Man On Fire  (2004)

As usual with Denzel Washington, you get an engaging story (certainly by action film standards, anyway).

This is not as good as the gripping and thrilling Fallen, my favourite Denzel Washington movie, but it is still well worth watching - assuming violence doesn't put you off. There is a lot of violence, mostly implied and out of shot, but some of it is not left to the imagination. Given the subject matter (a washed up (ex-special forces) body guard working in Mexico City whose charge - a little girl - is kidnapped) I think the violence was inevitable.

The film was perhaps a touch long, which slowed the pace, and occasionally lapses into sentimentality, with one or two aspects to the story which lack credibility, or I would have given it five stars.

Definitely a must see, though.

Man on Fire wasn't that well received when it came out, it was criticised for being over-stylish and reviewers felt this got in the way of the plot.

Well, yes the film is very stylish, anyone familiar with Tony Scott previous films, i.e. Enemy of the State will know what to expect, (lots of colour filters, interesting camera work, edgy cuts), and he really has gone for it with Man on Fire, with mixed results.

Washington as normal is top class and Walken does his effortless scene stealing act. One of the best performances of the film is from Dakota Fanning, who in my opinion is one of the best child actors of recent times and a future big star.

On the whole the story/plot is engrossing and entertaining and the action is fantastic, even if it is sometimes a bit hard to swallow. A small criticism is Scott’s arty techniques which distract you in some of the important scenes.

If you like your action films to have edge and be a little bit different then I very much recommend this film!

This, on the face of it, is just another 'Man Alone' revenge movie. But don't be put off, there's far more to this than the cover blurb suggest. The chemistry between the two leads and the sensitive and controlled acting of Denzel Washington make this a far more satisfying film than the usual Hollywood Actioner. Yes, there are enough bullets, bombs and violence to keep the most ardent action fan happy but the under-current is a far more subtle tale of trust, 'love' and the redemption of a lost soul. Watch it, it's worth the effort.

You simply have to watch this film, it is excellent. A Hitman "troubled" that drinks allot, is hired to protect a young girl (she teaches him to care again). She gets kidknapped and he turns back to the deadly killer that he was to seek her revenge. I know it sounds cheesy but honestly its excellent. It has a really good feel to it, very upbeat.

It is violent, but i hate really gorey films. This is incredibly well done. You feel for the characters. Denzel is amazing but the star really is the young girl. THIS FILM IS NOT TO BE MISSED. I WOULD SAY THE BEST IVE WATCHED ALL YEAR.

I thought this was a great action/thriller,it was full of pace and action.Very violant in places a must see for denziel fans

Another engaging performance by Denzel Washington, as a man with a violent past (although we never find out much about it, and that adds to the complexity of his character).

Employed as the babysitter to a young girl in Mexico, Washington goes on a revenge hunt when his charge is kidnapped. The violence exacted is exaggerated by the calm and professional manner in which it is committed. Good cast (great cameo from Christopher Walken) and plenty of plot twists.

Well worth a look.

Extremely pleasantly suprised to enjoy this film. I'm not a huge fan of Tony Scott, but his directing in this film was superb. The soundtrack was great and all the leading actors pulled off some impressive performances. The story was the weakest point as I felt it offered nothing original but very few films these days can claim to have new ideas. If you like films like 'Dead Man's Shoes' or 'Falling Down', then this film may be for you.

There's no doubting Denzil Washington deserves more than the one Academy Award that he's received. This performance was more worthy than Training Day.

Certainly one of the finest movies I have seen for quite some time. Exquisite direction and flawless acting make this a very entertaining and often moving film. Denzel Washington plays one of his most engaging and emotional roles to date, and the rest of the cast perform beautifully. Christopher Walken is of course superb in his part although he did not appear as often as I would have liked. A story of ultimate greed that backfires is offset against a childs innocence and love. This is also a film for action movie lovers as it has its fair share of bullets, rockets and revenge. The location of Mexico City adds a feel of seediness and corruption which in itself is an eye opener. All in all, a truly gripping film from beginning to end. Highly recommended!

Ya can't go wrong with Denzel. Stunningly entertaining film, the first hour gets you to know and understand the characters (Dakota Fanning is a great little actress) the second part sees Denzels character turn into a right nasty avenging angel.

Not gonna say no more but sit back and enjoy a quality director, quality stars, starring in a quality film.

Slick, proficiently made but nasty and cynical. Just because Denzel gives it a gravitas it doesn't deserve does not make it any different from Aaahnold in Commando or the McBain movies in The Simpsons.

Using the death of a child to give legitamacy to a rampage of violence seems morally dubious at best. No one seems to question the morality of torture and inserting explosives into peoples rectums. I mean what kind of US Special Ops would do that, one only has to look at Iraq to see that oh.... On 2nd thoughts maybe this is an insightful documentary into US foreign policy.

Tony Scott directs with his usual anything Ridley can do I can do louder and with more orange filters, and suffers from that I'll cut every 1/2 a second style of filmmaking so half the time you are either confused or about to spin into an epileptic fit. And sticking the subtitles all over the screen doesn't make you Peter Greenaway. One wonders what the lesser known Scott brother Terry would have made of the script.

Best bit for me was right at the end after 2.5hrs of trashing Mexico making it look like a hell on earth lawless and corrupt country. The film thanks the wonderful people and country of Mexico.

One word dumb, another word fun.

Fantastic movie. Denzel gave a fantastic performance as an alcoholic bodyguard who is hired to protect a young girl (Dakota Fanning) who also performs brilliantly. However she is kidknapped whilst in his care and the movie follows his plight as he is determined to kill each and every person responible. Not just a revenge movie, but a very engaging journey following Creasy's (Denzel's) emotional turmoil and love for the lost girl. Absolutely Brilliant watching.

Good acting performances, but distinctly average plot, boring and somewhat cringing first 50 minutes, but what really spoils it is the truly dreadful way it's shot.

I didn't expect this at all. Nothing like the trailer leads you to expect. Or maybe that's just me but I thought it was ace. Denzel is really good, he's a bit like he always is but he's really good at it. The little girl from War of the Worlds does a nice job of being sweet. But if I'm honest the best thing is the violence. Its on a par with Resevoir Dogs in places, harsh, but good. Even my boyfriend liked it and he's pretty hard to please I can tell you. Stick it on your list. You won't regret it, if you do I accept no responsibility.

Denzel Washington is superb in this film. In my opinion a better personal performance from him than in Training Day. Walken and Fanning (who plays the young girl) are also particularly good. This is a much deeper film than the trailers for it suggested which was a Die Hard style action clone. Washington's character plays the part of an ex-military bodyguard who has essentially lost his soul and turned to drink. He is redeemed by his new relationship with the young girl he's hired to protect who is then kidnapped, turning him back into his old self for his mission of revenge. I know its sounds like a cheesey plot but the excellent acting really carries the film and the setting of Mexico City is perfect. The build up to the action is all very subtle, allowing for character building before the bullets start to fly.

This film was brilliant to watch, from start to finish - well recommended

This is a top-notch, brutal Hollywood thriller that seems to hark back to an age where intelligent, violent, adult cinema was still considered mainstream (as opposed to the diluted anodyne kiddie-pap that constitues a major part of the studios output). It works well by building up slowly and establishing the relationship between the burnt-out Washington and his child charge, which for once is genuinely touching rather than sickly, before eventually cutting loose with the violence. As good as Washington, Fanning and the ensemble are the real star of the show is director Tony Scott, who goes all out on maximum overdrive (and it's not as though his previous films were subtle) in an avalanche of fast cutting, high-contrast photography (that looks heavily influenced by the also Rio-set 'City of God'), hand-held camerawork and subtitles that almost explode across the screen, to propel the pulpy, gory story along at a high-octane level. Like the main character, his art is violence and he's painting his masterpiece here. This is a must-see for action and thriller fans.

Wasnt that fussed about this really. Little bit disappointed. Denzel is very good but there are some cheesy moments which ruin the action. He does alot to get revenge on a kid he hasnt known for very long.

Once again Mr Washington show the rest how its done.Based on a true story set in Mexico City about an ex agent turned Bodyguard and the spate of kidnappings mixed with one mans friendship with a little girl he didnt want to get close too. It unravels the story with elegance and downright vigelanticism.A must see movie of 2004...ENJOY

Best film I have seen in a long time. Had me hooked all the way through. Action packed and brutal, but with a soft side. The little girl is a great actress, along with Denzel (of course). Rent it!

Action and a twist - kept us glued all the way!

Absolutely brilliant. Engaging throughout. A strong convincing cast, led admirably by Washington who shines throughout. Dakota Fanning gives a touching performance as Pita, a star in the making. The direction is powerful and at times beautiful. This is more than an action thriller.

A real must for Denzil fans. You really feel for his character and want him to kill everybody!!!! One of the best films i've seen in years.

Although this film was well filmed and quite atmospheric, it was long, violent, gory and a bit boring.

This film has a strong cast and the first hour or so sets things up really well.... However the latter half is basically the hero torturing and murdering his way through untold numbers of nameless people, with a twist at the end so obvious you see it a mile off. Christopher Walken gets in a few good one-liners but apart from that this was disappointing and depressing

Not a must see movie

Denzel Washington is fantastic in this film, on a parallel with his role in Training Day, but is a quieter, more sinister character. There are so many twists in the film, I don't want to say much, all I can say is: Rent it.

A most enjoyable film with a good story line, superb acting and plenty of accptable action.... This is a great film on fire...

Underated, but some very good performances. Washington is excellent as the burnt out agent. Shame Rouke not used, not very good and after once upton a time mexico it appears he is just becoming a bit actor The plot moves along at a fairly predictable speed until Washington has to go into action. Nice action, some moment made me shudder with what the persepted pain would be. However not in an over the way, ie Arnie film, just controlled.

Didn't really know what this film was all about before I rented it but it turned out to be a cracker of a movie. The film plot is excellent and really well thought out and is only complemented by the acting skills of Oscar winner (not for this film), Denzel Washington. Accompanied by the realistic film-photography and gladiator-esk music (same composer i think), this film is a must for all movie-goers.

Don't know if I'm a closet sadist but thoroughly enjoyed the bloody revenge Denzel administers, shot from some very clever camera angles and using subtitles with unusual but telling effect. Watch this and enjoy the feeling of revenge!

Me included. It's not a great film, and too much time is spent on the preamble, as if you watch this type of fare you're probably after guns and explosions. There's a disappointing shortage of both in the film, as it seems to almost skip over the fun parts. The kid steals the show, and seemed to be the only competent actor among the cast. She was the probably the only really good thing in it.

The drama was strained, the dialogue was inept, the violence was late to start and quick to finish. All in all, it was more of a time-waster than something you could really get involved in. Not truly bad, but not great either.

Brilliant film from the start, it could have easily gone off the rails and taken the usual route of the drink problem etc but no it was a great film with outstanding acting, but not for the faint hearted, best film I have seen in ages

Remorseful former mercenary-turned-bodyguard Denzel Washington is hired by a wealthy family to protect their 10-year-old daughter from kidnappings. Unfortunately for everybody concerned in this film - she is kidnapped while under his watch, Denzel then begins a blood bath of vengeance to try to punish those responsible and free her at the same time. Rent it it's really good. 4 Stars.

I almost didn't bother with this film as it sounded a bit cheesy but I'm glad I did. This is a cracking film and I was gripped from beginning to end. The only gripe I have is that they should have used the alternate ending rather than the one they did, but that's just a minor thing. Highly recommend.

This film was brilliant. It shows the underside to mexico and one mans devotion to trying to get justice for the little girl he's grew fond of. Its touching, Denzel Washington is fab, as usual! It also has a dark element to Washingtons character. Tearjerking end. Must watch.

Really good movie, not what you would expect from a top Hollywood star, highly recommend this movie, it is fast paced & very well made. I really liked it.

This started off promisingly but after the girl is kidnapped it descends into a violent mess. The director's constant jerky camera work and 'stylistic' flourishes just become annoying and headache-inducing. Washington's character somehow avoids breaking into a sweat or attracting any attention from police or passers-by as he carries out his revenge. I found myself laughing at some of the action scenes they were so ridiculous. By the end I didn't really care about the fate of any of the characters and just wanted the 2.5 hours of my life back that I wasted on this film. The only redeeming feature was Christopher Walken.

No story, but lots of action. Completely unbelievable, switch your brain off to watch.

does not light my fire

Love Denzel Washington but DID NOT love this film. Not one I would give a high recommendation to, do yourself a favour and only have this if there is nothing else!

3 stars for Mr Washington, but 1 star for the movie. Very very slow to interest, a snail could move faster. The ending was good, but this quite long film could have been edited down to about 1hr 30min easy, and nothing much missed. If you go into the extras bit on the DVDs the film has an another ending, which surprize surprize was better than the one that was actually in the main film. Watch if you want that all i can say.

Hate to leave such a short review, but this film doesn't really need much of a review as there's so little to it. Denzel seems to fall head over heels for the little girl he's protecting, she gets kidnapped, he goes mental and kills everyone to get her back. Very nicely shot and atmospheric but the storyline just can't justify the budget. Can't help but wonder what Christopher Walken saw in the script that made him go for the role of Denzel's mentor.

they dont get much better than this

This movie is about the wealthy trying to protect their family from kidnappers in Mexico. The director has tried to show us a glimpse of whats happening in Mexico, the corruption and how private american owned bodyguard company's are making a fortune out of kidnapping. In my opinion it could have been much better, the movie starts too slow and ends to soon, the cast are brilliant but the story lacks depth.

Why he is on fire I couldn't quite work out. The story is good and the revenge aspect understood. The filming is somewhat odd at times and it is hard to really get close to the characters and feel any empathy. Fair action film but not one to write home about

A fab film watch this. Denzel plays a bodyguard of a little girl in Mexico(kidnap capital) A warm friendship developes between the two, and when she is kidnapped and the randsom drop goes wrong all hells let loose. A very well acted and scripted film I warmed to Denzels hard faced no nonsence character and willed on his demonic retribution. Fast paced, gripping, stylish to the end.

Denzil Washington, Christopher Walken, Mickey Rourke and Tony Scott sound like a magic combination. And Washington and Walken do their best with slim material although a laughable miscasting of Mickey Rourke as the family's shyster lawyer doesn't do him or the film any favours. But none can escape the basic problems that the plot is desperately thin and predictable, and Scott's direction tediously tricksy. Washington is an ex-special-ops-type who's hit the skids and the booze. Walken, his friend and former colleague, gets him the job of bodyguard to the daughter of some Mexico City glitterati. Washington and the little girl bond, she is kidnapped and Washington hunts down the bad guys. The second half of the film could have taken off if only Scott had upped the pace and laid off the instrusive direction. As it is though, the film is just too thin, too long and too slow to really sparkle.

Enjoyed this much more than I expected. Usually find child actors nauseous but Dakota Fanning is engaging. Was waiting for the 'good cop' & his journalist girlfriend to turn out to be bad guys. How nice that they weren't. And how great to see Christopher Walken play a friend with no sides other than a friend. Really like the deleted scenes, though must agree with the final cut. Fab film. Would highly recommend if you don't mind a bit of violence.

The first hour is incredibly slow and dull. Better films would be building up the characters, this just tries to confuse. Next hour is unpleasantly violent in a similar manner to Reservoir Dogs. The writer has just dreamed up nasty ways to kill people. After all that, you get a contrived, silly ending that feels like it came from a focus group.

Denzel Washington turns in an acceptable performance in this medium paced movie. The plot twists are unsurprising and the temptation must have been there to turn this into a Rambo-esque rampage, but Washington's depiction of an assassin who has no qualms about achieving his goals is chillingly believable. Everything else about this movie is solid, but not gripping and it's very much the sort of movie you'd be happy to watch on a rainy Saturday evening with a few beers and some nibbles.

Very disappointed with this film. After reading the reviews I was expecting someting really good but I thought it was very poor. The film itself was way too long and very predictable. The acting was great but the plot was not!

A touch of predictablity from the good old USA. Body guard looking after girl, hates kids but then takes a shine too her and goes out all guns blazing when she is kidnapped. The little girl was quite a good little actress. Worth a watch.

Let me see...... Grumpy man goes to do job he doesn't want to do but he has to do it cos he needs the work... OK fairly common premice there. He falls in love (it's a kid so it is not THAT kind of love) with his employer... Still pretty similar.... In fact the whole film is a build up of storyline cliches that would have graced an Arnie film of the 80s. Directed well by Tony Scott but so let down by the subject matter.

I felt the same way about Man On Fire as I did about Collateral. Despite the efforts of a great cast the film is dominated by cinematography and editing. Style at the expense of storytelling.

Yes the film looks amazing with washed out colours and all manner of camera angles and has a very inventive use of subtitles which does add to the dramatic tension. After an intriging opening hour when I really did care for the film's main protagonists (Washington as a washed-up former CIA agent turned bodyguard and Dakota Fanning as the precocious child he has to protect) it loses its way. Ultimately becoming an overlong set of action sequences without further character development to provide a proper context for the violence.

Let me start by saying DAKOTA FANNING WOW!!!!!!!!!!! what a future this child has in Hollywood, her acting in this movie is faultless. DW delivered too, but the script & cinema-photography (too many flash shots) let this movie down a lot. Not a movie to rush out and purchase, watch only if bored.

I recommend the novel of Man on Fire by AJ Quinnell (actually a pseudonym), which is set in Italy against the mafia. The original story has a greater sense of the main characters’ backgrounds, and is a marked improvement over this adaptation, even if it’s quite enjoyable in it’s own right. Familiar plotline to begin with - washed up ex-special forces soldier slowly drinking himself to death. He takes on a job to protect a young girl who slowly worms her way into his heart. The action really starts with the consequences of her kidnapping and for those of you with weaker stomachs I'd advise looking away. Wasn't sure I needed to see some of the things that happened and felt his method of revenge was somewhat extreme. Denzel is good at these tortured characters and felt the other characters were well cast and acted. They spent a lot of time building up and then seemed to cram all the action into the small portion of the film remaining. A bittersweet ending but well worth a watch.

This is a bit of a slow starter. I think the director must have been experimenting as some of the camera angles are strange at times. However having said that I did shed a tear at the end of the film as it has quite a moving story. Rent this is you can't find anything else to watch.

An enjoyable evening's watching, mainly thanks to Denzel Washington who is always good.

Good film - but some warnings, I didn't like the exreme violence which was the last third/quarter of the film. By then I was so hooked, I had to see the outcome. Can't say it was a feel good movie, made me cry ( sorry to have to admit that, but no nightmares either!!)

Films based on true stories are always worth watching, if only to see how they are portrayed, and good old D.W. plays another great part here, along with Christopher Walken who is one of the most underated actors of our time for me. The film is a bit stereotypical regarding the plot, but it's execution and delivery are what makes this film a bit more engrossing than the norm. Well worth watching.

With a cast such as Denzel Washington & Dakota Fanning, this one is definatley a must see!!!! Shows action and lots of emotion. Trust me just see it!!!!

Had high hopes for this one, but unfortunately, can only rate it an average thriller. An intelligent script. Good performances all round - Denzel's great (as usual), Christopher Walken is excellent (again, as usual), and young Dakota Fanning will have an Oscar by the time she's a teenager. So what went wrong? Well, a few things, but to keep this short, I'll just point the waggly finger at one or two possible reasons. Firstly, the downbeat ending - I know what Director Tony Scott's trying to say here, and bravo, but this just won't sit right with viewers brought up with divine retribution in the styles of Arnie, Sly, and Bruce. Secondly, the 'violence'. Pretty much all implied - very little gets into frame, so don't go expecting some Tarantino bloodbath. More violence at a teletubbies picnic. Last, but not least, the 'heightened reality' editing! It's overused so much here, that by the end of the film you're gonna need a whole box of Panadol Extra! I found myself just wishing for a still frame - just to give my eyes a rest. Think the second half of the movie was filmed entirely on Super8 and spliced together with duct tape and bubblegum by David Blunkett. So, average kidnap thriller spoilt by some of the most irritating camerawork / editing in movie history. Region 1 extras limited to a few trailers and two lacklustre commentaries. Expect R2 will have the same.

A high quality film, with superb acting as usual by Denzel Washington. Christopher Walken is however very much on auto pilot (as usual these days), but Dakota Fanning is a revelation. The story is very dark by normal movie standards, and makes for very slow viewing in the first hour. Stick with it though, because this is required to make you care for the characters and helps explain the subsequent actions of a 'man on fire'. Make your own mind up about the ending - I felt it was downbeat, but also appropriate.

In short, this film is absolutely superb and i rate it as highly as somewhere in my top 5 films of all time!! A big statement i know but being a Denzel fan i feel fully justified. If you are thinking of renting a dvd rent this without fail!!

if you miss this you are missing one of the best films you will ever see. i was completely hooked thoughtout the film, ignore the other reviews saying it was dissappointing, its brilliant, sad in parts but amazing, watch it!!

Based on a true story; a little slow at the beginning, but justifiably so, and by the end, you're staggered. Well done!

Takes a while to get going. Surprised at Denzel Washington taking on this roll. Dakota Fanning plays the protected child very well. Violent. Don't like the way the film was shot - flash of images throughout the film

Had me gripped the whole way through the film and must admit did bring me to tears in places, a film that must be watched.

I have waited to see this film and I was not disappointed. This is Denzel Washington at his best. It seems to start slow and seems a bit wet. But don't be taken in. Once the action starts then it really livens up. With many twists and turns you are never sure who the good guys are. Although quite violent it is not graphic so it does not spoil the suspense. The final scenes without doubt are the best. A bit of a tearjerker. Don't miss this one.

Quality action with a compelling storyline that keeps you watching with quality acting from Denzil Washington and the little girl, Dakota, creating an engaging relationship that builds between the two. Definately worth watching and I would advise you put this one to the top of your list.

Great acting by Washington - infinitely better than Training Day in my opinion (though I know some may disagree or think that a hard task). Edge of the seat stuff in parts and great action towards the end when the washed up assassin goes on his revenge driven rampage!!!

A film that from the start promises to get better and it does it is just a shame it took a long time to get there. You fight with Creasy's demons all through the film, it is superbly acted and the end was worth the wait, rent it now.

This is one of the best films that I have seen in a long time and I think everybody should see this. The acting is superb and the story line is excellent. More films like this Messers Washington, Walken and Scott.

great film - really enjoyed watcing even though it was a little cheesy

what a film starts off at just the right pace, giving you chance to get to know the central characters.You are then lost in the film for the last hour losing track of time as denzel makes you really feel for his character and how he has become part of the little girls life.Cannot recommend this film enough.

This film is absolutely fantastic. One of Denzel Washingtons best roles yet!! Didn't know what to expect with Washington playing an assassin, but he pulls it off brilliantly. Some of the violent scenes are not for the faint hearted but keeping in line for what the film requires. Long film but keeps you glued to your seat wanting to know what happens next. And you will be surprised!!!

I haven't watched a bad Denzel film and this is one of his best. Add in Dakota Fanning, who has a huge future ahead of her, and you have the making of an excellent film. The story was good, not your usual run of the mill kidnapping story and although violent at times it was not gratuitous. The only negatives for me was that it was a little drawn out and the camera work was too 'choppy'. Highly recommended though as the acting was fantastic.

This movie had good action with Denzel Washington playing the seemingly unemotional assasin, we did however work the plot out after the kidnapping so no great surprise there but worth watching.

When this movie started, I fidgeted a lot. But then denzel got into the character and the movie took off! So my recommendation is stick with it, you will enjoy!!

This was an extremely well crafted film. The direction is unusual but engaging. The acting was superb! I thought about halfway through that the violence was going to be too much, but it is handled carefully with no glorification. Grit your teeth and watch on - its worth it.

The start of this film was slightly slow, but keep on watching as it gets a lot better and i even shed a tear at the end of the film.

get it if you havent seen it . it is well worth a watch great acting and great story not the best movie of all time but a very enjoyable wet friday night in.

Maybe the best film Denzel Washington has ever made.

DW plays the role of a bg who becomes more human due to a little girl he has to protect. Well played and directed but too bloody for me, I surprised myseld several times by swearing aloud on what people can do to each other at least the movie has a good ending.......

This reminded me of another flick directed by Tony Scott called 'Revenge' starring Kevin Costner. Very slick acting by Denzel and THE Christopher Walken. The twists and turns are interesting. The ending is a little limp. Take my advice and watch the alternate ending in the DVD Special Features section. If they would have gone for the alternate ending in the final cut the film would have been a 10 out of 10!

This is a fantastic film - one of the best for a very, very long time. The director has used very clever angles, and lets your mind fill in the finer details only. Only one part unrealistic, but all films seem to be in this one respect (won?t expand cause it might spoil the film :) ). Good action film that twists and turns, up there with Grosse Point Blank (but NOT a comedy), Ransom and Leon. Not one for the children or those of a nervous disposition - BUT for everyone else DON'T MISS IT!!

This was the best revenge flick I have seen, good characters, great script and loved the 'arty' film style and production. Good soundtrack with some nice effects. Thought the young Dakota Fanning was amazing, this could have turned into a ball of American slush but it didn't I'm glad to say. Top film!

This film well and truely deserves a watch; the beginning initially takes a little while to get going , however, once in full motion, it doesnt give you time to stop and breathe.

Man on Fire is a fairly unusual title for this simple kidnapping/revenge movie. The title probably refers to the editor as the cut & paste flashbacks & slow motion sections give the film that little extra. Nice twist to the plot after the girl is kidnapped, but cant comment on it as it will spoil for all! Hire it on a wet saturday night & invite 6-stella artois round!

This is the first film I have given 5 stars, its great. Denzel Washington plays a great role and I am sure you have already read the plot, but at over 2 hours long this is a great Saturday night film - good story, great action. Must see!

It had some goods points but i always felt that something was missing or it was too slow.

Good Ol' Denzil don't let you down. Thoughtful, well acted and with a sensible script. Great action, in fact a tad bloodthirsty in places. A worthy rental.

What a fantastic movie!

First off you think this is just going to be an all action film. This is by far one of the best films I have seen in a long time the story the directing the way its put together is all brilliant has everything in the story from action to twists to emotion can't say enough good things about this film.

Haven't seen a film this good in a long time, what a story line. Must admit it brought tears to my eyes. Have recommended to alot of people they have to watch this.

Denzel washington is superb as always! At first your not too sure of his character or his background but you know there is a past that he wishes too forget. The relationship between the daughter and bodyguard is excellent and a shame more couldnt be done with this. keep an eye on this girl she's gonna be big! Then the story flips upside down and becomes very dark and twisted and the talents of denzel washington really show. 'Watch this film' but be warned can be graphic at times.

Really dissapointing stuff. Its shot like a very very long MTV video. Nothing happens for over an hour. The plot turns into an obvious stereotypical whodunnit, with action we have all seen before.

A rough outline of the story might sound like a rewrite of a 70s Charlie Bronson revenge movie but great casting, superb location, amazing cinematography, cool soundtrack, excellent acting - Denzel Washington as good as ever - and absolutely outstanding direction made this one of the best movies in a long time for me!

Qualiteee! Brilliant performance by Denzil Washington giving hope that there is always a chance of redemption even during the darkest times.

A story of a man who carries regret in his soul and seeks solace futiley in the Bible. He asks his mentor - the brilliant Christopher Walken 'will we go to Hell for the things that we did'. However, he begins to see a new life and new hope through his relationship with the girl he is paid to protect. When she is kidnapped, he seeks to kill verybody associated with her subsequent death. Unlike many movies in today's society, this move makes no excuses for the extreme violence, portraying it as essential to the path that he has chosen. A very stylish, violent thriller with superb acting.

Well acted, nicely shot, but oh, so predictable. You always know what`s coming next. This is barely a TV movie. Worth a watch if only for the performance of the little girl, but wouldn`t waste a Friday night on it.

Although a reasonable premise, and a promising start, the film midway through flops like an overcooled souffle into ridiculous he-man action antics, sentimentalism, and cliche. The plot also is paper-thin (I pretty much had it figured out) and although the acting is good (the little girl is excellent, and Denzel is Denzel...), it doesn't save the film. Mediocre, but watchable if there's nothing else on...

Man on Fire wasn't that well received when it came out, it was criticised for being over-stylish and reviewers felt this got in the way of the plot. Well, yes the film is very stylish, anyone familiar with Tony Scott previous films, i.e. Enemy of the State will know what to expect, (lots of colour filters, interesting camera work, edgy cuts), and he really has gone for it with Man on Fire, with mixed results. Washington as normal is top class and Walken does his effortless scene stealing act. One of the best performances of the film is from Dakota Fanning, who in my opinion is one of the best child actors of recent times and a future big star. On the whole the story/plot is engrossing and entertaining and the action is fantastic, even if it is sometimes a bit hard to swallow. A small criticism is Scott?s arty techniques which distract you in some of the important scenes. If you like your action films to have edge and be a little bit different then I very much recommend this film!

Man on fire is possibly one of the best films I have seen Denzel Washington in for a number of years. A former CIA agent, wasting himself away on drink & stuggling to come to terms with his past, takes up the un-envious task of being a bodyguard to a young girl (who's acting is fantastic given her age!) in South America. Hard hitting & at times brutal, it shows the horrors of the kidnap culture in the South Americas with far more impact than other titles based on that scenario (the dreadful 'Proof of Life' springs to mind). Walken is also at his less-wierd best & with a great, believable supporting cast, this film is well worth a night in!

Washington's character was convincing all the way through, and it just goes to show how revenge can be so explosive! Dakota Fanning was also fantastic as the daughter who Washington is assigned to protect. A must see.

steady beginning, brilliant middle, disappointing end. After such a brilliant middle to end, the last 5 minutes disappointed in that it felt a little rushed and illogical - the deal Denzel makes is just not logically necessary - 2 for one - just a route to try and over dramatise the ending.

The best film I've watched this year. Denzel Washington is excellent as usual, playing a mercenary who does not care about anything, least of all himself. When he is hired to protect a young girl from being kidnapped, he initially wants very little to do with her but she wins him over and they strike up a good relationship. This part of the film with the character development is a good basis for what happens next - the girl is kidnapped and he goes after the kidnappers, killing each one after torturing them for information. The action here is very violent but necessary to the film. There are a couple of plot twists too which add to this film keeping me engrossed throughout. Well worth watching!

Is Dakota Fanning the new Kirsten Dunst? Considering she was only 9 when she made this she's going to be a considerable force in Hollywood by the time she's reached adolescence. She's surrounded by an all-star cast including the wonderful Radha Mitchell (one of Aussie's finest), Denzil of course, crazy-hair Walken, Mr J-Lo Marc Antony and the debonnaire Rourke. The story centres on kidnappings in Mexico City. The film brings home the very colour, sights and smells of Mexico City, sprawling streets, corruption and danger mixed with sultry dark-skinned Latinos and crumbling colonial church towers reaching into heavy orange polluted skies. The film spills into the over-sentimental at times in the first half (radically corrected in the second) and Denzil's character is somewhat cliched but when the plot gets going you have to buckle up for the blood soaked ride. And even better - there's a MANZANO in the film! They get everywhere :) Watch this film and book your ticket to Mexico, baby.

Far superior to the last Denzel film i watched - the awful Out Of Time, Denzel must have read the script this time. A very good and slightly different revenge film though I doubt it will do South Americas' tourist industry much good. Check out the deleted scenes after you've watched the film as they help appreciate it more, also the alternate ending - not as brave as that used but more usual for such a film - and mmore to the audiences taste. All involved are on good form. Alot of the film is shot in, what can be, an annoying way but doesn't detract too much from film - think Black Hawk Down. Well worth a watch, as a more intelligent action film.

I enjoyed this film, the acting was sound, the story - simple but engrossing and the backdrop of Mexico was atmospheric. The only complaint was in the jumpy editing. Tony Scott's direction seemed reluctant to let the camera rest for too long and certainly during action or drama scenes the camera is all over the place, which for me was a little anoying. Denzel Washington stars as John Creasey, a former US army hitman who has fallen on hard times and is slowly drinking himslef to death. Offered a job by his seemingly only friend Ray (Christopher Walken) he becomes a bodyguard for a family in Mexico City, forming a bond with the yound daughter Pita (Dakota Fanning). When Pita is kidnapped and Creasey badly wounded, he vows to find the kidnappers and kill anyone involved in her abduction. So begins his one man war against the kidnappers and corrupt police syndicate in a number of innovative and set piece scenes. Washington is as good as ever playing the tortured Creasey, balancing his affection for Pita with his natural killing instincts. He also developed into a very fine action actor, bringing his own unique style and acting ability to the role. Dakota Fanning agai nshows herself to be an extraordinary perceptive actor for someone so young. However, there are two main criticisms of the film. The first is its length - its 30 minsutes too long and feels rather drawn out at points. The second is Tony Scott's direction. He uses too many visual gimmacks with shots jumping around the screen almost giving the viewer a headache at some points. But Scott has made an intelligent action thriller which manages to merge a good solid story, strong acting and ultra violent scenes to keep the viewer interested.

After seeing the disappointing The Manchurian Candidate, I wasn't sure about this movie. Im glad to saw its was superb. Great acting from Denziel and Dakota. A must movie of the year.

Good build up to the story as you see the relationship develope between Denzel Washingtons character and the young girl. She gets kidnapped when under her bodyguards care and the rest of the film is watching him try and get her back and then catch the kidnappers. It just goes on for to long half an hour to long. But never the less its a good film.

About time Denzel blew away the cob webs. A really entaertaining flick even if it was a bit OTT i n places. Good cast, script and effects! Well worth a view.

Nothing beats Denzel Washington playing a flawed character. This superb film magnificently highlights the skill of Mr Washington. He is very well-matched by Dakota Fanning, an amazing actress, especially for one so young. A clever plot with a slightly contrived ending - but still unmissable.

Poor old Denzil, a true A list star who kinda lost it with some of his films but that changes with this exciting,engrossing,red hot action film. Highly recommend for a night in with the misses ( she will enjoy this too ). Watch it, its really good.

Denzil is in top form in this movie and so is Christopher Walken. The film is quite cleverly set in Mexico and brings to light the very serious issue of Child Kipnapping. Very gripping action triller with a twist at the end! Five out of five triller!!!

I like Denzel and Walken, but this mish-mash of sentimentality, violence, cinematographical contrivances (like focus changes, colour changes and other minor effects), underscored by the most DIRE dialogue of 2004, loses it my fourth star. Indeed it only gets three thanks to Dakota Fanning whose performance is outstanding - one to watch for the future.

Like most other people who have wriiten reviews, i loved this film. The story line is a bit out there, but look beyond that, i never thought a film could get to me but this did. I would say to everyone watch this film. It really does have it all, action, humour, emotions, and the most important, actors that can act. Stylish insight and story into a Mexican world where there are several kidnappings every hour (Something like that) and corruption of the police is a well known fact. Denzel gives yet another strong performance which is necessary in order to carry off a believable 'hard man'role. Obviously well supported by Christopher Walken (need I say more?) and even a well acted part played by child prodigy Dakota Fanning (I think I spelt that right!...) as that is where a lot of fims can fall. Definitely one of the better ones out there...

This film looks like nothing is ever going to happen, a bit slow moving, nothing getting blown up but, because it's called Man on Fire, you know something has to go up in flames... so you keep watching and then KABOOM!!! it all kicks off and takes you on an intelligent, revengeful ride. Denzil executes the enemy unforgettably (and painfully!). A film that is thought provoking and leaves you pondering. Get it. You'll be surprised. Just started thinking about it again.........

Denzel at his best! Great story, Great acting. Washington is a bodygaurd to a little girl(Dakota Fanning, who is brilliant)and when she is kidnapped and he is shot trying to protect her, he vows to kill everyone and anyone who was involved in the kidnapping and failed ransom exchange. He embarks on a BLOODY killing spree that has to be seen to be believed. Grippng, with a few twists along the way, it will have you cheering him on and also a tear at the end. A must for all thriller fans, and i would defy anyone to not have watched this and really enjoyed it. SLAMMING...........

It is definitely a movie worth seeing. It remind me a bit of sin city - has certain elements to it that makes it similar, can't say too much without giving the film away. All I can say see that Dee leaves a trail of dead bodies, twisted in a plot of mystery as he seeks his revenge.

great movie - a gripping plot

Good inter-relationship between Denzel and Dakota. Hugely heart warming to watch the relationship of caring and sharing developing between an adult and child, excellent acting by both parties. Not very pleasant world we live in but capture the moments and make them precious. Never a dull moment.

I rented this film because I like Denzil Washington...and he doesn't seem to do a bad film...this is no exception. This movie has everything you could want in a film, superbly acted and a great storyline. Certainly in my list of great movies of all time...you will not be disappointed!

Im not quite sure where Tony Scott (dir) is trying to go with this, on one hand we have the films source material, (it is a well lamented fact that in Latin America 1 person is kidnapped every 60 minutes by organised crime). On the other the very strong cast Dakota Fanning who is instantly likable and has a big future ahead. Denzel seems to breeze through his role without breaking sweat, untill about midway mark and the plot envolves to an extent that he can get get his teeth into, but i just cant help but think it could have been better. There are visable traces of brilliance in the camera work but the gritty fast pace so evident in some of scotts earlier films notably Enemy Of The State and True Romance have not translated so well into a mexican setting. However this is a engaging film with solid performances and the odd suprise here and there to keep you engrossed and ultimately very wachable in deed.

Quite a violent film and may be a shock for some to see Denzel being so cold heartedly violent. There isn't too much gore and it is relevant to the story.

Denzel Washington turns in a gret performance, as does Dakota Fanning. A little on the bleak side, but thrilling viewing, if a bit gory in places.

Whoever gave less then 3 starz for this film, clearly did not understand the film, and Clearly were not clever enough to realise what an amazing and heartfelt film this was. I recommend this film to all ages above 18, including pensioners.

Very well paced, thoughtful thriller that keeps you engaged right to the end.

Denzel is a recovering alcoholic or as the story goes he still is one, sent into deepest southern america to serve as a freelance bodygaurd for rich Latin American families. The story is a little tedious at times, and the little girl he protects is played very well by the up coming star Dakota Fanning (War of the Worlds, Hide & Seek) who befriends him and is then subsequently kidnapped, were as Washington is injured and a on-recover goes after the people responsible, the later half of this movie does pick up the and the real dark side of ex military officer Denzel is convincing as is Fanning. Unfotunatly as the movie goes on its very easy to see the story line emerging before it well has!. A watchable film but dont expect anything like some of the films Denzel Washington has been in before. 3 Stars is worthy as i cant give it 2- 1/2 and 1 would not give it the justice it deserves. I think the 2hrs it commands is a little OTT it could have been told in an hour at the most.

Another fine example of why Denzel Washington should be recognised as one of the best actors of our time. This film was well shot, with a very good script and some excellent supporting actors.

What a brilliant movie! I class myself as seriously fussy, but it was just a cracking film. Deathwish and Gladiator all rolled in to one seemingly straightforward plot. Violent, but with a setting that suits it and the photographic work really added to the film when so often nowadays it appears to try to take your mind off the plot. Only two acting performances worth noting in the whole film, Denzel and the little girl from War of the worlds. But they're both brilliant. Get it, you won't be disappointed.

At first I thought thi film was gonna make me yawn but i really got into it! The first hour was really getting to know the characters and getting you really close with them until the second hour which is when all the explosive fast paced action starts. For over 2 hrs this film keeps us heavily involved with plot twist n turn a highly engaging film.

Not intelligent but not completely worthless because the brat's a knockout.

One of the best films I have seen in awhile & would definately recommend everyone to watch, amazing story line, keeps you gripped & great acting, overall brilliant, what more can I say!!!!

Fantastic, plot sounds very familiar , but oh my god am I glad I rented it, I bought it the following day, denzel is as hard as nails in this film, fantastic performance from Dakota Fanning. The finger chopping is ascene not to forget, see it you will not be disappointed.

I'm a bit unsure as to people's reactions to this film so I thought I'd add my own thoughts. No, this isn't the greatest film you'll ever see but it IS excellent - highly recommended and very enjoyable. Denzel is truly outstanding as a man haunted by his past demons who turns to drink in an effort to ease the pain. The camerawork and editing are excellent, as the scenes jump around to give you an idea of the thoughts that are going on in the character's mind. Yes, a lot of the violence is missing from the film but if you want a gorefest, go rent a Tarantino flick - I don't believe that this was ever intended to be a gut-wrencher and it doesn't need to be. However, the violence on show should be plenty graphic enough to keep most gore-lovers happy. As for all those moaning about the corny ending, I think it made the most sense considering the state that Creasy was in at the time. Yes, it might not be the ending that a typical movie fan would want to see but it is the most true to the story - hats off to the director for sticking to his guns. For all those that didn't know or haven't seen this film yet, an alternative ending is available within the 'Deleted Scenes' extra which may be more appealing if you didn't like the original. In addition, this is NOT a case of 'one man single handedly solves all of Mexico's kidnapping problems' movies which Hollywood is all too eager to churn out....Creasy has only one thing on his mind - to unleash an unmerciful vengeance on anybody even remotely related to the child's kidnapping. All in all, a really great film which I would heartily recommend.

Don't miss this film - although when you watch the deleted scenes you'll wonder why a number of these were left out - also the alternate ending is, in my opinion, better than the one they used in the film. Still, this is a class film with outstanding acting by all the cast....

What a film. From start to finish I was gripped. Dakota Fanning plays the young girl who gets kidnapped and to me pulls off the best performance of a child actress - EVER! Praise indeed.... Denzel is back to form and if you are a denzel fan or not you will be impressed by his almost super human acting talent. The film flows well, and is incredibly grity. Full of twists and turns, this film will have at the edge of your seats. Watch it!!!

Did not know what to expect from this film - but found it to be very good indeed. About half way through it steps up a gear and miserable old Denzil becomes very angree old Denzil. He delivers revenge in style! If you don't mind your films being a bit on the nasty and violent side you will love this.

This film is annoying, full-stop. The cinematography is appalling - the camera work will really REALLY get on your t**s. Also it is depressing, nauseatingly devoid of anything interesting. My fiancee liked this film but, trust me, it is BAD.

A good story but slow going!

Denzil Washington proves it doesnt take muscles and star looks to pull off a REALISTIC performance as a merc-turned-bodyguard who finds his forgiveness in the life of a ten yr old girl. Without using endless action to impress the audience the plot unfolds nicely and makes this a movie of the highest order in respect of the warrior code and bad things that good men do.

An extremely watchable film that is gripping to the end. I can't remember ever seeing a film with Denzel Washington and/or Christopher Walken that I didn't enjoy. Walken is looking much older nowadays but even as the 'good guy' he still has the screen presence to be scary. Denzel is simply one of the best actors in the world.

I did enjoy this film but unfortunately had to keep rewinding the DVD in order to catch the Mexican translation. This was often difficult to catch first time round.

I watched this movie weeks ago and it is still playing on my mind, mainly due to the lead casts performances which were outstanding. It is hard to believe that Dakota Fanning is as young as she is when she's churning out this kind of performance. You instantly adore her as she tries so hard to make a connection with closed off alcoholic bodyguard, Creasy. She could make the hardest man's heart melt with her intelligence, sympathy and empathy. You get to a certain point in the film and you think you know what you're getting, but everything is turned on it's head when you are thrown into a dark and disturbing world of revenge. Denzel Washington comes into this own as his character dishes out violence without even blinking. Despite this, you still see the man's heart and what drives him. Love for the girl, and he refuses to stop until that revenge is served. The ending will blow you away and have you crying buckets, so be prepared. The entire film has so much to offer, and this is Washington's finest performance which is only enhanced by Fanning who is spectacular. I urge you to rent it out because this is a film not to be missed.

This film was fantastic, kind of slow to start with as you had to lay the storyline down and then the action got going and that was really good, thought the ending could have been better though.

After all the hype my friends and collegues had given this film I was intersted to see if it live up to my expectations. At first I felt the film was not going to deliver. Good all round thriller/action flick

A somewhat unoriginal premise about an ex-special forces soldier becoming a bodyguard is actually a well made and enjoyable action flick. OK, the old cliches of the burned out trained killer finding his humanity again come up as expected but they are well handled by director Tony Scott. Denzel Washington is excellent as always and the little girl he is hired to protect seems a young talent, being surprisingly likeable rather than obnoxious like most American children in films. There are some well crafted action scenes and the second part of the film really builds up towards the climax. OK, there's nothing new here in the story or the characters but its put together in such a way as to be an enjoyable and exciting movie to watch.

This film deserves a van load of 'OSCARS' for being the most convoluted, & disjointed 140 minutes I'v ever had the displeasure to sit through. Almost immediately following the kidnapping scene the characters all began talking out of sync!!and in order for the Mexicano lines to be understood we were obliged to watch sub-titles which went on & off before one could decipher what was said or the background was too light to read them anyway.Suffice to say at least 40 minutes could well have been cut covering irrelevant filming jumping about all over the place in between the plot, even commercial advertizing would have been preferable to watch ( and that's saying something!!! ) I would tather have been kidnapped my self before it started. SORRY.

Definately a watchable film if violence doesn't put you off. To counter this though there is a great story and exactly what you would expect from an actor of his quality.

You cannot fault this movie, but at the same time it is difficult to rave about. The story of a bodyguard (Washington) who has some personal problems hired ot protect a little girl (Fanning) is good. The acting is first class. But this film does tend to drag and it feels like its all been done before. This is a good movie, but I wouldnt put it top of the list.

How many times are we to be subjected to this sort of predictable, mindless drivel? Kidnapping in Latin America is currently a serious problem. Yet this doesn't deter Tony Scott using his conventional flashy direction, quick tricksy editing, pointlessly overblown action sequences, all played to a cool soundtrack. The only issue here is one of revenge, Hollywood style. All seriousness goes out of the window as the body count rises, and Denzil goes all Arnie on us. RUBBISH.

Denzel Washington shows his dark side in this tremedous adventure. Not recommended for the squeamish. Tony Scott displays the directing finesse which has been lacking in some of his other receent films but which originally made him a name to watch. Dakota Fanning continues to impress me as one of the very best young actresses out there. Well paced, with great supporting cast, some moments of geuine emotion. When required by turns unflinchingly brutal and unashamedly emotional, this is a great film with a geuinely surprising finale.

This film starts of slowly, with a dodgy script and mediocre acting, but gets better the more you watch with a realistic ending!

Slow to get going but once it does, Denzil goes round seriously kicking the butts of kidnappers. It was probably better than Casualty - but not much.

A classy action thriller , nearly making the top of the rating scale. Not quite in the Leon league but thereabouts. The comparison is deserved at a number of levels ,with crooked cops and pivotal relationship between man - child as two main protagonists. The background noise made a couple of the dialogues less clear but the overall effect of life in this kidnapp capital,was well observed. Quality acting from all. Watch it.

Denzel Washington seems able to turn his hand to any kind of role and pull it off with great success. He does it again in this Tony Scott effort opposite the disturbingly intense Dakota Fanning. Washington plays a bodyguard to the daugheter of an American family in Mexico City (Fanning) who has serious personal issues. The film combines the usual Scott action flourishes with a more serious look at politics in Latin America, providing a tense and twisting tale. I'd heard a lot about this film before I finally got around to watching it and was afraid it would have spoit it - I needn't have worried. Recommended for anyone who likes their action films with a little bit of thought put into them.

All 3 stars should be set on fire for creating such an inane film - Rourke & Walken were a waste of space anyhow.

The first half builds up well, concentrating on character and the relationship between Washington and his ward. It all falls apart in the second, with director Scott opting for wobble-cam, fast cutting and cheap visual effects for the MTV generation. It ends up looking like a pop video with actors drowning somewhere in the middle of it; that's a pity, as Scott can do so much better, and it's also some of Washington's better work.

Creasy ( DW) is a washed up Ex bodyguard who drinks to keep the memories away. Meets up with a 10 year old adorable little girl who unlocks his heart and makes him smile again. When she was kidnapped, he was wounded. A month went bye and although still very sick, Creasy determined to find all those responsible and take his absolute revenge on them. The chemistry worked, this film is a must for our own library. It's the best action movie I've seen for some while, even better than Training Day.

Personally I found the camerwork in this film a breath of fresh air and am amazed at the negative reaction to it from the BBC and other reviewers. This is a fantastic thriller with superb performances from Denzel and the girl. Admittedly the story was predictable but this did not detract from the tension which was palpable throughout the film - thoroughly enjojable. 1 star deducted for the minimal use of Christopher Walken completely unforgivable

This film was quite slow to start. It took at least half an hour to get into it. Then it really got going, and we really started to enjoy it. Very suprising ending as well.

This is another excellent performance by Denzel Washington (and the cast). A good story and some good action. If you haven't rented it yet, and like Denzel Washington films, then put it on your list and I dont think you will be disappointed.

When i rented this i film i had heard a lot of hype surrounding it which always makes me jubious and also i didnt have a clue what the storyline was about. If you are into this genre of film,(action) similar to bourne supremacy style, then i would definately recommend this. I would even recommend it if you dont...my mum loved it!!! DEFINATELY 5 STAR..must see

What a top movie! Brilliantly shot, well lead by Washington (whos not my favourite) and a very good plot that twists and developes throughout. Despite being very violent with some horrendous scenes of torture and physical abuse but lets face it; there are nt many angels in this one. Most of all, the ending was brilliant. Watch it!

first rental since joining and prioritised some Denzel Washington films - good result. this film is compulsive watching, almost 24 style filmwork but with the added benefit of a believable plot, seeing as it is based on a true story! The film was very good but the quality of the DVD itself was very poor. The DVD kept skipping and stopping and our DVD player kept saying that it was unable to read the disc. This has also happened when watching Finding Nemo. Please ensure that the discs are clean before you dispatch them, as we enjoy watching a different variety of films but is very annoying when you cant watch the whole film peacefully!!

Have to say the first half an hour I came pretty close to giving up on the moive. Slow drawn out story telling totally take it or leave it stuff. Then wow. Fast pace kept me on the edge of the seat with eyes covered in parts at the gruesome effects. Great acting by Denzel, a real class act.

Enjoyed the story and action, and the relationship between Washington and Fanning is great. It was just a little slow and predictable and the jerky camera work, particularly at the end, spoils it.

This movie was very different to the usual hollywood movies. It felt more like a documentary then a movie and the camera work was a bit strange.Denzel was excellent as usual. Also outstanding was Dakota Fanning as Pita. This girl is gonna be big star one day. Very entertaining with lots of twists and turns. Highly recommended.

What messages do you hope to take away from a film? That revenge is good? That violence towards others is fun? It would be a relief to think this film is any more sophisticated than that. It's kind of sad to think this is lurking on a disk somewhere. Hopefully, it will take more than a few loud bangs to get people to embrace the kind of idiotic outlooks that are propagated in this film, even if is only for its duration.

This film would probably rate 4 stars with me if it wasn't for the strange way it is shot. The story is good, although graphically violent in places, and so is Denzel Washington and when shot normally you are gripped but then it slips into these strange episodes of 60's arty filming which are very annoying and distract your attention. If you can ignore these bits you'll enjoy the film, if you can't you feel cheated that the makers spoiled what could have been a very good movie.

not bad but you lose the plot,during the film,

This is yet another long film, but I actually...kinda...liked it. Probably because of the talents of both Denzel Washington and Dakota Fanning (even though they aren't in many scenes together). There are quite a few quirky, yet cringing moments/scenes in this film and the twist is fairly predictable, but still a good idea.

Even if you don't like action films, you will like this one (because there isn't much action in fact)...it's a good film though :-)

I want to give it 6/7 for the cast, but for the actual film it's a 5/7.

Cracking Story and excellent acting. Although over two hours long it ends all too quickly. Cameos from Chistopher Walken and Micky Rourke but Denzel Washington steals the show as an ex CIA agent who begins at rock-bottom but ends up sorting out corrupt Mexico City single handedly - Excellent!!

A story of a man bound to save a little girls life at the cost of his own. The film is based in Mexico where kidnappings are rife.

There's something about this movie which makes it special. I cant quite put my finger on it. You might expect there to be a good chemistry between Washington and the child or something of that nature but there isn't - instead it's just natural.

Perhaps that's what it is - the realisim instead of soppy manipulations of your emotions that other films do. Anyway, whatever it is, it works.

He's convincing as the bodyguard and she's convincing as the child and instead of some movies where they would go down the obvious route of making her a spoilt annoying rich kid, in this film they make her a proper character who is neither over appealing or under appealing.

For a film of 2 hours and 20 mins it's quite impressive that it doesn't feel like there's any padding.

Warning - this film is very violent!

This is one of the best action thrillers I've seen in a long time. It was rather surprisingly excellent - didn't think Hollywood was capable of it, but I see it is.

I think it is simply satisfying as a subject matter.

I highly recommend it.

Denzel is a great actor. The story is good and flows well. If you don't want to 'think' too much about a film and simply watch it then this one is it!

My only gripe with this film is the filming. It's a little bit over stylized for me and I didn't enjoy it as much as I would have liked. A film you can watch with the lads, some beer and pizza!

Denzel Washington is on top form, and when that is combined with the ever inventful director Tony Scott what you get is a superb movie. The acting from Washington supplemented superbly by Dakota Fanning (definitely one to watch) gives all the deep characterization you want and the inventive film direction results in a movie like no other.

The smile inducing moments in the first half are balanced beautifully with the dark torturous moments of the second half. Excellent!

What a great movie, it had everything. If the film paints a true picture of what happens in Mexico city then I'm never going there on holiday. This film not only has a brilliant actor but has come up with a great young actress too.

The film itself is over two hours but you never feel like the film drags in any way. Top marks.

I really enjoyed this film. Its starts a little slowly as it builds your relationship with the characters but just as you think it will never speed up you are brought into a whirlwind of action, drama and emotion with a storyline which keeps you completely hooked and wondering how it will end.

Definitely one to watch (if you have a spare 2 and 1/2 hours) and probably one to own.

This was the best film I have seen in a long time and what makes it even better is that it is a true story.

If you don't watch anything else watch this!!

The film is brilliant! It invloves issues that we cannot even begin to understand. The setting in Mexico City is great and the performance from Denzel is amazing. He swerves away from his usual hero cop role to try something more interesting.

All in all a very enjoyable film to watch if a little violent at times. Not for the faint-hearted!

I had high hopes for this. Denzel Washington starring, Tony Scott directing. The trailers even looked good. Not long into the movie we are introduced to Washingtons character along with, Christopher Walkens character. I didn't know Walken was in this, so it was a very nice surprise. Walken is a genius. Unfortunatley there isn't enough of him in the movie. The plot is a good one and the subject matter is excellent, but the execution is woeful.

Another case of style over substance directing and a story that just seems to plod along not really getting anywhere. It looks like we are finally getting somewhere when the main players start to kick ass, but unlike the rest of the movie, this is over too quickly, and suddenly we are at the end, which is pure cheese by the way. Not recommended.

Denzel Washington excels in this role. From one minute an out-of-sorts drunk who dislikes children, then becoming a one-man-army giving an ultimate sacrifice.

Beautifully shot, well scripted, tense, fast, and touching.

If you haven't heard of this film and want to take a risk by renting it out, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Yet another outstanding performance from Mr Washington. Nice to see him playing this kind of role. A film well worth watching.

I was looking forward to this movie, but a reasonable story line was destroyed by the director Tony Scott.

For some reason, Tony has been unable to decide if he was shooting a pop video, or a lifestyle (aka Martini) advertisement. The result, a truly unpleasant experience, as the picture we watch goes through a series of visual gymnastics,which detract from the story.

Watch it but be prepared for a headache.

Denzel just gets better and better,this is an absolute scorcher of a film, highly recommended great story line and plenty of action. Washed up alcoholic gets job in mexico city as bodyguard to wealthy family looking after their young daughter and things go badly wrong.

Revenge film at its best, most excellent.

Tony Scott ditches the glamour of his previous Bruckheimer polished durge and comes out all gritty. It's how revenge movies should be. Gritty, dark, humouress and the hero isn't really the hero. He's just doing what he knows best..killing.

Dakota Fanning shows off her incredible presence once more and Denzel is equally as good as the redemptive Creasey. It's like Point Blank without the memory of Payback.

The film was ok but not the best I've seen, Denzel was good and the film was a bit too violent for my liking but does Dakota Fanning have to be in every film with a kid? She's everywere! J Lo's Hubby No3 was very good, she should take acting lessons from him!

This was a strong performance from D.W. the film was totally involving, the acting outstanding, the changes in pace keeps the story riveting throughout.

Original spin on the usual action formula. Great acting, great direction and an overall excellent film. I expected this to be at least okay but it surpassed that by a mile.

What can I say about this film other than it was brilliant!!

Denzel plays his role as a child bodyguard with total passion. However the star of the film is definitely Dakota Fanning.

A definite must see film, I would recommend it to everyone.

Isn't it nice to see a movie that does not rely on special effects to win the audience over? Out of all the movies out there what came number 1 on Capitals top 100 films? Shawshank Redemption. And why? Because it has such an encapsulating storyline. This film sets out, and achieves, a similar principle.

Dakota Fanning acting is absolutly flawless, controlling every scene she appears in and making the story that much more real. You end up feeling what the characters feel, and that is what makes this movie that bit more special. Not only the story makes this movie strong but its filming style has qualities rarely seen. The sometimes confused/jumpy/flashback style perfectly reflects the emotional state of that character at that time.

Bottom line is. If you want a movie with an absorbing story, and no in-your-face special effects, this is for you!

Although this film started very slowly and I nearly turned it off, I thoroughly enjoyed it once the real action started. Good action scenes and great acting from all the cast makes it a film worth recommending.

I found this film about half hour too long. It takes ages to get going, its not one of Denzel's best.

The camera work gave me motion sickness and rather a nasty headache at the end. Why all the zooming in and out and flashing camera shots? It was like watching a 1900's flicker movie in some parts.

Give me Bone Collector anyday!

Fantastic… Washington is superb. Wasn’t too sure what to expect but this film delivers. The story is not unique but is told extremely well. The film moves at a fast pace and the action is just what you would expect from an ‘action’ movie which is sadly done so poorly in other films.

This one is definitely worth a watch.

Slightly slow to start but soon up and running. Denzel Washington as always in superb form and whilst the storyline follows the typical style for this type of movie it still grips.

Not for the squeamish!

If you're in the mood to see Denzel unhinged and over the top in a film a bit more brainless than 'Training day', this is the film. You'll know everything that happens from the opening credits, but that doesn't make it any less fun -- and Dakota Fanning even pulls off the 'lovable precocious kid' role.

Especially recommended if you're feeling vindictive.

It is difficult to know what to excpect from Tony Scott who appears to have moved from straightforward feelgood action films like Top Gun and Beverley Hills Cop 2 (eek!) to more edgy and dark action thrillers like, 'Enemy of the State', and 'Man on Fire'.

I very much enjoyed his direction of the film. The use of merging images and subtitles add to the movie without forgetting what this movie essentially is which is an excellent action film with good performances all round shot in a superb location. It may be a bit lofty at points but I think this kind of film often fails for lack imagination, an accusation which certainly cannot be levelled here.

A commendable performance from Washington in a type of role in which he has been mediocre of late and an excellent performance from young Dakota Fanning who is talented without appearing precocious.

The twist is not that surprising but the performances and the story make this a great film.

Excellent film, superbly directed, excellent dialogue, superbly acted. All things considered a well rounded movie. The only criticism that I have (and thats a small criticism) is that the they didn't truly explore the character played by Denzel Washington, you felt like there was more to this guy, and you were going to find out but you never did.

But as I said I thoroughly enjoyed this.

I quite enjoyed this action flick which stars Denzel Washington. Washington is, of course, a class actor, and in this film he is alongside Christopher Walken and some excellent Latin American actors. The film is set in Mexico where the wealthy and elite face risks from kidnapping to the extent that they have insurance against it, which requires them to have a bodyguard. In financial difficulties Samuel Ramos (Marc Anthony aka Mr J. Lopez), hires Creasy (Washington) to be responsible for his daughter, Pita and his American wife, Lisa. Creasy has an impeccable resume but has a drinking problem which Ramos is aware of but asks that it is kept from Lisa. Emotionless Creasy eventually warms to the daughter and gets involved in her life. He tries to head off a kidnap attempt (killing two corrupt Police officers involved) , but Pita is too scared to run when she sees that he has been shot and is snatched.

The film gets fast paced as Creasy takes revenge on the kidnappers and all those who stood to profit from it. At points you need to suspend your disbelief at the actions of this one man superhero, but the setting of Mexico City and the corruption makes for fascinating viewing.

Man on Fire - good cast, original plot, well worth watching.

My heading speaks for itself. About a alcoholic bodyguard who's pre-teen client shows him the purpose of life. Can't say too much without ruining the story for you but this is one of the few emotional action movies I've seen with a decent storyline in a long time. This film is no Rambo, this man has real emotions but shields himselves from them. A bit long, but highly recommended.

It's not my usual type of film but I thought it started well and then got even better. Well worth watching.

A gripping story line and the odd gory scene made this a great movie. I thought Washington’s character was well developed and the movie left you still questioning what had happened in his past, rather than being a typical Hollywood movie that answers all questions. I was surprised to find myself quite moved at the end of the movie, which is not normal for this genre of movie.

I was not sure what to expect when I ordered this film and was presently surprised. It was interesting to see Denzel Washington in such a role, there were good twists and turns and the ending did not disappoint.

Denzel Washington is one of my favourites, and I enjoy most of his movies to one degree or another. Man on Fire is no exception. Quickly get past the basic and rather cliched premise and the film has everything required, including plot, pace and characters to believe in.

The violence is violent, the film is edited with a jagged edge and Tony Scott directs with aplomb. A great film to simply sit back and enjoy.

We thoroughly enjoyed this movie, we believe Denzel Washington (alongside Morgan Freeman) to be one of the best actors around. In this he stars as a burnt out CIA operative who takes a position as bodyguard to a young daughter (Dakota Fanning) of a family living in Mexico City. When she is kidnapped the ransom drop gets botched and then Denzel really loses his cool.

Watch out for some very quite graphic action as Denzel goes seeking revenge. We particularly loved his retribution on the Chief of Police. Dakota Fanning looks like a star of the future and watch out for her in War of the Worlds later ths year with Tom Cruise.

This was a very good, very well made film, kept us gripped right from the start. The little girl in is is a great actress and as usual Denzel Washington is fabulous. Well worth watching, best film i've seen in ages.

Man on Fire is a fast-paced action thriller, starring Denzel Washington to keep any action groupie happy. At the same time, it really pulls at the heart strings towards the end, so keep the tissue box handy.

A top film based on bodyguards in Mexico employed to look after rich families. A very good film which starts off slow and builds up to an explosion of emotions and action all the way. A good ending and a rollercoaster of emotion.

One of my top 10 films and I had a tear in my eye. Watched it twice!

I wouldn't say I was awe inspired the subject has been done before it is basically a revenge flick but it is a good revenge flick not the average and certainly not as insipid as dead mans shoes. But Denzel is great he has made a few turkeys recently almost on the same theme but this is good you can sense the anguish of the charactor and his failings. There are some great acting performances in this especially Christopher Walken and Dakota Fanning that make this a better than average movie.

It took me a little while to get into this but then it really sucked me in. Superbly modern but plays like a classic revenge flick. Very stylish, very tightly played.

Excellent performance from Mr. Washington as per usual, outstanding music score and belter of a storyline. Violent but not mindless. One of his best.

This was an excellent film, I love Denzel films and he certainly doesn't let you down in this one.

It's fast paced and keeps you guessing all the time. There were a couple of times when I shut my eyes but then I am a bit of a girl when it comes to blood and guts. Although it's a serious film there were a couple of moments that made me smile.

A very average, predictable revenge thriller that is very much style over substance.

For anyone looking for a little bit more from a revenge thriller, I would recommend Dead Man's Shoes or Old Boy.

This film was absolutely fantastic! You could say I'm a little biased as I'm a Denzel Washington fan but I thought the story line was great and the acting was superb. There is a dark side to Washington in this film which I thought he played really well. Would be good to see him play this sort of character again. His character is a bad guy in some respects but he ends up being the good guy! A very surprising end...don't wanna say what it is as it will spoil it...this is a must watch film! A*

I was pleasantly surprised by this film I thought that the plot may be a bit slow to get into and I had not huge many reviews previous but I would say it was well worth the watch and definitely pulls on the old heart strings.

Fantastic performance from Denzel and the little girls actress, plot twists and turns and is not that easy to second guess. All in all a great film.

I was a bit bored as action films are not really my thing. It was well acted but the plot was in places a bit predictable.

Denzel Washington is an interesting choice for the part of a former government agent with a shady past. The film sometimes feels a bit like a pop video with its mixture of unorthodox camera techniques, and its at times, novel soundtrack.

Overall it is consistently compelling, which is more than can be said for the film it could have been if some of the deleted scenes hadn't been cut. To conclude though, I could help feeling it was a studio produced formula wrapped up world cinema style clothing.

Excellent film. Great performance from Washington and direction from Scott. Unusual film location for a mainstream US film (Mexico), subject matter and action throughout made this one of the more enjoyable films of this genre I've seen in a long time. The additional deleted scene extras are particularly good with an interesting alternate ending is available.

Interesting Film - a film of 2 halves. The film contrasted between pulling the heart strings as the tough bodyguard softens however this contrasted to the violent 2nd half.

Never in all my time of film watching, has a film turned on its head, from its humble beginings, to its riveting conclusion. Denzel yet again, without being a hollywood favorite delivers a fantastic peformance, which makes this movie a must see film, if you only rent one movie this year then make it this one, you will not be disappointed.

Denzel Washington stars in this film who is a bodyguard for a little girl. Their friendship develops after a turbulent beginning. I would say one of denzel's best films.

I wasn't sure I'd enjoy this, the brief seemed quite ordinary, but I was very pleasantly surprised. I thought Washington played his part with real feeling, and I was engrossed by the story. At last a hero with real human weaknesses, and one who doesn't get everything right.

I'm not ashamed to say I cried at the ending.

I knew this film was gonna be good and it was Denzel Washington pulls off another powerful role and makes it look easy! I would recommend this film to anyone, there is a few weepy shots that kinda just take up film space but it doesnt spoil the film at all, there is a some ahort appearances of the legendary Christopher Walken and Micky Rourke, but they are just sideline player Washington steals the lime light, as the main character riding high on madness and revenge! Brilliant film! Watch it or dont!

Plays the line nicely between action and drama, helped very much by some thoughtful direction and the ever reliable performance from Denzel Washington. The main character is made likeable whilst remaining almost seperate from what he does which is kill. Could have done with a bit more script work but overall a good film to watch on a night when you don't just want Arnie/Sly/ Bruce and can engage with the subject a little.

This is one of the best films I have seen for a while. Combining violence, humour, high emotion and top quality acting it entertained from start to finish with a constantly changing pace.

At times very touching, at others very violent but always captivating. I absolutely recommend this film. You will go from wiping a tear to watching from between your fingers squirming.

Pretty typical of Director Tony Scott’s output - bright, brash and visually (over) stimulating, but lacking a touch of class that would take it above your average popcorn action movie.

Washington and Walken are both fine actors and do their best, but are let down by a poor, cliché-ridden script and a fairly predictable plot.
Dakota Fanning is as cute as a button and out-acts many of her adult co-stars, and there’s even a cameo for Mickey Rourke, who it is always nice to see.

The movie takes a while to get going, but when it does Scott is in his element and the enjoyment factor rises, although he sometimes gets over-excited with the weird camera angles and constant cutting, and forgets to show us what is actually happening.
Not a great movie, but enjoyable enough if you don’t take it too seriously - the people making the film obviously didn’t.

This is a fantastic film - I couldn't fault it. Denzel Washington is a first-rate actor and doesn't disappoint here, and Dakota Fanning is a huge talent for one so young.

A really terrifying but mesmerising journey into the world of kidnapping and one man's mission to deliver his own form of justice to the kidnappers. This isn't your usual shoot 'em up movie though, as Denzel is too good an actor and would be wasted in an Arnold Schwarzenegger type of role where the gun does all the talking, but punishment there is and it certainly made me wince more than once. Highly recommended.

For such a brutal film, it's surprisingly full of touching moments between Denzel and Dakota Fanning.

Not the sort of annoying syrupy stuff that spielberg tacks on to the end of his films either. Still not for the faint hearted but well worth a view if you're after something not too far off the beaten path.

This is definately one for the collection.

Elements of Leon - the relationship between a little girl and a clapped-out assassin. Elements of Reservoir Dogs - visceral violence in flashy, over-stylised scenes. Denzel Washington's character gets off his head in a similar fashion to Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction, with a long time condensed into a short time by means of fragmented jump-cuts. All with the intent of making something as good as the films it's copying, but none of the artistic sense that makes those original films great. It's far too obvious what the director's trying to "do" to the audience. The acting is good but the whole film is the ultimate in pretentious crime flick. Unless you're impressed by guns and ultra-violence no matter what the context, do yourself a favour and save yourself the time I wasted watching not quite all of it.

I loved this film and have watched it repeatedly! The acting is fantastic, the plot is emotional and it is beautiful shot. I loved the music aswell and i'm considering buying the soundtrack. I have suggested it to many friends who found it just as enjoyable. A good movie to watch as a couple. Got the action for the boys and the emotion for the girls. A movie that my boyfriend and i totally agreed on which doesn't happen very often.

Good action blockbuster with the usual caveat - a plot flaw. Why did DW have to sacrifice his own life? Why was a simple exchange not sufficient, bad man's brother for innocent child? Also the establishment of the situation was a bit tedious. You knew the kidnap was looming but I was ready for the action a bit earlier. Lighting well dodgy. Anyone got a torch?

Didnt enjoy the film one bit, very predictable poor end. Cinematogrophy was poor, the rapid change of scene gets very annoying, very CSI, he also has a bad habit of repeating himsef when asking the ''BAD GUYS' questions, pretty poor

What a terrible film, can't imagine why we watched the whole thing, awful acting, story line was dull and predictable!!

What a truely terrible film. There is no denying Mr. Washingtons ability as an actor, but he is wasted in this excuse of a movie. The first half of the film is a slow burner, taking an hour to build characters when 30 minutes could have done the job just as well... but at least you think it's building up into a clever, thought-provoking flick. However, the second half of the film then deteriorates into .. well, I'm not quite sure how to describe it. If ever you needed an example of a film that just loses the plot half way through then you've come to the right place! AWFUL.

Denzel Wahington's good in this film, and the f*** You factor is well up there, especially on interesting ways to kill mafioso. Bit stereotypical in the portrayl of Mexico as a dangerous place for American ex pats, even if they end up kicking the mexican's ass. Shakey camera movement made me feel a bit queasy and the outcome was a wee bit predictable.

All I can say is Wow...Can't believe I hadn't seen this film until now... Such a beautiful piece of film and storytelling. Kept me enthralled and hooked all the way through... You MUST see this film...no excuses this is amazing!

This film builds and builds all the way through to a violent climax that is well justified. Washington, as ever, is superb and Walken is great in support. Good story, great cast and one ends up feeling surprisingly sympathetic with the main characters. Marc Anthony was a total surprise... didn't know he could act this well! Rent it for the action packed ride it is although the camera work may well get on your nerves to start with as it tends to shoot around a bit.

This film was one of Densil's better ones (which is saying something) though still not the best movie of all time. Get this if you are really stuck for anything else to watch as the director went a little arty with the shots at some points and the first half is very slow.

In doing so, he finds an objective in his life again and when this child goes missing he sets out to find the kidnappers. Through out the film I have felt that Dakota Fanning, Giancarlo Giannini, and Christopher Walken have a little extra realism than Denzel Washington. However the only thing lets this movie down is disorientating camera shots. If you want to watch an action film with a story line than this is the one for you.

yes, an ok plot, but basically the same as all the 'edge of the seat thrillers' with a slightly different slant. Didn't even bother to watch it to the end. In essence, predictable and boring.

This is a poor, poor film. I fancied an easy going American thriller, suspend my mind and beliefs for a couple of hours, but what we got was a film that didn't know what it wanted to be. One the one hand it was funky shaky camera angles with an MTV slant on something as simple as subtitles. When the characters were speaking Spanish fine, mine ain't that good, but also when they were speaking English? Then there was the guy brought in to protect young girl, guy has drink problem harbouring some nebulous pain, girl likes guy, guy doesn't accept friendship, girl gets upset, guy tries to kill himself, didn't work (dodgy bullet) and he puts down drink and bonds with girl. I don't know, I found the swim coaching scenes mawkish, yes swim coach scenes! But I guess we're building up the relationship to take it away. Then the latter half of the film is your shoot up 'em / revenge film. The premise of this revenge is not believable. Not to give too much away I was hoping and praying that Creesey had supposited earlier explosion device inside his person at the end of the film, but alas know, we can't have Hollywood A listers sticking explosive material where the sun don't shine, well not at work anyway. Good performance from Mr Walken though although I cringed for him when he delivered the line, I paraphrase 'He's an artist of death....and this is going to his materpiece.' This wasn't unfortunately, lame story, poor writing, ever so slightly boring, don't be drawn in by the big names.

Great acting as expected from the cast - but what lets this movie down is Tony Scott's need for swoosh-whoosh fast edits, raggedy zooms and fancy slow mo's. Very tiring on the eyes.. and not always necessary

Denzel does it again. Great movie with a good supporting cast. This movie had passed us by when it came out at the cinema and we stubled on it thanks to LOVEFILM. Those Mexicans are mad!! Quite violent but the baddies deserve it. Beautifully shot. This is just a good movie - watch it. Only negatives are a little long and the use of leftover music from Gladiator.

Man on fire is an ok film, sometimes its genuinely good. that is, if I wasn't for the editing and post production values. It has a jittering/jarring effect that seems to vibrate the screen, now used sparingly it would have added to the film, but it is used ALL THE TIME! Now I’ve seen a lot of films with different effects and none have given me the headache that this did, I very nearly turned it off because of this effect. Something I very rarely do. Now by all means watch the film, just don’t say I didn’t warn you.

A lot of the time changing the location of the story does not work, but in this case, the good acting & fast paced directing, made the change barely noticable.

If you're into retribution/revenge it's definitely for you. Great acting and good story. Great ending with a twist. Bit bloodthirsty though.

I have only seen a selection of Denzel Washington films, namely this, Training day and bone collector, and in each i have been glued to the screen. an absolutely Tense cracker, and young girl (dakota fanning) is also very good. But this has prompted me to watch more by denzel as his acting is superb.

About time. So many revenge films before it just seem to bring the villains to 'justice' by enabling the baddy to be caught and reprimanded and leave you feeling that the punishment didnt fit the crime. This is real justice. A little bloodthirsty maybe (as someone already reviewing it said), but more fitting. Not sure if I would have ended it the way they did but it didnt spoil the film. Denzel Washington is such a brilliant actor. Watch it if you've had a bad day.

It your into Denzel Washington then this is another one of his films to be enjoyed. Not your typical action thriller. Draws you in with the drama and involvement with the family. Plot appears to be straight forward but there is a twist. This is not completely action packed but makes up for it by commanding your complete attention. I was say on the edge of my seat waiting to see where it was going trying to guess the next steps. Great film which was thoroughly injoyed.

I've had a run of films all with Denzel Washington in them and he was particularly good in this film (as is Dakota Fanning). As it was from my film list rather than my husbands he expected this to be a chick flick. I started watching this on my own and suggested I put this off when my husband came home about 10 mins into the film - he said to leave it on and we were both pleasantly surprised how good it was.

brilliant acting not for the light hearted.

A good all-round action film, and rather bloodthirsty (for those who like that sort of thing) - but strikes me as being an American take on the better (imo) french film 'Léon' (The professional) - i.e., tough guy fights corrupt police out of love for a girl. Overall still very good and worth a watch, I just don't give 5 stars unless a film really really shines.

Action packed and moves like an express train, full of emotions of all kinds, acting is superb. A film that definitely is the best movie i have seen in a while.

Touching story about the relationship between a burnt out ex government agent turned alcoholic bodyguard. Not simply a revenge flick. Has more substance than that. Starts slow but as the relationship between Denzel and Dakota Fanning flowers bringing Denzel back to the land of the living. The harmony is devastated and Denzel ignites into an unstoppable force of nature.

Must see viewing; powerful , violent yet very moving..

The start of the film is a bit slow to get going but it is well worth sticking with it as it gets better as it goes on. It is another good film from Denzel Washington and Dakota Fanning.

As always a fantastic performance by Dakota Fanning and Denzel Washington. I have watched this film many times and each time it gets better and better. The violence never fails to shock me and I love the contrast between Creasy's treatment of the girl and his methods of revenge. I don't see the 'cheese' that some have commented on, only the special bond between them which helped to 'save' both their lives.

Outstanding. An excellent example of a very violent film that manages to simultaneously attack our sensibilities while telling a compelling story in a sensitive an nuanced manner. The performances of both Denzel Washington & Dakota Fanning are memorable, particularly in the scenes together. Dakota who plays the part of Pita, the lonely but highly intelligent daugter of wealthy Mexicans, manages to project great presence and charm without the slightest suggestion of overacting. Denzel who plays the part of an x CIA assassin come bodyguard (Creasy), hired by the wealthy parents of (Pita) conveys with real clarity a man tormented by his past. The central relationship of the film is that between the lonely child Pita and the torrmented soul Creasy and how as their friendship grows both experience a kind of redemption and growth. Even without the brilliant action this story stood alone. The violence is extreme but in context to the story not out of place. However, for those of a sensitive nature one or two scenes may cause some queezyness. I loved it though. Nothing like seeing scum getting what they deserve in a good old fashioned revenge tale. It would be unfair not to mention Christopher Walken's contribution in the form of Rayburn, a morally ambiguous friend of Creasy and former CIA overlord of some stripe. It took me some time to decide if he was going to turn out to good or bad. Walken simply underlines the class of this film and brings his unique brand of supercool to the proceedings. The film bulids up to a fantastic climax that will not disappoint.

the film itself was quite good. The storyline is good enough and the acting is whats 2 be expected from a Denzel Washington film. The only thing I didnt like was the arty, distorted cut scenes (in the swimming pool and such). Apart from that, well worth a watch, you could do much worse.

I selected this film because Denzel Washington is in it. His acting is as good as you would expect. However, the film was nothing like I expected. The filming technique the director used made the film was very unusual and made things very disjointed for me and I found it hard to follow the story easily. There are a lot of subtitles and the technique used for these is also unusual, so you have to pay very close attention. My understanding from the end credits is that this is based on a true story which makes it a very powerful story. It is well worth seeing.

OMG. That was a fabby film. Absolutely edge of your seat stuff. Denzel was at his very best and the little girl (Dakota Fanning), well, this just has to be one of her best performances. Great story and the relationship which develops between the child and Denzel's character is very touching.

This has to be one of the best films that I have seen in a long time. It was really and unknown and I was not sure even when it arrived, but WOW - Denzil Washington is brilliant portraying Creasy the ex govt assassin with a drink problem. Christpher Walken as Rayburn supports well as Creasy's old friend. I will not spoil the film, but the twists and turns, coupled with the ruthlessness from Creasy make this a first rate film.

In my opinion, one of the biggest missed opportunities in recent cinema. Although still quite a good movie this could have been a modern classic if the excellent storyline had been handled with due deftness, sensitivity and imagination. The cast is great - particularly an amazingly good performance by the child star (Dakota Fanning) and so is the soundtrack, settings, and cinematography. It is let down by having a lazy, lacklustre, prosaic director. The subtleties are largely abandoned in favour of attention-grabbing violence and cliche. There was absolutley no need for such gimmicks. Given what it could have been I'm surprised the studio released it in this form.

I understand this film is based in some reality but I doubt the revenge was any sort of slowly growing crescendo. Most dispatches are out of site and left to your own imagination to complete. The sub culture is real enough, rank poverty, endemic extortion at all levels of the government. Denzel is a very engaging person, and the story unfolds largely through his eyes and therefore worth a look. Recommend but does contain violences

Enjoyed this film a lot, good story line and fast moving with twists on the way.

I like Denzil Washington, and I like him even more after seeing this film. Up until now it was always one of those films that I wanted to see at the cinema, but missed and had reservations about buying it. Since watching it I've purchased a copy. He has the gritty character down to a tee and it is fantastic to watch as his child charge manages to melt his heart. I won't spoil it for anyone but please have your tissues ready for the end. I bawled my eyes out!

The film is one long rollercaoster. Starts slowly building up the characters and how they relate to each other but then comes to life with a fast pace story line that leaves you empathising with the main character Creasy. Excellant acting through out, only criticism is the NYPD blue style of camera work does start to grate ont he nerves after a while.

Superb thriller, Denzel WAshington gives a typically understated and compelling performance as a reluctant bodyguard, and childs performance is touching rather than usual Hollywood cloying.

This film was meant to be full of violence and it was so. The ending was unexpected and good.

I watched this having rented it from Amazon. The chemistry between Denzel and Dakata is very compelling and the warmth from their relationship is obvious. It is a very compelling storyline with a few twists and suprises. It explores the corruption within Mexico City's police through the story of a child being kidnapped, and the effect of this on the body guard who was protecting her. All in all I enjoyed the film greatly and thought both performances where excellent.

The film moves forward at a good pace and the acting is good, yes a good film indeed. I liked the clear refrences to what you would recognise from reading a book. One or two scenes stood out as odd, but would work well in a book. The ending followed the progress of the man on fire, yet the translation from a book of a strong man that can take shots and carry on at only little slower past than before he took the last shot is a little increduleous, but clearly this filmn was taken from a book, so you have to indulge in the storeyline, like you would reading the book. Did I say this read like a book? Surposed I did.

This was one of those films that i had previously heard people speaking about. One of they films that you would pick up off the shelf in a video shop and(not anymore due to LOVEFILM) read the back and put back as there are so many films of the same genre out there, and in my opinion are all relativly the same. However, this film had it all. Firstly, in my opinion hte best actor we have today 'Mr Washington'. Secondly it had amazing action and fantastic storyline...Not James bond 'Hollywood' action but action that was actually believable. Lastly this film gives you a lump in your throat after watching. 'Man on Fire' really grips you, places you in Denzels shoes and gives you a fantastic 2 hours!! In my opinion - This is up there with the best of them!!

Man on fire is not a film to watch for action but has a reasonably good storyline.

Just like the way a 99 flake always comes up with the goods, Denzel doesnt fail to disappoint with another heroic tale dovetailed with an accomplished acting performance... the man that the American's want Barack Obama to be has delivered once again....

I thoroughly enjoyed this film, it took some doing though! It's extremely slow to start but once it gets going it is great. The action and tension just pile up. The characters are totally believable and without noticing it you start to care what's going to happen to them. Denzel Washington is excellent as a cold blooded killer and Dakota Fanning is charming as the little girl. Worth sitting through and then watching again.

If Denzel's in it then it's never a bad film! Gripping thriller also recommended to us by some friends of ours who are good movie buffs. Also has an emotional plot to it so had the wife crying buckets at the end. Must see.

Quite simply stunning. One of the best films I have ever seen.

The premise of the film is basically one of vengeance & violence. Denzel Washington is the alcoholic, bible-reading assassin/bodyguard tracking down the gang responsible for kidnapping his cute charge, Dakota Fanning. Vengeance does indeed arrive at the end, slow-paced as it is, but I found that the happy ending for Dakota only was a little contrived, as she was the only redeeming character in the whole film. The flashy camera work got rather annoying at times too, but the decent acting does hold it together throughout, so you will probably find that you get involved in this movie despite the stated drawbacks.

This was an action packed movie which kept me on the edge of my seat all the way through. It did get a bit gory as part of the revenge plot but definitely worth a watch.

A film like any other film about someone hire a bodyguard to look after a child thing go wrong and the bodyguard shots everybody in the way and in the end the child is safe

For anyone thinking of renting this film... It is a MUST. It's in my top 3 films I've ever seen. The way they filmed this film is great, something a bit different, very original. The music fits the film very well, atmospheric to say the least. I highly recommend this film if you have not seen it. Denzel Washington is at his best, and with a great performance also from the young Dakota Fanning. You must see/rent this film.

totally enjoyed this movie full of emotion rollercoaster experience of brilliant acting from Denzel Washington and the young girl. Very sad at the end would loved to have a great happy ending but was tainted with sadness great veiwing a film not to miss.

A boring start with no real interesting plot to speak of. Turned off film half way through the viewing.

What a complete waste of 140 mins, the only reason this film justifies a star at all is because Denzil does his mean and moody bit so well, the film is slow moving and tedious to the extreme in places. The plot is hard to believe at best, I would rather have spent my time at the dentist having all my teeth removed without pain relief, although watching this film again would have sent me to sleep very easily.

This film was great, Washington played a great part. I didn't know what to expect as I only rented it due to other people saying it was a good film, they were wrong it was great! What made it better was that I didn't know it was based on true events of a real person.

Action, tense, real and great acting!!

This is a fantastic film, about a man named crecy who is an ex military/special forces soldier with a drinking problem due to the things that he and his team have done or seen. After going to visit an old team mate in mexico,crecy ends up taking a job as a low paid bodyguard to allow a family to renew a ten million ransom insurance policy. The little girl wants to be good friends with crecy who initally refuses to let her get close but ends up teaching her how to win a swimming contest. The little girl is kidnaped and crecy badly injured, Crecy then takes it upon himself to kill anyone who may have profited from the little girls ransom. A well directed action thriller which i really did enjoy, great action and stunts and a good plot make this a really enjoyable film to watch

I always find that films i love play out like mini films. I got this from Man On Fire. This has Denzel Washington becoming the father to Dakota Fanning culminating in the kidnapping incident which hospitalises Denzel and splits him from Dakota - thats the first mini-film. Then the attempt and failure by the family to get their daughter back by negotiation (unbeknown to the mother, the betrayal to come) - the failure, which the mother believes has led to the death of her daughter - thats the second. Then Denzel's back - with a vengeance - and with the mothers blessing goes on a calm and workmanlike killing spree, uncovering the conspiracy and dishing out the punishments to the films climax - the third. Whether others will agree with the above opinion is another matter, but what can't be denied is that while violent, the justice being dished out by Denzel is honest, unlike the Feds and Dakota's father. This honest, vengeance-filled rampage, is also beautiful and touching at the same time.

Denzel pulls it out of the bag once again. You really get to know his character in the film and thta makes it all the more emotional in the end. Its great acting all round and has fantastic boults of action. The music should be mentioned as it was superb throughout. A rollercoaster ride of a film which will keep you glued to the end. One negative would possibly be the slightly strange relationship between Denzels character and the little girl. All round, another Denzel classic which is well worth a look.

Additionally, Denzil Washington delivering his lines through his monotone baritone voice became somewhat annoying. However, these are my only gripes. Certainly one of the finest movies I have seen for quite some time. Exquisite direction and flawless acting make this a very entertaining and often moving film. Denzel Washington plays one of his most engaging and emotional roles to date, and the rest of the cast perform beautifully. Christopher Walken is of course superb in his part although he did not appear as often as I would have liked. A story of ultimate greed that backfires is offset against a childs innocence and love. This is also a film for action movie lovers as it has its fair share of bullets, rockets and revenge. The location of Mexico City adds a feel of seediness and corruption which in itself is an eye opener. All in all, a truly gripping film from beginning to end. Highly recommended!

Standard (fallen) hero against world movie but more than saved by some excellent acting by Denzil Washington.

This was absolutely brilliant from start to finish. The plot line had substance and masterfully executed by Washington backed up with some great one liners from Walken. Settle down to this one - you won't be disappointed!

This is not as gripping and thrilling as Fallen but on the whole a really good film

For a Tony Scott film, this is very sedately paced. His films tend to be quite frenetic, but here, he is trying to show us that Denzel's character is a tortured soul who is just trying to be human again. Scott is also trying out some new hand-held camera techniques and editting as well which are, quite frankly, annoying. That goes on for too long. I've got quite a good attention span, but found myself wavering here. Once it gets round to him getting the child back, the action is quite taught and violent, but something is lacking.

A tough, gritty film that tries to blend action-style tension with powerful emotional issues. The central relationship reminded me of 'Leon' although this film didn't quite handle the complexities of relationship as well as Leon, it is well worth watching.

I am a great fan of Denzel Washington and Dakota Fanning and they really work well together to make this a believable action packed thriller. I thoroughly enjoyed this.

A gripping, well acted thriller with a mixture of pathos, violence and a charming child actress.

A great performance again from Denzel as the central character Creasy. As well as the usual suave, supercool action hero this has a much darker side as well of an addicted, angry cold-hearted b****d. Dakota Fanning provides the innocent spark that resurrects Creasy's humanity and triggers an awesome retribution on the bad guys who do her harm. Some surprises and a little hint of romance make this a very good all-round movie. Like the musical interludes as well.

I am a big fan of Denzel Washington films, but this is my absolute favourite. It's based on a true story which makes it even more enthralling. Denzel holds no prisoners in this film and his killing and tortures on people makes him kick ass big time! I have recommended this film to everyone I know and enjoy watching it every now and again. ONE TO WATCH BIG TIME!

I wasn't sure at first but this proved to be an excellent film. Quite different.

This film took a little while to get going and was starting to look like it might be a bit sentimental but fear not, once in its stride this is a pulsating action thriller with plenty of bodies piling up along the way. The ending is not a happy ending cop-out and you will remain entertained to the end.

Not knowing anything about this movie other than Denzel Washington's films are always really good, this one is excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed it, and it is probably the best film we have seen in ages. Definately 'A must watch'. Get this, and you won't be disappointed.

Didnt know what to expect from this film, as never heard of it. Got it on a recommendation from a friend, and having seen it, i have been recommending it to others!! loved it!

this is by far the best film you will ever see in your life!!!

Washington is the true hero who we take to our hearts. This film reminded me very much of Gladiator, the soundtrack must have been by Hans Zimmer. The middle hole in the plot made me groan as I was prepared for the bloody scenes to follow. How many times are we left wishing for the hero to die ?? Why do we love this mix of Christian love and demonic bloody revenge? Yep a good revenge story and Denzil was great, as usual.

Well worth watching, one of Wasinghton's best films, Brilliant.

I kinda have a guilty pleasure about some of these dumb revenge action films and I did get a few kicks out of this. The first hour or so is actually surprisingly good as Washington bonds with his clients child, the precocious Dakota Fanning. Then of course, she gets kidnapped and is claimed to be killed and our man Denzel paints his picture of death, all fuelled by a quasi-Religious justification which is rather nauseating. It's kinda boring from there on, yeah that's right - boring once the action kicks in! Add to this Tony Scott's insistent glorification of his images, a constant barrage of visual distractions - a kind of hyper-real expressionism - and you get a bog standard genre pic with a rather unhealthy sense of it's own self-importance, both stylistically and thematically.

Denzel Washington can do no wrong as far as I am concerned. Just love his films and this did not disappoint.

good story ,great action would recomend

If you want to listen to a piano and watch THE Denzel cry for about 2 hours then see a couple of guns and some average action be my guest... Oh so disappointing. Yes it does contain a spoiler, thats about it.

If you're looking for something light and fun to watch, Man on Fire is not it. This is far from a hi-octane action movie, it's a harsh, unsettling drama with flashes of uncompromising violence. It's also brilliant. Denzel Washington plays a grizzled bodyguard who loses the young girl he is protecting whilst her father is working in South America. He sets out to find her, using every method at his disposal. And they aren't always pleasant. It is a fantastic performance by Washington, whose character may be brusque and occasionally ruthless, but deep down has compassion and a determination that can see him overcome tremendous odds. The film is also well directed by Tony Scott, who gives proceedings a gritty, almost dirty feel. I can't say that by the end I was grinning ear to ear, but as a compelling and thought-provoking tale, there is no faulting Man on Fire.

Denzel is fantastic in this film. An unusual role for DW - he plays an ex assasin, plagued by his nightmares and unable to have normal relationships with anyone, turns to drink and takes on a job which he thinks is just a glorified baby-sitter with no pressure. Dakota Fanning is her usual brilliant self and her character wins over Denzel's hard shell and they become friends.... obviously things turn bad and he has to take aggressive action, showing his real strength of character I wasn't sure if I would like it, considering the theme, but it is very well shot. DW is particularly cool and heroic, but not in a corny Americanised way shows realy substance to his personality. A good film.

the movie was good to wacth, and its has some action to watch, i like to watch it so the storyline is good

This is the best film i have ever seen, my favourite movie. The end is just superb! + One of very few films to get me literally in tears! + One of very few films that i've actually watched more than once! - i rented it and bought it! Great acting, great storyline, great directing, this film is a MUST SEE for anybody liking Thrillers, Action or quality films. 5 STAR. BRAVO

If true, how difficult it must be to live with kids in South America with the threat of your children to get kidnapped any minutes This is about a bodyguard of a little girl in South America. The bodyguard was previously a killer. A nice relation starts between this guy and a little girl. Unfortunately the girl is kidnapped and the guard will do everything to find out who did this. Definitely not for young children (scenes of torture)

A rare film.......Denzel is a ruthless but 'good' guy body guard. A great story line and a worthwhilw watch. would highly recommend.

This has to be one of the best films i have ever seen! Brilliant story line with plenty of action and some tear jerking moments, twists and turns on the way, well worth the watch!!

For some reason this film has low reviews from critics, such as 'The Times'. The reason is because this is an American film they wanted Denzel to do backflips when he shot his gun, overact, & wanted to adopt the child he was protecting & get married at the ending. Neither of these corny endings take place, instead a interesting storyline develops. A bond is created and then broken. Denzel tries to find a needle in a haystack, (kidnapping is a daily business in these parts) with consequences for him & others.

Brilliant. Really enjoyed this. Denzel fitted the part well. Revenge at its best, with a few tears along the way. Great stuff.

Denzel Washington has a dark and a good side to him in this film but it actually works really well. The little girl is an absolutely fabulous actress. Great action drama I was gripped from the start and a great story.

This is another really good film by Denzel Washington, good story, good action, good film for everyone. Worth watching for sure.

Denzel is amazing in this movie. His performance is so moving and the storyline keeps you glued to the screen throughout, love it.

Man on Fire may appear to start off rather slow but this plays a major part of the build up of what's to come in this action thriller. Washingtons's role as Creasy is superbly acted and one of his best films in my opinion. The rather slow build up in this film gets you into the character side of the film as it builds into some really great explosive action from Washington. The cast in this film is superb and they all play there parts with shear precision. It's a damn great film and worth watching on more than one occasion.

As always with a 'Scott Free' production, very taut and innovative editing, reminiscent of Ridleys 'Black Hawk Down'.One of Tonys better films, showing greater depth than he has before with 'Top Gun' or 'True Romance' Once more the great Scott brothers show themselves to be the best of british film~makers.

The first 40 minutes are dreary, but after that the movie gets going. It's a good story, Denzel puts on a great performance and has you at the edge of your seat.

If you like the book do not watch the film as the hero is totally changed, the location is completely different and the outcome of the film is 100% different! If you have not read the books the film may be worth 3 stars as the young girl is absolutely wonderful.

Why can't all movies be this good. Denzel Washington is superb as the bodyguard hired to protect a young girl of a wealthy businessman. When she gets kidnapped after a botched surveillance, things turn out to be not as clear cut as he was lead to believe. Highly recommended

I have to say I found this film rather depressing

'Man of Fire' is a story about Creasy (Denzel Washington), a man who reluctantly takes a job in Mexico City as the bodyguard to a young girl (from a rich family) named Pita. Creasy is distant with the little girl at first, but can't reist her charm, and soon falls in love with her. It is quite fun to watch the interactions between the girl and her body guard Creasy. However, when the girl is kidnapped, the theme of the movie turns totally to brutal revenge. While I am a fan of Denzel Washington, this isn't the greatest movie he has associatied himself with. The movie has a poor moral of brutal vengance instead of forgiveness. An elderly couple even asks him in the movie, 'Doesn't the Scripture say we should forgive?' In which Creasy responds: 'Forgiveness is between them and God. It's my job to arrange the meeting.' He then launches a missile out the window toward an oncoming car. The reason why this is disturbing is because Creasy is made out to be a Spiritual figure, almost like Jesus Christ. We're supposed to believe that John Creasy, the bodyguard played by Denzel Washington, has a lot in common with Jesus. There are scars on his hands. He sometimes looks heavenward and wonders why God has forsaken him. Others depend on him for salvation and security. He reads and has memorized parts of the Bible. And his initials are J.C. (John Creasy). Also, this movie is not meant to be taken tongue and cheek. It is presented as a serious revenge story and is based on the 'facts' that kidnapping and government curruption is a serious problem in Mexico City. Creasy, a man who supposedly reads the Bible and is a spiritual man, got it all wrong. The Bible teaches that we all should forgive others, just as God has forgiven us. Justice and vengance is only for God to decide, not us. So Creasy has got things backwards. While this movie is interesting at times, it is a bit over the top in its demonstration of brutal violence. It also is a bit long.

Brilliant acting as ever from Denzil Washington and others in this good thriller film. The main character plays the 'man whose lost faith' to a renewal of a self-belief, exceptionally well. The music score also is nice too, which is lending to this slick thriller.

Brilliant performances from all.

This film took a long time to get going, but half way through it takes up an extremely fast past. We see Denzel Washingtons character go from being a man who has lost touch with humanity, to one that is hell bent on seeking revenge. I don't want to say why he is seeking revenge as this would give the story away. There is bits of the film that I found disgusting, but if you like blood and gore then you will be fine. Be warned though the ending is a bit sad.

I do not give my stars easily but this movie deserves even more than 5. I loved the way director looked at the story. The edit was magnificent. It is of those movies which you never get tired of watching. I strongly recommend it.

I thought this was a great film! A brilliant story of revenge and retribution. One of the best I have seen for quite a while.. It would have got 5 stars but for the first hour dragging a little. Apart from that the acting is top notch, Denzel at his best.. If you don't like violence though it may not be for you as that is all the last third contains. To my utter delight. Ps. Mickey Rourke looks stranger and stranger every film he's in, I didn't know at first he was in it and was sure it was a guy who just looked like him.. Extreme plastic surgery.. Aarrghhh.. What a mess..

well paced film credable plot

a bit of a slow start and I thought 'oh dear wrong choice', but I am glad we stuck with it as it became a compelling watch. Not my usualy type of film, and I don't like too much blood and violence but how it was done was acceptable to me. Good film.

Having rented it on impulse, we were very impressed with this film. It has some brilliant twists and good action scenes. Dakota Fanning once again plays her part to perfection with Denzel Washington doing just as well. You really get sucked in. It was just as good during our 2nd viewing the following night.

This film is visually and emotionally stunning. It's possibly one of the best films I've ever seen. Denzil Washington never turns in a bad performance, but in this film he strips you bare and leaves you gasping. Extremely violent, tender, ghastly, gorgeous, this film just about has it all.

Was very pleased with this Denzel Washington vehicle. Much more gruesome character than in training day and the action is fast paced and well thought out. The Scott boys can direct with too much detail sometimes but this movie was a very polished job.

What a man, what a film, excellent, gripping and brilliant. Must see for the thrill factor.

This is hardcore vengence with a vengence. Very suitable to watch if you've ever felt mistreated or hard-done-to. Denzel is supremely convincing - boy does this man take it personally. I wouldn't like to get on his wrong side. The violence is over the top but since it relates to the kidnap and murder of his employers daughter you become drawn in to the retribution as it is mercilessly meted out. Definitely a cert 18.

MY ONLY GRIPE WAS THAT I COULDN'T WORK OUT WHETHER OR NOT IT WAS A TRUE STORY. IT STARS THE ALWAYS RELIABLE DENZEL WASHINGTON AND THE TALENTED CHILD STAR DAKOTA FANNING. WATCH IT!

Absolutely fantastic in every sense of the word! A real tough film that would make Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay sh-t in their little boys briefs. Dakota Fanning is absolutely fantastic as the girl who gets kidnapped, in most cases child actors can be more than irritating due to over-acting etc but she plays the part with a certain maturity that is not often seen in most Hollywood actresses. Gritty and sometimes hard to swallow, this is one that will stay with you for a long time after watching!

The first 10 or so mins of this film as extremely slow and the extended title sequence is quite irritating however once the dialogue begins it is excellent all the way through. Denzal Washington at his best as a man on a mission, with his adorable co-star Dakota Flemming. They have you on the edge of your seat through the entire movie and I have to say it is the best film I have seen in a long time. Well worth a look even if you don't particularly like Denzel, I have since placed my order for my own copy!

This film has everything from reading previous reviews i decided to watch it and how glad i did. Based on a true story on a serious problem in latin America. Starts a bit slow but gets better and better.Just have the hankeys close buy for the end. BRILLIANT !!

Man on Fire is an excelent movie! It is enjoyable, loads of action but also sentimental and with very nice scenes. I guess Denzel Washington really knows how to play well in movies. He proved once again what an amazing actor he is.

This is the kind of film that shows Denzel at his best. Enjoyed this from start to finish, went out and bought it on DVD the next day.

Still well worth watching, easy entertainment, but pulled on the heart strings.

The young girl in this movie is also in War of The Worlds. Listen, she'll go far - brilliant little actress to say the least! The plot is both subtle and feasable. Shall we say it's an 'action' film and the director has noted that the public hates slow moving plots. Basically it's all about a man who's coercised into being a wishfully problem free bodyguard to an American/Mexican family. It all goes wrong with corrupt Mexican Police involvement when the girl gets kidnapped. There are a few sad moments when your stomach turns (but not much!) and that vengeance section when you admire what's happening. Should have been a big screen film! The ending is kind of predicted but you won't know it till the last 10 minutes. Great acting throughout to say the least - Go watch it! Michael

The parallels with The Sound of Music were unmistakeable. Particularly the finger snapping sequence which reminded me of 'High on a Hill Lived a lonely Goatherd'

Not always a fan of Denzel Washington's films but I think this is a really good film. Ok so it's sounds like it's a bit cheesy. An ex special forces guy who is now a troubled alcoholic hitman that is hired to look after a little girl who starts to turn his thinking around & he starts to smile & be human again at which point she is kidnapped & he goes back to his old ways and takes revenge. Honestly this is a great film.

This has got to be one of Denzels best films, very powerfull and very very good

I am not even going to bother justifying why i love the movie, I simply do. F-ing awesome. But perhaps I will elaborate so that others watch it as well: Visually, it's great. The conveying of the character is what puts it over the top. Washington is top notch and uses it well here. He is the character, the torn badass. It feels so much more like an action man's swan song (perhaps due to the gorgeous 'una palabra') than many other films that try to catch the same. Pure action fans don't worry, you will get your fill of pointed scenes. And that's the thing, it's all pointed, all driven, never just and only kaboom. An all-star. It just feels like he is a man driven, a man on fire. Rent now. Then Buy.

What a film ,this was an absolutely amazing and outstanding thriller and that's an understatement .Dakota Fanning is a fantastic little actress as well as being adorable ! Denzel and Christopher are also great as a double act! This film has everything ,one moment you could be on the edge of you seat with suspense the next laughing then a few minutes later in tears ! My only advice would be to RENT THIS MOVIE NOW!!!!

Another cracking performance from Denzel Washington. Story line hooks you from the very begining and keeps you there right upto the end. Denzel Washington is very convincing and really brings his charecter to life. You really get a sense of the tension that suggets Mexico City is boiling under the surface. Watch it - you won't regret it.

Although a little slow, this film was very watchable. The storyline was a little predicatble but Denzel Washington and the young girl act a beautiful partnership.

This was rather slow to start, with annoying music and a lot of mumbling but do stay with it as it turned out to be a roller coaster ride and more than a half decent film.

My first and deserved 5 stars. OK firstly I like Denzil doing violence and revenge. Its like bacon & eggs and, er .... revenge. The movie sets off on a steady foot but you do need to know what its saying. Its not like a lot of recent releases where the first hour is to hit the producers minute target, take things that are happening early doors in for later. Denzil plays the bodygaurd (Ex special forces type of course, end of cliche's) with his fair share of emotional baggage who is reluctantly hired to protect a young Dakota Fanning in the cooking pot that is Mexico city. As you already know from other reviews it all goes a bit Pete Tong and from here on the film takes on a violent almost viscal theme but filmed in a jerky nearly Disney just out of focus way. Think Natural born killers but not reliant on animation, some bits are pure 'in ya face' and not for the squeamish others could be shown on BBC 2 on a Sunday afternoon, its a fair mix. One thing that seems common is that some reviews on this film seem to state its a bit over long, for me its not. It needs the time to build up a feeling and understand the relationship between Denzil & Dakota plus the vengance trail really needs the rest of the film to prevent it becoming a mindless mellee. If this film was 90 minutes long (its 140) it would result in it being compacted into a slaughter fest & losing some of its emotion & honesty. I really dont want to add more for fear of giving any of the storyline away but the end of the film is truly brilliant, personally for me the alternate ending was better see what you think. Watch it then decide. Either way it works. The job is done. To recap a fantastic film that involved me from the off and had me charged with emotion and shouting for vengance to the end. Watch this film! I wish I had a magic star adding buton to get it over five.

I cant say this is one of my favourite films but it is by no means the worst. The storyline was good but for some reason I dont think it achieved its full potential.

Refreshingly well filmed. Great story with a simple 'get 'em back' Philosophy. If you want a good action easy watch then give it a go. Once again Denzel gives us the kind of performance we have come to expect. Not as 'sugary sweet' as some of the US Action films. Top Film!!!

Excellent movie - anything that Denzil Washington is in is always good value. Much like Gene Hackman. Good thriller with Denzil playing something other than the good guy hero.

I saw this film in France last year and it improved with a second viewing. Great pace with believable characters.

This starts of as a really engaging family type movie. After the kidnap it becomes a gruesome revenge movie and the ending is unexpected. Enough to keep you entertained, and then some.
