Garden State  (2004)

It is the start of the new year and inevitably the thoughts go to the 'best of's' of 2004. Why would I mention that? Because unless you have seen this film you haven't completed the list, because this film will be on it. Depending on taste of course (unfortunately). If you like smart, funny, quotable, sad, heartbreaking, awe inspiring, beautiful, memorable and just plain amazing then you will like this film.

Think I am over exaggerating? Think of a film where you can take any frame and stick it on a wall as a poster because it is that beautiful. Think 'Goodfellas', 'Fargo', 'Shawshank Redemption', 'City of God', 'Magnolia'... now add Garden State. The acting is phenomenal and proves that 'Leon' was not a flash in the pan for Portman and Braff should be nominated for a screenplay oscar.

Someone else mentioned 'Lost in Translation' as a comparison and that cannot be argued with. You like Lost in Translation then you will like this. You don't like Lost in Translation then this is sufficiently different to warrant spending a couple of hours of your life watching. It won't change your life, but it won't make you regret taking the time out of your life either.

I am begging you people! Take a chance!

'Garden State' revolves around the Prozac injected world of, Andrew 'Large' Largeman, who is forced to return to his hometown, the 'Garden State' of New Jersey. Both refreshing and depressing in equal measures - more cold turkey and pedestrian than Donnie Darko but with the same sense of unidirectional angst against all things. The story feels real; mainly because of the way it hangs open at the ends. There are some memorable scenes, and the acting is superb. Andrew faces a decision whether to face the world or to numb the world; to limit himself to the expectations of his father (who administers the Prozac) or to set himself free. It's not a children's story. It is the typical story about coming home to see things in a new light - a mature take that older audiences would appreciate - small personal battles - and at a 'take it slow and steady' pace.

I loved this film and went to see it twice in the cinema. If you know Zach Braff from Scrubs prepare for a marked change of pace. It is slow and still and sexy and sweet by turns - with much to smile at and a few satisfying belly-laughs.

A great soundtrack and some nice visual one-liners. I would say one of the top five of 2004.

This is the first time in a very long time that I've been completely taken into a film for it's truth and honesty. There are so many aspects of this film that I could relate to on a actual basis rather than fantastical. Well done to Zach Braff on his first written/directed/starring role film...hopefully there will be many more to come

It's far from boring, as one reviewer has said, but come on everyone else, this film is hardly going to change your life. Anyone who's ever returned to the town they grew up in only to find that things haven't exactly moved forwards but more just taken steps sideways, (or even backwards,) will find themselves on familiar ground. Almost all the gags are well delivered and hit the mark, and the characters are likeable if a little two-dimensional. However it doesn't seem to know if it wants to be an off-the-wall Napoleon Dynamite-a-like, or schmaltzy Hollywood mush. Trying hard not to give anything away, it was the ending that ruined it for me: A more realistic, slightly down ending would have suited the feel of the film much more. I mean, guys, can you imagine the implications of leaving a flight immediately after boarding? Extract your luggage from the hold, delay the flight and probably get landed with a huge fine from the CAA? Nah - You'd just call her when you got to LA, promise to visit each other as often as often as possible, fail to do so at all, have that old 'It's Just Not Working Out' conversation and, six to eight weeks later, forget about the whole thing. Well, that's the way things went for me anyway.

This film is just one for everybody, I kept catching myself with a big grin on my face throughout. No matter what your tastes there is nothing not to like here. It's hilarious with the most fantastically crafted ensemble of odd bods but at the same time it manages to really tug at the emotions. It just feels completely accessible. Watch it and enjoy!

Another one of those films that all the critics raved over but I felt was seriously overrated a la 'Lost in Translation' and 'Sideways'. The story is drivel and the way it unfolds is uninteresting and unbelievable. Even Natalie Portman is terrible. Count Daddy's final thought - worth watching just so you can see for yourself how off the mark the critics were with this one.

really boring rubbish film if you want to go to sleep watch this rubbish

I rented the film after seeing reviews, but I have to say this was as dull as watching my washing machine.

I gave up after 30 minutes and watched another film. I then restarted this film.

Nothing happens of note.

Perhaps if you liked dull slow poorly lit films this may be your thing, but not mine. As for best film of last year, dream on.

This film is visual vicodin. Leaves you as mellow as a good sleep.

A brilliant script delivered with superb performances. Funny, moving and offbeat - I had a stupid grin on my face for most of its duration. Highly recommended.

The plot of a twenty something man, heavily sedated for psychiatric problems, returning home after nine years for his mothers funeral, then taking a detached look at the lives of his former friends could be the basis for a very successful film.

Instead of which Zach Braff (writer, director, lead male star) has written every quirky and odd thing he can personally remember from his past into the script (confirmed in his commentary shared with Natalie Portman) without any attempt to mould and fashion the material into a plot.

The sets seem a forlorn attempt to give some kind of structure to the film.

Desperately trying to find some rationale I discovered the film is supposed to be about the “directionless void of the twenty something generation”. Really, how patronising, I don’t recognise this behaviour in the “twenty something’s” I know, mainly they are intelligent focused people with university degrees.

So, a film for people in a directionless void.

The worse film I have ever seen, must not cost more than a tenner to make, do not rent this film or you will be wasting your money.

Given the hype that surrounded ths film, I was bitterly dissapointed. Far to sentimental and mulchy. It was promoted as a different, querky, interesting indie film, but was so safe and 'nice' it was like watching a two hour version of Dawsons Creek. If you want something genuinely interesting and different, don't bother. Donnie Darko is far better!

This is utter rubbish. NOTHING happens. Dont waste your life by watching it, it isnt worth the effort.

I gave up on this fim about half-way through. It was a boy on drugs meets kookie girl story, with echoes of The Graduate, but nowhere near as good. Natalie Portman was really annoying, and so was the man character, who I have never seen before and hope never to see again. This might work for someone (a) very young (e.g 14 to 20), (b) on depressants, and (c) who has never watched this sort of thing before.

In the same mood as "Donnie Darko" and "Ghost World", this coming-of-age or rites of passage story is simply beautiful. With Zach Braff directing, writing and starring, this is clearly a deeply personal film, and highly accomplished it is too.
Superb ensemble acting, particularly from Natalie Portman and Peter Sarsgaard, and a wonderful sense of design and locale - plus a brilliant soundtrack.
The film seems to explore the issues of broken homes, tough upbringings, and one man's search for the ability to discover and express his emotions. The ending rather disappointingly - and completely out of kilter with the movie - opts for sentimentality, instead of leaving the viewer with the mood music, so well built up throughout.
Lots of humour, and some real emotional impact, make this a minor masterpiece.

If 'Garden State' was an alcoholic beverage, it would be a tall iced glass of Pimms.

Zach Braf is the foggy brained prodigal son returning to his home town for a family funeral in this refreshing black comedy.

The reunion with friends and family shape 'Large's' views on life and it is great fun to watch him awaken as this film progresses.

Natalie Portman is a joy to watch and has finally reascertained her acting prowess for the first time fully since Leon (in my humble opinion).

Braf's writing, directing and acting skills are stupendous and the supporting characters are fantastic. I did have that guilty feeling when I was guffawing huge belly laughs at jokes that really REALLY shouldn't have been funny..

I watched this one night and watched it again the next and enjoyed it even more!

Garden State? Garden shed is more like it. Imagine a beatnik movie made by the Groundforce team with the existential pathos of Alan Titchmarsh? It doesn't even come close.

Garden state is a sodden dribble of diluted existentialism. Natalie Portman flops around the screen babbling various different ways of saying ' hey don't worry about me i'm a bit crazy i am' by opening her eyes wide and talking a bit fast and being mostly wet. The guy from scrubs is the guy from scrubs but a bit sadder. Sellotaped around these weak characters is some plot about someones mum dying and some learnin' love story. Ho hum zzz

At the start of the film we see the character played by writer, director and star Zach Braff in a jet plane, plummeting earthwards. The film doesn’t crash but it’s a close-run thing. It misses being sentimental mush by a hair’s breadth; it narrowly avoids becoming overly pretentious psycho-babble and manages to dodge its acting and directing style turning into parody. I suppose Garden State could be described as “a gently humourous look at the human condition”, as Braff returns home to meet his old high-school pals, encounter his own psychoses and fears, and find true love. I enjoyed this sweet film because I like the actors; I was on their side, smiling wide like a loving parent to will the whole thing on, though at the end of the film my face ached a tad.

Having seen this in the cinema once, I immediately decided to buy it on import from America. It's an interesting and insightful look at life and love from the perspective of a man whose youth was spent taking prozac. His return home brings back his old friends and forces him to confront his relationship with his father. The story is convincing, the emotions are real. A brilliant feel-good movie. Check out the deleted scenes on the DVD extras too!

I've never watched such a detached film as this. You don't care for any of the characters. They do talk but I can honestly say that after 30 minutes the words just go straight through you. They mean nothing, they have no substance. Give it a miss on all accounts.

This was very disappointing - after being led to belive this was something special, all I found was a cliched, 20-somethings in crisis movie - bloke is depressed, troubled but brilliant girl lets him see where he's going wrong blah blah blah... Even the much vaunted soundtrack is ordinary. Not good.

A somewhat reflective piece of work Directed, Written by and starring Zach Braff who plays the part of a struggling actor living on the West Coast who receives a telephone call from his father (Ian Holm) advising him that his mother has died. This initiates a rites of passage piece which is nicely acted but somewhat self indulgent on Mr Braff's behalf. His journey back to the old town, several thousand miles to the East, has some highlights and a couple of memorable scenes and quotes. This a seriously messed up young man whose Father is also his Psychiatrist and has kept him doped since puberty. Andrew Largeman's (Braff) redemption arrives in the body of Sam (Natalie Portman) who shows him how to live and also how to act. I am afraid that I could not get excited over this film, although it had some good moments, especially when Miss Portman was on the screen. A good example of why you should hire DVDs rather than buying them.

Garden State has so many beautiful moments, whether it be a scene, some dialogue, a specific shot or just Natalie Portman - you won't want to blink just in case you miss something.

You'll find yourself watching other people find themselves. And when its all over you'll find that the world isn't such a monstrous place after all.

The best feel-good movie of last year, and many before that. Watch it or miss out.

I gave it 45 minutes but had to give up - utter drivel.

Just couldn't get into it - no story, silly characters.

I'd rather watch paint dry.

Quite simply, one of the worst films I have ever seen. The acting is terrible, the characters 2 dimensional and unbelievable, and the plot is rambling and dull. Full of pointless scenes and faux-deep dialogue. 2 hours of my life I will never get back.

Promising debut from writor/actor/director Zach Braff about an actor who returns home for the funeral of his mother. A bit too ambitious in what it's trying to say and that detracts from a well rendered relationship between the main character and Nathalie Portman's character. The latter has had good reviews for her role in this film and it's easy to see why. After being restricted by wood in the Padme role she takes central stage in this film with a good performance. If you enjoy Hal Ashby films you'll enjoy this and although it's merely a good, rather than great film, I think it marks out Braff as a director to watch.

This film sort of reminds me of Catcher in the Rye. There are awesome performances by Natalie Portman and Zach Braff, and it's like the most incredible feel good film ever. I highly recommend it anyway, for what that's worth.

Just like the main character in the movie, he and the movie slowly wake up, starts slowly leaving you to assume a totally different movie that finally appears, which is good! So if you're bored with movies by numbers then check this out.

Though some quirky moments in this film but no real laughing out loud moments. The music was all too short. Some touching moments but the film was struggling to hold my attention, my mind was drifting off to even more mundane things like everyday shopping! Couldn't wait to post this one back to the sender. Certainly not one for me.

The characters are so well drawn that they seem very real. Portman and Braff have great chemistry.

Some reviewers seem to totally miss the point with this movie as it is of a style that will not appeal to everyone. The slow pace, similar to that of other movies mentioned such as Lost in Translation or Sideways, means that you have time to savour and think about what you're watching, rather than being bombarded with special effects or big fight scenes. True drama on a micro-scale, with subtle humour - not laugh out loud, just enough for a wry smile. So, know what to expect, if you like your movies full of action and big budget productions, forget it, otherwise you'll just be another poor reviewer who missed the point and would be better of watching Rambo. However, if you have a brain and some patience and depth, you will enjoy this movie.

There are only two films that have changed my outlook on life. This is one of them. Life with all its challenges and depressing details are portrayed well here and yet there is love and hope shining through. It just goes to show that despite all your problems there is always someone out there that will love you, if only you open your heart and mind. A fantastic uplifting yet reflective film with some excellent humourous touches.

Movies like this are rare - both a great coming home story and superb quality of acting made this film a real treat. I didn't realise until after seeing the film that Zach Braff directed and wrote it, I also didn't realise that he is such a talented guy. Natalie Portman shone, playing the cute, goofy hometown girl. There is lots here to keep you interested through to the end, soundtrack is superb aswell. A real pleasant suprise from a film I didn't have any expectations for. I hope Zach has some more ideas up his sleeve for the future.

Even with the most fertile imagination possible, this was absolute drivel and balderdash. The one star I have awarded is, to say the least, a generous assessment

for making Natalie Portman annoying. Boring, boring, boring!!! Boyfriend didn't even bother to stay awake.

I loved this film. I came to it with a slight bias as I am completely in love with Zach Braff from the Scrubs series which is just brilliant. However my film buff flatmate had said that this was rubbish. Undeterred I sat down to watch it anyway and was hugely impressed. Braff wrote, directs and stars in this film about growing up and moving on. It has humour, sadness and a few surprises and Natalie Portmans quirky, troubled girlfriend is a great piece of acting. It really touched a nerve with me as it said a lot about being true to yourself and living life to the full. Cliches yes, but massively important lessons to learn all the same. I highly recommend this film to anyone who is feeling a little bit disillusioned with life.

It will give you hope and even if it doesn't it will make you laugh a little bit.

I've never seen "Scrubs" so I come to this one an innocent to this Zach guy who wrote, directed and stared in this very eccentric, touching, sad, romantic comedy.

"Garden State" wondefully catches the lovable, mad characters you meet in life who change the world around you.

The sense of humour won't be everyone's cup of tea but I watched it with my mate and we had a really good laugh. My mate's a bit emotionally repressed and didn't like the love story bits but, personally, I fell in love with Natalie Portman too.

Also very uplifting. Smashing!

What a wonderful film...I was amazed at the poetry of the dialouge and the intensity of the emotion pouring out onto the screen. As a Debut film/script I think Zach done a tremendous job and as I am a budding film director come script writer this film was totally inspirational. I recommemd you watch this film on a rainy day, when your feeling low and drink a lovley glass of wine and you'll just love this film. Great script, funny dialouge, and beatifully filmed.

This film reminds me very much of 'Lost in Translation', not so much the story, but of the way it is told. The plot doesn't really begin or end, it really just follows a portion of the main characters life, but you still get drawn in to the lives of the characters and find yourself hoping for their respective happiness.

Not really the comedy you might expect, but there are some laugh out loud moments. All in all a good start for writer/director Zack Braff.

Ok, if you've seen Scrubs more than once you'lll find it very hard to not see JD when you see Zach Braff's character. I'm not going to completely pan this film because in all honesty I slept after 50 mins and it was a very good sleep. It's quirky style may appeal to some - but not really to me. My girlfriend thought it was ok and that in itself should condemn this film into obscurity. If you like Zach Braff stick to Scrubs. Nuff said.

This film is from the Jewish angst school of whimsy. Billed as a comedy drama, it is neither. The main attempts at humour revolve around a German Shepherd who takes a fancy to Zach Braff's knee and a smaller pooch - described in the credits as 'masturbating dog' - belonging to Nathalie Portman's mother. There is no sexual tension between the main players. What a waste of the sensual Portman! Ian Holm plays Zach's Dad and, according to the credits he needed a 'dialogue coach' in order, presumably, to get the posh Joisy accent right. The whole thing is a mess. The editing is poor and the result of having Braff direct his own script is pure self-indilgence. I doubt he'll ever get the chance again.

This is a masterpiece. We sat and enjoyed the wonderful story of a man who ran away to LA from New Jersey as quickly as he could, after he caused his mother to be a paraplegic after tripping over the dishwasher door. His father blamed him and thus, they never really shared any growing up moments and therefore, when his mother dies, there are many issues to be faced. Zach(Scrubs) has written a fantastic film for his stardom and alongside Natalie Portman, he ooozes such brilliance, that you hardly notice it. He has a great way of making his face look bored and sad, yet you don't notice it intil later in the film when he finds and realises happiness. Then you see how it looks on his face - you know how he felt before. (You'll see what I mean if you rent it) Some great supporting acts : dippy gravedigger thief friends and their mum, and a great soundtrack. I could not fault this film at all. I am surprised it is not talked of more - so go on, rent and enjoy and tell your friends. Cult Classic, bit similar to Harold and Maude?

This film is completely wonderful in so many ways. The acting is superb, the scenes are slightly surreal but believable, the dialogue is witty and irreverent, and the subject matter is so absolutely relevant to anyone who feels slightly disenfranchised by their life.

This film was absolute rubbish: a corny, pretentious and pseudo-angst-ridden film that only the American's can make.

The soundtrack was equally poor, with the possible exception of a Nick Drake track. The characters were highly self-absorbed and irritating, especially the one played by Natalie Portman.

Some may like this kind of contrived tripe, but it wasn't for me.

I was looking forward to this film, and it starts promisingly. There are some sparsely populated, genuinely quirky shots near the beginning which give you an insight into Largeman?s blanked-out world of pills. Then Natalie Portman turns up. You know the kind of character who?s ?mad?; ?mad? so that they have to keep on telling you just HOW ?kooky? they are? That?s her. And it?s with her appearance that the film becomes desperately, wannabe quirky. LOOK. A guy living in a BOAT. At the bottom of a GORGE. How MAD is that? I preferred Natalie Portman as a knowing child actor in Leon. In fact, she was also tolerable in Beautiful Girls, which is a better coming-home-to-face-the-past film than Garden State. So OK, it?s her character in Garden State that?s too sugared really, but she manages to add an extra layer of cutesiness to the role, and she should be blamed for that.

Garden State is written by Zach Braff, best known for his role as JD in Scrubs, telling the story of an emotionally vacant Andrew Largeman (Zach Braff), who is forced to return home to New Jersey following the death of his mother. On his return, he meets Sam (Natalie Portman) and old friend Mike (Peter Saarsgard) who help him deal with his past and reasons for leaving. This is a smart, funny and endearing film, in which Braff shows great flair and imagination as a writer/director as well as playing the lead character with skill and empathy. Some of the scenes and encounters are extremely odd but it only helps to make the film more endearing and watchable. Some of the oddball antics of Scrubs are evident in the film but it is refreshing different and shows Braff to be both a talented observer of human behaviour and great comedic director.

I'm a hard person to please these days. Apart from Hotel Rwanda, which was ok, i have been totally disappointed with almost every film i have seen in the last few months. I don't know what i was really expecting from this film, but i really enjoyed it. Great acting, simple clean and pleasant plot and some genuinely hilarious moments. Sometimes it almost over stepped the line into Dawsons Creek type sentimentality, but the humour and acting kept it safe and it was sometimes quite moving actually. Been so long since i rated a film over 2 stars. Not everyone's cup of tea, but a very nice couple of hours wasted indeed.

I've been putting it off to watch this movie cos i have heard so many mixed reviews but i am so glad i did. It was smart and funny and generally just a really good movie.

I can't believe how long I'd anticipated watching this and what a let down it turned out to be. Natalie Portman was as engaging as ever but that was the only reason I found not to turn off completely. I was left with a distinct 'is that it??' feeling at the end and expected so much more from the talents involved. A plot would have been nice too.

Surely this must have been categorized incorrectly. Can not recall laughing once. One of these films that you count down the minutes, hoping it will develop or end.

This film was dreadful - I almost lost the will to live halfway through. Guaranteed to render the most cheerful person depressed!

I can't imagine what king of depressing, dysfunctional upbringing Zach Braff must've had to pruduce such navel gazing, self pitying bulls**t for his first feature. Must do better.

Yawn yawn yawn. This film goes nowhere and says nothing. Its only an hour and half but feels longer. Avoid.

Few films relate to our lives today, most of us look for escapism in our movies and that is what we get. Garden States is a movie about young people in the 20s and the normal things that happen to them. Learning to deal with the realisation that your home town is a backwater and your friends are a bunch of drug addled losers is just part of the process. A truly uplifting film with a cool downtempo soundtrack, this stayed with me long after the final credits rolled and is due for a second watch very soon.

Rent it now, then buy the soundtrack.

We watched 20 minutes, but by then we were totally put off by the huge amount of foul language. We also could not see where the film was going, so we stopped viewing. Not sure why we chose it!

What was this supposed to be - a comedy ?. It had some jokes but none make you laugh out loud. What a dull film and a huge disappointment. Zach Braff from the excellent TV series Scrubs plays Andrew who comes hometown for his mother's funeral. His character is so dull it can almost send you asleep. Natalie Portman fairs better as the zany Sam but even her character was borderline obnoxious. None of the people in the film seemed real or engaging. Whilst watching these 'crazy kids' go from one location to another in an attempt to either discover themselves or just have fun you can be forgiven for wondering that is all very well and nice but where is the storyline. If you can managed to stay awake to watch the credits roll you will have just wasted 2 hours of your life. Meaningless film.

Very slow and hard work, wouldn't recommend watching unless you like rubbish films.

A bit dull really, tries hard to be whackily whimsical but it feels like a lot of films you've seen before,A little of Zach Braff looking a bit sad and alienated goes a long way.

Laugh out loud funny, great acting and very moving. And fall in love with Natalie Portman all over again.

Perhaps this is just not my type of film, but I found it typical of a lot of American style 'chick flicks'. Basic storyline of a single chap trying to get his life back in shape after causing his mother in a freak accident to become wheelchair bound, he then returns to New Jersey 'Garden State' after hearing of his mothers death, he then finds love in the form of Sam (Natalie Portman) and his life changes - end of! The film is rather abstract in relation to the lead actor being rather spaced out on perscription drugs but overall it is rather slow and fairly dull throughout, a film which keeps you waiting but never delivers. Why some people have awarded this 5 stars is beyond me.

my guess would be that this would be the director's first film. i would also feel sure that he was in his late twenties and wanted to say something important about life and love. and he does try to, that fact that it's too juvenile to have any real gravitas doesn't detract from the fact that this film does have some real charm and great casting.

Okay, now I have time for gentle bitter sweet comedy dramas, but this was just the dregs! The guy from Scrubs - aweful. Natalie Portman - Unbearbly, mind bogglingly aweful. The script - Unfathomably, tediously, stomach-churningly aweful. The direction - pedestrian at best. The soundtrack - AWEFUL. DO NOT SEE THIS FILM OR YOU WILL ETERNTALLY REGRET WASTING YOUR PRECIOUS TIME. Goddammit I hated this film so much...

A really good black comedy / romance with excellent performances by all the cast. Natalie Portman just gets better and better, and Zach Braff has the tone and timing just right. Its a story of coming home again to small town life and of finally growing up, and as such is ideal for any young adult to watch. The director handles the story well, revealing each characters back story bit by bit and creating characters you may not identify with but who you can come to care about. Only in the ending did I find the direction a little clumsy, but that is the only thing which stops this being a masterpiece. Even with that in mind this is an intelligent, well crafted and enjoyable movie and one I'd highly reccomend.

Mr Braff is almost sickeningly talented and this film showcases his acting/producing/directing abilities to the full. Quirky, sad and funny in turns, this film left me feeling curiously philosophical. I loved it. To add balance to this review I have to add that not everyone will like it. But that's less a criticism of the film, more to highlight that because I'm right, therefore not everyone is as brilliantly perceptive as me. Emperors new clothes anyone?

Read all the other reviews and apart from those with the 'We're all gonna die' outlook the fedback was good. And there were moments. I just didnt get it that all!

I suppose we are getting old - in our pre-parenting days we would visit the cinema every weekend at least once and watch anything, our evening watching this one was spent thinking when is something going to happen? Felt it never really got going, disappointed as rented on strength of other reviews - not one for us, didn't care what happened or about any of the characters. Oh well, back to Roly Mo!

The movie sees Zach Braff return his home town from Hollywood to attend the funeral of his mother. In Hollywood he has been living the life of a struggling actor and on returning he falls in love with a local girl (Natalie Portman). The characters and situations are quirky but totally unengaging. Rent something else - unless you are a die-hard Zach Braff or Natalie Portman fan.

You’ll get as much back from this film as your prepared to give it. Watch it with interest and it’s one of the most refreshing Hollywood films in a long time, Americans can actually write good stories if given the chance. However it you expect to see the usual Hollywood predictable drivel you’re not going to like this. The stories refreshingly realistic and down to earth, a must see.

I expected much more from this film as I like Zack Braff. Ok, so it was his first stab at directing ... but it wasn't very funny and very s l o w. Some of the scenes with Natalie Portman and her loony family and the hamsters did raise a smile though.

call me old fashioned or of a cold heart but i didnt find this movie any entertaining or mind opening... not my cup of tea... if u want some psychological or emotional stuff then rent this movie.. but its not clever either.. tho its very true and feels more like a documentary of a guy then a movie....

But she really loves me, yeah she does, look I got her crying in a phone booth near the end, i'm a player baby!

You know what, i liked this movie.... its emotive, well tries to be.... but the acting is fab... well it tries to be.... it just feels like this movie is trying to be something.... to hard! Dont get me wrong, Natalie Portman is amazing in this - and if your a fan i think you will enjoy it. Its up there in terms of V for Vendetta (acting wise). Abit soppy, but you know what... you should be expecting that from a film like this. Its worth a watch! You might just fall in love...

This film has managed to find it's way to number 226 in imdb.com's 250 greatest films in history. Quite how it managed this acheivement is completely beyond me. Part of the problem, for me, is Zach Braff - who's acting never really engaged me, and whose character didn't seem terribly appealing or memorable. Contrary to some other reviews, i thought Natalie Portman's character acually saved the film - without her lively and captivating performance, i don't think i could have sat through to the end. I had hoped Garden State would have been the orrignal, engaging and charasmatic indie film which it had been hyped as, but unfortunately it fell very short of my expections. Pitty.

This movie was a bit of a disappointment for me. The beginning was lacklustre and pretty non-engaging. However this was, in part, a reflection of the main characters lack of emotion, and as the film progressed I warmed to the characters and their little interactions. There are some lovely captured moments during the last third but I felt that all the main issues within the film were never really addressed, and when touched upon were very wishy washy and unconvincing. As for the ending, it was shockingly bad. All tied up in a completely unbelieveable and soppy bow.

You watch this film and after 5 minutes you wonder what direction the story will take. After 20 minutes your still wondering and after 45 minutes you realise there is no direction. Eventually you wonder why you took the time to watch this in the first place.

Disappointing as I had high hopes for this when I read the crtitical reviews. Although it had its moments it just didn't grab me and it was difficult to stay involved. Natalie Portman's characterisation was noteworthy and the film certainly wasn't rubbish but after a slow start it didn't really gain enough momentum for me to come away from it feeling fulfilled. I found it difficult to deside whether or not I'd liked it and I don't think I'd watch it again.

Scrubs is, by a long way, the funniest show on TV; Zach Braff is THE man: funny, charming, clever, caring, witty ....etc. He's also the guy who wrote, directed and starred in this film and is the reason why we rented it. To be honest, I was a a bit disappointed. The film had some hilarious moments and was touching. There were some original and imaginative scenes but the whole thing was rough around the edges. The inexperience of the production team showed. Zach's character starts off in a drug induced state of depression. The film shows how he gradually lifts out this malaise but it goes on forever. Despite the laughs, I felt like a needed a happy pill after watching it. And ... for goodness sake. A dog humping someone's leg may have been funny and/or original thirty years ago but in 2005, it is just old.

This film is one of those films that trendies believe is cool to have watched and thought funny!?! Lemmings! If you do want to watch this film, make sure you have a backup film, as you may feel as let down as I did by Garden State.

Guy re-thinking his life returns to hometown where he deals with distant parent and friends in stasis. Meets Natalie Portman and then feels much better. No, not Garden State but Beautiful Girls: which is incidentally a much warmer, engaging and well-done film.

What's annoying about this film is they have to keep saying how different and deep they are. The most irritating thing is that your whole life is supposed to change by yelling over a hole in the ground and meet potsmokers and annoying, supposedly 'quirky' girls like Portman's character. You want life changing? Watch 'To Live' or Kikujiro, not a bunch of pre-teens trying to do meaninful Dawsons Creek.

I cannot understand why there are so many rave reviews about this film. I managed to watch the first 10mins then switched it off. All I could hear was f**k in every sentence, not that im against swearing but it was just completely unnecessary and distracting. That coupled with a funeral to start the film and boring characters i switched off feeling completely cheated out of a great sunday evening chillout before another stressful working week.

Yes, this film did make me laugh out loud in places and yes it's generally watchable but it left me feeling a bit flat. The best bits for me were the music which gave a more emotive reaction than the film itself!

From watching Zach Braftman on Scrubs I was really looking forward to this film. HOWEVER this film was terrible. It was no comedy and the language was distasteful to say the least. I'd urge you not to rent this out, big waste of time!!

It's pretty easy this is the most genuine and best romantic comedy ever made. the script and the direction by Zach Braff is amazing and anyone between the ages of 18-35 should be able to find something to relate to. original funny moments, a brilliant soundtrack and Nat Portmans best performance to date make this a must see for anyone.

I have a hate of (particularly American) TV actors who try their hand at films. However, this film was surprisingly good - well shot, scripted and acted. Not as good as a Wes Anderson but up there with the Huckerbees, Little Miss Sunshine and Napoleon Dynamites of the world.

Ok so there were a few moments that made me smile in this film and once again Natalie Portman was on top form. The problem was that the story wasn't that interesting and was one I've seen dozens of times. A kid returning home after many years and 'finding' himself. I kept waiting for a twist which never came. Not awful enough to turn off but I can't see me watching it again.

If you like self-indulgent, turgid, shallow film-making you will love this. It's not that I don't like films that deal with emotion, but I like them to deal with emotion in an intelligent, and thoughtful manner. Garden State reminded me of something that would have been written by a 16 year old boy full of frustrated romantic notions, but utterly unable to communicate them in anything but the most obvious of ways. It was cringe-worthy in parts, and they were the best bits. A series of obvious set-pieces, with a soundtrack, does not a movie make. Enjoy it if you can, but please do not try to tell me this is good movie making.

Didn't like this at all, very self consciously quirky, off the wall etc which just adds up to a great big yawn. Not badly acted but with nothing much to say and all a bit sixth formish really.

Fortunately, it became apparent how poor this was after the first 25 minutes. Time to give up and watch something else instead.

OK, so it's got no CGI, a plot and it's been edited properly instead of randomly jumping all over the place to try and make it seem more exciting, and the cast can act, does that make it a good film, unfortunately not! There are so many better indie films out there that you ought to wait fot this to come on chanel 4.

Very boring film - had trouble staying awake despite being Natalie Portman fan

A friend of mine raved on about this film as being a little indie treat. But 'Clerks' this ain't. Rather, it's a very silly story about a young man, Andrew Largeman (Zach Braff, who plays the lead in 'Scrubs' and also wrote and directed this movie). Zach clearly models himself on Ray Romano from 'There's something about Raymond', clearly a favourite of Zach's as the show even gets a namecheck towards the start. This is an odd film, and not one I would particularly call a 'comedy', although the way it deals lightheartedly with death is not too heavy, which is a relief. The film starts with Andrew Largeman being told via answerphone that his paraplegic mother has died at their home in Newark. He doesn't cry - he hasn't cried since he was a child - and somewhat reluctantly (after a pointless and overlong scene in a Vietnamese restaurant where he works) he decides to go to the funeral. He has not seen his parents in many years, having moved to boarding school and then to Los Angeles to have a go at acting, where he has enjoyed considerable success playing a retarded guy. The rest of the film follows Andrew around, as he bumps into various schoolfriends from his past - all of whom are pretty objectionable - and a rather quirky young girl Sam (played by Natalie Portman) who suffers from epilepsis and is a chronic liar, but is the film's nicest character by far. Some of the better scenes involve when Andrew and Sam meet for the first time, in the hospital waiting-room, and Sam cannot believe that Andrew isn't really retarded. As for the rest of the film, it's all pretty pointless to be honest. I was expecting much better, but in the end it's just another silly movie that is unlikely to entertain many people over 30, sadly.

i am very open minded with all types of arts and culture and all types of movies. i had no expectations. but it was crap. the character didnt suit zach braff....and no i wasnt expecting him to be JD....he just didnt play this dude well. i could jus see an actor trying to play an unhappy guy. even though its his movie. his characters. that he created. the best thing in the movie was natalie portman. she was so cute in this movie. overwhelmingly cute. (not her looks...the character she played and her silly quirks...it was adorable) A good character wasted in a crap movie. Braff was trying too hard create something 'indie'. it didnt work.

This is a great film, especially considering it's Braff's first attempt at writing and direction. It has a slightly melancholic undertone to it which tends to make the relationships and storyline that little bit more poignant. It also has some funny laugh out loud moments, so you get a good mix of emotions in the one film. What's more it has one of the best soundtracks I've heard in a film for ages. Well worth giving a go!

Transferring his goofy persona in 'Scrubs' to something more delicate and considered must have been a challenge but Zach Braff proves he has an eye for human frailty that many up-and-coming filmmakers simply can't match. 'Garden State' is a subtlely funny and emotionally wrought drama that tends to hint rather than pontificate about the thoughts and feelings of the characters.

Braff himself is excellent and convincingly switches the madcap energy of JD into the inner numbness of Andrew Largeman. Natalie Portman gives a wonderfully amusing and endearing performance as the kooky girl who breaks through Andrew's cold exterior and it is possibly her finest role since 'Leon'. She is mesmerising in every scene she's in and her character's inner vulnerability makes her all the more intriguing. Peter Sarsgaard is also great fun as Andrew's directionless friend with a trailer trash mother and he balances Braff's withdrawn performance neatly. Finally, the wonderful soundtrack heightens the power of the fine script with some thoughtful interludes (The Shins are a particularly inspired choice).

However, the film doesn't quite pull off the Woody Allen observations it strives for and the ending feels a little too neat and tidy after the complexity of the relationships it has created. Ian Holm is also sadly underused as Andrew's father and their faltering relationship could have been turned into a far more interesting sub-plot. Still, a great start to Braff's directorial career and I hope his next effort continues in this vein.

I have to say this really was the best film i have seen, I could watch it over and over. Its just a normal film which reflects real life, Zach is amazing in it. Just a real feel good movie. Highly recommended.

I'll keep this short coz given the amount of other reviews I doubt anyone will ever read this. So, great film, hopefully Braff will be a major player in hollywood soon as he totally speaks to the 90's generation who have yet to find their place in the world (we're not all high flying lawers etc. as most films would have you believe). I mean, for example 'Red Eye'! come on! she was what? 27, and in charge of a whole chain of hotels? I think. And he was like, an experienced assassin who happened to be around the same age?. Add 20 years and we're in business. Or at least I think so anyway. Bit bitter me. Don't get me wrong, it was a great film, and I love Wes Craven, but a little realism would've been nice! Personally I think 'Jayma Mays' as Cynthia was the best thing in that film. I actually skipped back to her scenes after the film had ended. Noooo, Not for that! Just thought she was awesome, magnetic, if you will. Shame she went on to do that awful, what was it? Epic Movie? Waste of talent. I really hope she finds her way into some better roles. Hot and funny is a rare combination. Sorry, I get lke this after a few beers. Anyway, Garden State is really good! So much for keeping it short.

I am not fond of movies talking only about love at all but this movie is very emotional and very profound. It is just a bit boring at the beginning... it really starts off when Natalie Portman comes in. Zach Braff and Natalie Portman could not possibly be any better. It really makes you think about love as the most important thing of life. Watch it! It's just great!

I started watching this film determined to find good in it. After all, I like Zach Braff. I have to say that it is good, but not wow as some reviwers would have you believe. Mind you, watching films is such a subjective experience that it would remiss of me to suggest that you will think the same. Some great comic moments and enjoyable dialogue, but on the whole there is the clunkiness that comes, perhaps, with a first time screenplay. Why, for example, does the main character not take up with his father (Ian Holm) the fact that he has been drugging him since the age of ten? Ian Holm's character does not get out of the starting blocks and he looks almost embarrassed when he starts crying. Why say that he feels guilty for his mother's death and take this issue no further? Zach, Zach, this could have been s much more... ah, well, next time maybe. A 6/10 film.

Hollywood - what are you playing at? A Brilliant film - written and directed by first timer Zach Braff (Scrubs), exploring (amongst other things), the complex nature of father & son relationships. The characters in the film are fantastic (Natalie Portman in particular), as is the writing. It is witty, poignant, happy and sad - all without any semblance of shmaltz. If you like creative & intelligent drama/comedy/romance - you'll love this.

I thought this was funny and it made me think that a lot of the scenes and anecdotes were probably taken from real life events and people, they were just too odd to be made up. I thought Natalie Portman was a little hottie in it too, she had a kind of quirky Audrey Hepburn vibe to her.. I had some good french cheese whilst watching this film, and I enjoyed both equally.

This is pretty good, very funny to begin with but kinda disappears up itself. For anyone who has given this a 5-Star review, Donnie Darko, Eternal Sunshine and Beautiful Girls are all sooooo much better - check them out as well!

I watched this twice - first time found it a little depressing, second time I really enjoyed it! It's quite subtle, and there are some highly amusing lines you might miss if you don't pay attention. Basically, it's a love story - but quite a good one.

I saw this at the London Film Festival last year and was completely blown away. Zach Braff is a genius. The script is funny, poignant and sad, and Braff is a superb actor. Natalie Portman is also brilliant, and this is a story that everyone can relate to. I've been sneaky and bought the Region 1 version (which is out now) because I simply could not wait. Excellent stuff. See it now.

For a directorial debut, Zach Braff has done well. A great cast, a good soundtrack and all in all a very much enjoyable film. I dont know what really made me like it, but unless you have a personality disorder, you cant help but like it. Natalie Portman is excellent in a role which see's her a million miles away from recent space adventures, and Zach Braff is great as initially an emotionless guy getting through a strange period in his life.Great film, definately one to be added!

The bad language in this was so frequent that we turned it off after 10 minutes, though I'm unsure why we left it that long. To add to this the story line was also very weak and showed no sign of improvement.

It's a Sunday afternoon and the sun is shining on London town. I should by all rights be out actually enjoying the sun while we are blessed for these couple of months. However, in my infinite wisdom, I decide to grab hold of Garden State, draw the curtains tight to create that cinematic experience and enjoy what has been recommended to me as a very funny 'napoleon dynamite-esque' film. At this point if I were to describe the film in a single word in would be solemn. Far cry from Napoleon and his mighty fine moonboots. However, it is a good film, very real and yet quite strange as the lives of those involved you have some affinity with but no direct experience of. I'd watch again and maybe enjoy it more now that I won't expect much more than a quirky love story.

Zach Braff has done an amazing job here writing, directing and starring in one of the best feel-good films I've ever seen. Surrealist comedy and emotional content rarely sit together well, but here it's an absolute success. Nearly all the jokes are hits, and had a tear in my eye more than once. I can't recommend it enough, especially to mid-20s people still looking for their direction in life.

I read a couple of ok reviews for this when it was originally out at the cinema, and was quite taken by the plot, so added it to my rental list. Boy, am I glad I did?! An excellent film all round. Engrossing and touching. Understated and unpretentious. Well written, acted and shot. Well done to Zach Braff for producing such an excellent piece of work. And Natalie Portman also deserves a mention for a great performance. Well worth watching.

I have thought of a great use for Garden State ! Keep a copy in the house, and then, when you need to do one of those un-loved tasks around the house (cut the grass, unblock drains, that sort of thing) give yourself the choice of doing that or watching this movie ! Great motivation !!

I really enjoyed Garden State and like another reviewer says if you like Eternal Sunshine I think you'll like this. Again like others I found myself having a silly grin on my face while watching it, I could relate to so many scenes and have/will probably find myself in similar situations. The cast are superb, Portman is fantastic as Sam. But special praise to Zach (Scrubs) Braff for such a ballsy script and a great directional debut. Top drawer, 8.5/10.

Not a 'brain in neutral' kinda thing at all. If you're renting this 'cos you like Zach Braff's acting in 'Scrubs' you could be in for a surprise. Quite a pleasant one though...

A joyous script, which is odd considering the subkect matter. Natalie Portman is amazing and it shows how photographing a person in different ways makes them seem completely different. Her demeanour and appearance could not be more different than 'closer. Her performance is entrancing. Everyone else is great and the line 'he's studying crimnology and he used to be one of those children with flies on their faces'is the best i've heard in ages. Watch it.

I really liked this movie, performances were great, there were some good comic moments and some very heart wrenching ones too. I found is quirky depressiveness, enchanting and strangely uplifting as the complex characters evolved. Watch this film, it's good !!

Having cringed through the occasional episode of Scrubs I was amazed that Zach Braff wrote, directed AND starred in this! It's a humane , warm film which succeeds in it's quirky presentation of New Jersey life where-in my view-Kevin Smith has always failed. If you enjoyed Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind then you would probably enjoy this, as it has the same wilful brand of quirkiness about it. The use of music is also great, with chilled out indie, folky music from the likes of Coldplay and Nick Drake which go well with the general, subdued ambience. The central character's various 'issues' are dealt with in a sensitive and empathic way which is a real contrast with Hollywood's normal sensationalism. In addition the unconventional characters are convincing and an antidote to the mundane conformity of more mainstream films.

Zach Braff. I know his name now. I was totally delighted by this movie and even more impressed to discover that Zach Braff had written and directed it! I loved it. That last two movies I enjoyed this much were Lost in Translation and Eternal Sunshine of the... A few nice references to American pop culture that may go unoticed by uk viewers. Not everyone's cup of tea I can imagine but hit the spot for me.

Garden state is a beautiful quirky dark comedy, which is head and shoulders above the majority of its peers. In terms of plot, the summary of man returns home to 'discover himself' does the whole piece a real disservice. Well acted across the board and directed with an understated class. Both Natalie Portman and Zach Braff shine whilst not appearing 'Hollywood' which maintains the universe created by the direction and scripting. This film left a smile on my face and in terms of a genuine feel good movie you will struggle to beat this. If you enjoyed this why not try; Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind or Good Will Hunting.

This was one of the first DVDs I added to my selection list a couple of months ago and it has taken until now for it to be delivered to me. It was definitely worth the wait. I really enjoyed the story and there seemed to be a subtle chemistry between Zach Braff and Nathalie Portman. All in all, a great film!

I went to see this film at the cinema and I had to see it again on dvd, it's such an interesting and brilliantly delivered film. The main star of course is Scrubs star Zach Braff in a role far removed from his wacky daydreaming doctor in the best sitcom around at the moment. He both writes and directs this absorbing tale of a disillusioned young man who comes home to attend his mother's funeral and to resolve issues with his father. Braff is superb but for me the star is Natalie Portman as the zany love interest. It's a story which will have you hooked from the start and is only let down by a dissapointingly predictable finale. Still if anyone wants to see the upcoming star in films watch this 'cause it has two in Portman and Braff.

A wonderful thoughtful film, with stunning performnaces from Zach Braff (also the writer and director) and an outstanding performance from Natalie Portman who follows up her role in Closer with an even better role. Peter Sarsgaard lends wonderful support to what is a film that is funny, sad and uplifting.

My reason for watching this was that Zach Braff was in it. If you are a fan of Scrubs you will understand why. Emotional is the only way to explain the feelings felt when watching this film. It may not suit everyone as it is not full of action, but if you can connect on an emotional level with this film, you will never forget it. The sound track to this film is amazing, watching a person (Zach Braff)go back to where they were born and having to face up to a number of issues that they have chosen to hide from, was an emotional journey in itself, especially if you can connect with how this guy is feeling. Seeing everyone he hasn't seen for years, seeing that they haven't changed. Then out of the blue, someone who has struggled to cope with his emotions all his life, to meet someone so amazing, is everyones dream. 4 days of knowing this person proves to show true love, a love he cannot leave behind and eventually decides to stay for. If this this doesn't touch your heart, you don't have one. Maybe this is a film I can understand and connect to, but maybe it's not for everyone. There are not many films that touch my heart, but this is one. Well done Zach...

Both me and my husband enjoyed this film. It is quite sad in places, and thought-provoking but it is quite funny too, and romantic in a quirky way. Slow paced but not boring, rent it!

This isn't a bad film by any stretch of the imagination. The acting is first class, directing much better than expected and the comedy opens some new doors that just haven't been opened before. However the plot just doesn't seem to go anywhere. Worth a watch though, Zach Braff will go on to do so much better. Good for first film!

Its not a very eventful film, but there is a lot of stuff still going on. Zach Braff is much more subdued in this role and you get to feel for why he is what he is as you go along. However in my view Natalie Portman steals the show with her performance. She manages to really output the randomness of her character and does an overall great job. The storyline meanders along and you get to see how their relationship prospers in a very normal way. Its very much like 'Lost in Translation' in terms of its pace but is much shorter. One highlight of the film is the cop scene, the copturns out to be a mate of Zach's and he's really funny. What's bad is the editing of the movies, the cop scene was cut by half and only when you go into the extras do you get to see all of it. Also you don't really get to see into Zach's past at all or how his mother died. Overall a quality film, there were alot of personal touches of his in this so I doubt he'd be able to write something similar again.

If you rent this film you will have to endure diabolical acting combined with a dreadful story line. That is of course unless you do what we did ie. switch it off and send it back to Screen Select with all possible speed.

How any one could find this film 'wonderful and hilarious, a little gem, perfect or any other of the 5 star overburdened praise statements is beyond me. I rented it because I thought I'd try something different from your normal blockbuster type film with an A rated star or two in it. I thought with all the 5 star awards it must be OK and all the negative criticism was not to be believed -Bad mistake! This film starts slow, gets slower, then as it begins to pick up, it ends. It wastes the premise for a good plot, a young man damaged by what has happened to his mother who has to return and face his life when she dies. It wastes it by bland, featureless acting, interspersed with weird and cooky characters, by not playing the good music on the soundtrack for long enough, and for underuse of Ian (Bilbo) Holm and overuse of cooky Natalie (Star Wars) Portman. She should have stuck with the Sith! Could have been good but actually was dreadful

This film started off slow and I was wondering if Zac had the film commissioned because of his Scrubs fame but this turned into a wonderful story of a 'normal' world and events. As the behind the scenes extra comments, the film doesn't have the usually stereotypical film characters but, again, more 'normal' but interesting and intruiging ones. I would definitely recommend this one.

Gave this every chance - but 30 minutes in couldn't take any more. Banal, unfunny, and ultimately dull. You can never get the time back!

This movie is brilliant, funny and original. It perfectly mimicks the lives of so many of my high school friends who continue to live in their small hometowns, rather than venturing out for bigger and better things. This said, many of the cultural references surrounding small town America may not be fully appreciated by English viewers. Still, it is one of the funniest and most touching films about my generation that I've seen in a long, long time.

It's a shame there isn't a '3.5 star' rating, as this film is reasonable without being outstanding. To be honest, whilst being mildly enjoyable, the film really doesn't provoke much in the way of feelings, and one is left at the end thinking 'So what?' It was released around the same time as 'Napoleon Dynamite', and both were reasonably similar films - low budget, slow-moving films in which not a lot happens. In Napoleon Dynamite, this is offset by the comedy of some of the situations and characters, but Garden State doesn't have the same incongruous setups in it. There are a few moments at which I grinned, but no real laugh out loud moments. And that's essentially the story of the film - not bad, but not enough to generate any particular response.

Some things just didn't add up. Zach Braff's character was supposed to have suffered a traumatized childhood - his mother was depressed, even before he managed to cripple her as a 9 year old, then he was put on prescribed medication and sent away to boarding school... so why does he come across so calm and confident when he returns to his home town for his mother's funeral? Well I think it because this story was written by a pretty smug and comfortable middle-class guy who obviously hasn't really suffered all that much in his life. If he had he'd know that people who go through those types of experiences as children end up messed up with serious problems to sort out. I also want to know why Natalie Portman's character seems to be behaving like a 14 year old. I think the idea is she's supposed to be 'quirky' - but it just doesn't add up. Is she a retard? No. What is she? Nothing much. Like this film.

The heading is a little negative , and i didn't hate this film , but it's a great example of the writer/director attemping to be so quirky you almost long for some realism , not to say i don't appreciate a bit of strange mental escapism , but i get the feeling this got such great reviews in the USA because they love 'scrubs' so much and think Zach Braff can do no wrong.I wished i had liked this more , maybe i was just feeling a little intolerant that day, who knows , just watch a great film like napoleon dynamite instead.

Enjoyed this film - it only just passed the 10 minute test but we stayed with it and it turned out to be quite funny and often very sentimental - conveying lots of home truths about family relationships. A great pity that this copy seemed to be a bit damaged and the last 10 or 12 frames stuck. When I tried search, I got the end credits and no matter how many times I tried to clean it and rerun it, it still stuck. So - I will never know whether he stayed with her; whether she went with him or what! Maybe someone could enlighten me without giving the game away for other people?

With the help of an excellent sound track (featuring the spangly 'shins') and some snappy script writing and directing, this 2004 release really suprised me with its heart felt soft touch. Zac Braff was terrific as the numbed and disillusioned son of ian holm's up tight (for a good reason) dad. With some great scenes with his pack of old friends who he hasn't seen in years and a dog humping his leg just before he meets portman - the film ticks along at a nice pace. Leaving you trying to figure out what the story is building up to and when it finally does...feeling a bit gooey over some of the 'life truths' pinged between characters. Favourites are boats at the bottom of quarries and burying hamsters. Totally recommend this for a quiet, thinking night in and hopefully this won't be the last we see of Mr Braff's directorial talent.

Get over the fact that it's Zach Braff and you'll find a decent American-indie film. Good performances from Natalie Portman and supporting cast...

But not by me. Its like 'Donnie Darko' without the darko. A slice of life that without the icing sugar. So endearing and sentimental, a love story for the disenfranchised and disaffected. You have to hand it to Zach Braff, a great debut as both a writer and as a director. However if you have no patience or eye for subtleties, you wil be very bored, its a slow burner.

This film was an unusual choice for me - I selected it solely to listen to dubbed in Spanish because I am trying to improve my understanding of the language. It was a bit slow to get started but actually turned out to be original, quirky and very enjoyable. Don't watch it if you hate swearing though!

Zach Braff has demonstrated his comedy acting skills in Scrbs, but it seems that there is more to him than charisma on screen. Having written, directed anfd starring in this somewhat bizarre, but extremely funny film, my hat is most certainly off to this guy. A story about a young TV actor (Braff, which is apt) returning home after the death of his mother. The story unfolds to explain the dysfunctional relationship with his father and his unusal behaviour. Not a great deal happens, but the humour is present in every scene. One caveat, this film will appeal to those of you who enjoyed Napoleon Dynamite, not so sure about the rest of you.

JD from Scrubs is fantastic as the male lead and Natalie Portman also great as a kook ! Great film, highly recommended.

I quite enjoyed this film (four stars for me means i found it entertaining but wouldn't watch it again). However it cruised very close to irritating me with it's 'woe is me' tone. Thankfully the ever charming Natalie Portman provided enough reason to keep watching as at least I felt some affection for 1 of the characters. Overall I would say a film for eclectic tastes, or people into angst ridden generation X movies.

Clearly, this is (to use the old cliche)a love it or hate it film. But, PLEASE COME TO YOUR SENSES PEOPLE! It is banal to the point that I wanted to get a refund from the cinema I watched it at. There is no deep meaning here!!!! The characters are pathetic, the situation is pathetic, the 'comedic aspects' are pathetic. Pathetic, pathetic, pathetic. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

Starts off boring, carries on being boring...and it finishes boring. I'm not sure which aspects of this were meant to be comedic, but I certainly missed them. The characters were not engaging, or even likeable which, added to the non-events within the film, made it a complete chore to watch, and I ended up wishing that I had sat through an hour and a half of Scrubs instead.

Quirky and amusing, Zach Braff is extremely talented. I'd watch it again.

An emotional account of a not so disturbed young man and his dysfunctonal family. I could definately relate to most of it, I think we all can in our own way which is an attribute that is bound to make this film well liked by a wide variety of viewers.

Rent something else - unless you are a die-hard Zach Braff or Natalie Portman fan.

Natalie Portman comes across as really sexy in this film... she got my motor going!!! Especialy seeing her in bra & panties in a swimming pool! Apart from that I dont remember much about this film... If you liked 'Lost in Transilation' you like this!

This is a very engaging film. I had my doubts at the start but I found that I was being drawn into it and it is an enjoyable and rather heartwarming tale. A real achievement of this film is how you come to like the main players when it could so easily have been so very mawkish. A main player who has spent a lifetime on tranquilisers that now means he has no feelings for anything, not even the recent death of his mother. Another drifting character who suffers from epilepsy and continually lies. Yet you are brought to understand how they arrived at these states and really wish them well.

Decent indie film with some top tunes that'll have you peering at the soundtrack info at the end.

A slacker type movie that drifts along but just when I was wondering why I was wasting my time it hit me-sort of like when you first smoke dope and you can't understand what all the fuss is about. Likeable, good performances and an enjoyable soundtrack. Chill out man!

What an excellent film! It was refreshing and moving on so many levels. More a romantic drama than a comedy. The extras on this disc are well worth watching.

I came to this film with the opinion that it was gonna be an 'ego' film for Zach Braff. Thankfully it wasn't. It is a poignant film that shows how the death of a loved one can change your life for ever. If your a fan of Scrubs you may be surprised, as the character of Andrew Largeman is miles away from JD. But don't be put off as it shows Braffs' adaptabilty and wider acting skills. Give it a go. It's fantastic.

This film starts off pretty slowly but gathers pace as it goes along. This is done in line with the main character's gradual emerging from a cocoon of drugs. It's a quirky little film and definitely worth a watch.

There are only two films that have changed my outlook on life. This is one of them. Life with all its challenges and depressing details are portrayed well here and yet there is love and hope shining through. It just goes to show that despite all your problems there is always someone out there that will love you, if only you open your heart and mind. A fantastic uplifting yet reflective film with some excellent humourous touches.

Garden State is a film that does very little and yet has so much to say. A film not just about family and friendship, but about the little things in life too. It's also incredibly quirky and very funny to boot.

Zack Braff writes, directs and stars alongside Natalie Portman. After her wooden performances in the current Star Wars movies, it's easy to forget just how good an actress she really is. Anyone not moved by her breakout performance in Leon all those years ago must be dead and buried.
In fact, all the performances are excellent and though very little does happen in ninety minutes you can't help but get swept along by this very enjoyable and incredibly charming ride.

This movie presents the subtleties of life effortlessly, not an easy thing to do! It's got a lot of layers, some of which echoed the subtleties of my own infinite abyss.

I'd like to make it clear from the start that I think Natalie Portman is truely awesome!

Even so I wanted to give the most balanced review possible. So here goes, this film is brilliant. I have a great passion for movies where the central characters undergo great revelations and change their lives. Like The Breakfast Club, Rushmore, Taxi Driver, Lost In Translation. All feature excellent and well rounded characters.

In this film Zach Braff as the main charcter Andrew is excellent. He fills the role with the right amount of pathos and humanity. Also as I staid Natalie Portman is both exciting and mixed up. They go on a slow and meaningful journey together and discover that while many things have changed in their lives, they need to take chances to really move on

Over all this film is both funny, moving and pretty cool. Deeply Deeply Recommended.

I watched this film for 20 minutes and was still trying to understand it - gave up as a bad job. Perhaps I just wasn't concentrating but I prefer films where I just get wrapped up in the plot from the outset.

When I found out this starred and was written & directed by the Scrubs guy, I had a major "Oh, no!" moment. Not being a fan of Scrubs, I quickly tuned out -my wife confirming the first 20 minutes were "about nothing".

However, I found myself being pulled into the story, and enjoying the awkward way the main characters evolved in their relationships. The film contained just enough humour to keep the noir elements in balance.

Portman also featured prominently in my "Oh no" moment - I had yet to see a movie where she could act, so it was a pleasant surprise to accept her in the role rather than be embarrassed for her.

Garden State was a nice story - good characters, good soundtrack, well-written. It started slowly, but the deliberate pacing adds to the charm; you need to stick with it through the beginning.

I wouldn't class this film as amazing, i only heard good things about it... to be slightly let down to be honest. Very clever in parts, with twists in the story that keep you thinking.
But all thats spoit by it going far too cheesie at several points during the film.

Still worth a watch tho :)

This was one of those surreal, original films that was compelling to watch. Unpredictable and fresh.

Something brilliant and thought provoking in every scene. Laughter too, but not the cheap laughter, it was new, funny and sweet, utterly hilarious.

In my 50 years of watching films, good and bad, this must rate as the worst film that i have ever seen.

It took an hour to decide whether it was a comedy or a tragedy or a bit of both - it was neither.

It was pretentious, self indulgent and boring. In fact, it is the only film that has ever made me feel like writing a review. The acting was not bad but the content was trivial.

This is not real America let alone the real world. I do not mind the swearing if in the context in which it is found to be necessary but this was sheer padding for someone who cannot write a film script.

I feel sorry for the actors.

I liked this film, mainly because I'm a hopeless romantic ! Don't rent this film thinking it will be Scrubs all over again. It is a gentle and thoughtful film with only a light comic touch to it. Natalie Portman is excellent in this.

There are scenes in this movie that are very funny, touching, morbid, and heart warmingly human; together they make this an enjoyable experience which has an eye rested on everyday experiences and death with a dark sense of humour. Garden State enjoys the wonderful, sad and downright quirky aspects of human nature that even those of us that aren't-that-great have the privilledge to own. Definitely worth seeing, and made me laugh alot. However, this is occasionally a little slow, and the key moments of the film can seem rather drawn out at times. If you like something a little different and are happy to absorb weird, and occasionally wonderful characters, then I recommend this to you to check out.

this is one of the best films ive seen in ages! everything about it so good! such a difference for zach braff, (who directed and wrote this film so well) from scrubs. excellent cast and great acting from them all!

I imagine Zach Braff meant this rather trite and mediocre effort sincerely but it comes across as an irritating, cod-philosophising exercise in manipulating the vaguely existentialist twentysomething set. Braff tries very hard to come across as the troubled, sensitive archetype but his performance is dull at best and simpering at worst. Natalie Portman's even more irritating. Just look at how kooky and alternative she is! Try not to retch! Garden State thinks it's doing something very clever here but in reality it has as much depth as a paddling pool. And it's bloody dull to boot.

We didn't quite get this film at first, but we warmed to it. Very unusual.

Rented this after getting into scrubs and enjoyed it. The film deals with the concepts of depression, medication and living in the shadow of your parents. It's sad at times but ultimately it's a 'happily ever after' film. My girlfriend didn't think so however and was quite upset at the end. For me the over riding feeling of the film was that no matter how f###ed up your life gets, there's always something good round the corner - or something like that. (Although that sounds more cheesy than this film is.) Not a great film - but definately good and worth watching. (Especially if you enjoy odd ball characters and a film that lets you make up your own mind.) Written and Directed by Braff, it has some very funny moments and some quite touching scenes. Recommend if you liked Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Boil the kettle & make a cuppa. Tip it straight on your lap, it will be far more enjoyable (and quicker) experience than sitting through this film.

It's nice to get to see another side of Zack Braff in this film, besides his usual goofiness in Scrubs (which I love). I was a bit worried that the whole film was going to be about depression. The beginning of the film feels very numb - which makes sense a bit later on. It is a spot-on story about one guy 'finding himself' and standing up to his negative, controlling dad and waking up to life. Totally positive, completely life-affirming. Every 20-something girl or boy should watch this. Can't wait for the next Braff film!

Really enjoyed this film - it has some serious messages running through out but it has such a quirky, dark sense of humour - Really enjoyable and Zach (from Scrubs) is great - definitely worth seeing!

I tried twice to watch this before finally getting into it. However, once Natalie Portman arrives on the scene, it takes on a more interesting, amusing tone. What started off as another depressing film of familiar genre to Elizabethtown and others, ends as an uplifting love story.

Surreal and witty. I loved this movie. It has stayed with me in the few weeks since I viewed it, and I keep thinking I'd like to see it again. The man/soman who wrote/directed/whatevered this movie has been around. They've obviously really lived. They'd be the kind of person I'd love to have over for dinner. I really empathised with the main character and thought Julia Portman was endearing and watchable. The party scene was awesome.

Fantastic film! well acted and well written. Starring the very wonderful Zach Braff (scrubs, last kiss) and the delightful Natalie Portman (she's very clever you know) i didn't know much about this film and didn't know what to expect but needless to say what i got was great! The dialogue and cinematography was fantatic and i never knew until the end credits rolled that ZB had written and directed this film. Ideal for people who like films that have dialogue and are more character based rather than SFX based. If you liked Little Miss Sunshine and Transamerica then you'll love this. HOWEVER ZB has only starred in 2 films to date this one which is good and Last Kiss which isn't. Top job you talented weird looking man!

I really enjoyed this film, it's one that gets you thinking again about life. I enjoy Zach Braff's acting as he is very realistic. Would recommend but it may not be to everyone's taste as it is a bit Art house . Killer soundtrack!!

For someone as young as Zach Braff this film is a fantastic achievement. The cast were well thought out and the roles acted and directed to near perfection. In comparison to other films of a similar plot feel like this one is really outstanding in how it portrays tone and captures the whirlwind of emotions felt by it's protagonist without over doing it. I'd recommend this film to anyone... with the exception of maybe my grandparents due to one pretty explicit sex scene

A great film about dealing with the stuff of life and family....Good acting and great photography, with some off-beat moments. All round a good movie...some may find it slow, but they don't get the point....

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, Braff and Portman were excellent as were the supporting cast. the ending was perhaps a little cheesey but satisfactory nonetheless. Some touching moments in the film and a great soundtrack. Would definitely recommend it.

This film spoke to me. Now, I know that sounds all kinds of arsey but this film- it just said a lot about who I am and how I feel about the world. Zach Braff plays Large- a 'lost' twntysomething who returns home to New Jersey for a funeral. And while there are some laughs in the film it's not really the romantic comedy that the advertisers would have you believe. This is a much more subtle character drama. And while many (Scrubs fans in particular) will watch this and be dissapointed, for me this was an oasis on our wolrd of blockbusters and painting-by-number 'chick-flicks'.

This film is absolutely brilliant. I don't know where to begin, but I'll start with the main man behind it, Zach Braff. His direction... fantastic, he has got a good eye for a shot and the film flows brilliantly. His acting is really good too, showing excellent character development. He also wrote the film, and the story, whilst good and shows much deeper meaning, can sometimes take itself too seriously. However, on the whole, this film is really good, and I enjoyed watching it, and will probably buy it now.

It's taken me forever to get around to seeing this movie, but I'm glad that I did. It's a delightfully touching film. Beautifully acted and sensitively directed. Great soundtrack too.

I cannot fault this film. It's beautiful, funny, genuine, original, uplifting and moving. It's really easy to tell that the whole thing is a labour of love. The characters and the situations are totally believable. And after so many ROMCOMs out there it is sooo nice to see a love story between 2 real people!! Meaning people with real personalities. Also great to see something that does not follow a formula. Top notch. Rent it.

i loved it my fvorite movie

Zach Braff directs and is brilliant as the self medicating guy who can't face the world. Natalie Portman is the lady who unlocks his life and makes him see everything in a different light. She is a revelation. This is magical and quirky and should be watched with the one you love under a blanket, cuddling and holding hands. Peter Sarsgaard is inspired and this is possibly his finest moment. Ian Holm plays his small role to perfection and lends this piece his mighty presense - not that it needs it in the end. My heart soared. It made me laugh and cry. I try and see this movie once or twice a year.

When this film started, I was a little worried as I don't like odd films & this was certainly that! However, as it progressed its oddness only worked in its favour as it reflected the characters. I ended up absolutely adoring this film! It had some sad parts as well as hilarious bits- such a feel good film which everyone should see!!

Zach Braff does not venture far from his Scrubs alter ego DJ in this movie, but if you enjoyed him there you'll love Garden State. As Braff returns to his family home for his mother's funeral he reconnects with old school friends and is forced to re-evaluate his troubled life after meeting love interest Natalie Portman. Portman's quirky uninhibited nature sets Braff free from his father's (Ian Holm) psychatric diagnoses and sterile take on life. A journey involving grave robbing, drug taking, and riding around in side cars, it's an endearing and eccentric delight.

As a fan of 'Scrubs', I eagerly awaited Zach Braff's 'Garden State'. Braff's deadpan visual humour and directing style echo back to Hal Ashby and Mike Nichols circa 'The Graduate'. Saarsgard is remarkable, Portman is enchanting and Braff emerges as a new filmmaking talent. It is funny, heartfelt, sincere and as someone in my mid-twenties, it struck me as important subject matter, tackling the loss of a parent and the lost ideal of home. Individual in narrative structure, the film effortlessly unfolds as a seemingly random series of encounters with idiosyncratic characters and follows them on unexpected personal journeys.

Enjoyable film that has the ability to draw you in without realising it. The cast works well and the characters are excellent with strong performances. It is a touch long but worth sticking with it!

Once upon a time LoveFilm used to indicate whether you had already rented a particular film/movie. I was dissappointed that I had already seen this movie and on further investigation found out that this had been on my list 18 months ago.

This may not be to everyones tastes, it goes at quite a slow pace, doesn't have a huge storyline behind it. But the acting is good, and you do get drawn into Braffs world. I liked it, and thought that Braff did a good job of it all. Would recommend

Before watching 'The Garden State', my only knowledge of Zach Braff was the character he plays in the comedy TV series - 'Scrubs', quirky and entertaining, but quite different to this film. The development of the main character - 'Large' was excellently portrayed by Braff's sympathetic approach and the use of visual references throughout the film, I was instantly involved and wanted to know how he copes with the events that unfold around him. This story depicts human relationships and emotion very well without the usual 'Hollywood' gushing that is so common in mainstream American films and is therefore refreshing in its' approach. If you like films which are pleasantly lacking in violence, overly used bad language or excessive graphic sex (there is only a short scene with some sexual content) - this film is for you.

Fantastic movie, very well acted and the story is phenomenal!

The Move titled Garden State was in effect a touching comedy, weird in the ways of a boy having grown up away from his friends, returning to find them later much unchainged. The comic weirdness of it all truley reflects the vision of Zach Braff writing, Acting and directing skill. A must see.

This made me want to punch JD's face in. Pretenshis pile of rubbish. Like listening to Keane sing about nothing this film just made me angrier and angrier and I had to take a double dose of my meds. Surely JD knows nothing about being on suppresants because if he did he'd know they work best when snorted with gin. Know one EVER baths with their clothes on unless they've no control over their bowels. I'll N E V E R make a film this poor. Ever. I hope. If I do I hope people see it and then write reviews totally panning it. Awesome.

This cult film, written, starring and directed by Zach Braff (his feature film debut) is bizarre from start till finish and unfortunately a bit of a jumbled mess. Considered a ‘major success’ for the Scrubs actor it loses direction and meanders through to the end with no real climax or feeling of satisfaction for watching it. The film has an overall relaxed feel to it, reflecting the serene nature of the lead (Zack) and the drugged up medicated world he’s trapped in since actions in his tragic past whereby his father began dictating his life into a prescription-guided haze. It’s all about him finally returning home to New Jersey (the Garden state) after receiving word from his father that his mother has died. He hooks up with his old friends who still live there and also meets and ends up falling in love with an equally eccentric person (Natalie Portman). The film is full of oddball characters and awkward relationships that you probably wouldn’t relate to unless you were really unlucky (especially between him and his dad). It relies too much though on this for laughs as it doesn’t really feature any written jokes, though it will make you laugh out loud in places with its awkwardness and just plain bizarreness. The themes of the film are about love and awakening (one of the scenes towards the end of the film where they all scream into the ‘abyss’ is a scene of rebirth for the main character). It’s just that these aren’t really formulated into a film with any direction or real meaning. I haven’t seen a film in a long time where I’ve been waiting for the end credits to finally roll.

A very boring film. Dragged all the way through!

This was a terrible film, I watched it along with my boyfriend who agreed with my opinion on it. We just had to turn it off after an hour because we just couldn't stand to watch it anymore

Good film overall, very heartwarming. Not as good as a Scrubs episode, but then it shouldn't have to be - this is a different ball game after all. It's pretty standard Hollywood "boy finding himself" fare, but done with a bit of a twist. If you get the opportunity, then watch it! If you like Zach Braff, then obviously this will appeal to you, it's got a bit of an indie feel to it as well if you're into that sort of thing.

The critics raved about Zach Braff (Scrubbs) writing and directorial debut. I am not sure why? The story was a paper thin, bittersweet comedy about a guy returning to his past and tackling some inner demons. The fact that Braff managed to secure the scene-stealing Natalie Portman should give the film a chance but unfortunately Ms Portman is the sole highlight. Ian Holm strangely cast as Braff's father seems to permanently look bemused as if he has wandered onto the wrong filmset. As the end titles rolled I felt I had been cheated of 2 hours for no payback. If you like Braff watch scrubs!

Ok I admit it, I was sold on this movie by Zach Braff. Anyone who has seen Scrubs will know that he is a goofball, right? Wrong. What you get here is a bravura one man writing, directing and acting class. The story is slight Zach "Large Largeman" Braff returns to New Jersey for his mothers funeral. The opening scene alone is worth a Fruedian analysis, never mind the buch of odd characters who are his high school buddies. The character has been heavily medicated for 10 years, ever since an accident befell his mother and his psychiatrist father prescribed massive doses of medication for him. Its all too much for him as he starts to "kick" his habit, but its a wonderful journey for the audience. As the medication wears off the real "Large" starts to appear, and finally take some control of his life. Ably assisted by a wonderfully eccentris Natalie Portman and his permanently stoned grave digger best friend. Its a journey worth taking. Too intnse for some, too slow for others, the joy is in the details. All thoroughly well put together and related on a human level It says a lot about the weird stuff on our doorstep and the even weirder way we, and americans in particular, will go out of our way to avoid it. Simple story. Simply told. Simply brilliant.

I do not know what is more worrying - the horrendous self indulgent twaddle of this film, or the fact that so many reviewers appear to have enjoyed it! I'm with the people who recommend NOT watching this. Zach Braff is painful in this film, seeming to think he is emoting and projecting deep (oh, sooo deeep) meaning to his part. All you will want to do by the end of the longest 2 hours of your life is smack him. Natalie Portman and Ian Holm are too good for this drivel (and you suspect they know that). Awful.

This film suprised me. I went into it knowing very little about the story but thinking it may be interesting to see what Zach Braff had to offer behind the camera (usually a good way of seeing how their mind works). As a consequence of this I starting watching it with a blank mind and no pre-conceived ideas. In retrospect, I think this may have been what they were aiming for as I was in pretty much the same mental state as Andrew (Zach Braff) is in the film - a numb zone where the world seems to be going faster than him, he feels he is always one step behind but doesn't have the energy to get out of the rut. The fact that his psychiatrist father (Ian Holm, I am a big fan!) is the one who's been dosing him all through his childhood is a nice twist and adds an interesting, if slightly underused, subplot.

As the film progresses over the last couple of days before Andrew takes off for pastures new, he stops his meds and this is where the direction and acting come into their own. It would be too easy to ram that fact down the viewers throats, but the very gradual re-awakening of Andrews senses and the bizarre journey he takes to find a suprise present for him with his girlfriend (a very talented Natalie Portman - George Lucas, you should be ashamed) and old friend (an equally excellent Peter Sarsgaard), which include perfectly timed comic moments which you can recognize from your own experiences (the guy in the hardware store anyone?) are dealt with at a strolling pace. Sometimes this pace of enlightenment is difficult to get right, but as the film wends its way from one well shot scene to another, you realize that you've been sucked in on his mental and physical trip and that you are really enjoying the ride. His journey really ends 15 minutes before the end of running time with a moment of release on the edge of a bottomless abyss (it makes sense in the film, honestly) and as I watched this, I realized that I was smiling a big, deep, warm smile. Films like this don't come along too often and when then do they blind-side you in all the right ways. Excellent acting and direction all round, so get yourself a big cup of tea, some chocolate digestives, then settle back, watch and enjoy!

Don't be tempted by this one as I was. Features the lead guy from Scubs in his writing/directing/leading man feature film debut - it's had universally good reviews, most of them acknowledging the fact he's an outstanding talent on all of these fronts. All of those reviews are wrong - this is a bad film. It's incredibly contrived and very, very corny. It's a John Cusak/Say Anything wannabe. It's everything that's bad in American indie movies. Check out `Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' instead - that's what this film tries but utterly fails to be.

One previous reviewer said that you would enjoy this movie if you were a fan of Scrubs -I disagree - I am a HUGE fan of Scrubs but this movie kind of left me cold. Do we really need another movie about a disaffected 'youth' returning home to face demons? Zach Braff obviously thinks we do. It was really kind of dull and I can't say much more - the only positive thing I can say is that Braff's script is pretty funny in places and that's where his future lies.

i must be dreaming when i see certain reviews saying this is awful. they could not be more wrong and i expect they are simply old men or women who have grown cynical about the chances of be happy in life. well it is a shame. this movie is not overly "oh so deep" or melancholic teenage 'feel sorry for yourself' trash, it is a film where everything is perfect, from the sondtrack to the script and the camera work, the cast is perfect and work perfectly together. if you liked the qwerkyness of Napoleon Dynamite, this will dazzle you. for those idiots who cannot relate to other people's emotions unless they have gone though exactly the same thing, then perhaps yes you should not bother, but for all who love cinema, here is the opportunity to see one of hollywoods rising stars of original movie making.

if you liked scrubs then you will love this. it is 100 times better than the last kiss, which he only acted in. the shins, iron and wine, colin hay, coldplay, nick drake, thievery corporation, all feature on a fantastic soundtrack that perfectly grabs the mood of each scene. and natalie portman is lovely and perfect as always.

this movie is guaranteed to leave you feeling happy and opptimistic, so even if you are a cynic, let yourself go and remember what it was like when you were young and hopeful.

The subject says it all: it's as close to perfect as a slice-of-life movie can come. So if you like those movies that observe the real life of people, where nothing really happens but somehow the story seems to move along, then this is definitely for you. But if you require more of an actual story - with, perhaps, car chases and sex scenes and slapstick comedy - then move on cos this will bore you to tears.

Boring boring boring and totally self indulgent - didn't like this film.

This is probably my favorite film of all time. I know, i know, that's quite the controversial opinion, but i don't particularly care, because I loved it, and continue to love it each time i watch it. Zach Braff is perfect, sad and inspiring, so departed from his witty, comical and somewhat silly 'scrubs' fame, and utterly believable within his character, and Natalie Portman's portrayal of Sam is both touching and charming. I myself fell head first into Braff's world in this film, the realist style completely pulling me in, which combined with a carefully chosen soundtrack, in my eyes at least, makes this the perfect film.

Brilliant film, subtle, witty, great script....though I was surprised to see it in the kids film section, has drug and sex references so if your child is under teen years, not recommended.

When I heard I hadn't seen all of Zach Braff's movies, I was a little devastated as I find him an amazing actor. So of course I logged on and rented this movie. I really enjoyed it, Braff and Portman's performances worked amazingly well together. It is a little awkward to understand what is going on sometimes and you do lose your trail but keep watching, it is worth it!

for me, a bit TOO much

based on random people's recommendation I had bought this - great movie, so funny, so deep etc etc... well, it has a few moments to smile about... yeah.. but what the f' is it about really? a mess-up father-son relationship? there's hints of that... a twenty something find-your-true-self story? the guy's as lost in the end as he was to be begin with... a romance/love-story? well, of sorts, maybe, it beats the typical Hollywood... I watched it about 3 times and still haven't figured it out.... for all I can say the cast is allright and the soundtrack, at times, too.... a movie for a sad and rainy day that you don't want to change anything about... if you however expect to be delighted, don't bother....

This abomination is so self-consciously 'Quirky' is surprising it doesn't come in a triangle shaped box or some similar obviously trite ploy. The underlying story is so hackneyed it’s actually almost refreshing to see it reprised in such a seemingly naive fashion; the generic, cosmetically-designed faces of the leading troupe bulge with bright-eyed wonder at the heretofore untold story they have unlocked. Yet, if anyone is even slightly surprised by the ending or the 'twists and turns' which punctuate the 'journey', they have evidently never read a book, watched a film or seen an episode of Beverly Hills 90210. At times it feels as though Garden State is posed to actually take a turn towards leftfield but some romantic-slush soon suffocates any such potential. Nothing is left unsaid - if you can’t work out the metaphors or euphemisms don’t worry - they will be stripped of any mystic minutes later. It may have been more efficient to run subtitles outlining what each scene, statement and intonation signifies. Compared to genuinely alternative films this is embarrassing - it is contrived and tepid and features what must be the most annoying leading couple in cinematic history. Whoever told 'Zach Braff' he had an interesting face deserves to spend a year locked in a room with this film playing constantly. People who like this film are the type who talk endlessly about their 'crazy' habit of alphabetizing their collection of world cinema DVDs or harp on and on about how untidy their children’s “rumpus room” is. When the film ended I felt guilty for having sniggered a couple of times - the same sense of shame one feels after dressing the family cat. This is truly awful - a crass attempt at alternative cinema but ultimately a resounding reaffirmation of sugar-sweet Hollywood values...

Great indi comedy/drama. Funny and moving too. Zach braff is obviously a lot more than just the funny guy from Scrubs!

Movies like this are rare. Lots worth looking at, lots worth listening to, lots to think about, lots to feel good about.

Zac Braff is one of my favourite comedic actors and I really wanted this film to be good. I was willing it to get better as I watched but it never happened. It was sooooooo slow! The characters weren't developed enough and even Natalie Portman couldn't save this stinker.

I've read so many positive critics on the magazine that I had high expectations for this movie. They all crashed down within the first 10 minutes. Bit pointless, the emotions are kept on hold: funny and surreal moment, but no real laugh; some emotional moment that never managed to really touch my heart. Overall boring, I had to fight to not skip most of the chapters.

Watched this when it was in the cinemas by random selection. We were bemused at first and then settled in to a charming but quirky story about 'ordinary' folk. It's a tale about life and how you should look around you to see the worth of it all. The music is great and sets the overall mood. Don't get this if car chases and explosions are your thing. Otherwise, if you're out for something with a human touch (almost on a par with 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape'), then this is worth a look in.

This film has instantley become one of my favourites. Its amazingly well acted characters, provocative and interesting storyline and all round excellence makes up for slight drags in the plot

Garden State is a decent, quirky rites of passage film with the versatile Natalie Portman once again showing off her range, this time as a kooky pet-burying dreamer. Like most other people who've seen the film, I went out and bought The Shins album 'Oh Inverted World' after seeing this.

This is an amazing writer-directorial debut by Zach, he shows a deeper and much more intelligent side to himself with this film. The camera imagery is perfect and the story is although very simple in context is equaly entertaining in its fresh indie feel. Zach i hope is one for the future, and will bring further hits like this film. He's not just a scrub one hit wonder. But his attack on stereotyping is also quite amusing, a parralell between the film and his life? who knows..

I'd heard this was great, and really wanted to like it - and I did like lots of it. But it's old hat: the young guy with the life crisis prompted by a key event, the wacky mates, the wierd female, and the eclectic soundtrack. Wasn't the Graduate - and a host of films in the 70s - awfully like this? Masybre I just didn't get it. I really like the guy from Scrubs too!.

I am sure that some people will love this. I know a lot of people did, otherwise I wouldn't have listed it. Cohen fans would probably love it - Leonard Cohen, that is. I, however, was looking for something with somewhat more pace, and rather less of the navel-gazing. I confess, I gave up after 20 minutes... Maybe I'll try again in a year or six.

Utter tripe. Braff at his worst. The biggest mistake 'Scrubbs' made was putting him behind the camera. THE DANCING MONKEY SHOULD ONLY BE INFRONT OF IT!

Garden State is a very uncomplicated story that deals with the many various complexities that are ‘intrinsic’ in dysfunctional families. The narrative of the film is also driven by relationship that develops between the two central characters as they help each other come to terms with their individual troubles. The directing style is at times reminiscent of what was stylised in American Beauty and has a sound track to impress upon on anyone.

Sorry, this did not get through to me at all. After 30 minutes, I gave up and turned it off. Maybe one needs more patience? I like to be entertained, and this one failed to grab me.

I just found the whole thing very disappointing: I kept catching glimpses of Braff's 'Scrubs' character in this new role, and also thought that the key story in the film was not explained thoroughly, and also that the ending was very much rushed and was twisted in order to justify what else was happening.

Many of the reviews have said it already but this is a great story which is well executed and has the speech and visual touches that make it memorable. What is quite surprising is just how good the acting is. Zach Braff of 'Scrubs' fame writes, directs and stars in this very personal film and Natalie Portman, Ian Holm and the rest of the cast put together a quite surprising and charming movie. I really did like it and while its not quite 5 stars for me, this is the kind of film we really want to see more of - oh, and a great soundtrack too!

I've been meaning to watch this film for a while and never quite got round to buying it. I must say I was pleasantly surprised by Zach Braff's ability to play a serious role and would highly recommend the film. Fairly slow moving and relaxed humour; similar in style to Lost in Translation/Broken Flowers in mood.

Everyone was very complementary of Zach Braffs talent when it came to the writing and directing of this film and i was expecting a light hearted funny comedy drama! what i got was a depressing, up his own ass, oh aren't i talented load of pompous nothingness! Ok that does sound a bit harsh and to tell you the truth it wasn't THAT bad, but it wasn't THAT good either. Zach Braff plays an actor in LA that comes home because his disabled mother has died, he comes back to a back water town where everyone knows one another and tight knit is an understatement. He meets some old friends, has a few drinks and attends a few parties! his father is a physchiatric doctor and is sure his son needs medical attention and has done throughout his life. During a common visit to the doctors Zack Braff meets a girl, Natalie Portman! This is where the film picks up the slightest of steam! Natalie portman is great, she plays a great character and is instantly likable, if it wasn't for her this film would be poor. There are a couple of funny moments which are extremely clever, but so clever its a case of blink and you will miss them. These and Natalie Portman is not enough to keep the film alive and Zack Braffs character just irritated me throughout!

I was truly blown away by this film, although I have to say it's exaclty the type of film you'd expect from Zach Braff. Just like his sitcom Scrubs, it combines the funny ('Well I thought you were a dick so I guess that's cool.') with touching scenes that really make you empathise with the main characters. Braff shows tremendous talent in his acting and directing skills, although Natalie Portman and Peter Sarsgaad also play their roles very well. Portman does take a little getting used to in the early going, but once she opens up her character becomes a lot more bearable. The funniest scene of the film has to be when Large is floundering about in the pool whilst all the other party guests watch on, and the most moving for me was when Large and Sam are talking in the bath close to the end. The ending seemed alightly rushed, although the use of Frou Frou's 'Let Go' was perfectly used, along with the rest of the grammy award winning soundtrack. Overall, a real piece of art rather than a film, hugley enjoyable and definately something I'd reccomend to a friend.

I must have missed the cult viewing bus, because this one left me cold and disinterested. i could not identify with any of the characters and switched off, so i do not know what happened at the end and could not care less.

Actually, no, it's not. It's really nice to see that Zach Braff is not confind to playing one type of role, his character in this film is so different to his character in Scrubs, yet just as believable. He also wrote and directed this, and hats off to him as it's great. An offbeat kinda film about frienship, life, love, loss and learning to live with yourself, it has heart, story, and lessons, all told throught excellent acting and some extremely well written dialogue. Natalie Portman does a fantastic job as the kooky and weird-but-lovable chick to provide both the comic relief and the love interest for the film. Give the film time to grow on you, though; after viewing you might thinik 'meh, it was ok', but after a while you think back to it and it seems like so much more than it first appeared to be.

It's a case of so near, yet so far. I'm not really sure whether I enjoyed the film. It could have been so great, but lacked something...

Acting is brilliant. Storyline is good but does develop slowly. Beginning is a bit bizarre but stick with it. Liked the ending. Some really good scenes and some potentially 'real-life' characters and issues. Not the sort of film I would usually watch but glad I did.

It is definitely a slightly strange film and wasn't anything that I expected when I watched it, however I did enjoy it. It had its witty and feel good moments that are well written and well thought out. As for what exactly it is about, I'm still not sure. On the face of it, it could just be summed up as a guys visit home where he catches up with friends and meets a girl, but ultimately I think there is more to it than that. Difficult to explain, which is one of the reasons why it's worth watching!

Some parts mmade me cringe, some parts made me laugh and some parts just made me feel sick but I found this movie really enjoyable and it was mellow which was perfect for my mood.

One of the most boring films I have seen for a long time. Gave up after 20 minutes and went to watch paint dry.

After owning the soundtrack for a good couple of years I decided it was time to watch the movie. Now I know I should have stayed with the soundtrack. It might have just been me, but it seems that Zach Braff wanted to create a Kevin Smith film. Simple camera angles and a strong soundtrack may be present but the dialogue is poor, the acting incredibly poor. I would say that this film is the antithesis for any Kevin Smith venture (I know the only connection is Jersey but its the one I'm making). This film is beige, so middle of the road but trying to be edgy that it just grates on you. Give it a go, but don't hope for much.

I loved this film. It has a great story line that is pretty random but it all flows very well and is believable, great actors too, definatley worth watching.

Just wanted to make my first post to recommend the movie ‘Garden State’ to anyone who hasn’t already seen it, I watched it in full last night (I’d seen the first half hour on TV beforehand and stuck it straight on my LoveFilm list when I signed up). Zach Braff writes, directs and stars but does considerably better at the first two of those three than he does at the last. His acting is pretty good throughout but as his character gradually lightens up there is a period where he’s a little too close to his ‘J.D’ persona for me, and in the romantic scenes there are many other male stars that could’ve done better. Natalie Portman is terrific and it’s her performance that shines the most. There are times when she matches the quality of the writing, direction and score to make you think that you’re watching something really special. I really liked it, but then it ticked all of the boxes that I usually go for, so it's an easy four and a half stars from me.

Somebody - stupidly, it turns out - gave Zack Braff enough money to assemble together a group of his *ethnic buddies* for this movie, in which he starred, as well as directed and wrote. The result is an amazingly flaccid piece of inanity which `explores` the relationship (4-days old) between a man and a girl. The girl is Natalie Portman who is too short, too flat and too youthful to be taken seriously as a femme fatale; in fact, at certain times one is distinctly uncomfortable that the film teeters on the edge of paedophilia. There is little in this film to hold the interest, and I would not have finished it had I been watching alone.

This film is vanilla ice-cream. Its neither bad nor does anything really stand out. Zach has used some different techinques with the actual cinematography but the story just seems bland. When it ended I was a little in shock. I thought 'wait a minute, isn't this only just getting started?' but I suppose there wasn't too much they could have done with this story anyway. I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it but if someone asked I'd say 'yeah, its worth a watch'. 3/5 stars

Very slow to get into the story, if you can stick with it past 30 minutes it does improve. Some bits humorous,some abit random. More of a last reserved/sunday afternoon than top of the list type movie

The main high point of this film is the excellent array of characters. Natalie Portman again shows she is wasted in the Star Bores prequels and is definitely the highlight of this movie. The main story revolves around a man with issues dating back to his childhood, returning to his home town for the first time in years, and to make matters worse it is for his mother's funeral. His old pals think he's big-time hollywood because of his one success, and his neuroses are apparant from the off. Once he meets a special girl who cannot stop lying, he realises his issues mostly relate to his father's actions and he really begins to sort himself out. 'Lost in Translation' for a younger generation, but also quite funny as well.

A simple story, well told. A stunning script, witty, touching and amazingly funny in parts. Zach Braff has proven himself as a great writer and an innovative and talented director. If you fancy a film that is funny, romantic and moving then I implore you, stick this on your list as priority one.

I found it a little slow to start with, but when it got into it's flow - I really enjoyed it. It was funny and bitter sweet...and Zach Braff is rather pretty too!!

An original well written film from Zach Braff, the star of the hit US comedy series 'Scrubs'. This film is a must see for anyone who enjoys films that don't follow the standard comedy format, such as 'Lost in Translation' and 'Wonder Boys'. To sum it up, the film is refreshingly original and well worth watching.

The story whilst being based around a sons grieving over his mother death offers some very funny moments. A film to watch at any time. Great entertainment

Quirky ? Refreshing and depressing in equal measures ? A mature take ? Try dull, depressing, pointless and pedestrian (makes English Patient look like a regular riot) instead - this film was doomed from about the 4th scene and didn't once look as if it could entertain in any fashion. I really can't say enough just how bad this was - for anyone who thinks it's going to be similar to an episode of Scrubs (in the same way that Jenifer Aniston's films, for example, are similar to Friends) - W A Y off the mark. Not that this is a bad thing in itself of course - nothing wrong with different. But different does, I'm afraid, need to be watchable. Oh, and finally, for those who don't like their films to use swearing as a punctuation mark - avoid this one like the plague. It suffers from the tired if-we-swear-a-lot-people-will-think-we're-clever syndrome.

This is the best feel good comedy i've ever seen, the premise is quiet a depressing idea but Zach Braff manages to make it shine.

I was plesantly suprised with this movie. Its billed as a comedy and had a dark humour that made me grin. Natalie Portman is fantastic playing a slightly quirky character. Its defo worth a watch and would even consider buying.

Really enjoyed this film, funny, serious and witty.

I could go on about the acting, the camera work, the sad/funny script but why spoil it for others. Basically it's just a great film and cannot recommend it enough (the soundtrack is brill as well).

Garden State is superb from start to finish. The plot is very well written, and it is extremly well filmed. Great soundtrack, I felt it worked very well.

Top quality acting from Zach Braff, who we all know from Scrubs, as well as Natalie Portman and Ian Holm, a very good cast.

Just like the other reviews, I will say that if you liked Lost in Translation, you will like Garden State.

This film is absolutely amazing. It has an awesome soundtrack that I went straight out and bought. It is produced perfectly and is just as beautiful to watch. Portman and Braff work fantastically together, by far my favourite film of the year so far!

Anyone who is a fan of the TV series "Scrubs" will recognise Zach Braff as the slightly dopey doctor in waiting...well, prepared to be pleasantly surprised as he turns in a fantastically restrained performance in this gorgeous little piece of film making. All the cast in fact are great, but then they have a great script to work with. The film is threaded through with a very particular brand of eccentric black humour, interspersed with moments of incredible beauty and poignancy that somehow never cross the line into schmaltz.

Highly recommended - and the soundtrack ain't half bad too!

This film was so crazy and quirky, I thought the film would be funny but it made you look at life in a different view. It makes you believe in love at first sight again.

We weren't expecting much from this film as had just rented it on a whim(also the prospect of seeing Natalie Portman in another guise other than Star Wars was alluring!). But this is a truly good film.

Often bewildering in the seeming randomness of the plot and characterisation, the story weaves some great magic. I'm not a huge fan of Scrubs but Zack is awesome, showing true acting credentials. Portman is great too. Hang in with this one as the pay off is worthwhile.

Great stuff, really enjoyed watching this quirky film, if you loved Braff in Scrubs, you'll love this as it's similar humor, good soundtrack, sweet and funny this one kept me watching

This does for psycho-babble romantic comedy what Shaun of the Dead did for horror rom-com

There are aspects of the humour which are Woody Allenesque in their dead pan seriousness.

The over-sweetness of the romance itself is always being cancelled out by the intelligence of the cinematography and the tastelessness of Largeman's parents and collection of school-friends.

The ariel shot in the swimming pool scene is my favourite of the whole film.

I had heard mixed opinions about this film so I wasn't actually expecting a masterpiece.
It can be a little slow in parts but dont let that put you off because this film is beautiful both visually and emotionaly.


Natalie Portman is as adorable as ever and Zac Braft does a brilliant switch from Scrubbs to 'cult comedy'.

I'd been looking forward to this for some time, but wasn't sure that in my fragile state of mind it would have been appropriate - I shouldn't have worried. It was thought-provoking, inspiring, warm and brought a tear to my eye more than once. As a directorial debut it was stunning, and the performance of Portman in particular was refreshing. And it did give me hope, even if it was tinged with Hollywood sentimentality, that somewhere, somehow, there is a little bit of happiness out there for all of us.

Let me explain, some movies I hate, some I enjoy then forget about like a half eaten bagel. This movie is not one of those. Beautiful, funny, sensitive and heart-warming. I REALLY liked this movie, and I know I'll watch it again and again and get something extra from each viewing. Zach has a special gift for dialogue that is rare in american cinema, I hope this is the start of a long career. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

This film was a little strange however I did find it entertaining, it wasn't the best film ever but was watchable.

This is not a typical Hollywood movie and does not follow the usual Hollywood film layout. This is very different from any usual film that you expect to see and for this reason I highly recommend it. It is funny, realistic and thought provoking. It is criticized for bad acting yet the whole point of this film is to look like it is real and not a film.

Overall it is an interesting and important film to see if you want to see something different.

Directorial debuts are difficult, and few get it right. Considering the director of 'Garden State' also plays the lead role, you could be forgiven for expecting an awkward juxtaposition.

The scene on the plane and filmed above the bed are important to the understanding of Andrew's emotional disposition. However, this is never reiterated. Not enough of life before he returns home is screened to establish this. Is he merely despondent or is his life a medicated stream of catatonic states?

The relationship between Andrew and Sam is carried out brilliantly by both, though Portman's performance is inspired. At first I wasn't convinced by her character.However, that could be over-familiarity with the Hollywood femme role. Portman's is more cute and homely and has an honesty that is charming and relentless. You quickly accept her as a love interest.

The weakest part for me is the end. It comes when you least expect it and the cuts to the other characters carrying on their live's really don't contribute to the plot and seem to be edited to delay the end. Nothing isprominant enough to add commentary to his return nor his departure.

Portman's performance is impeccable and touching. However, Andrew's return diminished this. It seemed contrived and not as originally scripted. The line "So, what do we do?" does not conclude well to what is a promising film. Though with a sequel (?) the ending becomes acceptable.

Despite criticism I really enjoy this film.

This disc was so badly damaged when I got it I couldn’t watch it. This is the second time this has happened. No I didn’t get a refund the first time either. Also, who is the mystery person writing reviews for me? According to my account I have reviewed dozens of films, and yet this is my first review. Strange.

I suppose films are a bit like music - it's all subjective and what one person will love, another will hate. However, I feel compelled to say that this film is an amazing and beautiful piece of work. Absolutely, touchingly genius. It made me laugh out loud, and cry also. This must be the unspoken classic of this year.

This film is not your run of the mill romantic comedy. If you like quirky slighty unhinged characters this is for you.

This is a charming independent US movie. It turned out I'd seen it on a plane 9 months earlier, but it held my interest and attention throughout the second viewing. A quircky tale of growing up - coming to terms with life and commitment - for a young man. Not a masterpiece but with some real talent

Ok; perhaps you have gone too far to liken this to the work of Hal Ashby. Whilst there are witty, touching scenes, the stench of cliche, lack of subtlety and the most forced metaphor ever committed to film make this at best a reasonably good film. Natalie Portan is absolutely stunning throughout, but only serves to provide another cinematic cliche. Rent Punch-Drunk Love to see how similar themes can be handled with originality and a light touch.

I hated this film. it thought it was so knowing and funny but it was just embarrassing. I hated the way that the director tried to lump in a few of his favourite songs onto the soundtrack in a very clumsy way.In particular the scene when zach braf first meets natalie portman in the doctors surgery and she plays him a track on her headphones by 'the shins'.It had no bearing on the story and there was no other reason for it other than to show how much he liked the song. I hated every character in the film and just felt the whole film was trying to hard to be quirky and trendy. It has been compared to Donnie Darko - don't make me laugh

The shining independent seems to be rising with such hits as Station Agent and Pieces of April, this too is equally brilliant. With its strange set of characters brilliantly acted and the off beat pacing of the film throws the film far ahead of the big budget films and dramas of recent memory. Braff writes, directs and stars magnificently in this tale of a man goes home after a nine year absence. Skaarsgard is excellent again as the friend who stayed behind and Portman truly shines as the girl who has a big heart. It is wonderfully shot and there is not one thing amiss. Beautiful, quirky and one to see.

Exploring love through a haze of alcohol, ecstasy, lithium and dysfunctional families, this is Casablanca for the chemical generation.

Strongly recommended when you need a smile. Also it’s probably the only film in history where a love affair has been started by an over amorous guide dog!

As a serial 'Scrubs' viewer, it was weird at first to watch Zach Braff without the usual voiceover telling us exactly what he's thinking. I actually had to trust his acting and read his expressions!

But, I did enjoy the movie once I got into it, even going so far as to purchase the excellent soundtrack, which now makes me want to watch Garden State all over again!

Although never having never watched Scrubbs, I am amazed that an actor from it (Zach Braff) has written, performed and directed such a great movie.

The acting is first class, the narration is refreshingly original. The plotline is indeed quirky with comedy elements.

Personally I thought it was great and would urge everyone to see it, if not to be able to deliberate over the love it/hate it divide it seems to have created.

As an avid fan of Scrubs, I rented this film purely due to the reason that Zach Braff was behind it. Although I didn't expect Scrubs like humour, I was left a little disappointed. The film had some great bits, but I thought it dragged a lot and the ending wasn't up to too much. I'm not saying the film was rubbish, and it is still quite an achievement, however I'm glad I didn't pay the money to go to the cinema for it. Oh well, back to Scrubs.

It is a somewhat comical love story set against your average oh-so-depressing (and depressed) surban back-drop but it has some good twists.

This film is gorgeous! I loved every second, it's so fresh, subtle and honest. The soundtrack is fab too, when a film starts wth Coldplay you know you're in for a treat! Whoever thought the guy from Scrubs was so damn clever? I think it's on the same par with Lost in Translation (though not even Garden State measures up to that), but if you enjoyed that, this you will love.

Garden State is the directorial debut of 30 year old Zach Braff, he also stars in the movie as Andrew Largeman who returns to his hometown for the funeral of his mother.Here he hangs out with old friends, tries to repair his realtionship with his bitter Father and meets the free spirited Sam (a superb performance from the charismatic Natalie Portman).


My hope's for this movie were high from the critical acclaim heaped upon it and for once it was fully justified.A quite wonderfull film with so many great moments (the scan scene was a classic joke I can relate to) above all though, it was a film in which you cared so much about the principle characters, the final 5 minutes are heart-achingly beautiful.

Wonderfull performances, great dialogue (I loved the carbon-monoxide 'gag') and a truely memorable film, easily one of the most enjoyable films I have viewed for some time.

It's a stange kinda of romcom style film but without the comedy. Thought it had potential but didn't really go anywhere.

I was expecting something different to be honest but it turns out to be a quirky and interesting view on life from two people who probably have a fairly mixed up view on things. It is very human and extremely encouraging to see beautiful things happening to people who need a break.

It started off so well. A wee bit of Coldplay and some beautiful opening shots to set the film up but after the first 5 minutes keeping my eyes and ears open became a chore. If you like the pace of Eyes Wide Shut then this is the film for you however by the end I was tearful for all the wrong reasons. A disappointing mishap on the cv of all those involved.

This film is everything Lost in Translation wanted to be. Beautiful characters and a sensitive well observed plot. It restored my faith in film.

A few amusing bits, but not a hugely funny film. Would have been better with tighter editing, if you watch the deleted scenes some of the bits cut out would have added to your understanding while watching the film. I thought the film markedly improved in the last 15 minutes which just goes to show you can't please everyone. And Natalie Portman's character just set my teeth on edge - the sort of cutesy moppett you feel an overwhelming urge to slap - Kate Winslet did kooky SO much better in Eternal Sunshine without making you want her to fall off a cliff. Ian Holm was miscast and wasted in this film and has very little screentime - his big scene was cut. Large and his friends were generally well acted, especially Mark, but they weren't especially sympathetic characters - I didn't really care what happened to any of them by the end of the film. So, rent it if you've got an evening to fill, its watchable, but not exciting.

This film was really slow to start with & a bit strange, but it was one of those films you had to watch to see what happens & it turned out ok.

I LOVED this film. It completely took me by surprise. I had never heard of
Zach Braff before although know and trust Natalie Portmans always excellent performances. Slow start. Builds up beautifully. Chemistry amazing - they should be together!

For some reason I thought that this would be a bit of a chick flick and in a way it was - but with a definate sci-fi background - it was just not what I expected.

Having said that I did find the film enjoyable, although a little far fetched!

This is really a one idea movie that stretches far too long, it takes two of the least interesting characters from Clerks and takes them a journey to Hollywood. There are some clever in-jokes and some self parodyby Kevin Smith, but a movie this does not make. Watch Clerks several times instead, it is much much funnier. You get to see Eliza Dushka in a leather cat suit though.

Garden State is total f*cking toilet... Morose, maudlin, mopey, monotonous, slush in which that usually likeable chap from scrubs stares at you desperately through the screen with wet, bloodshot, eyes, and Natalie Portman bounces around inanely like a retarded harpy on too many e-numbers, whilst coldplay croon forlornly in the background and you find yourself reaching for the sharp knives. I had been hoping for quality tweenaged angst, all I got was a nasty queasy feeling. Avoid. my companions were deeply relieved when i put on hellboy instead.

“Look at me, look at how quirky I am! QUIRKY!!” is pretty much all Braff wants to say in this glossy, but occasionally satisfying comedy, which tries so hard to be eccentric and original that it comes off a superficial ego-trip.

Why would someone have a grave-yard of hamsters? Why would anyone build a house in a decrepit boat next to an enormous canyon? Of course, Braff, who gives a performance that’s about as emotionally complex as a rubber duck, has the odd nice touch, but the only real reason to see the film is Portman, who transcends her image of ‘that person in Star Wars’ with warmth and wit.

Garden State probably won't appeal to 50-something sorts who wish men were still men and hanging was still the destiny promised to murderers, petty thieves and the blasphemous. It's a look at that universal, 20-something realisation that the world is not all it was once cracked up to be, and is romantic, whimsical, ridiculous and amusing in all the right proportions. Zach Braff carries his excellent efforts from Scrubs onto the big screen, writing, directing and playing lead male, Large, with encouraging panache. Natalie Portman returns to her exhilerating best as love interest Sam.

There are moments where Braff has succumbed to the lure of a Hollywood moment, but by and large he remains true to the disappointment and cynicism he's trying to talk about. It's already, no doubt, become a "life-changing" experience for thousands of under-30s.

This is the sort of film you can easily watch if you have nothing else to do. OK story, not too much happens, but worth watching.

Self indulgent autobiographical tedium

Still wondering what on earth possessed me to rent this film. Anyway it's as bad as the reviews had already told me, worse even if I'm being frank. Recycled plot elements from Bridget Jones/4 Weddings etc. The Richard Curtis sanitised London.. and so on. Dreadful cameos from John McEnroe and so on and two main actors who seemed embarassed to be involved. In fact I'm still wondering what on earth Kirsten Dunst was thinking when she signed on the dotted line for this one. It's not like she needed the money.

Totally weird and quite difficult to watch. Really dissapointed with Adam Sandler in this movie.

Although it seemed promising at the start this film snowballed rapidly. The characters were just too unreal to be taken seriously. Many other reviews stated that this was a beautiful film, I cannot understand why, it was middle american whining about things that have been gone over a thousand times before. I watched this film with 2 other people, one of whom fell asleep, the other decided to read a book after 25 minutes. I expected this film to be original and groundbreaking as so many of the reviews had suggested but it's lack of subtlety and originality was painful. Think of a 5th rate Woody Allen film. I really can't describe how painful, meaningless and immature this film was. Natalie Portman was totally wasted.

Zach Braff should do what he does best; Average American sit-coms wrote by someone else.

Or is it? These days 'quirky' is a genre all of its own, 'convention busting' is a convention in itself, and 'surprising' has become a technique so ingrained in a particular kind of film that you're only surprised if you're not surprised! The tone and feel of this film, not to mention the characterisation and humour seem to owe much (as another review indicates) to Hal Ashby. There's a lot of Harold in the central character and a lot of Maude elsewhere. Which is no bad thing, of course, if it's done well. Which it is. There is enough sincerity and meaning to the story to carry it off with style. It has a little stagger with the introduction of the Natalie Portman character, where you get the sense that they were really trying too hard, also that the writer-director didn't quite connect with or understand what he wanted from her. So she arrives as an irritating over-quirked mad-cap that just for a moment threatens to break the audience-complicity that a film like this depends on in order to work well. Ian Holm didn't have much to do but was so right for the part and the film that he established himself as one of its most memorable aspects. Nice work if you can get it. In spite of its occasional wobbles and, perhaps, its slightly self-indulgent excesses, this is a good effort from a first-time director whose talent shines through.

This was one of the dull, most boring films I have ever had to endure (only slightly more watchable than than the Hours which I watched the week before).

The pretentious nonsense runs free throughout it's total lack of inspiration or direction.

The characters are mildly annoying but never raising enough passion or emotionto actually really make you care about them either way.

The twirling in the rain scene made me want to get on lithium as soon as I possibly could to avoid turning into the zany Scrubber Main Character.
