There is nothing else I can say without giving away the plot, but if you've ever enjoyed a gangster movie - then this one is a must.

Dissapointing - really looking forward to this movie but it was way overlong and slow in places

Remember this is an 18 rating, so expect gangster language and gangster violence, although the violence is sharp and swift with no heart stopping torture. The story is based on a true tale, which gives it valuable credibility. For my money the story-line is a facinating but brief insight into the life of crime, drugs and police malpractice. A good balace between leading men, Crow and Washington. If the film does not amuse the ladies, perhaps the macho acting may carry them throgh to the end.

I did enjoy it but I think they took too long over introducing the characters. Having said that, Denzel and Russell are both absolutely fabulous (no surprise there).

Good through out with storyline

Although slightly long this film was gripping from beginnng to end! Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington both put in fantastic performances. I would highly recommend this film although a bit violent at times so not for the faint hearted!

Good film had to keep allert to follow film plot.

Great movie. Based on a real story, this film is quite shocking in revealing the armed forces and police corruption taking place in Vietnam and back at home during the 70's. Denzel Washington, as ever gives a chilling performance. Highly recommended.

After a bit of a slow start where I was worried I wasn't going to be able to get into it, after about half an hour was completely hooked. A great film with a superb cast including Denzel. Would definately recommend - be warned though it is a long film so plenty of popcorn needed.

Where do you start? When you see that the two leading cast members are Russel Crowe and Denzel Washington, you press 'play' and hope that its gonna match the expectation. American Gangster doesn't disappoint - in fact it's hard to see how Crowe and Washington could ever make anything better in the rest of their careers. The opening scene is brutal - there's no gentle approach which gradually builds the tension: this grabs you and shakes you around from the first scene. Washington plays Frank Lucas, a heroin dealer in 1970s Harlem who employs his entire family to help him build a drugs empire outsizing those of even the Italian Mafia. Using the US Vietnam effort as a supply line, Lucas ships herion to the US straight from the poppy fields of Nam into NY's streets, and he ruthlessly deals with any of his 'competitors' in that market. Crowe is one of the few cops in New York who is neither corrupt nor a junkee and as a result is given the task of putting together a crew with the aim of breaking the drugs gangs in New York. Ironically, in his quest to expand his empire, Washington's character helps Crowe to the extent that he becomes Crowe's main target. There is violence, tension and even a generous sprinking of 1970s disco music to keep the viewer's attention fixed to the screen. Yet, as with all good gangster movies, you can't help but somehow admire Washington's character - he is ruthless with his enemies yet shows his love and loyalty to his family throughout the film. Similarly, you get to 'know' Crowe's character really well as you take in his own personal problems, mostly self-caused, and then see his dogged professionalism as he tracks down Lucas. All in all, this is one of those which every film lover must have. Its right up there with all the great gangster movies and I'd recommend it to anyone.

really enjoyed this film, best i've seen for a long time. The story keeps you gripped throughout, if you like ganster movies it's a must see.
