I like most Clint Eastwood films, but I wouldn't say he's a good actor. Eli Wallach, on the other hand, is outstanding in this film. It's surprising that once Clint Eastwood started making movies himself, he didn't use Eli Wallach at all until a minor part in Mystic River, almost forty years later. This is still a great movie today. It's not only my favourite western (I'm not particularly a fan of the genre), it's one of my top five favourite films overall. If you've been put off westerns by the self-righteous, tough-guy, American-hero type of rubbish that comes from Hollywood, I urge you to try this one. This is the third in the series of The Man With No Name tilogy of spaghetti westerns by Sergio Leone. The story is set during the American Civil War (although filmed mostly in Spain), but it isn't a war film. It's a simple story of hidden treasure and the greed of three chancers trying to beat each other to find it. The other two films in the trilogy are A Fistful of Dollars and For A Few Dollars More. Don't worry if you haven't seen either of them, the movies aren't dependant on each other. A lot is said about the Ennio Morricone score, and rightly so. I just don't think this film would be the same without it, and I can't think of any movie with a more fitting soundtrack than this. It emphasises the storyline and directs your emotions perfectly. I wouldn't usually use the word 'experience' when talking about a movie, but that's really what watching this is, an experience. It's a fascinating story, shocking at times and funny at others but always totally captivating. The outstanding performance by Eli Wallach, the perfectly suited soundtrack, the incredible cinematography and the almost impeccable direction are what secures its status as an all-time classic.

If you ever get a chance to watch this film on a big screen (anything over 6'), then do so. The backdrops and panoramas are stunning in their own right - I personally think it should have won an award for the cinamatography alone.

I've read other reviews of this film which I feel miss the point. One comment was that the special effects were not very good.... in 1966 the special effect of a stick of dynamite exploding was probably an actual stick of dynamite exploding - what more can you do ?.

Some of the 1STARS also criticise the length and pace of the film. It is a long film... America (actually filmed in Italy) is a big country, it takes a long time to go from A to B. The pace; well horses are not that quick and give you plenty of time to look at the beautifully photographed scenery.

The characters would be cliched themselves if only they hadn't actually invented most of the cliches they are now compared to. The action scenes only seem stylised for the same reason.

Bold, beautiful, violent and sometimes very funny.

This Leone masterpiece is, simply put, the greatest film ever made. How Eli Wallach (The Ugly) never won an Oscar for his role in this film is astounding. Eveything thing from the settings to the costumes, to the dialogue (of which there isn't much) to the soundtrack is absolutely sublime. This film, along with the other two 'Dollars' films in the trilogy, turned the Western genre on it's head revealing a much grittier and realistic view of life in the Wild West. Home to possible the most infamous tension building ending ever displayed on screen, this film is a must.

Ennio Morricone`s music..Close ups of bloke`s (and sometimes women`s) eyes..a bloke killing eight(or even ten!) men with a six(?) shooter at lightning speed... Loud,(and often ridiculous) sound effects..Non-English speaking acting cast dubbed into English.Clint Eastwood,Lee Van Cleef,and Eli Wallach dubbed into Italian when shown in Italy,and Spanish when shown in Spain and Mexico. THIS in a nutshell is what we all love..SERGIO LEONE`S CANNED SPAGHETTI!! A CLASSIC OF ITS TIME. MADE THE WESTERN GENRE SEEM FRESH AND EXCITING AGAIN. SAY NO MORE...

This newly restored special edition DVD presentation is worth its weight in gold. Sergio Leoni's genius film-making shines through and although Clint Eastwood sleepwalks his performance through the film - it is still a delight to watch. Eli Wallacha nd Lee Van Cleef give excellent supporting roles and the music lifts and expands the film experience. But it is the direction that steals the show - well done Sergio and thanks for the continuing pleasure. By the way the commentary is above par as well.

I have seen this movie several times and every viewing is just as enjoyable. This is probably the best western of all time (it is actually not a western). Made in the 1960s, the movie is essentially a European version of an American tale set against an American backdrop. Completely missing from the film are the usual portraits of the West - solid honest men and women, a hero who upholds the law and is characterised by decency, hardiness and independence. The film has no heroes. It is a tale of greed and the culmination of greed. It is astonishingly well made. Leone was a genius and the movie proves it - his use of size in the more rugged scences of the Western landscape (actually southern spain), his brilliant depiction of emotions in the close-ups. Leone was ahead of his time. Very soon any number of directors copied him. The most striking feature of the film (as with the dollar films) is the depiction of violence. The sanitised violence of 1950s Hollywood is nowhere to be seen. Instead when violence erupts it is bloody and graphic (though no match for the Ketchup spraying standards of today). A must see, even for those who don't like Westerns. However, it is really a film for men. Women won't enjoy this film.

What more really needs to be said about this film. Sergio Leone made a great trilogy, taking a bit of a risk using Clint Eastwood as the lead role. Although not one of my favourite actors (many of his films are appalling) he does play a great cowboy. This is a must watch for any true western fan.

I watched this film for the 2nd time after approximately a ten year gap. I still enjoyed it. Clint Eastwood embodies the concept of being 'cool'. And 'the ugly' guy is fantastic to watch too.

If you are in the mood for light, senseless entertainment I would recommend this film to you!

Although the film was not released in the United States until 1967, it was produced and released internationally in 1966.

For me , this has to be the best western ever.The soundtracks are ace, and in widescreen its even better than them old Sunday afternoon screenings on Tv, but you have to like westerns and Clint Eastwood to appreciate this classic, not for everyone.

With 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly', Sergio Leone managed to make the previously frowned upon Spaghetti-Western genre credible. But just how did he manage it and end up with a widely-loved classic in the process? In my opinion the answer is 'fun'. This film is just simply unadulterated, slapstick, epic fun from start to finish. The characters, despite the fact we know little about them, are left to play in a huge sandbox, full of exciting and visually compelling consequences. Despite a distinct lack of development, the film's characters still come alive on the screen. Tuco (The titular Ugly) portrayed by Eli Wallach is perhaps the most dramatically focused character. Wallach's portrayal is both loveable and villainous which makes him all the more fun to watch. Clint Eastwood's brooding performance as Blondie (‘The Good’) exudes a certain coolness that can't be defined by a thrilling twist or nice story arc and Lee Van Cleef is also excellent as the villainous Angel Eyes (or 'The Bad'). But what makes the film really great is its fantastic cinematography, as the camera slowly pans over vast deserts; make this epic deserving of its place in film history. The film’s final 'showdown' between the three titular characters is perhaps one of the most memorable sequences ever filmed (and certainly one of the best in terms of both direction and cinematography) and it is very easy to see why. Also notable is the film's classic musical score by famed composer Ennio Morricone which adds to the visual experience greatly and has you humming 'dudeleleduh' all the way through the films 2 and a half hour duration. Overall Leone's classic addition to the Spaghetti Western genre, while short on story arcs and character development is greatly redeemed by its visual expertise and well acted characters. A must see for any fan of film.

It may be dated, but still worth seeing if you haven't before. The ending is still worth sitting through the whole film.

Westerns are not a genre I would say I am immediately drawn to. This is just a very very good film. Clint could not be better as Blondey/The Man With No Name. This film is funny, exciting, and brilliant. Anyone would love it.

This is an all time favorite of mine but my children had never seen it, have to admit both sat and watched this classic and my son really enjoyed it.....what can l say Clint Eastwood....classic!

Charismatic and entertaining. One of those movies where you love the characters so much, you are constantly awaiting the next moment that will endear you more. The villains are admirable and Clint Eastwood is the ultimate flawed goody, you'll identify with his weaknesses. The charm of the film helps you forgive the implausible scenes where threats arrive undetected by the oh so smart protagonists, even though the viewer knows they are inevitable, witness the arrival of Angel Eyes at the cemetery. Great fun.

Clint’s farewell spaghetti western – this is the full version cut and encompasses a 3-man pursuit of hidden treasure, contending with the American civil war brewing menacingly in the background.

The landscape is vast, the characters brilliantly played and the cuts and close ups, music and story line are all spot on – this is a truly epic film – make time to view it in it's entirity in one sitting – you will be transformed from desert to mountain to tundra, on the trail and in the midst of good, bad and ugly people.

Without a doubt this film will still be right up there as a classic, even in 50 years time. The backdrop and plot of the film is breathtakingly worked and I doubt I will see such a quality western in my life time.

This film no matter what is the best ever, the soundtracks are awesome,if you like country guitar music, and the film story line is great, a must see film over and over again, and the dvd version is great, but sound could have been 5.1, so the bullets buzz past, but it is an old classic now. Never see them as good as this again.

Yes, its a good film with Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallock. It makes a perfect partner for a Fistful of Dollars and A Few Dollars More. There's some good spaghetti music and some suspense near the end. Well worth watching, especially if you've not seen it before.

classic soundtrack, classic scenes, classic western. well worth a watch, great bloke film; guns, fights, stand-offs, music you can (try to) sing along to, lovely scenery. The only thing i had a very slight problem with was that the lip sync is out very slightly, i have put this down to the fact that the movie was recorded in Italian originally, but the sync you soon start to forget about. Will be recommending this to mates for sure.

This is one of the best western I have seen,Clint Eastwood is at his best,with good supporting cast,I really enjoyed this movie.

We watch a DVD every afternoon whe we get an opportunity, sometime twice especially if it’s a classic The good the bad the ugly is one of the best westerns ever made. It does get a little over the top when they get 10 shots from their six-shooters, and never miss. But the movie shows what greed will do to a man. Plus the music score and Wallach's performance of Tuco is outstanding! The spaghetti film shook the America moving makers to rethink how to make a good cowboy western movie!

This is wthout doubt a classic ... written at a time when westerns were the 'in thing'. I can imagine one day students will be looking and learning from the ability to mix humour and authenticity into a film that is great from the off ! Just wish Clint was immortal !

I feel the same way about Westerns as a Punk feels about Progressive Rock. However, this really is a well-crafted, witty, wry, darkly comic story. It's a long Sunday afternoon film. Nonetheless, well worth watching if you have a few lazy hours to spare.

Looked forward to checking this out after all the years of hearing the famous whistled theme and seeing clips. I was incredibly disappointed to find an overly slow and tedious film. I must admit that after an hour, and realising there was another 90 mins to go i felt my time could be better spent on laundry or gardening. So it might be earth shatteringly compelling later on. I'm never going to know however....

This is one of those classic Westerns starring Clint Eastwood as the mean talking Cowboy. Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach play excellent cameos and the music is something that is rememberable. All in all you must watch this movie if your into movies at all.

I loved this as a kid, it knocked my socks off, thanks pa for taking me. And I loved it again, all grown up. Ill watch it again soon, with my two boys.

This film is quite simply fantastic. It's epic and long without ever being boring, remains consistantly funny (as many times as you watch it), has suspense, cool, action, pretty much everything. On top of that, Ennio Morricone's score is one of the best, and coolest soundtracks for any movie, ever! The crescendos of horns! The choir! The guitar! 'Blondie! You dirty son of a-;~`bawowawoh bah wow wahh!!'. Only gets better the more you see it.

My Husband has seen this film many times and still loves it as its a proper classic Western film with plenty of action and great acting something you never see anymore and definately Clint Eastwood at his best.

Clint Eastwood excells in this spaghetti western and it is easy to see why, he really puts his soul into any role he plays and he does so here in spades, the story is straight foreward and easy to follow but at the same time Clint Eastwood keeps you on the edge of your seat waiting for him to do what you know he is going to do and when he does it, he does it so well, an old film certainly but better than much that comes out of Hollywood today.

To some it will feel a little dated now, but such is the quality of the Film, it still entertains and takes you to the wire for the punch line(s). Powerful stuff that finally established the 'spagetti western' where hollywood got a bloody nose from the 'upstarts'. Clint Eastwood is now arguably the gratest Actor and Director Hollywood has ever known, such is the quality of his either as an Actor or Director. An amazing restrained man who shuns publicity unless forced on him by the Film Studio contract, he is as close as you will ever get to 'The People's' Actor in a way never before seen, and I doubt will ever be bettered in the Future. Unmissable, go watch a Legend.....

This film is just... wow. Gorgeous use of long shots and close ups. The mise en scene compliments the narrative perfectly, the characters are kept mysterious and ambiguous throughout. Ennio Morricone's amazing score adds so much to this film and music is used to full effect to make this a very entertaining film. I love the way Leone uses changes in the pace of the film and in the speed of the camera panning to create a very stylised look to the film. Overall this film is just brilliant.

Whoever remastered the soundtrack for this needs firing goes through patches of appaling quietness, effects disappearing completely (to give an very good surround sound of actors reading scripts into mikes in a studio) and terrible balance. Spoils one of my favoutite films

Brilliant movie, one of the best westerns out there..............

I went to see all three of the 'Dollars' trilogy, on my own, at the cinema, on hot, sunny summer afternoons, when the cinema was the coolest place in town; these films were also the coolest films around. Initially, I rated the first two above the third, simply because the latter seemed to be too long and not quite as exciting as the first two. Since then, I have seen all of them many times on the TV, and I now rate the third as being in first place. OK, the dubbing is terrible and the close-up, eye-staring contests are overdone; the mournful music over the civil war scenes is also somewhat overplayed, but the rest of it is so brilliant as to make up for these minor defects. As elegiac Westerns go, I think that this one is even better than the much praised 'The Searchers', and it has set the standard for such films to this day. If you love Westerns and you've never seen this one, you should rent it immediately !

42 years after the film was released, it appears very dated, as though it were self-consciously trying to be clever. Very slow in pace; very long in execution.

Ive seen this film millions of times already and fancied a repeat! Classic Spaghetti western, one of my all time favourites, you really cant go wrong to be honest!

Beyond expectation and imagination, these three protagonists come together in an epic graveyard scene and the soundtrack although overused since its creation still holds its own.

A classic movie, but why? Partly the photography which is mostly exellent. Partly the direction, which is almost unfailingly of a very high standard. Partly the acting, likewise. The story is very good, and unlike any "modern" movies, has a clearly definable beginning, middle and end. The editing is unfailingly good. But one thing lets it down appallingly and - for me - makes the film second rate. The dubbing from Italian is dreadful, and in many cases utterly risible.

I enjoyed it; but how much more would I have done had it been made in English? Or if I spoke Italian?

It's a shame that a Filme Noir of such otherwise high grade should be let down by such a simple thing, but it's simply unacceptable.

In case you haven't already; make sure you also see 'Fistful of Dollars' and 'A Few Dollars More'. Save 'Once upon a time in the West' for last, but make sure you watch all four!

Utterly tremendous conclusion to a memorable trilogy. This one is really the best, with Leone having grown in confidence and ambition, producing a funny but violent, leisurely but gripping film. Its use of music, particularly in the highly stylised climax, is phenomenal, and Eli Wallach brings a great new character into the mix.

The film is firmly set in the American Civil War, and produces some powerful images and thoughtful reflections on the carnage and cruelty of that - and by implication other - conflicts. This episode continues the amoral treatment of the story and the characters, and sets the tone for a host of anti-heroes in the following decade.

A hugely enjoyable and influential film.

This film is a great example of three actors and one director doing what they do best. Creating a film with intensity, meaning while being each individualistic in there approach. Don't be put off by the western tag to this film, this not just another Clint Eastwood western, there is a superb supporting cast of Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach, with the direction of Sergio Leone creating fantastic location shots of spain were it was fimed. Also, again another great musical score Ennio Morricone, which makes the final scene so easy to watch, despite so long on paper. The first two films in the trilogy are just as good and tell the full story.

This movie really stands the test of time. The commentary is also worth a listen to get an appreciation of Leone's brilliance.

Flawless western from the master, Leone. Great to finally see the movie how he intended, with extended scenes and added footage. And of course, the soundtrack is fantastic.

Clint Eastwood is the moody hero, who outwits the bad baddies and the story is engaging enough. Worth seeing if you haven't already or you want to refresh your memory.

Fantastic Western. Still have the theme tune in my head. Definitely a timeless movie. A must see and a must have for any collection.

Felt a bit long with spurts of good scenes. Clint Eastwood is striking !

Too long, acting not great except for Clint, dialogue rubbish, plot line daft, in general not a patch on the first one - just a very obvious bandwaggon film.

I have heard plenty about this film and how great and momentous picture this is, unfortunately, I found the film quite slow. It is filmed wonderfully and Monnicone's score is legendary. I prefer Leone's other films such as 'Once upon a Time in The West', 'Fistful of Dollars'. The film has some classic set pieces but it could have been tighter. The three main characters are excellent. Enjoyable Sunday afternoon film but a little patience will be needed for the 2hour and 40min duration.

Can't Eastwood keep his mouth shut while acting. Honestly words just tumble out of his mouth in this poor action adventure western. The special effects are the only redeeming feature of this way-too-pacey film. Perhaps if the characters took a little more time over the action sequences there may be a half-good film, but despite the huge budget, the hurried direction shows and lets the film down in the worst way. Poor show.

Three men searching for a box of money - that's the essence of this three hour epic which starts slowly, continues slowly and has no real climax at the end, either. The only memorable bit is the instantly recognisable Ennio Morricone score but frankly, you only need to watch the first five minutes to get this.

Why this is regarded as a classic eludes me. The story is thin and unbelievable, the pace painfully slow and the acting merely average. Or is it simply outdated?

Well, in my books it isn't good, it isn't ugly but it surely is bad.
